The easiest way to lower the price of marriage and dowries is to stop bringing US and Israeli concepts to the UK
Let’s stop sushi, adult chiors and meat carving stattions at simchas, let’s stop the shver paying rent for a few years in one of the most expensive cities in the world.
February 8, 2023 8:24 am at 8:24 am in reply to: My own theory about global warming and rising sea levels #2163761goldersgreenerParticipantZushy,
you have raised a few points, and they are definitely worth addressing
RISING LEVEL OF DRY EARTH – you are definitely right that the surface of many areas has risen.
nonetheless, you are talking about a relatively small amount – the roman remains of londonium is maybe a few meters under current levels. The Cardo in Yerushalyim is also only a couple of metres – maybe three or four under the present street
What you are saying – that decaying life raised the levels – definitely sounds possible, but it does not significantly effect the rest of the equation, as you will see.WHY DID THE SEA NOT FLOOD ANCIENT CITIES – Your question as to why the sea did not flood ancient cities is very limited.
Even according to the greatest doomsday predictions, not all of London will be flooded in forty years. Golders Green is way way above sea level – the highest point in London is at the end of Golders Green Road …….. the “worry” and hyberbole is about the East London – Docklands area, which are low lying, and that’s why they built the Thames Barrier.
I don’t know about the Israeli coastal plain, or the US East coast, but the entire Jordan Valley in E”Y, – including Beit She’an, Arad, the entire Yam Hamelach area, is BELOW sea level. nonetheless it did not flood for a very simple reason – there is ground above sea level between the sea and this area, which the water cannot cross. Much of the English Midlands too are below sea level.RISING SEA LEVEL – scientists claim sea level is rising. Unlike the level of dry land, sea level – and world temperature – always fluctuate, so this is much more debatable. nonetheless they claim sea levels are rising and the amount vary between 2mm a year to a full centimetre. [If sea levels rise at more than a centimetre for forty years, they will eventually flood the East London area.]
The normal reason given for sea levels rising is melting glaciers, which in turn is blamed on global warming, which is then blamed on carbon emissions etc …
You are suggesting that the sea has always risen – definitely possible – but bear in mind that while we have remains of cities, burial sites, and even Roman roads a few metres underground, as of yet no one has proven prior sea levels.
When I was in Grammar School, with my school tie, we were taught an additional theory for rising sea levels. Mother Earth absorbs water, when it rains only the layoff will reach the wider rivers and sea. When one paves over massive areas – think Milton Keynes or Kiryat Sefer and Beitar – many many square kilometres of rainwater end up in the river and sea. This is turn could CAUSE glaciers to melt, rather than be a result. [I don’t know if scientists still believe this, but I was taught this in PH grammar school by Mr. C. around the year 2000.]RISING TEMPERATURE – you have failed to address in your theory rising temperature. Has temperature always risen and the glaciers therefore always melted, – even before carbon emissions – just Earth level rose alongside, or did Earth level and sea level rise independent of temperatures,
CHAZAL – Chazal, Novi, Gemoro make many references to Hashem preventing the waves overtaking the dry land etc … Additionally R’ Yehoshua says that rain comes form the sky – perhaps it goes back somehow? – The gemoro in Brachos says that when Hashem cries the tears fall in the ocean and form an earthquake ….
I do not pretend to understand these sugyas on any level, but they definitely have bearing on your subject.goldersgreenerParticipantwhen I was a child in GG if you came to school late, or you ran in the corridor etc.. the menahel confiscated your shoes. if you twice in a week you went home without them. No one had Shabbos SHOES in those days, so it was a rather painful and humiliating punishment.
goldersgreenerParticipantלכבוד הגאון וכל חברייא קדישא
Every subject is open for discussion, and good respectful discussion is very constructive, nonetheless all discuusions should take place within parameters of דרך ארץ and מענטשליכקייט. this is especially true when discussing the opinions f גדולי ומאורי הדור שליט”א.
הזהרו בגחלתן.I have already written that the מחבר clearly says ששים רבוא עוברים בו בכל יום if one understands this כפשוטו then you are obviously right there is only one שאךה is there 600k daily or not. As the ט”ז and מג”א both agree that אין למחות ביד המקילין then obviously virtually every eiruv is kosher.
Nonetheless, there is a suggestion – primarily by הגאון ר’ משה פיינשטיין about brooklyn and the מנחת יצחק about London, to say that the מחבר does not refer too a literal 600k every day, rather, basically, the מחבר means a street which is מיועד for 600 k. Exactly what each pisek held, and exactly how one is קןבע the מציאות can be debated, and it remains הררים התלוים בשערה.
The עדה החרדית ערוב בירושלים עיה”ק excludes כביש המנהרות – 9 it also excludes כניסה לעיר and a couple of other roads.
as far as I understand, this effectively means that הגאונים ר’ יצחק טוביה וויס ור’ משה שטרנבוך שיח’ are excepting the שיטה of the מנחת יצחק and therefore make a point to exclude these roads. [ As a matter of interest Rabbi Weiis , Rabbi meir bransdorfer זצ”ל, abd Rabbi Roberts all consider themselves תלמידים of הגאון ר’ חנוך העניך פאדווא who also expressed opposition – at least verbally -for the London eiruv. ] על כל פנים this is the basic of the eida hachareidis who are clearly differentiating between London and yerushalayim.
The same applies in בני ברק the גאונים ר’ שמואל וואזנער זצ”ל and יבלח”ט ר’ ניסים קרליץ לרפו”ש have excluded כביש 4 from the eiruv, again R’ Chayim wosner has said that one may not carry in GG.There is another big heter for roads, and that is by making אינו מפולש. the דברי מלכיאל clearly writes that a road that bends is not a רה”ר , police barriers לכאורה are at least equal.
BTW, in case you guys are convinced that I am a card carrying anti eiruv member, I left golders green twenty years ago. When I was there no one walked around wearing a tallis, yidden joined in the VE day celebrations, Rabbi Jakovitz was chief rabbi, and corporal punishment – including shoe confiscation – was still used in all schools.

The question concerning the difference between GG and yerusholayim is very very valid, especially as the BaDatz Eida hachareidis and haGaon r; Chayim wosner shlit”a clearly spoke out against the GG eiruv despite the eiruvin in their pwn towns.
1) R’ meir Rosner has made his feelings clear that one may not carry on most the main roads in yerushalayim, including recently the sheaf Chayim road. As such one is limited to the loacal eiruvin, I think many are makpid not to carry on Shmuel hanovi or Bar ilan etc.
2) Even the eida hachareidis eiruv excludes kvish one, kvish nine [except for the tunnel to ramat shlomo] etc… the other rads have police barriers in place on Shabbos, as such at least on Shabbos they are very different and possibly this effects their denim even when the barriers are not in place. The same applies to b’nei b’rak, there are barriers by the coca cola bridge on kahaneman and in other places.
3) as far as I heard R’ ehrentrau shlit”a said that even with a tzuras hapesach at Spaniards inn he agrees that it is not a rambam eiruv.
4) R’ Yosef Babad – belzer dayan of Stamford hiil has said that it is unfair to compare townhouses with front and backyards to e”y where people live in 50 or 70 sq mr with a large number of children, many windowless machsanim, and many do not use electricity on Shabbos. as such he has said that the leniencies in place in e”y cannot be used in London.
5) Rabbi Roberts says that r’ shimon eider told him that the a406 and a1 are undoubtedly reshuyois harabbim, and cannot be compared to Israeli roads. he has expressed himself extensively on the subject, and repeatedly said that there are questions of de’oiraysa involved.
goldersgreenerParticipantAlthough the מחבר clearly says ששים רבוא עוברים בכל יום nonetheless many פוסקים including ר’ משה felt that his intent was undoubtedly עיר שיש בה שיים רבוא as it said in Rashi. If I understood right, R; Shimon eider, and ylach”t R’ meir rosner שליט”א feel that I the road was intended to serve 600,000, even if not necessarily at the same time or even day it constitutes a רשות הרבים דאורייתא. I think that they have always expressed concerning London that even if one makes various strings and צורות הפתח one is nevertheless transgressing an איסור דאורייתא and is חייב כרת. Rabbi rosner also withdrew his local eiruv from the shefa Chayim when it opened to public traffic.
I assume the mekilim – including מרן הגאון ר’ חנוך ארנטרוי, אב”ד לונדון feel that the mechaber should be understood literally, and with a good eiruv one may carry. [Rabbi ehren trau is מחמיר for himself, but he has expressed numerous times the כשרות of the eiruv.]
I am unaware – due to pure עם הארצות – of the various קולות concerning more than ten אמות, however they were originally quite מקיל, later they fised it up. I thought it had something to do with ראשנים who hold that a צורת הפתח works on more than ten amos, unlike the רמב”ם and מחבר.
According to common belief Rabbi Ehrentrau is a tremendous boki in eiruvin, and is familiar with all the דברי החזון איש, alongside his vast בקיאות in many other סוגיות. nonetheless the majority of local רבנים have expressed the opinion that the ערוב is a ספק דאורייתא, so they obviously feel that even with whatever has been established it still remains a רשות הרבים דאורייתא

goldersgreenerParticipantwas a MAJOR punishment when i was in school to have your shoes taken away. and you would have to walk around in your socks …. even outdoors ….
Don’t think anyone enjoyed it.
goldersgreenerParticipantA pashute yid
The default punishment was that the shoes were taken at the beginning of the school day and returned at the end.
The school day included numerous recesses which boys were expected to leave the building, at the end of every recess a bell rang and there was a line up outside the main door with register and various anouncements, a couple of times a week the day included a sorts session ….

October 17, 2017 7:07 am at 7:07 am in reply to: Reinstitute corporal punishment as a legal penalty #1382731goldersgreenerParticipantBy us in golders Green the PH school had a much better and simpler idea. they would confiscate shoes for a school day.
it wasnt unpleasant to administer, caused no long term harm, was a brilliant deterrent, and a child without whoes is unlikely to pick a fight or leave school gorunds without permision.
goldersgreenerParticipantRR44 thanks for the maro mokoim – i was joking.

J. it’s been a pleasure talking to you too.

If you can somehow link R’ elyahsiv’s last letter i would appreciate it.

By the way are you a regular user who just invented a new name, or did you join especially to discuss the eruv?
goldersgreenerParticipantJ. i’ll be straight, i’m not able to compete with you – i will take a look at your link, but it’s probably beyond me.
.
The way i understood R’ moshe, and Dayan weiss, [Rabbi roberts and Rabbi lieberman,] is that who it depends on who the intended usage of a street is made ofr.
Thus GG road is not a rr de’oyrasa, but the A406 is. This will also explain the position in benei beraq.
.
I started this thread for p’sak, and am personally more interested in the shoes and rabbi k.
goldersgreenerParticipantMods, could we move all the slifkin posts to another thread?
goldersgreenerParticipantBy the way many years before the london eruv story, R’ yosef nosson lieberman, undoubtedly a massive ish emess and yerei shamyim, told his wife to be choisheish the hachaos of ??’ ?”? as he felt GG to have a reshus harabbim de’oyraysa.
You cannot blame that on politics.
goldersgreenerParticipantJ. please give refernces to when Maran R’ elyashiv zatzal agreed with the aikel of the pirtza of ten amois. [If it is true, then ????? i am more than happy to hear.]
goldersgreenerParticipantTo whoever compared London with yerushalayim, there are numerous differences.
.
A) london has more than the ???? ????, ????? ???? ??? required by Maran the igros moshe, yerushalayim does not.
.
B) Many, many people only carry in the local neighbourhood eiruvin, but not over the main roads. This includes numerous yungerleit who shave, do not use genrators on shabbos, etc..
.
C) many roads have gates, even Shmu’el hanovi and bar ilan havepolice barriers over part of shabboss.
.
D) I have heard that R’ moishe shternbuch said that there is a major difference being making a new eiruv and upkeeping an old one.
goldersgreenerParticipantJ. i think it is a little out of place for an anonymous poster to say what dayan westheim should spend his time doing. Anyway let’s face it, the english rabbonim, especially those involved in family issues, are not left with much spare time. ??? ?????? ??????
goldersgreenerParticipant“Just to bring out the point, i was in PH when the headmaster was Rabbi k., the school uniform, including socks, was grey, and before anyone thought of shabbos shoes, so if Rabbi K, took yur shoes, you were in seriusly painful and embaassing trouble. And he did it often.”
..
RR it was be4 crocs were around too. And the school insited that the children spend recess time outdoors. I still rmemeber my wife’s reaction the first time a child came home in socks. [he didn’t generally do it out of school hours.]

When a certain person was matir the original london eiruv, despite it having a pirtza of more than ten amois, unless one uses the chazoin ish shi’ur lekula, then many others, including R’ padwa and R’ E’ halpern refeerred to those who carry as mechalelei sabbos. The person in question went to Maran R’ Michel Ywhuda Lefkowitz, and without telling details of the story told him that people are calling him a mechalllel shabbos. Marna hagrmi”l wrote a letter saying that one may nott refer to him as a mechallel shabbos – although he was being matir carrying without a kosher eruv!!!!!!!!

We need more Rabbanim who are prepared to stand up for the tora.

Zushy, i’m behind you. One punishment doesn’t define a school as messed up. Hefkeirus does.
Anyway, the elemantary school seems to have produced a number of yeshiva world posters over time – so it must have been alright.
goldersgreenerParticipantYour basic point is really really good, i really agree, although b”h i’ve never been there so we can’t judge.
still, we cannot presume we know why hashem created this type of unconditional love.
