takahmamash, Your “~33 minutes on non-laining days (starting at Rabi Yishmael)” translates to a 40 minute davening at our shul which starts from brochos.

OY! I agree. This is one of my pet peeves. We have three minyonim in our shul. The first minyan is a 45 minute one and is called a slow minyan!?

Yeshiva minyonim should take 50-55 min+, as this time of one’s life, when you have no pressure of work or family, is where you should do every thing in the best possible way. But otherwise 45 minutes should be a minimum.

What really upsets me is when a minyan starts late for whatever reason, (previous minyan delayed or waiting for a 10th man, etc) so they ‘speed up’ to finish at the same time.

What helps me is to imagine you are talking to a King, or President, or even a policeman. You wouldn’t mumble as quickly as possible or walk up and down, or read the notice board etc. We have such an opportunity to talk to the Creator of the world 3 times every day!!! How can you rush that?

I think once people see that he is choosing proper politicians for his cabinet, people will realise that he’s for real. He won’t be able to ban Muslims, or build a wall along the mexican border, or put Hillary into jail, or do any of these wild things that got people talking about him…and in two years people will have forgotten what the whole fuss was.

As we say in the UK; Same old, same old.

I am not aware that Rabbi Tanzer was involved in the Yeshiva Gedola. I think you are referring to Yeshiva College. That is a secondary school, also called Beis Yitzchok.

In your last line, you quote “Rabbi Goldfein eventually left to establish the Yeshivah Gedolah of Johannesburg”. That is what I am talking about.

Even if it is technically, the people who run the country, I doubt everyone has access to top secret security information (only email hackers maybe) and things such as nuclear codes etc, as well as power to spend tax money and to negotiate deals with other countries.

Even you in the USA have to daven that the leaders have the seichel to run the country properly, and deal favourably with the Jewish People.

On the subject of Telshe and this week’s worldwide Shabbos Project coming up…

Rabbi Warren Goldstein Shlita, Chief Rabbi of South Africa, who is behind this whole project, holds himself as a Telshe talmid even though he never learned there. The Yeshiva Gedola of Johannesburg was set up by Telshe talmid Rav Azriel Goldfein zatza”l along the Telshe derech. Rabbi Goldfein was a talmid muvhak of Rav Gifter zatza”l and lhbchl”ch Rabbi Goldstein is in turn a talmid of his.

    So there’s out-of-town-Telshe and really-out-of-town-Telshe.

Of course there were Telshe talmidim in the new telshe yeshivos, but it wasn’t a direct continuation of the original. Compare it with the Mir.

The Mirrer yeshiva escaped intact from Mir, travelled across Russia, to Japan and then to China. They then travelled to America and set up there. Meanwhile, the Mirrer Rosh Yeshiva had travelled to Eretz Yisroel and set up a new yeshiva there called The Mirrer Yeshiva. After the war, Reb Chaim Shmuelevitz and the mashgiach Reb Chatzkel joined him. So it was reconstituted, but you could argue that the original Mir is now in Brooklyn, even though the original Roshei Yeshiva settled in Yerushalayim.

    It is Time for Truth,

True, that’s why it’s called Gateshead, not Novhardok. As much as my son isn’t my grandfather even though he’s called after him.

BTW, there is a tenuous connection. My Rebbi in Mir, R’ Nissan Kaplan is from the family of The Alter of Novhardok, (he’s related to the Shmuelevitz’s who are/were Novhardok). He said to me once, Ich bin Novhardok in dem dor. And R’ Nissan is Rav Avrohom Gurwicz’s son in law. So there you go!

Why is using internet inappropriate for the sukkah? We assume that internet is used in conformation with halacha. If you are permitted to work for whatever reason on chol hamoed, then I would think it’s better to do it in the sukkah.

    Abba_S,

Unfortunately, Telshe didn’t manage to escape the horrors of WWII and was mostly destroyed. The Telshe yeshivos that were set up in America are reconstituted, but unfortunately not direct continuations of the original.

    lightbrite,

All U.S. presidents retain their title for life *as a courtesy*, so all former presidents are referred to as Mr. President or President <last name>.

However, after a bit of ‘googling’ around, I see there is some difference of opinion on the matter, regarding their *official* title. This is especially relevant now, as a former president may become the spouse of a president.

Another interesting piece regarding multiple titles, is concerning the former Chief Rabbi Jakobovits zt”l. He was a Rabbi, a Knight and then a Baron and a member of the Privy Council. so his full title was: Rabbi, The Right Honourable, The Lord Jakobovits, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth. To quote from the London Gazette in 1981 “The QUEEN was pleased on Wednesday, 22nd July 1981, at Buckingham Palace, to confer the Honour of Knighthood upon the undermentioned:…Rabbi Sir Immanuel JAKOBOVITS…”.

    in reply to: Which? #1188865

Back to the original fascinating question.

There are a few cultural differences here. For example, In the US, President is a title, e.g. President Bush, President Obama. And they keep their title even after their presidency is over. (So the Clinton’s could possibly be, instead of Mr and Mrs, President & President Clinton). In the UK, Prime Minister is a position. The proper title is The Right Honourable (Rt Hon David Cameron, or Rt Hon Theresa May)(Right Honourable is actually a title conferred on members of the Privy Council, but that’s another discussion). At the end of their premiership, they retain the Rt Hon, and may be referred to as former Prime Minister. I notice that Mrs Clinton is referred to as Secretary Clinton, which would not happen in the UK.

In the Jewish world, as far as I am aware, we in the UK have a unique thing in that a dayan on a beis din gets the Dayan as a title, e.g. Dayan Dunner, as opposed to, let’s say, Rabbi Braunstein who is known as Rabbi. So, when referring to the Chazon Yechezkel, a Briton would say Dayan Abramsky, whereas anyone else would call him Rav Abramsky. The Minchas Yitzchok is known here as Dayan Weiss, but in Eretz Yisroel, as “Harav Weiss der gaavad, (nein, nisht der heintiger, der alter vos hot geshriben Minchas Yitzchok)”.

    A) They wouldn’t admit it. NK use the Satmar Rov as their source (3 shvuos etc), but don’t listen to the current Rebbes of Satmar.

    B) Yes, and gross stupidity.

    C) Chilul Hashem, and sinas chinom. Probably elements of kofuy tov, but they would argue that the IDF has no role in our safety in EY today, it is only the Torah that keeps us going.

    D) Don’t understand the question

    BenK,

The way I see it, rightly or wrongly, is that these so called ‘kano’im’ will not listen to anyone. If you are familiar with the baryonim of the gemora gittin that is learned on tisha b’av, these people are similar.

At the time of the 2nd churban, Rabban Yochanan ben Zakai said that the baryonim wouldn’t let him out of Yerushalayim to make peace with the Romans. This was the godol hador of that time. Those people according to some opinions were ‘frum’ jews who took the law into their hands and had no rabbonim of note with them.

These hooligans, think they are doing the biggest mitzva in the world. They listen to nobody and will not bear the thought of anyone opposing them. They threw stones at Rav Elyashiv zt”l, they continue to disgrace Rav Steinman Shlit”a, and even the Eida’s own Rav Moishe Sternbuch shlit”a. Similar to the ‘Neturei Karta’ (the modern day NK, not the organisation of yesteryear with the same name), they have no gedolim or any recognised Torah authority on their side, yet claim that they speak for Torah jewry.

If the rabbonim oppose them publicly, it will just rub them up the wrong the way, and then they’ll never get anywhere. They would just call them apikorsim who support the zionists.

    I’m open to discussion…
