Nobody (Somebody):
Thank you.
gavra_at_workParticipantMr. Chuck:
Obviously you are very hurt by what I said. That was not the purpose, and I take it all back.
Yes my boss does not mind, I have mentioned this before. It is a good question.
gavra_at_workParticipantChuck Schwab:
Thats why I started the discussion, as to what those standards are and what the posters feel the standards should be.
What do you feel the standards should be?
gavra_at_workParticipantAt least the shadchan got the correct response in the end
gavra_at_workParticipantNobody (AKA Somebody):
I brought it up due to the Bais Faiga question, which I feel should not have been censored. (then again, it may have been something else in the post that got it tossed out!). Then again, R’ Mattisyahu said the bloggers “were not helpful”, but what does that mean Lgabay YWN where we have a moderator to watch for Lashon Hara?
As such, its not only a question of personal conduct (which the mod above has a response), but also what topics are not allowed, and what is grey and perhaps should be allowed. Or do we only allow plain vanilla?
If memory serves, there was a somewhat similar thread regarding who may post.
gavra_at_workParticipantnotpashut:
Since you offered, I would like to see the list of 100 “Gedolai Olam” who are Machmir on being Mevaze members of Klal Yisroel who as R’ Weinberg said are “Tinok Shenishba”.
I just believe most of the “Charaidi Olam” (the Gedolim, not the Kanoiim) are Maikil in this as well, so I will not “Bash” anyone (sad such a good word should be used in a bad way!:-)
Please attach mekoros. I have seen Rishonim misquote each other, so don’t take it personally.
gavra_at_workParticipantMrs Tzippi:
Thank you.
btw ROB, hiddur is 1/3 (or 1/2). Bava Kamma 9a-b.
gavra_at_workParticipantbrooklyn19:
that there are so many different levels is a strong reason to have some guidelines.
Any ideas from you?
gavra_at_workParticipant(wikipedia, couldn’t type this fast enough myself)
In the Midrash on Psalms 118 it states that Bruriah taught her husband, Rabbi Meir, to pray for the repentance of the wicked, rather than for their destruction. According to the story, she once found Rabbi Meir praying that an annoying neighbor would die. Appalled by this, she responded to him by explaining the verse “Let the sinners be consumed from the earth, and the wicked shall be no more” (Psalms 104:35), that the verse actually states: “Let sin be consumed from the earth,” adding that “the wicked shall be no more” because they have repented.
gavra_at_workParticipantmyshadow:
Would be interested in hearing from you as well…
gavra_at_workParticipantJoseph:
Rav Meir & Bruriah?
gavra_at_workParticipantnoitallmr:
Which point is in contention? The flirting point has already been discussed by “brooklyn19” (not to say she’s the one, but she admitts she should be more careful).
Doc himself has admitted there are personal attacks (although I was thinking of someone else).
That being as it may, I would like to get back to the original point.
What do you (noitallmr) feel the guidelines should be for posting?
gavra_at_workParticipantfeivel:
A poet?
As with most poets, you are trying to make a point. In this case, there are dissenting opinions. Please don’t be surprised if people argue with you. The most effective method to do so is to turn your piece on its head.
If your only point was Hiddur Mitzva is better than not, it would not have needed to been made. People took your story as a personal attack. (correctly?)
I happen to like dd’s Moshel. It describes Sinas Chinam and how much Hashem hates it.
December 17, 2008 1:24 pm at 1:24 pm in reply to: The Great Potato Latke vs Hamantaschen Debate —> VOTING IS CLOSED <— #932997gavra_at_workParticipantPotato Latkes: There is time to make them on Chanukah, so they are fresh when you eat them. There is no time on Purim to bake Hamantaschen, so you have to bake them before Purim and they are not fresh out of the oven on Purim.
gavra_at_workParticipantDoc:
Same idea as other thread. I will only discuss this with you if you will answer me back afterwards.
gavra_at_workParticipantDoc:
Are you willing to have a conversation about it, or will you just run at the first sight of disagreement?
If you are willing to discuss (back and forth), then I will answer. If not then not.
gavra_at_workParticipantfeivel:
Parnassa depends on what you put in.
gavra_at_workParticipantI will ask that a certain person/blogger who only criticizes and does not respond when that is refuted or asked for a reason or proof please not post anything.
You are one of the subjects of my post about guidelines (personal criticism), and are the personification of a Troll.
Thank you.
Note to mod: understood if not posted, but I had to try. It disrupts intelligent conversation.
gavra_at_workParticipantbrooklyn19:
btw, why do you feel OK quoting RADAK but not OK with looking up a Rashi?
If its just because one is in a Gemorah the D”H is not a Halachic issue, but Hashkafic, so you can take a look inside lshetscha (if you feel OK doing so), just like you can learn mussar.
gavra_at_workParticipantThe economics angle has not yet been disscussed, which is why the letter is worthwhile.
The issue is not more learners, C’V. May we have such problems in Klal Yisroel!
The problem is becoming similar to that at the time of the second Beis Hamikdosh, i.e. the Pharasees vs. everyone else.
We know where that ended, the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash.
The Chiddush of the letter is that having a job is also a “job” needed in Klal Yisroel. It should not be dismissed as “not being important” or unworthy.
After all, don’t Chazal say “al Shlosha dvorim Haolam omed, Kesef, Mammon & Gelt”? 😉
gavra_at_workParticipantYou’re right, but to claim you are something you are not is Gnavas Daas, and I will not assume that anyone is doing something Assur.
gavra_at_workParticipantSJSinNYC
I admit ignorance. Perhaps a 5T person who has children in HS or BM in Darchei (or your cousin) can answer that.
gavra_at_workParticipantWOW!
Good for the editor for posting.
gavra_at_workParticipantSJSinNYC:
Darchei teaches AP’s, doesn’t ask if you own a TV, but doesn’t allow / discourages college in BM. I think they don’t want to place a label on themselves, which is a good thing for a community school (had some friends who left there and joined me in BM due to the no college issue).
December 16, 2008 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm in reply to: Out Of The Mailbag: (Taking Issue With School Administration) #627686gavra_at_workParticipantGivPerf:
Yes, but when you have conflicting parties you will have conflicting opinions as to what Daas Torah is (as we have seen in the CR!)
There is also the issue of the board having the fidicuary responsibility to the school, and that might be something to take into account.
Ask your LOR is always a good answer.
gavra_at_workParticipant“Non-observant Jews are captives to their upbringing, prisoners to the powerful and enticing society around them. They are not potential baalei tshuva, for they have never consciously left Torah. No, my friends, they are all tinokot shenishbu, Jewish souls that were stolen at infancy and denied access to their rightful heritage.”
Rav Noach Weinberg
gavra_at_workParticipantWould everyone please think before they personally attack anyone.
Also it is customary to add that emphasis was added when it was not placed there by the author.
Thanks.
gavra_at_workParticipantYou quoted it

December 15, 2008 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm in reply to: Television: A Cry of Anguish and Appeal to Our Jewish Brethren 📺 #1192865gavra_at_workParticipantHate to say it, this thread is full of Lashon Hara about both Rav Miller and Rav Soloveitchik and should be closed.
I do not believe Rav Miller, who we (my family) have been close with since he was Rav in Rugby, would say such a sweeping statement about Klal Yisroel just for the ownership. As far As I am concerned, it is Lashon Hara/Motzi Shem Ra to repeat it.
Same with Rav Soloveitchik, I don’t know the answer, but its Lashon Hara to discuss.
Please close the thread.
gavra_at_workParticipantveyatziv:
If they ask, yes (they wiil ask anyone!), but to assume I have because I work (which they do (and say so!)), then no.
Nobody:
“Those who are envious say things like this. Everyone should mind their own business and leave people be.”
As before, (quoting someone) you have proved yourself to ba a somebody.
December 11, 2008 9:38 pm at 9:38 pm in reply to: Out Of The Mailbag: (Taking Issue With School Administration) #627684gavra_at_workParticipantWhy does YWN not post anything about Bais Faiga and the situation in Lakewood?
Mod: OK to delete if that is still in effect.
gavra_at_workParticipantbrooklyn19:
Still no “no”, huh?
You and notpashut get away with much that I don’t get way with, so I suspect.
Please post this. you can always change your name (again?)
gavra_at_workParticipantGood point mod.
The question is what to be Machmir in, Purim or Ushmartem Meod Lnafshosaychem. (The smoking issue is not Purim itself, but that someone may get hooked, or the legal aspects)
I don’t think the Yeshivish Rabbanim “ban” anything on Purim, as they know its a Gezarah shein Hatzibbur Yachol Laamod Bo.
December 11, 2008 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm in reply to: Out Of The Mailbag: (Taking Issue With School Administration) #627683gavra_at_workParticipantBetter than starting a new topic.
There has been much talk about this in the recent days. When should a school close due to lack of money, if ever?
Should the parents make the decision? The teachers? The board?
gavra_at_workParticipantSJSinNYC:
BTW: There are also issues of Bishul Akum with non-Jewish brand Tuna
December 11, 2008 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm in reply to: Out Of The Mailbag: (Taking Issue With School Administration) #627681gavra_at_workParticipantWhat is a school supposed to do if there is just no money? Close?
gavra_at_workParticipantPerhaps you are getting mixed up between Frum and Krum?
Frum is good, Krum is bad.
gavra_at_workParticipantMrs. shindy:
I am treading on eggshells here, and I am not claiming to understand your pain.
I only hope that we can learn from our joint past experiences so that we can have the outcomes we would like to have in the future.
The example which I brought is a real example (with the admonisher (a teacher) using the actual English word, which the Mod would rightfully delete). It has turned this person off from the love of Judaism, even though she/he goes through most of the motions (for various reasons). I can only hope it will be corrected over time.
That is why I shared this. Others should not make the same mistake, and if they see someone else doing this they should try to vacciniate the receiver from the effects.
I would hope others could do the same, so that I can learn what not to do. It is so hard to raise a child these days, I would hate to not have all tools possible.
gavra_at_workParticipantLearning full time is the absolute ideal, if money is not an issue, as the Rambam says in the end of Shmittah Vyovel…
?? [??] ????? ?????? ????? ????????, ????? ???? ????? ??????? ?????? ?????? ???????? ?????? ??????? ?????? ?????? ??????????
???????? ?????????? ??????? ??????? ?’ ?????????? ??????????? ??????? ??? ?’, ???????? ?????? ?????? ??????????? ??????????, ??????? ????? ????????? ???? ??????????????? ????????? ?????? ?????????? ?????? ???????–????? ??? ??????????? ?????? ?????????, ????????? ?’ ??????? ??????????? ???????? ???????????? ?????????; ?????????? ??? ????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????? ???, ?????? ?????????? ???????????? ??????????????. ????? ??????? ?????? “?’, ?????-??????? ????????–??????, ????????? ?????????
”
Granted this means not worrying at all about money, which requires an unbelievable amount of Emunah and Bitachon, and the willingness to literally place your life in Hashem’s hands (not modern Kollel Bochrim!), but this is the ideal.
gavra_at_workParticipantJoseph:
Yasher Koach!
Just one question. Is there any Mekor that long hair is “over made up”? It(in general) doesn’t seem to be vs. an updo (al la Mrs. Palin), which is a short braid.
Also, is hair allowed to be made up for Simchos?
If anyone else has Mekoros for the rest of the list, please post them.
gavra_at_workParticipantYasher Koach.
gavra_at_workParticipantC”V I would accuse a Yid of an outright lie; if you say you are not a mod I will leave it at that.
gavra_at_workParticipantSJSinNYC:
“Sometimes the only thing more dangerous then a question is an answer!”
gavra_at_workParticipantBrisk Mir Lakewood or you aint first rate
gavra_at_workParticipantStill not a denial.
gavra_at_workParticipantIt’s the old story with Adam and Chava and touching the tree. Halacha is not Chumra is not Minhag.
Telling someone that there is a “din vchesbon” (meaning something hot, even if you don’tsay as such, they know thats what you mean) for anything not done to according to your standards is a quick way to get kids disillusioned; I know from first hand experience. Telling them that it is beneath a ben/bas Torah and they are better then that is much more effective.
gavra_at_workParticipantbrooklyn19:
Thats not a denial
