The funniest pleading so far is Mark Meadlow’s petition lst night to have the case against him moved to federal court. He claims that traveling down to Atlanta to “observe” the vote counts, twice attempting to gain access to counting rooms where NO entry is allowed except authorized elections staff, multiple telephone calls related to approving a phony slate of electors etc. etc. all in connection with a STATE election process where Trump’s own Attorney General and FBI director found no evidence of widespread fraud, were nonetheless all done “under the color of his duties as a federal official” rather than as an agent of a political candidate seeking to overturn legitimate election results. Transferring a case to federal court requires that the actions were undertaken pursuant to his duties as a federal official; engaging in private “investigative” work on behalf of a losing candidate and aiding and abetting a conspiracy is NOT part of his job description.

Its all relative. Compared to a lot of other so called “classics” of modern literature, it does provide some positive themes and role models but as others have noted, it also contains some clearly problematic material for a frum child or teen. Even here in the CR, there is no clearly established “bright line” regarding “kosher” books, movies etc. What will work for a MO family whose kids are in a “day school” environment will be a non-starter for more yeshivsh families

The last time I checked, it is NOT assur to be wealthy and enjoy the options available within your means as long as you also providing a reasonable amount for tzadakah. Its obviously preferable to not engage in over the top flaunting of your wealth and to maintain a lower profile. Someone showing up the shul/beis medrash in a bright red, $250,000 Lamborghini Huracan might reconsider and realize there are options other than a Honda Odyssey that are still a bit more tzinisudik than a red Lamborghini. Its called common sense and moderation.

You might want to consult a Rav who also may have some academic/professional credentials in addition to semicha on your overall financial plan and risk tolerance BUT clearly you don’t want someone with no financial training or experience in financial markets to be doing your asset allocations or selecting individual funds/stocks for your portfolio. Your Rav may also be aware of someone in the tzibur or who davens at your shul who does have the requisite skills who you might want to consider as your financial advisor.

Pew is probably one of the best survey research firms in the U.S. The questions they asked were clearly not sufficiently detailed to drill down into whether someone who considers themselves “orthodox” really meets our understanding of the term. Sometime asking these questions does not ask to see proof of milah, whether the mesader kiddushin was qualified to do so, whether there is a “jewish” mother going back several generations etc. Nor do they confront those being surveyed with the inherent contradiction of keeping kosher at home but eating treifus outside the home etc.

SCOTUS has substantially reduced the number of class actions in FEDERAL courts in recent years by making it more difficult to certify a class at the district court level. That doesn’t solve the problem in state courts where a larger number of these cases are being filed.

Nothing I know of at Niagara Falls but if you are willing to drive about 30 minutes, there is a kosher deli in Amherst, just outside of Buffalo. I was there about 18 months ago when we got ticket to a Bills football game and it was a small takeout deli with lots of kosher groceries. Its hidden in one of the big local grocery markets so you have to do a bit of searching to find it.

I actually never heard his original music until I heard Lipa Shmeltzer perform a melody of his work at a simcha about 15 years ago. I then discovered a treasure trove of his work on Youtube . My favorite is Avram Fried’s video rendition of Yaakov!!

Yungerman: An aron that would fit two sifrei torah would probably be at least 40-48 inches wide and 36 inches high and 12 inches deep. A “safe” or steel case that size would likely be really heavy and expensive If theft-proof and fire-proof not a concern, then an aluminum or even polymer wall cabinet meant for garage storage or even a tall kitchen wall cabinet with the doors removed (to make it lighter) and replaced by some fabric covering that would slide open/closed.

Printing out all the CR posts erev shabbos to read on shabbos without the banner ads on the right side of the page would raise the issue of genavah since those ads provide the revenues to pay the Mods

Sadly, BOTH parties are currently pathetic relics of what once were two reasonably sane political movements that disagreed on policy issues but were able to coalesce around bipartisan themes for the good of the country. …just my personal view that the Republicans have so twisted themselves to support the abomination that formerly occupied the oval office that I find great optimism with the moderate Dems.

Yeshivish: Good news for the Jews!!. A frum yid who asks for “accommodation” to leave early eruv shabbos, take off on Yom-Tovim, offer to make up time on Sunday etc. will be better off. An employer will have to show that it would incur substantial costs and/or service interruptions to deny such a request. As noted in an earlier post, this decision may indirectly result in employers not hiring frum yidden in the first place but once they are employed, the firm must make a reasonable effort to accommodate their religious needs.

On a serious note, as Amil Zola noted, if there is a silver lining in these few days of air pollution in the Northeast, its that it provides those of us on the east coast a sense of what folks on the west coast have been living with for years. We were hiking in the Columbia River gorge (between Washington and Oregon) in the Summer of 2021 and encountered some of the most incredibly polluted air from fires in BC and Washington state and the locals told us it wasn’t nearly as bad as some of their prior fire smoke episodes.

You must be looking at the Republican budget plan for FY 24. They have proposed defunding PBS which would likely result in Big Bird (and the Muppets) being niftar.
