The OP speaks to an earlier, simpler time when learning s’shma was the norm and the poishete yidden who had committed to the daily learning cycle in addition to an already busy daily schedule of kids, job, davening etc. were the focus. The same can probably be said of at least one or two posts in the CR every month where for one reason or another the simpler lives of yidden in the alte heim is invoked to make some point about how we have “lost” something with todays, faster, bigger and more technologically sophisticated lifestyle. Change is scary and stressful but staying in place o reverting to the past is not an option when you can access the highest level of kedushah and the most vile pritzus in an instant and the press of a button (or icon).

Asking someone to move from a window/aisle seat to a middle seat to avoid sitting next to a woman (or portion thereof since Reb Yosef seems fixated on fingers) itself is assur since it constitutes tzar ba’alei chayim for flights of an hour or longer. Just use the eyemask that routinely is included with the amenities bag all airlines provide and wear it for the duration of the flight (except for getting up to daven and visits to the lav).

“By out of town I mean out of NY/NJ area..””

I stretched it a bit to include Cleveland (where there are small green sprouts of chassidus in a desert of Litvish hashkafah). It also has the Browns, Indians and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Antwerp is WOOT (Waaaaay out of town).

I would add Cleveland and possibly Chicago to the list….it all depends on what you mean by a Chassidish comunity.. There are rebbeles all over the U.S. who dress in chassidish lvush and give themselves a title (e.g. the South Beach Rebbe”) but its not what I think the oP has in mind. Likewise, there are enclaves of established chassidus living in towns distant from their rebbe.

At a minimum, stand quietly and don’t use the time until the shaliach tzibur starts the chazaras hashatz to schmooze with your chevrah. Its not only disrepectful to the Ebeshter, but it really obnoxious behavior and disruptive to those around you who are still completing the shmoneh esreh.

Big Baal is sort of right…..country music is essentially multiple variations of the same lyrics (aka my good for nothing husband ran off with another woman and also took our only tractor but I found solace in G-d, etc.) sung repetitively in the same key in alternating major and minor chords. Hard to call those kinds of songs ” pruste niggunim” if the lyrics were translated into Yiddish.

KJ ….you are entitled to your definition…most Jews use the terms interchangeably. The United States is a patchwork of land legitimately purchased from other sovereigns as well as very large areas illegally (and immorally) stolen from the indigenous tribes. Not sure anyone really cares. Reality is on the ground.

So should Trump simply invade Mexico and occupy a “safe zone” for 25 -50 miles along the border. It would make it easier to “build a wall” since he wouldn’t have to worry about such annoying requirements as exercise of eminent domain for private land acquisition and doing Environmental Impact Statements for construction on federal lands. An once its done, he can “make Mexico pay for it” as the price for returning their territory (just as we will “take the oil” in Syria).

There are several remarkable new health plans under consideration by the Dems including one that will allow you to have your pet chimp treated under the same coverage as you get with no limits on pre-existing conditions. One catch is that both you and the pet will share the same out-of-pocket minimums and the that you may be required to see a vet for routine health care issues during peak service hours at the clinics.

“Joseph, cite a source that says that one may daven Shacharit when it is almost time for Mincha”

Avi: Get your facts straight before questioning Reb Yosef. He is referring to a new and relatively contrarian hashkafah among some progressive yungerleit in response to those davening shachris vasikim. It began as a minhag during bein hazmanim to avoid having to make separate trips to the beis medrash for both schachris and mincha. This way they can go directly from birchas hayom at the end of shachris to Ashrei for mincha without missing a beat. Having established this time-saving minhag, it has now become popular even after the beginning of the new zman..

Perhaps these “would-be killers” are using the wrong hashgacha. People (aka dinner) don’t walk around with a plumba that the average tiger will understand, much less be willing to accept as sufficient for mehadrim (which is the hashkafah for most endangered tiger species).

People talk with their hands so its probably unrealistic to expect yidden to stand in shul davening like a mannequin in a store window. Some movement is also normal and actually helps to physically relax the body and allow you to engage in the davening with greater kavanah. I think this whole issue involves the extreme shuckling in shteiging and davening that has become a metric to define whether you appear to others as a real tzadik and yiras shamayim.

In every shul I’ve been too over many years, there always seems to be one or two erliche yidden who sit towards the front and pull their tallesim over their head during shmoneh esreh, shuckling with great energy and verbalizing the words of the Amidah very loudly while the Rav of the shul nearby is davening w/o tallis over his head, very little body movement and very silently.

” what about shuckling? One would definitely not behave that way in front of a king. One certainly would not shake his fist at him as I have seen some people do..”
KIds learn from adults and follow their actions. Have you ever watched an entire class of youngsters as young as 5 or 6 years old trying to “out-schulke” one another when davening. Clearly, they have seen this from some of the rebbeim (or maybe the rebbe himself) and are simply copying their behavior w/o any idea as to why. In many cases, they don’t even understand the words of the teffilos but have unbounded shuckling energy.

Well intentioned musar delivered in the wrong way/wrong time can be a very dangerous tool when applied to a younger man/woman whose own hashkafah is weak. Unless you know what your doing, DON”T do it or perhaps arrange for a Rav or somone experienced be the shaliach.

Joseph” GadolH: Had you posted on YWN/CR a decade ago as “sammygol’??

Reb Yosef: Nope, I’m a relatively “new” poster on CR (several years but not a decade). However, your triggered my curiosity into my predecessor “sammygol” so I dug back into the CR archives and searched. One of the first postings that surfaced from back in 2008 was an apparent plea from one of YOUR guys with the screen name of chacham who demanded to know why the Mods allowed postings from a lengthy list of posters he labeled as apikorsim. Sammy, of course, was among the 8 worst offenders he insisted should be banned from the CR. None of the 8 are still regular posters here, so I’m apparently the last of the offenders still around (although unrecognizable as one of the lamid vov virtual CR tzadikim lurking).

It would be more appropriate for the YWN “bot verification” tests to have more of a yiddieshe context where the “correct” answers were only something a “yeshivish” yid would possibly know. For example, “please check boxes showing photos of Ungareshe gefilte fish” The only “correct” answer would be the photo of a 5 lb bag of sugar.

CT Laywer: “So sad to see what has happened to the Beautiful Bronx…”

It will probably bring tears to your eyes if you lived across from the Schiff Center which had been the center of the secular Jewish community in the East Bronx for several decades from after WWI to the 1950s. I’m not sure the Mods will allow a link (below) to a photo of the former Schiff Center today but if not, just google “Jacob Schiff Jewish Center and Bronx” and you will see the photo of a once majestic building with a big sign “El Mundo Super Discount” just below still visible carvings of the shnai luchos with the lions on either side. The paint is peeling off the facade but one can readily visualize what once was the center of secular Jewish life in the Bronx (along with at least a dozen big shuls that are now Evangelical Churches).

P.S. You probably don’t recall an ice cream place (defnitely not cholov yisroel) called Jan’s across from the Paradise Movie Theatre on the Grand Concourse where it was common back then for the MO crowd to go for “dates” on motzi shabbos. I suspect you already had moved on to New Haven by then.

Benph: Thanks for the additional details. I never knew R’ Rubin ran for Congress against Biaggi…a name from the past. I think that Congressional seat is now held by AOC. How times have changed. When I was last in the old pelham parkway neighborhood, the old YI building on Lydig avenue had been sold (probably many years earlier during the severe downturn in Jewish life in the Bronx) and the tzibur had merged with the old “Jewish Center” shul with the much nicer building on Pelham Parkway South. I’m told there actually has been a real renaissance in Jewish life in that area over the past several years.
As far as Mikvahs, somone at the program I attended recalled that there had been at least one functioning Mikvah for an extended period of time at the Mishkenos Yisroel shul on Southern Boulevard but that was in what your refer to as the EAST Bronx and not in the WESt Bronx. (There were also several rebbaim from the Salanter yeshiva over on Webster Avenue involved in that shul)

Their is (and I suspect will be) a constant tension between “changing” halacha to “fit the times” vesus interpreting halacha in the context of the times. Some have analogized the debate to the parallel legal arguments about constitutional jurisprudence and a literal versus textual versus originalist approach. Not that we ever should equate the issues associated with analyzing what the framers in the constitution meant in 1776 versus what chazal had in mind hundreds of years ago but there are some analogies. If we accept the invariant “correctness” of a core set of principles and rules, than we will always need a mechanism to resolve questions on how to apply those as times change. In simple terms, the lawyers have SCOTUS and we have gadolim. For some reason, BOTH seen to work in the large percentage of instances although there always seem to be those dissatisfied by the outcomes.

Benepahraim: I davened many times at the YI of Pelham Parkway (when it was on Lydig Avenue) and R’ Rubin was the Rav of the shul (which at the time may have been one of the largest frum shuls in the Bronx). However, I don’t recall their having a FT chazan every Shabbos. I do recall that R’ Rubin was very well connected politically both in NYC and Albany and he was appointed as the first official “Statewide Rav Hamachshir” in the Department of Agiculture with a staff of “Kosher Policemen” after NYS became the first state to enact strict “truth in labeling” laws regarding Kashruth. Less known were his multiple efforts to undertake special missions overseas on behalf of government agencies to assist yidden worldwide.

A cabbage is round, signifying the annual cycle of the torah readings culminating in simchas torah. When I was back in school, one of our rebbeim would frequently challenge the class to come up with “creative” inyanim as to explain some really arcane minhagim. It was actually fun and you would have been amazed at some of the rationales offered (e.g. cooked cabbage has a smell like that of the schach and décor of a very wet succah by the last of a rainy scuccos).

The vast majority of posts on LinkedIn are either job-related or include material directly relevant to professional matters or substantive technical forums. It would make very little sense for a yid looking for a job or seeking to expand his/her professional network to restrict themselves to a “Jewish LinkedIn” with a tiny fraction of the possible professional openings or contacts. If someone was just interested in socializing or flirting, they wouod use FaceBook, Tinder, J-Date or any one of dozens of other social network websites rather than LinkedIn. Are there a few exceptions? Of Course. But don’t restrict yourself because a few LinkedIn users might not post appropriately.

You can purchase extended warranties for up to 5 years for apple iPhone products within the first year of purchase. There are also lots of small repair shops that will repair iPhones if the “fix” is relatively simple at a cost less than $200 or thereabouts (anything higher exceeds the replacement value of the older phone). Apple is very clear about the term of their warranties and that some products (e.g. the new ear bud earphones) are “sealed” and not meant to be fixed.

Guests with dietary restrictions will ask for ingredients if they are concerned or otherwise advise you of their restrictions when you invite them. If you are using an ingredient typically unexpected in a particular dish (e.g. using real meat rather than tofu or vegetable-based “meat”) you might “volunteer” the special recipe components as in BTW I made the kugel with cauliflower rather than potato. Likewise is you make a dish with ingredients that some might have higher hashgacha standards than your own (e.g. “pre-washed romaine leaves) than also a courtesy to share the information with guests. Otherwise I don’t typically give a detailed printout for each dish served for guests.
