December 21, 2020 8:35 am at 8:35 am in reply to: Toiveling basic George Foreman without cord getting wet? #1930478GadolhadorahParticipant
I was discussing this thread with a friend yesterday evening who suggested that if you are going to insist on using the grill after toiveling, make sure you plug it in to an outlet (or on a circuit) with a ground fault interrupter. Its no guarantee but might lessen the risk of a short overheating and starting a fire or giving you a shock if there is residual moisture that hasn’t dried out. The modern building codes generally require such outlets on kitchen and bath counters near a sink or water source so it shouldn’t be difficult to find one.
December 21, 2020 8:34 am at 8:34 am in reply to: President Donald J. Trump: A Modern Day Alexander the Great #1930476GadolhadorahParticipantJust woke up this AM to hear that lying jerk trying to take credit for inclusion of direct payments in the Covid Bill Congress passed last night. After two week of sulking and ranting n the WH while Dems led by Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) and Republicans led by Senatpor Josh Hawley (R-MO) threatened to block the bill unless there was at least a &600 cash grant, Trump managed to push out a tweet supporting grants AFTER the issue has already been resolved and this morning he is telling Fox its all the result of HIS support. After this weekend’s report from multiple sources that he had a meeting on Friday with his lunatic advisors, Powell, Flynn and Giuliani where martial law was considered, even his long-time supporters have said enough is enough and are like rats jumping ship. If he is not having a nervous breakdwon, he sure is trying to do an imitation of someone suffering from severe delusionand psychosis.
December 20, 2020 10:47 pm at 10:47 pm in reply to: Toiveling basic George Foreman without cord getting wet? #1930311GadolhadorahParticipantAlways ask: Its different than a coat-check room at a Simcha hall posting a sign that they are “not responsible” if your $4,000 streimlach or wife’s mink coat is stolen in an effort to evade legal responsibility. In general, you don’t waive your rights to sue for obvious negligence. However, when someone knowingly engages in an action in direct contradiction to the manufacturer’s guidance, there is a much lesser case to be made for manufacturer liability since there are no reps that the grill would survive a bout with the mikvah.
GadolhadorahParticipant“You need to start a really stupid thread like “I cut off my peyot”, …
Well, probably would be newsworthy if the OP came from Chashuvah Rebbelah I who claimed he heard a vert from some Adom Gadol, who in the name of Chashuvah Rebbelah II that payot were no longer required based on his most recent nevuah.
GadolhadorahParticipantRather than hocking for the 24th time about the 25th amendment, I’d be more concerned about whether the Trumpkopf has already had (or is nearing) a nervous breakdown as now being claimed by several former associates. Bringing in Flynn and his crazy conspiracy theory lawyer to the White House Friday night to discuss the Insurrection Act, martial law etc. seemed like a rehearsal sketch for Saturday Night Live. They even made Crazy Rudy look “normal”.
December 19, 2020 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm in reply to: Toiveling basic George Foreman without cord getting wet? #1929975GadolhadorahParticipantIf someone tells you to jump off the roof of the beis medrash with “real emunah” so that you can “fly” and you follow his musar and fall 3 floors and break every bone in your body, good luck in finding any plaintiff’s counsel who will take your case. If your local Rav/Posek tells you to use an electric appliance in direct contradiction of the manufacturer’s instructions and you burn down your house, unless you are of diminished mental capacity and your LRP was aware of your inability to comprehend what you were doing, I suspect you’d also have a hard time in court. Not sure what a beis din would do.
GadolhadorahParticipant“He did have a propensity for thoughtless tweeting…so instead of cancelling Trump, ban Twitter”.
Actually its not a binary choice. We just cancelled trump, and hopefully there will be some real effort made to impose some limits on the type of lying garbage that can be posted on major social media sites. Indeed, Twitter has indicated that it will begin subjecting Trump to the same standards it imposes on everyone else as of noon on January 20th instead of just labeling them as lies.
GadolhadorahParticipantPresumably, not every subject or issue carries the same level of interest to the Mods as to the poster. After a decade or longer of observing the topics that trigger the greatest level of user response and engagement, I suspect there is a certain intuitive or subject threshold that is used to screen new topics to avoid having the CR drowning in multiple new topics where there is a minimal response to the OP. All of that assumes, of course the OP was “appropriate” and worded in compliance with the editorial standards.
GadolhadorahParticipantWhat about all the students who worked two jobs and weekends to earn sufficient income to pay off their loans. Will the government reimburse them for stupidly having struggled to meet their financial obligaitons??
December 16, 2020 11:12 pm at 11:12 pm in reply to: to tip or not to tip that is the question #1929322GadolhadorahParticipant“It’s illegal for government employees to accept tips…”
Postal carriers CAN accept gifts with a nominal value up to $20 “per occasion” but not more than $50 per year. Cash or cash equivalents (gift cards) are NOT allowed in any amount. Home made foods of any sort are never a good idea. We typically leave a gift box of chocolates or nuts since they easily fit in the mailbox.GadolhadorahParticipantWhy should he give up now….his fundraising emails and texts (I get several daily) pleading with his chassidim to give just $5 or $10 to “stop the steal” is a gold mine. He is raking in tens of millions of dollars each week (90 percent of which goes to his personal PAC) and has NOTHING to do with paying Crazy Rudy or any other litigation expenses. He would be crazy to concede as long as this circus keeps paying big dividends. I’m also happy to see him bleeding his followers for their hard-earned bucks…perhaps when its over and they see how they’ve been fleeced, they might reconsider their support for him and the other Trumkopf waanaabees.
December 15, 2020 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm in reply to: to tip or not to tip that is the question #1928916GadolhadorahParticipantHow much do I tip my favorite coffee room posters?
Perhaps davening that ALL CR posters (irrespective of agendas, politics and mask preferences) should get through the next few months with good health and be the first on line for vaccination when their turn comesDecember 15, 2020 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm in reply to: Did Trump cut off vaccine shipments to Israel? #1928912GadolhadorahParticipantCharlie: But tell us how you really feel…
December 15, 2020 12:02 pm at 12:02 pm in reply to: to tip or not to tip that is the question #1928785GadolhadorahParticipantWe have been leaving larger than usual “holiday” gifts for our cleaning service, landscapers, and trash pickup guys. Also, left a small gift to the office manager of our shul (who has been incredible in coordinating all the zoom stuff, outdoor minyanim etc). There are others who we haven’t seen since March (parking attendant in office garage, fitness center staff, etc,. Haven’t used Uber or a taxi in months nor have we eaten inside/outside at a restaurant so have no idea what others are doing.
December 15, 2020 12:01 pm at 12:01 pm in reply to: Did Trump cut off vaccine shipments to Israel? #1928781GadolhadorahParticipantPfizer has definitely had “issues” with the Trumpkopf since he originally went after them for correctly denying their relationship with Warp Speed and they commercial arrangements they had negotiated. (He was infuriated they did not genuflect in his direction for their vaccine commercialization efforts). Same for their insistence on NOT committing to releasing premature results and filing for an EUA prior to the election to avoid politicizing the vaccine. They were right on both counts as confirmed by Dr. Scott Gottleib , Trump’s former FDA Commissioner and now a Board member of Pfizer.
GadolhadorahParticipantUJM: Apparently, we should just get used for the next 4 years to your entertaining posts now that even you have acknowledged that the Trumpkopf will be dragged out of the WH on January 20th unless he just sneaks out X’mas Eve and flies to Florida never to return. No responsible Dem (or anyone else) has called for the nuclear briefcase to be shared with others.
P.S. I know several neurologists with and w/o agendas who think this whole cognitive decline issue is Fake news but makes for a good diversion from the Trumpkopf’s other diversions.
Again, sorry for your guy’s loss. I feel your painDecember 15, 2020 11:07 am at 11:07 am in reply to: Did Trump cut off vaccine shipments to Israel? #1928757GadolhadorahParticipantThe same “idiot” who for months has done all he can to discredit his own public health experts and scientists who have been trying to minimize the rate of infection pending the widespread availability of vaccines. Even now, he is screaming “its MY vaccine” as if he was personally toiling in the labs 24×7. He should get credit for accelerating the normally slow and bureaucratic approval process but much of those benefits were offset by his denigration of fact-based public health measures to slow the rate of infection.
GadolhadorahParticipantUJM: The fat lady has sung and loudly. Even Moscow Mitch just congratulated President Elect Biden and said he looks forward his inauguration on January 20th. He also said that even if there was one senator who was willing to go along with challenging the electoral college outcome in the Senate (none sofar although one or two in the House) he would shut it down quickly.
Perhaps its time for even you to find a more appropriate thread to push you nareshkeit. Perhaps follow up on reports that the Dems would be bussing in thousands of illegal aliens to vote in Georgia on January 5th in the Senate Race.December 15, 2020 10:50 am at 10:50 am in reply to: Did Trump cut off vaccine shipments to Israel? #1928748GadolhadorahParticipantI think Charlie was referencing the idiot allegedly trying to hold up the shipments of vaccines already contractually obligated, not any of our posters.
December 14, 2020 7:13 pm at 7:13 pm in reply to: Did Trump cut off vaccine shipments to Israel? #1928581GadolhadorahParticipantTrump has asked Pfizer to hold off on ANY shipments of the vaccine to foreign countries until they can at least deliver the required numbers to U.S. His executive order to that effect was very vague and Pfizer has refused to answer any questions about how they are going to deal with their contractual commitments under terms of the Trump EO. He could threaten to use the Defense Production act to negate those foreign contracts but the matter would certainly be challenged in court.
GadolhadorahParticipantIts been over since late at Night November 3, and been over, over as each of the swing states certified its vote. But as of 5:21 pm EST today, its OFFICIALLY OVER, when California voted pushing Biden to 302 electoral votes. DONE, GET OVER IT (excuse my CAPS which I always complain about others using).
GadolhadorahParticipantAvi K: Have you ever smelled a really wet mink streimel close up??
GadolhadorahParticipantFor many of us, the CR is a great opportunity to escape the real world of seemingly unending office Zoom calls and filling in as surrogate teachers for children and grandchildren while offering opportunities to learn from some of the CR regulars and otherwise decompress. Your musar about how we should spend our free time is greatly appreciated and appropriately filed away.
GadolhadorahParticipantToo many times, so called “Jewish humor” was cloaked in terms of racist, mycogonistic or ethno-derogatory jokes which sadly weren’t really funny and perpetuated the types of negative stereotypes through which yidden themselves had been victimized. Many of the “chelm” stories and jokes we heard growing up were fairly innocent and not especially problematic whereas the Jackie Mason/Borscht Belt humor was incredibly inappropriate in its derogatory treatment of goyim and certain yidden.
December 13, 2020 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm in reply to: Toiveling basic George Foreman without cord getting wet? #1928271GadolhadorahParticipantPerhaps some startup company in EY will begin manufacturing a basic line of small appliances that have been made “water resistant” and “toivel friendly”. I’m not sure if the higher costs for “sealing” such items like sandwich grills, toasters coffee makers, blenders, etc. makes it even remotely economically feasible since the large percentage of frum families are not the type that are going to purchase the really high-end, very expensive version of these appliances.
GadolhadorahParticipantThe gerrymandering has been a problem with both parties, although given that there were more Republican-controlled legislative bodies in the 2010/11 cycle, there were more Red states whose electoral boundaries were distorted to assure Republican control than blue states seeking to lock-in Democratic friendly district boundaries. When the Dems took control of both Virginia legislative bodies last year, they suddenly had questions about the wisdom of a bipartisan commission they had previously approved to limit future gerrymandering. After much debate, it was finally allowed to go forward but showed that political hypocrisy was still alive and well on BOTH sides of the aisle.
GadolhadorahParticipantCan anyone suggest how to merge a “shiduch crisis” thread with corresponding threads related to “techeles”, “election fraud” and “toiveling Dominion voting machines”? Would like to make it less obvious when hijacking the OP to more relevant and timely issues
GadolhadorahParticipantYeshivish shprach are VERY contextual. For example, “Azoy”
“Perhaps Trump’s son-in-law) is really Moishiach.” “Azoy?” (really, is that so?)
“..and how are feeling this morning?? ” “Azoy” (so-so).
GadolhadorahParticipantThe “Velt” was wrong pre-covid and will continue to be wrong post-covid. A baas yisroel should value the ability of a bochur to live a balanced life and make at least some contribution to his family while learning. A young woman whose priority is to marry someone who lacks the education and motivation to “work” may not be your beschert anyway so keep looking and good things will happen. Much hatzlacha.
GadolhadorahParticipantCommon Saychel: Minks reportedly don’t make good streimlach and as reported yesterday in the NY Post, there have been numerous Covid outbreaks traced to mink farms. The only positive I can think of is to agrivate the PETA types in the neighborhood.
GadolhadorahParticipantCommon Saychel: You are right. I was on the website of JOE JURGIELEWICZ & SON, LTD., which is a much larger specialty poultry operation which apparently contracts with multiple small farms who license their particular breed of LI ducks and other poultry and Peleh in Swan Lake is one of their suppliers. They advertise the Peleh products on their website exactly the way that Pelleh does but make clear their hashgacha is from OU whereas the Pelleh website is clear that they rely upon Rav Dovid Miller. Not an unusual marketing arrangement but can be confusing.
P.S. The squab product is also “sold out” or otherwise unavailable on the Pelleh website as well so I’ll have to stay with cornish hens for now.December 9, 2020 12:23 am at 12:23 am in reply to: Toiveling basic George Foreman without cord getting wet? #1927260GadolhadorahParticipantTo avoid confusion, Reb Foreman recommends that the grill NOT be plugged in while being toiveled.
GadolhadorahParticipantCS: Sadly, Pellah is “sold out” of king pigeons (aka squab) but I’ll keep checking to see when it comes back into stock. In the interim, I placed an order for some of their Duck sausage. I also found the story of their firm’s history fascinating moving the farm and production facilities from the Hamptons on LI when the land became too expensive to the site of an abandoned nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. Two generations of Cornell U vet school grads run the business. Also, only about 1/3 of the products listed on their website are “kosher” so you have to be careful when ordering.
GadolhadorahParticipantWell, I found the answer to my own question.
“….Pelleh Poultry’s award-winning squabs are young King Pigeons, a variety specifically bred for market (not the ones from Central Park) Featuring tender meat with a delicate gamy flavor, the King Pigeon breed is now the most popular squab bird on the market. At four weeks, the birds have achieved adult size but have not yet started to toughen from the exercise of flying. This is the ideal time to prepare them for the table. Pelleh Poultry receives the squabs from their supplier, David King. and are meticulously processed to the highest standards of (OU) kashruth…”
Well, not Chassideshe hashgacha but I guess pigeons may be more of a Litvishe delicacy
GadolhadorahParticipantCommon Saychal: Where can you find pigeon (aka “squab”) with a good chasideshe shechita? The plumba is likely to be larger than the bird?
GadolhadorahParticipantCharlie: When I was growing up in Pelham Parkway, there were tons of birds (not just pigeons) especially when you headed up towards Pelham Bay. When I went back a few years ago, not much diversity beyond the pigeons. I suspect the proliferation of feral cats may have some role.
GadolhadorahParticipantDoes anyone believe we will ever see a viable third party in our lifetimes? A few months ago I would have assumed a substantial number of traditional Republicans would have split from the Trumpkopfs and reclaimed their long-held policy agenda without all the “America First” isolationism, raciist tropes, vulgarity, and threats against those who disagreed. Given the total silence among the R’s to the Biden win, that doesn’t look like its going to happen anytime soon and they will quietly folllow the Trumpkpf over the cliff. (Perhaps more objectively, they and a good percentage of the 75 million Trump voters will go over the cliff).
December 7, 2020 10:01 am at 10:01 am in reply to: Was Every Married Guy Perfect when they Went Out on Dates? #1926579GadolhadorahParticipant“Don’t bring up politics”
Why not?? Especially if you have very strong feelings about public policy issues and government in general. You don’t want to wait until your in the yichud room and suddenly discover your beschert is a Trumpie or RHINO while you hold strong progressive values. Your political views are very much part of who you are and its something I would want to know about the person I’m going to live my life with.
December 7, 2020 3:49 am at 3:49 am in reply to: Was Every Married Guy Perfect when they Went Out on Dates? #1926474GadolhadorahParticipantThere is no magic formula that will “make it click” for every single person. As much as it sounds like a cliche, just be yourself and soon you will find your beschert. Don’t let anyone pressure you into rushing into the first relationship that goes to a third date unless you really feel the connection.
Much hatzalacha.GadolhadorahParticipantI don’t think you will find any photos or portraits of a “gadol” with a pet dog, much less a cat or gerbil. Going back to the time of the avos, we know that as shepherds, they more likely than not had herding dogs that were work dogs but not household pets. My recollection from some prior exchanges on the this question is that there are some references in gemorah about prohibitions on keeping dogs that pose a risk of personal injury or property damage to neighbors. I would imagine that in the Alte Heim, the challenges of feeding large families precluded the notion of keeping pets for pleasure (rather than as workdogs or cats to control vermin and pests). Even today, i don’t recall seeing a photo of some gadol or chashuvah rav sitting at his shtender learning with a pet schnauzer at his feet. I’ve also heard some argue that there are inyanim regarding walking a taking care of a dog on shabbos that raise questions. At the other end of the spectrum, there are some ehrliche yidden who treat the petirah of a pet like a member of the family, even to the point of engaging in some kind of “levayah” for Lassie.
GadolhadorahParticipantI plan on getting vaccinated on Tu B’shvat so perhaps we establish a new minhag of Chanukah Sheini for those unable to entirely miss their annual quota of sufganiyot
GadolhadorahParticipantHealth; You ask, “What would they hold if I married my Dog….
Would he/she get my Worldly Possessions? In your case, I suspect SCOTUS would make a special exception since you beschert would likely be a perfect match, unless the animal protective services were to file an amicus to protect your fiance’.
Seriously, if at this point in time you are still making analogies between men and women whose lifestyle choices conflict with your beliefs, than those mindless comparisons warrant a companion with equivalent intelligence and compassion.
GadolhadorahParticipantThey have not yet requested a pardon for Barron for cheating on his algebra exam
GadolhadorahParticipantHealth: I wouldn’t look to the founding “fathers” for much guidance on ethics or morality since several of them were gay and others were literally “fathering” children in adulterous relationships with their slaves. The practical effect of the SCOTUS ruling was that gay couples had the same rights to engage in contractual relationships with one another as other couples and that such contractual rights had to be honored in other states beyond those where they had been “married”.
If you don’t like Roberts, I guess you have a problem with Gorsuch too since he supported the SCOTUS decision that sex discrimination laws also applied to LBGT individuals (sine they were literally be discriminated against because of their gender identity.GadolhadorahParticipant“But one thing I give Trump credit for – Right now 5 out of 4 SCOTUS Judges, don’t put Party/PC over LAW!
Geez….thats 125% of the Court. Awesome achievement for Trump. I guess the other 4 of the 9 justices are just political hacks, such as John Roberts and Steve Breyer, who are lacking in any principles or respect for law and will do whatever they are told by Pelosi.
December 3, 2020 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm in reply to: why did our conservative news site go liberal? #1925680GadolhadorahParticipantIn the spirit of hakoros hatov, more than half of the invitees to the annual WH chanukah party have sent their regrets. Well known Trump supporters such as Harvard law professor/Fox News afficiando Alan Dershowitz have declined to attend, most citing concerns over the Covid virus infections at recent WH events. There are some true believers such as Mort Klein (ZOA) who are willing to take the risk and others have until tomorrow to RSVP.
December 3, 2020 7:47 am at 7:47 am in reply to: Shmiras Shabbos is the answer to Climate Change. #1925475GadolhadorahParticipantSyag: We probably need a national “time out” but thats unlikely to happen. Even 4 years of “boring” would be a welcome respite where you don’t get up in the AM and check your news feed to see if martial law was declared overnight, we bombed Translyvania or another hypocritical Dem politician felt an obligation to attend some high-priced reception or fly off to Cabo with his mishpacha while telling everyone else to lock down in their basement until next Spring.
Look forward to your return to the CR when everything is “back to rnormal” or in time for the 2024 election cycle (whichever comes first).December 2, 2020 10:50 pm at 10:50 pm in reply to: Shmiras Shabbos is the answer to Climate Change. #1925442GadolhadorahParticipantSyag: But your original point is duly noted.
GadolhadorahParticipantAt this point, its painful to check in once a day to read the meshugaas being posted by the Trumpkopfs about their latest conspiracy theories or the “treasonous judges” (many appointed by the Trumkopf himself) who won’t go along with his rants and keep kicking Crazy Rudy in the kiester. (and out of court)
Yes, losing hurts but time (2024) is the great healer.
December 2, 2020 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm in reply to: NWO, covid vaccines, and nanochip stupidity #1925424GadolhadorahParticipantIf you get vaccinated, it will include a “free” microchip implanted in your upper arm below the shoulder so that you can be more readily tracked by the deep state. If you need additional “news” to further elevate your anxiety level, watch the president’s 45 minute rambling (and at time incoherent) rant video released by this AM by the WH which incorporates bits of his all-time favorite conspiracy theories from the past 4 years (e.g. the Dominion vote counting switcheroo was coordinated from an underground bunker in Area 52 (no. 51 was already booked for a socially distanced chassanah). Perhaps he should hunker down, chill out and focus on pardons for his mishpacha and Crazy Rudy.
