Lakewhut: You obviously are a machmir on not reading newspapers, watching TV news etc. or your filtering software has gone overboard, either of which presumably accounts for your total ignorance of blanket media coverage of this issue. A simple google search shows thousands of stories on the major national and local news media just over the past month or so. This was a lead story on 2 of the major evening news shows the last week of April and almost a nightly story since. Its the kind of news story every local and national new outlet wants to cover because of its immediate impact on so many families. Otherwise, its a really well-kept secret by the fake news outlets.

Whats “in-town”? Many of us discovered an extra 5-10 hrs/week of time during Covid shutdowns not commuting and working from home. Even a day or two weekly of commuting back to the office now seems like an imposition. Good news is that most clients discovered they didn’t need to pay obscene hourly billing rates and airfares to have us fly to their locations for in-person meetings and could get by in most cases with a video meeting. Not having to navigate the airports and flights for same-day or overnight trips is even better than avoiding the drive back and forth to the office.

10th Window: Sounds more like you fell out of a 10th floor window. Good news is that B’h you survived. Bad news is that you seem to be suffering from some sort of delusional episodes.
Assuming you are not referring to SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome) where rates are noticeably declining, a recent study compared the incidence of “sudden deaths” occurring outside the hospital across highly diverse neighborhoods found that increased sudden deaths during the pandemic was positively correlated to higher rates of virus infection in a neighborhood and inversely correlated to lower vaccination rates.. The analysis appears in Heart Rhythm, the official journal of the Heart Rhythm Society, the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, and the Pediatric & Congenital Electrophysiology Society, published by Elsevier. In any event, NO study found a 50 percent increase in any definition of what you reference as sudden death. There were elevated levels of unexplained mortality but those have been linked to the fact that many individuals deferred medical exams and treatments during the 18 months of the most intense Covid outbreaks and we are now seeing the consequences of medical conditions that might have otherwise been treatable .

Obviously, hishtadlus is a factor in finding the right partner, but ultimately, face-to-face interaction after initial indirect communications through third-parties or virtual/remote contacts is a necessity to affirm the chemistry is there on both sides. If you’ve been hanging out somewhere during Covid or have always telecommuted from OOT, you might want to consider moving back to the American reincarnation of the Alte Heim for your serious dating and hopefully engagement. Location, location, location. Having the resources to purchase a home or rent a nice condo is a great starting point to build on too.

CR trollistic adaptation of classic 19th century German slogan of Kinder, Küche, Kirche (loosely translated as “children, kitchen, church” ) which was used to describe a woman’s role in society. The phrase is vaguely equivalent to the American misogynistic anthem of “barefoot and pregnant” and somewhat more elegant Evangelical X’stian themes of a “special” subordinate role. I suspect that several of our justices likely believe the 19th amendment was “wrongly decided” by Congress and the ratifying states and certainly inconsistent with the original intent of the founding FATHERS.

I’ll try one more time. If you can only afford to fill up the tank in small increments, do so against a 1/4 tank baseline versus empty. The cost for each small refill will be the SAME but you don’t do so playing Russian roulette with you personal safety and risking vehicle damage.
    End of story.

You miss the point. Its not telling them to “eat cake”. Even for a “poor” person, the financial risk of damaging his/her vehicle by letting the gas tank run close to empty would outweigh concerns for the few dollars “saved” by keeping the tank at 1/4 full. Most people need their car to get to work and don’t have the option of using a second car or rental vehicle while there car is in the shop. Just ask any dealer as to the charges for replacing a damaged fuel pump which is the most frequent damage they’ve been seeing as people let their fuel tanks run down to empty.
Just make believe 1/4 tank is the new “empty” and fill up in small increments above that level if that is all you can afford. For many people, their car is essential to their parnassah.

AAQ: If you review the archives, I’ve never been a big Biden fan although I clearly prefer him to his predecessor. With Netanyahu, its a lot more than a few cigars. While he is wildly adored by a large segment of the right, there is a substantial and growing body of politicians across the right who simply revile him and won’t serve in a coalition he heads. Thats not to say he won’t find 61 votes since he historically has been able to buy off individual politicians with promises of cabinet positions, subsidies to their constituents etc.

Then, of course, there was some whaacko on OAN Wednesday am who asserted that the new Justice KJ (who doesn’t even have a building pass yet) and won’t be sworn in to July had somehow breached security and leaked the draft Alito opinion.

AAQ: Other than selling ad space for some prtizus media, there is no reason why a yid should not be able to engage in media marketing given that virtually all marketing sales are migrating to online platforms which can micro-target the intended audience and in some cases also measure positive response rates. I don’t think the Chofetz Chayim (sorry, but the acronym is a bit odd) had contemplated selling ads for doggie beds to the “My Pillow Guy” on OAN or something like that).

AAQ’s point is well-taken. While every family needs to make their own decisions based on their beliefs and hashkafah, today’s kids run circles around their parents and will more likely than not find ways to circumvent most filtering or otherwise find that filters are dysfunctional in terms of blocking legit sites need for their work. We were fortunate that our kids grew up without ever getting hung up on what AAQ refers to as the “crazy stuff” and used computers responsibly and are now instilling the same values and practices in their own kids.

And of course, you know that it wasn’t a clerk for one of the conservatives who was worried that his/her boss might change their mind and work with Roberts to find some compromise.
In any event, at least have the common sense to learn the meaning of “treason”. In the worse case, the legal violation here might be the theft of government property. There were no “national security” implications to a leak of a draft opinion on a social policy issue. The leak was stupid, a breach of trust and contrary to legal ethics, whether it was from the liberal or conservative side of the issue.

Huju: Maybe its a varbeshe thing but running a $50,000 vehicle on a near-empty gas tank demonstrates real empathy with your local dealer’s service department since running on fumes doesn’t provide a means of lubricating the fuel pump (which also uses fuel) increases the chances of the engine overheating and assuring that dirt and sediment at the bottom of the tank will get drawn into the gas pump. Otherwise its a great idea.
Even if cost is a concern, fill it up halfway and generally don’t let the tank go below 1/4 full. Totally separate is the risk factor of her running out of gas on the Belt Parkway late at night or driving around yenavelt searching for an open gas station.

Average (regular) gasoline prices in the NYC metro area last week were $4.12. An older Toyota Corolla gas tank capacity is about 12.8 gallons. Assuming you were not one of those nitwits who lets the tank go to 99 percent empty before filling, the price should have been closer to $50, not $70.

Further, as Wolfish noted, in a global market for crude oil and distillates, no President really has any significant ability to affect gasoline prices on a national level, although certain policies (e.g. EPA rules on seasonal ethanol blends) could have short-term localized effects.

While hiking in the Pacific Northwest last summer, the hiking trail took us along a heavily wooded ridgeline that came out into a open grassy meadow with rows of “boxes”. It turned out to be a fairly large commercial bee hive operation run by a frum couple that both produced honey as well as renting out their hives to local farms for pollination purposes. Of course, UJM is correct IF the wife chooses to do so. There are many “mixed” marriages where the couple retain elements of BOTH haskafahs, generally outside of the nusach of their teffilos. I suspect others have been to shabbos and yom tov dinners, as I have, where the cuisine could be best described as “yiddeshe fusion” . Its NOT a binary choice.
