Whatever one may choose to believe with respect to the Ebeshter’s “long-term plan” for the the olam he created, there are frequently immediate adverse environmental effects of human actions ( or shorter-term cumulative effects) that pose risks of pikuach nefesh and/or material property loss that make it insanity to rely upon some abstract notion of “shomer pesayim Hashem” to inoculate them from those effects. Nor are we permitted to “dump our garbage” on the goyim and simply ignore the adverse consequences we impose on others.

“He’s apparently a very picky cat, and if I serve him anything other than fresh salmon he flies into a tantrum”…

Well, he is really going to freak out since R’ Gavornlik, shlita, just paskined that the tolayim present in virtually all salmon are totallly asur in accordance with the holding of the Shulchan Aruch in Yoreh Deah (84:16). Recent studies have shown that in salmon, the tolayim migrate from the viscera to the flesh and skin. There are still some excellent varieties of dried kitty- kibble with outstanding chassideshe hashgacha that he may learn to love over time versus a painful death from hunger.

Are you suggesting that there should be an ongoing process to “filter out” those kollel yungerleit who are going through the motions of shteiging but fail to demonstrate certain minimum levels of achievement and progress (perhaps through some type of exams). Those who fail to progress would see their subsidies reduced/eliminated and counseled to go out and find a parnassah.

“After 15 years in the system (learning ALL DAY) – THERE IS NO EXCUSE why someone is NOT YET AN ABSOLUTE BAKI in Shas!!….NO EXCUSE!..”

Obviously, all your years in yeshiva left you sorely lacking in common sense and empathy with respect to judging those who did not live up to your expectations. Saying its “not their fault” totally misses the point. Its your metrics, not your measurements.

On a serious note, the incidents of cheating among students in Yeshivos is relatively rare and isolated. The majority of these cases, as reported in the media, are among computer savy public school students who get access to exams which have been distributed to some schools prior to the test date. Even then its more difficult since the sequencing of questions is frequently changed and some entirely new items dropped in.
Over the longer term, these standardized exams are being used less frequently, especially those like the SAT, LSAT etc. which historically were a primary tool for college and grad school admissions. Other tests like the Regents exams which are designed to measure proficiency in certain subject areas for advancement or graduation will probably continue, but even those are being refocused in the name of “equity”.

“So you don’t see anything wrong with learning Gemora from women?”

Absolutely not, unless you prefer to wallow in your ignorance derived exclusively from male sources. If a woman can provide a more intelligible and accessible pshat on some sugyah you have previously had difficulty understanding, you’d be a real jerk to avoid reading it simply because it was WRITTEN by a woman.

Reb Yoef: You obviously woke up too early and arehaving a difficult time distinguishing sarcasm from reality, other than your own. Its been a long while since I took the NYS regents exams and don’t recall how easily it was back then to access a cheat sheet but I’m certain your resourcefulness would have overcome the barrier. I do recall that for the SATs, there was a network of bochurim who spoke with their non-frum contacts motzi shabbos who had taken the exams on Saturdays and were generous in sharing their collective knowledge to their chavrusah who were taking the exam on Sunday.

Not clear why the concept of “extinction” of certain species is not compatible with a belief in a dynamic evolution of the world with all occurring in accordance to bio-physical principles promulgated by the Ebeshter. New species evolve over time as old ones go extinct. New technologies allow for reintroduction of biological clones of what are believed to be extinct species. Its not apikorsus to believe in some overall plan for these dynamics.

Who are the Gedolim to visit?

Huh??? You make it sound like a tourist with limited time going on TripAdvisor and searching for the
“10 Top Sites in Yenavelt”. There are plenty of gadolim at home (if you are coming from the U.S.) so you don’t have to go shopping for barachos and segulahs in EY. More to the point, as Yungermans notes, just try a direct visit with the Ebeshter and forego the intermediaries.

” we want to be able to say what we want and have a normal conversation…”

Clearly, you should be posting on the new Trump social media site called “Emes” (aka Truth Social) which was created with the promise of no censorship and free expression. Unless, of course, you happen to post anything which expresses doubts that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him or that he cheats in golf. Alternatively, make believe you are the next Elon Musk and simply purchase YWN for $46 billion and fire all the Mods and allow everyone to “say what they want”.

We have had multiple threads over the years about complaints from neighbors that frum residents let garbage pile up on the street, fail to mow their lawns or maintain their shrubs etc. one of the responses is that somehow, the time associated with such activities is bitul torah or that large frum families cannot be expected to adhere to a goyishe “suburban aesthetic”. A nutcase on EITHER side of the political spectrum should never be able to purchase a gun. Individuals recently committed for psychiatric care and/or on medication for serious mental health issues, someone posting threats of violence on social media, individuals with prior criminal records as a juvenile etc. are NOT flagged under our current system of background checks and Republicans are totally opposed to expanding the system as a form of unconstitutional “prior restraint”. I couldn’t care whether its Proud Boys, BLM or Troglodytes for Trump, they should never be allowed to access a gun. YUes, they could still commit horrific crimes with other weapons but more difficult

There were [and still are] many religious Zionists going back to the late 19th century who expressed similar perspectives but added a duality of needing to provide an economic and national security framework wherein those dedicated to limud torah could coexist with a secular population. In those days it wasn’t as much of a binary choice between secular and frum.

Just about every advanced economy in the world has adopted varying degrees of recycling both because of the favorable economics and some cultural/ethical version of “tikun olam”. In NYC and other major metro areas which are literally running out of space to dump solid waste, recycling provides for a small reduction in the need to export trash to more rural states at great cost to taxpayers. Even in developing economies, recycling in its most basic form is an economic imperative and the “waste” of the affluent literally provides economic sustenance to the more impoverished segments of the population. In countries like India and China, there are literally millions of people who survive by sorting through the waste dumped at landfills to find whatever they can resell for a few dollars a day. It becomes a “scam” only when there is no economic or environmental rationale for a particular recycling program and it is being done for some abstract “conservation” reason.

The core debate is not the warming trend per sei, its the first derivative of that trend or the rate of change. In brief, the argument is really over whether the available data is sufficiently reliable over a sufficient long time horizon to reach any decisions on the relative contribution of human activity to what most scientists now believe is an accelerating rate of warming.

The school in Texas did have a trained security guard who this shooter was able to get by. The classroom had been hardened to keep OUT a shooter but he got in and locked the door so that police could not enter for over 25 minutes. They finally thought to ask the principal for a key which is how they finally entered and took him out. By that time, he had slaughtered 18 kids and teachers.

Sadly, it more likely that rabbonim and gabboim will accidentally end up shooting the shaliach tzibur or baal koreh in the foot than taking out a real terrorist. If at risk, pay for a trained security guard during davening. Yeshivos in most major states already are eligible for public funding of security guards.
