Perhaps one of the most challenging concepts in yiddeshkeit is explaining the concept of “zman moishiach” in clear and intelligible terms that can be understood by a poishete yid who has not read all the meforshim and more contemporary meforshim that are tossed around on threads here in the CR. The terminology used is abstract with loads of superlative adjectives that most would have a hard time relating to and understanding how their daily lives would change on Day 1 of a post-Moishiach world.

In a rare case of agreement, UJM’s comments about retirement is entirely correct. Subsequent to his “retirement” as a neurosurgeon and NASA rocket scientist, he has been working as Walmart “Greeter” for nearly a decade, sharing his charm, warmth and empathy with all who pass through the doors.
On a serious note, I think we all know individuals whose “decline” either began or accelerated substantially following their retirement, especially for those whose life and social network revolved around their professional engagement and structure of getting up every AM, driving to the office, checking emails every 5 minutes etc.

What is your style and what do you mean by “too Israeli”?? would you prefer a Bedouin tent close to Chevron? You talk about a “cheap dirah”. Lots of those available in older buildings in both frum areas of Jerushalayinm and outer ring suburbs., some of which are firetraps with dangerous wiring, propane stoves, no a/c and dark but what you pay for is what you get.

Ruchniyus versus Gashmiyus is a false alternative if there is a balance and the choices are correctly framed. Not all gadolim live in dingy apartments with few amenities and are dependent on modest donations for their survival. Nor does toras moshe or the concept of hidur mitzvah dictate spending tens of thousands of dollars to fly the family to South Florida and rent a Villa for yom tov or to spend $75,000 for a new all electric Tesla or BMW to be mehader the woke mitzvah of tikun olam. A balanced life of learning with time for a parnassah assures that one’s life is not driven by an instiable appetite for opulence.

CA: I never equated Agudah to MAGA. I said that segments of the so-called New Right Christian evangelicals would throw yidden under the proverbial bus “faster than you can say MAGA”.
I have great respect for Agudah’s work, both in DC and state capitals. I have no real insight but suspect that R ‘Chaim Dovid Zwiebel is not a big MAGA fan but has to deal with political world as it is. I’m concerned for reasons noted earlier that there are risks for Agudah and any of the politically active yiddeshe mosdos to get too far out over their skis on some of these alliances.
    Enough said.

For those too young to recall the last real effort to use UJM’s price control model to address escalating energy prices, the Carter administration attempted to impose price caps on crude oil and distillate products during the OPEC oil embargo in the late 1970s. It was an unmitigated disaster and did little other than further shrink domestic supplies and provide a generation of lawyers with full employment in litigating lawsuits against the DOE rules which weren’t finally resolved until 2005.

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I’m not equating Agudah or any yiddeshe mosdos to the Evangelical Christian groups with whom we occasionally find common positions. I am very skeptical of the their motives and longer-term agenda for Yidden and EY. Personally, I’m not all that interested in being a participant in their armageddon plans for z’man moishiach. Some of the same evangelical wingnuts that Trump invited for the opening of the U.S. Embassy in yerushalayim are also part of a traveling circus with former General Michael Flynn, the Pillow guy and other meshugaim advocating for making the bible (aka NT) and “God’s Natural Law” the ultimate governing framework for American jurisprudence.

“We would have ceased to exist long ago, if we had subscribed to Judeo-Christian values as the basis of we are…

nOmesorah makes a really important point. Those like Agudah who are issuing press releases applauding the Roe decision and kvelling about the Republicans pledges to restore America to its founding “Judeo-Christian” values really have zero interest in the Judeo part. While you may see an occasional frum yid with yeshivsh lvush, black hat and beardl lined up in the photo ops, their concept of yiddeshkeit is more aligned with Jews for Jesus and evangelical messianic dogma. They would throw us under the bus quicker than you can say MAGA (not that the left-wing Dems are any better).

CT Lawyer: I’m certain R Yosef is fully aware but is just getting off on eliciting his usual trollish responses. As noted elsewhere, Kavanaugh’s concurrence today was explicit on the right to travel out of state for abortions in states such as New York and yours where it is entirely legal. In fact, a law just enacted protects medical providers and patients seeking abortion care who come to Connecticut from other states along with expanding access to abortion in Connecticut.

UJM: Your application for EITHER model would likely trigger immediate legal filings by CR posters under Article 63-A of the NYS Civil Practice Laws and Rules (“Red Flag Law”) setting forth the facts and circumstances justifying the issuance of a temporary extreme risk protection order by a State Court when there is “probable cause to believe the respondent is likely to engage in conduct that would result in serious harm to himself, herself, or others, as defined in paragraph one or two of subdivision (a) of section 9.39 of the mental hygiene law.” Yesterday’s SCOTUS decision had no effect on such laws.

UJM: Thanks for the clarification…..assuming you lived downhill from the cheider, you would have to walk “uphill” in the morning but in theory, that would result in a “downhill” walk to return home, unless your parents moved during the day to a new home further uphill from the cheider, which would reflect TWO uphill barefoot treks in the snow, but only for ONE day. Perhaps you are speaking metaphorically in terms of your raising up your neshama through the time you spent learning your alfeph beis, harassing the girls at the adjacent beis yakov during recess or building LEGO models of the beis hamikdash such that every trek in the snow was an uphill spiritual journey.

“No other president has garnered so much attention while outside of office..”

True, but consider WHY. Historically, FORMER Presidents don’t continue litigating election outcomes once they leave office. Go back and look at every modern era President and you will see a uniform pattern of allowing their successor to govern w/o daily commentary via call-ins to major TV morning shows, much less a constant stream of news releases on what looks like WH stationary engraved with “OFFICE OF THE 45th PRESIDENT”, news conferences from behind a podium with a presidential seal and political rallies as if in the final weeks of a presidential campaign. The Donald can’t stand being out of the public spotlight an HE is inserting himself into our daily news cycles.
Would there still be a degree of TDS if he suddenly shut up, shut down the MAGA rallies and took up painting like GWB or teaching Sunday School like JC. Of course, but nowhere near the
circus show he himself creates and continues to sow turmoil wherever he goes.

Improved efficiency through robotics and AI will partially offset the declining work force issue. For EY, its a tension between having higher population growth but finding socially and politically acceptable programs for assuring younger men and women are at least working part-time and contributing to GDP growth rather than being net recipients of social welfare and transfer payments funded by a declining workforce.

“I expect the naviim who post here will have a definitive answer”.

We do. Economists define a “recession” as a decline in industrial activity using the standard measure of the value added created through the production of goods and services (GDP) in two successive quarters. Currently, such a decline in GDP appears likely for Q4 2022 and Q1 2023 based on multiple forecasts but reverting back to positive growth by Q2 or Q3 2023. Thus, we are likely to have a recession, but relatively short-lived within an overall secular growth trend.

“Brandon strifled the domestic gas production hence less supplies…”
As someone observed, the level of ignorance here is breathtaking…
The mods prefer we don’t post URL links but if you go to the DOE website (EIA.gov) and luse the dropdown menu to link to “U.S. Natural Gas production”) you will note that the monthly natural gas production when Trump left in January 2021 was 2.876 MCF…..the most recent monthly production for April 2022 was 3.187 MCF.
Conventional wisdom suggests that 3.187 is a larger volume than 2.876. The figures for May and June will be even larger since producers ramped up marginal production capacity when Russia invaded Ukraine in March 2022. As world prices spiked over the past 90 days, foreign demand made it substantially more profitable to convert U.S. production to LNG exports to Europe where it was priced at $30/MMBTU (including conversion and transport costs) compared to domestic commodity prices (Henry Hub of about $9/MMBTU).

Oil companies are neither public utilities subject to cost of service regulation nor charitable organizations focused on public welfare. They function in a global market where prices for crude are set largely by OPEC production decisions and distillate products by refining capacity and short-term demand. We don’t tell sellers of $300 esrogim from Italy to “be patriotic” and sell their products for $50 so the poishete yid can be mehader mitzvah like his affluent brehthren. Their current prices aren’t even the highest (in real terms) relative to prior supply disruptions. Biden’s stupid comment to “be patriotic” and cut prices is indicative of the political and market economics naivete on BOTH sides of the debate.

With the exception of a relatively smalll (35K b/d) refinery west-Texas refinery built in 2019, there hasn’t been a major new refinery built in the U.S. in nearly 50 years spanning both Democratic and Republican administrations. Existing refineries are running near 100 percent capacity so even if we had additional crude imports, they couldn’t be processed in the near term. The combination of a post-covid surge in demand and the loss of Russian distilled product are the primary cause of recent price spikes and it has little to do with Biden. In the longer term, however, when demand levels return to normal and Russian product is back on the market, Biden’s policies could keep prices at above market levels since his “excess profit” rhetoric and constraints on new pipelines will limit incentives for expanding U.S. refining capacity. Refiners don’t want to invest in new capacity unless they are assured of reasonable returns and those assurances are sorely lacking.

a m Condensate splitters are distillation units that process condensate, which is lighter than crude oil. Splitter capacity is included as atmospheric distillation units in U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data.

However, the newest refinery with significant downstream unit capacity is Marathon’s facility in Garyville, Louisiana. That facility came online in 1977 with an initial atmospheric distillation unit capacity of 200,000 b/cd, and as of January 1, 2021, it had a capacity of 578,000 b/cd.
