“Also, waze was developed in Israel. I don’t know whether team is still there…”

Noam Bardin, who was the CEO of Waze from about 2009 through the Google acquisition, just left the company in mid-2021. He split his time between the NYC metro area and Israel and kept much of the original tech team intact after the Google acquisition. Recently, however, much of the Israeli team has dissolved.

    Memo to file:
Drinking hot tea will provide some short-term warming affect to the body but generally not result in maintaining a warm body temperature over a sustained period of exposure to freezing temperatures. Adding some sugar to the water might extend the warming benefits. Adding alcohol may actually be counter-productive even though it may induce short-term feeling of “warmth”.

“There’s a button to press that takes a split second… [and] it lets Waze know that there’s a cop on the side of the road”

Perhaps the OP, in his usual creative mode, is thinking about how this really great app can also address another one of his priorities which is how to alert yiddeshe neshamas about a potential exposure to pritzus. Specifically, why couldn’t the software engineers add a new “Tzinus Alert” button along with those for radar traps and speed cameras that would warn you that there is an inappropriately dressed woman about 4 or 5 blocks ahead so the driver knows to shut his eyes while driving along that stretch of the road.
P.S. And the driver behind him can use the Waze “accident alert” button to notify other drivers that the ehrliche yid in front of his car had just crashed into a double parked delivery truck while driving with his eyes closed.

Naming buildings after individual donors carries some risks. We all know of several recent cases where years AFTER the donation, there are negative developments with regard to that individual or new information becomes available that requires distancing. Do we really want to have a Madoff’s or Epstein’s name on the facilities used by yiddeshe mosdos??

Avram: Your reading of my post was that the Tana in the Mishna “made up” the 18 yo age for kiddushin w/o any basis. Not what I said. There had to be some rationale for 18yo (versus 17 yo or 19 yo)……it is an age level where he believed that a young man was READY to assume the responsibilities for marriage and presumably, his conclusion was informed by his own experience, based on what he knew at the time. If the age was simply a function of the earliest age when a young man could produce children, the mishna would have said 14 yo.

As to your belief that one should marry w/o regard to their ability to support themselves, some of us disagree. If they have parents who can readily support them, fine. If not, they have some responsibility to accrue the resources w/o forcing their parents to beg for money. Its within their ability to work and obtain those funds on their own. If they choose not to, thats their decision. My reference to W-2s did not establish a wealth test for marriage. If you intention is to have children asap, then its also your responsibility to be able to provide for their medical care, food, housing etc. (or should the parents go out and beg for that money too after they’ve finished paying off the caterer).

Lets be clear. No one here has been arguing in support of women dressing “provocatively” (or at least I’m not). My concern is that there is a spectrum of tzinius concerns (aka “not all ervah is the same”) and there seems to be a tendency to push the limits where musavr over an inch or so around the elbow or knee has become a more frequent rant

Reb Yosef: Can the beis din “force” the parents to pay for the chassanah and a dirah in in one of the nicer neighborhoods?
On a serious note, are you aware of any contemporary beis din that has attempted to enforce the admonition of the mishna in Pirkei Avos? A bit unclear how such a psak would be enforced against an unwilling bochur. Would the beis din retain a shadchan (in the manner that a secular court may sometimes retain its own counsel and expert advisors) and then haul in a reluctant bochur and his “un-beschert” with the av beis din being mesader kiddushin)?

The mishna in Pirkei Avos sets forth the principle of Shemoneh Esrei L’Chuppah which is generally understood to mean that one should begin searching for their kallah as soon as he is physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially able to do so. At the time of the mishna, its quite possible that those criteria were frequently met by many bochurim around the age of 18 (or presumably, that was the Tana’s recollection of when HE felt prepared for marriage. Nowhere does the mishna make shidduchim contingent upon a W-2 showing sufficient earning to support his wife and family because in those days, the majority of bochurim reaching the age of 18 did work and earned a parnassah. As society evolved, the age at which most young men were emotionally and financially prepared to support a family has also risen to their early 20s so application of the principle can be understood to have evolved as well. However, nowhere does the Mishnah mandate that the parents of the prospective choson impoverish themselves in the process, whatever his age.

“if calling out sins and not embracing sinners as our brothers is “subjugation” then so be it…”

It seems that thou worries a lot more about “embracing sinners as your brothers” but less so about condemning your sisters for matters that are really your brothers’ concern. And I respectfully disagree that the tone of a material percentage of the tzinius threads is balanced versus implicitly misogynistic. Women should work to understand what you reference as the “nisyonos” of some men in the tzibur but I don’t sense a reciprocal concern with how some of the demands for greater adherence to tzinius guidelines can both degrade and subordinate women.

Those of us who believe that a modicum of financial independence is a condition precedent to kiddushin are clearly in a minority. However, as others have noted, forcing the parents to wander around the beis medrash or going door-to-door begging strangers for funds to purchase housing for their kids or pay the caterer would appear to be a self-inflicted form of humiliation for parents who should “just say no”. Definitely assist within your means but don’t jeopardize your own economic well being.

Takamamash: Kol hakovod having two kids who were responsible individuals who recognized that marriage means taking responsibility for their own expenses and are working and studying to earn a good parnassah so that they are not dependent on others. Its great when parents have the resources to assist in the chassanah and even help out a bit for the first few years of married life as we did with our kids. However, the notion that parents should purchase apartments, pay rent and subsidize living expenses in perpetuity is bizarre and even worse is the sense of entitlement of many kids who expect such parental support. I’ve read more recent studies that many parents who feel obligated to provide such support to their childeren are often ill-prepared to finance their own retirements and the problems is only growing worse as fewer employers offer traditional pensions.

“What does that have to do with the soul-destroying power of pritzus in the eyes of a jewish man….”?

When obviously misogynistic trolls are cloaked in an obsessive concern for tzinius and triggers broad hyperbolic generalizations, its a big concern. “Pritzus”, as broadly defined by the
“tzinius police” encompasses both real socially destructive forms of addictive behavior and borderline criminal activities that are incredibly harmful from both a physical and spiritual perspective. However, when otherwise “normal” activities such as hearing a woman’s recorded voice or seeing a short clip of women dancing at a simcha are equated to porn addictions etc., it often becomes an effort to rationalize subordination of women in the name of protecting the neshama of some guys who need to work on their own issues.

Really stupid question: If you cannot afford a wedding, scale back the plans to what you CAN afford. Invite fewer people, limit the costs of food/drink served, don’t rent a big simcha hall, etc. etc. Most importantly, if you cannot afford to even purchase a bed, some dishes and pay the rent, perhaps you should think about deferring kiddushin until one or both of you have some income and resources so that you are not literally begging money from strangers.

The core issue is that our mosdos are chronically underfunded so that we are not in a position to analyze whether a potential donor is seeking recognition for his/her donation beyond the basic diligence to assure the source of the funds is legit and the donation doesn’t violate any applicable laws. Of course, there are obvious red flags where using the name of a certain donor may not be entirely compatible with the mission of a particular organization (e.g. a bit of cognitive dissonance to reading about the great work being undertaken by the “UJM Institute for the Promotion of Professional Opportunities for Bnos Yisroel” or a Brass Plaque acknowledging the Generosity of R’ Yosef for funding the new Varbeshe Kiddush Club that will be meeting in the small closet in the basement previously used by the shamas for cleaning supplies).

AAQ: All your points are correct BUT I’d respectfully submit current economic metrics are NOT fully supportive of the definitions you invoke. That point has been made this week and last by most of the major banks reporting Q2 results (aka we MAY have a mild recession in late 2022/early 2023 but we are NOT there yet and there is a likelihood we may not get there even though there will definitely be a slowing from the post-Covid surge in growth in late 2021. And I clearly noted that NBER is useless for forward planning given it is looking backwards. (I actually worked briefly with NBER in my grad school days).

You are not dealing with Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons $800-$1200/night in the Catskills…..there are several old-line, full-service heimeshe hotels like the Raleigh which offer basic, family size rooms for as little as $250-$300/night, INCLUDING meals (with glatt hashgacha). These are in the older sections of the hotel. If you want to splurge a bit more, you can get more modern rooms in the newer sections and cottages. I think the Raleigh still has a shul on the premises. Other hotels are within walking distance of shabbos minyanim

Officially, the National Bureau of Economic Research’s Business Cycle Dating Committee makes the actual call on a recession, which NBER defines as “the period between a peak of economic activity and its subsequent trough, or lowest point.” NBER’s analysis of a recession hinges on three key attributes: the depth, diffusion, and duration of a slowdown in business activity. In most cases, the NBER doesn’t make the determination until late in the recession or after the economy has emerged. Even though the shorthand “test” of two quarters of negative GDP is frequently used by the media and politicians, the Dems are stupid for “redefining” when the data doesn’t look good for them. But as Powell noted yesterday, we’ve never had a real recession with employment and savings numbers like those we have now and the absence of other indicators like big spikes in credit and mortgage defaults.

And on a related note, some may recall the discussion here several months ago after the Senate nearly unanimously passed a bill calling for year-round daylight savings time. This would have created a bit of a challenge for daveners since sunrise in the midwest would not occcur until 8 AM for over 135 days/year and after 9 AM for roughly 30 days a year. (whether the earth rotated around the sun or vice versa). For those ehrliche yidden who have already received permission to leave early on Fridays to get home before licht benchen, asking the boss to arrive an hour late 1/3 days of the year (and even later on Mondays and Thursdays) might have been a strech.
Anyway, the House leadership announced yesterday that they have no plans to bring the Senate bill to a vote on the house floor in the foreseeable future (aka DST is DOA)

As of June 30th , the average price of a dozen Grade A large eggs in the U.S. was $2.86, according to Federal Reserve economic data. This is up about 16% from prices a year ago. The Department of Agriculture has explained that egg prices have risen this year because of an inconsistent supply of eggs due to multiple factors, the most important of which are a major outbreak of Avian Flu (resulting in destruction of hundreds of thousands of chickens), increased energy costs for egg producers and labor shortages.

Your perception of electricity supply sources is about 10 years out of date. In 2021, Texas — the nation’s leader in renewable energy — generated most of its renewable electricity from wind turbines. On some days, that was well over 90 percent of total power consumption. Nos. 2 and 4 on the top 10 list Washington and Oregon take advantage of huge hydro power sources to obtain the large percentage of their electricity. California, which No.3 in total renewable production, uses a mix of solar, wind and imported hydropower over the NorthWest intertie. Several other western states get more than half their electricity from renewables. The DOE/EIA website provides state by state listings of each state’s percentage of green electricity.
