Irrespective of the source, the concept is a core element of many kiruv efforts to bring disenfranchised yidden back to the fold. The question is really HOW it can be done most effectively. Past studies have shown that to be successful, outreach needs to be sustained over time. While a one or two time “experience” of true simchas shabbos done in the home of a frum family is a great start, there also needs to be follow-up outreach to have long-term success.

Nomesorah: Its a matter of preference. I so hate the airport check/in boarding process to the extent that one long non-stop flight is my choice wherever possible w/o a connection as long as I can get an upgrade to business (very infrequent) or premium economy on the aisle so I can get up and strech every hour or so. Otherwise, I agree and would never do a 10-12 hour flight if there is a risk of center or window seat. (Some like the window seats on overnight flights because its easier to sleep. I generally can’t get more than 2 hrs nap on an airplane, even with an Ambien.)

While you can certainly obtain excellent training online, the top professors and degree programs still involve in-person learning.

I’ve flown up front on several 12/13 hr flights to Japan and Dubai and the obscene prices (which clients paid) were not worth it if I had to pay out of pocket. I don’t drink alcohol on long flights and have a hard time sleeping on the “flat beds” which they promote as a key feature. You also get the same “kosher” meals wrapped in plastic while watching the sushi and filet mignon served to the guy sitting next to you. The ONLY real advantage for me is that its a bit quieter in First, less likely to have a screaming baby sitting next you, and shorter lines (if any) for the Lav. I’m a big fan of the premium economy, where I purchase regular economy and use my upgrades to get a wider seat on the aisle. Sometimes, when flying off-season you can get upgraded to business but those upgrades seem very rare these days.

Believe it or not, there are a very significant number of frum women who are able to acquire the needed academic and job skills to earn a good parnassah, make significant contributions to their community working in the fields of medicine, public health, finance and law, while still living a torah life. Desparate is correct: YU doesn’t allow enrollment in a secular degree program unless you are fully participating in the full yeshiva program. There are some narrow exceptions for individuals to “audit” certain secular courses that are approved on a case-by-case basis, but these are not credit-granting degree programs.
Ditto for United. I flew over last week with my grandson who was running in the Jerusalem marathon and came back on Sunday. Seats in the Premium economy were comfortable but still affordable. (You need to take a second mortgage for first class and upgrades never seem to be available) United staff were courteous but firm on enforcing the carryon rules (especially with regard to the usual nutcases trying to squeeze a steamer trunk in the overhead bins). Food was actually good for airline food. Most importantly, flights left nearly on time.

Its not just “secular” studies. Teaching American history or algebra alone would not address the underlying social and psychological problems driving this small segment of teens to engage in disruptive activity. Nor is it unique to the yeshiva velt. It requires comprehensive outreach involving the family, schools and mental health professionals working together, something lacking across society in general and not just in frum communities.
$30-$35/lb for higher end shmurah seems to be the norm this year. Purchase in person if you can rather than online. Last year I made the mistake of ordering for shipment and box didn’t have 3 intact pieces.
Guteyid: There IS a problem when the schools and other mosdos in a community mindlessly pretend that all bochurim should be shteiging 24×7 and ignore the non-conforming segment of yungerliet who for various reasons don’t fit the mold. However, if it could be shown that a Rav actively encouraged excessive drinking leading to a death or serious injury, he would definitely be open to prosecution and incarceration if the facts are verified.
