“There never was a point in time that all Jews had beards. It’s a straight forward sugya until we get to using one sharp blade on specific points of the face. So please don’t use Harry’s….”

Only in the CR does a pragmatic question on wives working to support their kollel shteiging husbands morph into a debate on the fine hairs of shaving with straight blades versus electric razors.

CA: Actually, I didn’t intend to trigger a debate on the rebbe. I read enough of those to the point where some breaking news on the shidduch crisis would seem more relevant. I was more intrested in why R’ Deutch, whom I had not heard referenced in years, was suddenly showing up at an Agudah sponsored asifah in Chicago for Yeshiva Bochurim. Perhaps he is now a regular speaker on some issues related to his “museum” but I just haven’t been following.

I did not intend for the OP to morph into a debate on the Rebbe, Z’L. I was more curious as to why a Lubavitch Rav would have been invited to speak at an Agudah gathering in Chicago which appears to have more focused on his expertise in matters related to historic artifacts and knowledge of animals referenced in the Torah than his lamdus in The Rebbe’s writings.

After reading some of the prior responses, I did some further checking myself into the Liozna chassidus….Apparently, not one of the faster growing segments of the chassideshe population in Brooklyn. There is apparently ONE shul called “Anshei Liozna” but doesn’t seem to have attracted a significant number of chabadniks to break away from 770.

As usual, CTLawyer makes a critical point. A college degree for the wife is in the interests of BOTH parties, especially if the guy is planning to shteig 24×7 for even a few years. More importantly, it is essential going forward for the wife so she never feels at risk of having to stay in a dysfunctional relationship solely for economic reasons. Hopefully, that will never be an issue but certainly it will be a net positive when the time comes to pay multiple yeshiva tuitions, summer camp expenses, etc.

If a “Yeshivish Guy” wants to sit in Kollel or learn, obviously he is expecting his wife to provide parnassah for the family (unless the couple has wealthy parents willing to pick up the tab). While there are some exceptions, having a college degree (and sometimes a graduate degree) is almost universally a prerequisite to professions paying a good salary. If the guy wants his wife to pay the bills, she needs a college degree.

Does someone “keep score” as to which rabbonim have completed the 24 (or whatever one believes the number is) of seforim that constitute “Kol Hatorah Kulah”? Would a big talmid chacham who for whatever reason had only completed 22 or 23 of those seforim not be worthy of reciting the baracha referenced by DaMoshe. One might think the decision would be based on a wholistic assessment of the lamdus and other attributes of a particular Rav versus some numerical score of how many seforim had been mastered.

A bunch of Litvish guys in Black Hats can run up and down 13th Avenue passionately waving yellow flags and singing yechi. Does that make them any less yearning for z’man moishiach than if they did so on Eastern Parkway??

Perhaps you miss the point. Litvish yidden have no less emunah or yearning for moishiach than Chabadniks. They just have a very different perspective on what the lawyers would say are the “conditions precedent” for z’man moishiach.

CS: There are companies which originally had “ties” to the Nazis that were sold decades ago to other entities in the U.S., EU countries, China and even EY. So it really depends on how you want to parse the ownership issue. One of the most widely referenced web sites listing corporations with direct Nazi ties or collaborations listed one of the three largest U.S. banks as selling Nazi war bonds, the 4th largest U.S. pharmaceutical company manufacturing drugs using Nazi slave labor and one of the most widely used providers of 401Ks to American businesses was a major German insurance company providing direct support to the Nazi war effort. There are still some direct 100% owned German companies that haven’t changed their upstream control since the Shoah but many have.

German investment banks and hedge funds hold material equity positions in many Fortune 500 companies and even some Israeli publicly traded companies (including one of the largest Israeli supermarket chains). In today’s global financial markets, its becoming very difficult to say which companies are “German” companies unless you mean 100% owned by a German domiciled entity with ties directly back to the Nazis Y’S.

There are multiple passport expeditors in most major metropolitan areas that will get you a new passport in 48-72 hours with proof of an overseas trip within the next 14 calendar days. (A copy of your airline tickets/travel itinerary is needed along with your old passport). The cost is typically in the range of $500-$700 which really isn’t that much since you will avoid having to stand in line for hours and they are very skilled at getting results.

After watching a few deep fake campaign ads for both ends of the political spectrum, its going to be almost impossible to know whats real in the coming election cycle. A story he shared regarding a time before his future father-in-law visited his father to speak about the proposed shidduch with his daughter, he saw his father remove from his bookcases every sefer that had his son’s name written inside. The Rav, Z’L explained that it was customary for visiting talmedei chachaim to browse through their host’s bookshelves, and he did not want to “impress” his visitor with anything that did not belong to him personally. Among his great contributions was to compile and reissue the sefarim of his grandfather, the Chasan Sofer to which he added some of his own thoughts.

For over 20 years, California used its more stringent state guidelines on auto emissions to push auto makers to make more efficient vehicles than they otherwise would have been required under EPA federal guidelines unde rboth Democratic and Republican administrations. Likewise, Red states are now trying to impose their own limits on out-of-state mail-order abortion drugs and found some obscure Federal Judge in Yenavelt Texas to issue an order restricting nationwide sales of that drug to impose their moral values on All. States’ right when it works our way but otherwise federal preemption .

in reply to: Supreme Court on California and pig-abuse #2190755

Reminder that it is Justice Gorsuch, the author of the opinion, who has consistently pushed back as to how the dormant commerce clause can be applied. Justice Gorsuch’s opinion holds that California’s law on pork sales is strictly kosher because it doesn’t intentionally discriminate economically against out-of-state businesses, unlike other state laws that the Court has struck down. Gorsuch along with conservative Justices Thomas and Barrett were true to their federalist beliefs and did not find any Constitutional basis for federal preemption of a state’s policy preferences on how food sold in that state should be produced. To rule otherwise, would grant the federal government powers to override state laws on virtually unlimited matters of varying import, something that seems to have escaped the Chief Justice.

Justice Kavanaugh puts it best: California “has attempted, in essence, to unilaterally impose its moral and policy preferences for pig farming and pork production on the rest of the Nation” and “propounded a ‘California knows best’ economic philosophy” that “undermines federalism and the authority of individual States.”

Justice Gorsuch writes that Congress, under its Commerce Clause authority, can pass a law that overrules state regulation like California’s. That’s a good message to send to Capitol Hill. But until that happy day, and especially in this polarized era, the majority opinion will embolden more states to impose their social policies on the commerce of other states.

The Court’s majority also offers no clear guidance to lower-court judges who will have to decide challenges to those state laws. Don’t be surprised if the policy preferences of judges replace the judge-made doctrine the Court has now thrown over the side.

“And then he sat there, in the church, listening to real goyishe blabber….

Yechiell: Well, we sit here respectfully listening to real yiddeshe blabber from you about a Rav you have obviously never met. You are entitled to your misinformed opinion about his actions (and those of prior chief rabbonim of the UK) who weighed the pros and cons of participating in key events in British history and decided on a case-by-case basis whether and hot to participate. Rav Mirvis concluded here that his presence was in the best interests of the kehilla he is responsible for and most yidden in the UK respect his decision. I wasn’t a big fan of Jared Kushner driving in a big limo to the inaugural on shabbos back in early 2016 but respected the “pikuach nefesh” rationalization underlying the dispensation for chilul shabbos ostensibly received from his Rav.
I frequently go back to the musar from Rav Yisreol Salanter who advised those who came to him seeking condemnation of the actions of others to focus on their own neshamah and leave the rest to the Ebeshter.

ZAfter the religious service has ended, the King will receive a greeting by Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Buddhist leaders.

The move reflects Charles’ deeply-held belief in promoting unity between different faiths through championing interfaith dialogue and celebrating the major religions practised in the UK.

“At the coronation he [R’ Mirvin] will be asked to swear oath to King Charles…

Zeturth: Again, NOT truthful. The so called “oath” will be elicited after the ceremony from millions attending the live ceremony, lining the nearby streets and watching on TV. Neither Rav Mirvin, hid predecessor R. Saks, Z’L nor any Chief Rabbi in modern times has ever “sworn’ an oath of allegiance to the monarch nor have they ever been in a situation where they were asked to.
Also, the participation of R’ Mirvin will be AFTER the religious portions of the coronation ceremony which will be limited to Bishops of the Anglican Church. Participants from other religious denominations will offer “greetings” in a separate portion of the ceremonies AFTER the religious segment. This will be the FIRST time there will be formal participation from reps from other religious groups which the palace has described as “an unprecedented gesture that will reflect the religious diversity of the Realms of King Charles III”. However, the “greeting” (which will be in a form of best wishes and good health for the new monarch and his family) from Rav Mirvis will NOT be audible for anyone watching on TV or outside Westminster Abbey because the Rav will be standing AWAY from the podium where the broadcast microphone is situated and unless he has a really loud voice, ONLY the royal party on the podium or in the first few rows will hear a word he says.
I understand that many feel he should not be there at all on Shabbos, but the Rav is an ehrliche yid who has done much for the tzibur living in the UK and believes his participation is both necessary and justified under HIS understanding of halacha.

Its clear you could build an eruv that appears to address ALL the technical objections to the kashruth of an eruv but some will always oppose as a matter of principle along the lines of Rav Moshe’s objections of “what it might lead to” and other “slippery slope” arguments. Those who hold by eruvim will take advantage of what it offers and others will simply continue to be machmir. Doesn’t seem like the objections could ever be satisfied by the physical attributes of the eruv per se.

If Trump becomes the 45th and 47th presidents of the US, how many US presidents will be colossal jerks, 1 or 2?

In fairness, there were other Presidents who might be deemed “colossal jerks”. A recent survey of journal articles by the American Historical Society found that Warren Harding, Ulysses Grant, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Zachary Taylor and Andrew Johnson were the overwhelming choice of historians as the “worst presidents in American history. Having said that, one can challenge the notion that being among the “worst presidents” is synonymous with being a “colossal jerk”. Clearly, the Trumpkopf would satisfy both criteria although there are some who were failures at leadership but not necessarily jerks.u
