I didn’t read through all the comments, but I have seen some that are of the opinion that while Yiddish may not be holy per se, it is THE authentic Jewish langauge, and those whho speak it are in some way holier than those who do not. This is rather insulting. Yiddish is basicly Old German mixed with some Hebrew and Slavic languages, and was spoken in Eastern Europe. My family is from Western Europe. None of my grandparents or great-gradparents spoke Yiddish. Most of them were deeply religous.

There is an unfortunate tendency in America today to equate traditional Jewish practices with traditional Eastern European practices. The world is bigger than Poland and Lithuania.

This discussion seems to hinge on “What makes music Jewish?” Is it that someone frum composed it? Or is it that the Lyrics have Jewish themes?

Jewish music today comes in three basic styles: Opera (Chazzanus), Eastern European folk music (“Traditional”) and American Pop (Simcha/popular)

Then there are all the childrens’ albums that put Jewish lyrics to classic childrens’ songs.
