Definately don’t bring shampoo and conditioner and soap for the year. I brought one of each at the begining and used it until i got some isrealy stuff. then i used my american stuff before yomim tovim and whenever i was in the mood. i even had leftover by the end!
I would bring pens and pencils becuase they seem to cost a fortune there-like four shekel a pen – that like a dollar! i would just bring from home but everything else for school you can really buy there.
make sure to find out about if you school has a tiyul dress code so you can try to bring the right clothing. of course you can always wear your uniform but its nice to be able to wear something else if the school lets.
other people said this already but bring deoterant. also sunscreen and batteries i was told were really expensive there. i don’t know why. i brought enough for the whole year so i really never got to find out if it really was more expensive or not.
i wore the same outfits or two every week….also, leave some stuff at home just in case your suitcase get lost on the way back-i know someone it happened to but she had no clothing for two weeks cuz she brought it all to Isreal with her. leave stuff at home….
also, find out if you know people coming over the year for sukkos, chanuka….then you can ask your parents to send stuff with them-like a little bit at a time so its not too muhc for one person then you can get the stuff you have to leave behind….
have a safe flight and a great year!!!
funny613MemberWhy does he have to apologize? I think we should all take it more as mussar-not to be so quick to be willing to hear Loshon Hara! That was his point! That many times we are way too quick to hear and read Loshon Hara – when it is not spelled out that way! Why are we attacking him? For making a point that we can take mussar from?
And to anyone who is saying that the problem is that it is giving the Satan ‘evidence’-look around the coffee room, newspapers, community…. – how much of this gives the Satan what to say? Also, if we do something with it, it should do some good and not only bad!
Thank you popa_bar_abba for making this thread!
funny613MemberYou have the definitoin of chukas hagoyim wrong-its not doing what the goyim do! cuz then we wouldn’t be allowed to breathe and chew normaly because that is also how the goyim do it! From what I remember, chukas hagoyim is doing something that the goyim attribute to avodah zarah-im not 100% sure on that, I have to go check.
Why are we talking about chukas hagoyim though-i thought we were talking about shorts being tznius or not?
funny613MemberI don’t think it is always $90 for a 3rd piece of luggage. When on a group flight to seminary, a lot of times the travel agent works out a deal where it is $90 but normaly i think is over $200.
funny613MemberFind out if and what the tiyul dress code is so you can bring clothing to wear on tiyulim.
funny613Memberfarfrumt-2 things. first of all, that depend on where in Yerushalayim the seminary is. second, it depends on whether or not one has a regular bus card or a childrens one.
refael613 made it sound like it was normal to take taxi’s to the kosel and I don’t think it is.
Also, how do you plan on fitting more than 4 girls in a taxi? The bigger the taxi the more expensive…
funny613MemberIts just a reminder-i wasn’t suggesting that you have the shabbos meal sitting on the floor. Also, we talk about rebuilding the Bais Hamikdash on shabbos in bentching and Shemona Esrei so we need to lead up to that.
funny613Memberrefael613: “taxi’s to the kosel”-Why? What is wrong with the bus?
And, the seminaries do tell the girls but are you really expecting that every girl is mature enough to accept that and follow it?
funny613Memberno blinky becasue the eggs are crushed up not whole. if they were whole yes, it would be for that reason if you have the right kavanos
funny613Memberramateshkolian, i see what you are saying but 1)its nice to be able to say where you go an idea from and be able to prove it 2) what emoticon613 said about being able to get a grasp for amailus batorah and 3)This way when you have 20 min and pesach is around the corner, you can pick up a sefer and understand it. you want to be able to learn someting on your own and furthermore be able to help your children with it also.
funny613MemberWe have round matzo balls to remind us that we are in availus for the chorbon so we have a reminder every week while we are enjoying our shabbos seuda.

funny613Member— Like WellInformedYid said write down what you want to accomplish. You need the reminder once in a while.
—Write down things that happened that inspire you, nice ideas…i have a friend who say in class and a had a seporate notebook where she wrote down different quotes the teacher’s said in class that struck her-i thought it was a really good idea! Also, when you are at people’s houses (Shabbos, Chessed…) and you see something you like-write it down!
— If you eat something at someone’s house that you like, ask for the recipe and have a special notebook for it. By the end of the year you will have a whole cookbook!
— just to repeat what hashemsprincess wrote: Go to the Kosel! Everyone says to, and you think you will but unless you make it a set thing to go a certain day, it wont happen. And, don’t compromise on that day-stick to it even if you have a test the next day or a report due-try not to compromise on it. By the end of the year you feel really good about doing it.
—Someone told me this before I went: Throughout the year and at the begining of the year epecially, many schools go to different kvarim. Keep your spot in Tehillim so you can start where you left off. (I also used that when I went to the Kosel, just stam wanted to say tehillim….)It makes it much more meaningful when you aren’t just saying Tehillim but you are going to finish a few times over.
—DONT SLEEP IN CLASS!!! For some reason in seminary it becomes accepted to sleep in class-i don’t know why because in HS its totally unheard of but in seminary everyone seems to think its ok and its NOT. Its a tremendous lack in Derech Eretz and you are loosing so much you can gain and is that why you worked so hard and came to EY??? If you make that a priority not to sleep and put your head down in class, then youll really feel good at the end to know that you didn’t do what so many others did. (hopefully you wont have that problem in seminary but in case you do….)
—Bring a recorder and use it a lot! ask the teacher’s first to make sure but usually they dont mind-those recordings are pricless afterwards!
—Ask questions! This is very likely the end of your Limudei Kodesh education-take it all in! (Also, when else do you have a year of only Torah and Limudei Kodesh?)
—By the Yomim Tovim-take it all in. In EY, Shabbos and Yom Tov are so different than in America.
Hatzlacha Rabah!!!!
funny613MemberI wouldn’t sit and talk so much on the phone but really, just making shabbos plans and llving day to day life – needing to be in touch and arrange stuff with people, you use minutes.
Also, when looking at your daughter’s bill (especially for people who do minute by minute), remember that you start off with a whole bunch of fees to begin with-the cell rental, the emergency txt thing, etc. -the bill is starting off with around $15 at best and then she uses minutes-what do you expect it to be? Don’t expect it to be an unreasonable amout on the bill.
My guess is at least 300 or 400 minutes. Just MHO.
funny613MemberWhat do you call a dead mouse?
A Mayseh Shehoyah!
What do you call a grandma mouse?
A Bubbe Mayseh!
funny613MemberSomeone told me taht her fifth grade sister’s class tried to do Purim shtick that failed but in a hilarius way!
The girls decided to each bring in an onion and a few knives and then right before class, they would cut open the onions and they would all start crying. Then, when the teacher asked why they were crying, they would show her the onions and they would all laugh! Cute.
They did it and the teacher walked in and they very qucikly found out the teacher was allergic to onions (when was the last time you met someone allergic to onoins) so now the teacher couldn’t teach them! Worse, was that the entire fifth grade hallway (5 parallel classes) smelled like onions so they whole grade was crying along with their teachers!
The principal came in to speak to them, yet when he realized that it wasn’t meant to be such trouble, he didn’t get them into such big trouble!
