Love (Definition 2) your response to funnybone.I love almost every type of pizza, but I’m wary of undercooked slices. However, I don’t HATE any pizza, even if I don’t love it, and even if it disagrees with me (a.k.a. my stomach).

I disagree. He said that proportionally, it is equally as applicable to a population with a smaller growth rate. I do not agree with that statement. If one were to convince me that growth rate + age gap causes a shidduch crisis, I would contend there is a certain percentage of growth rate, which would lead to a certain percentage of women remaining single, that one might define as the cutoff between “not a crisis” and “crisis.” So Joseph’s conclusion that the MO community also has a growth rate + age gap based crisis, even if it has a smaller growth rate, is not sound. The actual growth rate is an essential determinant in that equation.

I am not agreeing/arguing with any of your other points, but mathematically, this bothered me. Assuming the “crisis” is attributable to growth rate alone, proportionality among communities would only hold if growth rates are the same. Population size does not affect proportionality, but growth rate does.
As a simplified example, if Community A has a 2%/year growth rate and an average marriage gap of 3 years, the pool of single women would be about 6.1% larger than the pool of single men (1.02^3 – 1). From the other perspective, that makes the population of single men about 5.8% smaller than the population of single men (1 – 1/(6.1%)), meaning that every 100 single women in Community A have about 94 single men to match with.
If Community B has 8%/year growth rate and an average marriage gap of 3 years, the population of single women would be about 26% larger than the population of single men, so the population of men would be about 20.6% of the population of women. Every 100 single women in Community B would have only 79 men to match with them.
Again, I do not have enough evidence to say anything about the either the actual cause of the “crisis” or actual growth rates within any one community (I can’t imagine many communities in the world grow by 8%/year), but the size of the growth rate within a community very much affects the relative impact on each individual single woman, as demonstrated above.

The only difference I could see there being between your case and putting it there with treif food the rest of the year is that more food items contain chometz than they do treif, and chometz is more likely to get all over. Just contain your food and you’re fine. I’m in the same situation and put my food in a tied plastic bag.

Spring, that was right on the money.
I’m going to Passover that hotel this year. I already seder last year, and haggadah try something new. I’m leaning towards staying home instead of choosing to sell-a-bread and enjoy Pesach elsewhere. I’m not bitter that it will be marror work. Please dip-end on us for a meal, but don’t plague me too much or there will be ‘ten’sion. My children simply don’t know good and evil; keeping them free from trouble is like splitting the sea.

Are you suggesting that unsuccessful marriages occur because the partners knew too MUCH about each other going in, and had they only decided to marry each other earlier in the dating process, they would have much more successful marriages??
Although there may be a correlation between longer dating periods and divorce rate, I find it hard to believe that it is for the reason you have stated. The only conclusion one can make based on such a statistic (if it exists) is that people who date for a longer time are more WILLING to divorce. It doesn’t even prove that people who date for a shorter time have more successful marriages or are happier together – there are plenty of couples who are unhappy together but don’t divorce.

But using the “animal, vegetable, mineral” question as a starting point may have originated with the electronic version (thanks for the correction about what kind of game it is); I would imagine (but it doesn’t have to be so) that it is meant to be all-inclusive of any physical item, i.e. that every item is one of animal, vegetable, or mineral. So dotnetter, that would make a leather boot animal, anything metal, wood, or even plastic would be mineral, barley soup would be vegetable, etc. – hey, waiter! I ordered barley, not vegetable!

dotnetter – If what other people are saying is true, that the first question in the (card?) game is animal, vegetable, or mineral, then I would venture to say that the question is referring to the source of the materials, in which case all the things you mentioned WOULD be minerals.

You are absolutely correct, but you weren’t just being ‘sensitive about it’. If you’re prepared to say that someone asked a “horrible question”, you should be prepared to back that up (and imho you shouldn’t ever say something like that).
I am sincerely sorry that you have been in that position. Please be aware that because of this, you may be more likely to say something that you don’t necessarily mean. Btw, when I posted, your apology had not been approved yet; had I seen it, I would not have posted.
justwant, you’re way overreacting and being quite oversensitive. If you’d take a second to think about what you’re reading, you’d realize that sbeph is not asking whether yeshivish people give condolences to the bereaved or not. He is asking if they use the actual word “Condolences” as the line to comfort the bereaved. It would have been more clear had he used quotation marks, but that is obviously what he meant.
(Now that I think about it, your misreading probably stems from the fact that it is a yeshivish thing to say “say a dvar torah” or “saying good”. In English you use the word “say” when mentioning the actual words being said. I don’t mean to imply there’s anything wrong with having a yeshivish dialect, merely that it is good to know what phraseology stems from that dialect but is not universal.)

If you had been referring to a set of clothing, e.g. “work attire”, that would contain pants.

Did you have to get one of the higher-ups? In order to get to my page I have to click on my user name at the top of the screen; if I click on the name beside one of my posts it says “can’t find user”. I think it may have to do with the fact that there are spaces in my name…if you go to the url (after trying to access my page) and insert dashes where the spaces in my name are I think it may work. (The incorrect url places “%20” where the spaces should be; if you replace the “%20” with a dash it goes to the correct page)

BaalHabooze – not sure of the source, but my family does it (we don’t eat it, but we don’t take it off the table, though). Eating it is supposed to be bad for memory. So probably both a minhag and a mishigass; but since its my family’s minhag, we do it.
