If I recall rabbonim have called for NO minyanim anywhere. It seems to create these outdoor minyanim is going against daas Torah unless a rav gives haskamah to it.
flatbusherParticipantOf course, we all prefer davening b’tzibbur. And under normal circumstances, a person davening at home by choice my guess probably would not result in a better davening. It’s just the situation, where some people are not rushing to work, or may be working but don’t have the commute, that allows for a more relaxed time to daven. The bigger challenge is minchah and maariv, which unless I set a distinct time–and remember it–there is a danger I may miss it. Davening at home on Shabbos was particularly depressing, but I still read the parsha with the haftarah.
January 5, 2020 2:53 pm at 2:53 pm in reply to: Siyum Hashas: The Daf Yomi Cycle didn’t End on 1/1 #1819113flatbusherParticipantI asked that question weeks ago and got the answer about availability. It took away from the event that it wasn’t really a siyum for everyone, though people did make a seudas mitzvah on Shabbos for the REAL siyum. While I can understand the logistics involved, and why they settled on Jan. 1, since when do yidden do things out of convenience? And how much rushing of the end of niddah had to be done to make the Hadaran? It couldn’t have been real Daf Yomi, could it?
November 25, 2019 10:12 am at 10:12 am in reply to: Should frum yidden remove all plants from the home during the month of december? #1803960flatbusherParticipantAssuming the poster is serious (I hope not), why would it be ma’aris ayin? Goyim decorate a tree or hang a wreat or mistletoe..how does that translate to regular plants sitting in your house all year round?
flatbusherParticipant“Logical marriage” makes it sound like a business deal, which unfortunately sometimes it seems that way. Given our way of dating and marriage, there really isn’t that much time to develop a loving relationship, and indeed we do see that love is a factor (Yitzchak loved Rivka, for example in Parshas Chaya Sarah). But there has to be some feelings. Obviously, arranged marriages don’t put a lot of stock in that aspect, and I think that for the most part, people figure they’ll make do. And then others don’t.
November 8, 2019 3:01 pm at 3:01 pm in reply to: How much $$$ does a typical Frum family spend on groceries per week? #1798655flatbusherParticipantA lot depends on what your family eats and how much. My family of 4 spends less but then again we are not big eaters and stay away from high priced items until they go on sale. Some people don’t care about price and just buy what they want and some families have growing kids with big appetites.
September 27, 2019 4:46 pm at 4:46 pm in reply to: Your 21 year old son may be ready for marriage #1790213flatbusherParticipantFunny how the frum world considers boys 21 to be ready. In the real world, ready means ready to support a wife and then a family. Being responsible is part of being mature. Being supported by someone else does not necessarily mean such a person is ready. Ready for marriage? Seems more like a boy at 21 just moves from his mother taking care of him to a wife while he sits in yeshiva. When I was 21 I probably could have gotten married if that’s what being ready means. Girls are so eager–or desperate–they are just happy to be married regardless if the guy is mature, able and willing to support, or handle issues that come up in a marriage
flatbusherParticipantThere is a small mikvah on E. 10th off of I in basement of shul that is often pretty empty, depending when you go. I used to go to “private mikvah” on E.15 and J but got tired of the long waits and the price for the privilege of privacy. I don’t even know if it is still an option.
flatbusherParticipantI have read that the effectiveness of the flu shot wear down over time so I don’t see the point in getting it so far ahead of flu season.
July 21, 2019 1:36 pm at 1:36 pm in reply to: What are any issues with serving a role in Conservative Shule? #1762192flatbusherParticipantI would love to know what conservative shuls have an orthodox minyan as part of its membership–I don’t mean a minyan that rents out space. Maybe 50 years ago there were a number of Orthodox rabbis in Conservative shuls, but how can an Orthodox rabbi serve in a shul where women are counted to a minyan and given aliyos, or the chazzan is a woman, not to mention greater acceptance of intermarriage?
February 9, 2017 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm in reply to: Jewish Music Sometimes Rubs Me the Wrong Way #1216788flatbusherParticipantShopping613: I’m glad it works for you, but it may be a generational thing. As an older person who spent 11 months saying kaddish for each of my parents, I relate to Kaddish in a different way, and maybe others who have to recite Kaddish can appreciate what I am saying or why I react as such. But I have a similar reaction to what I regard as sacred text being what I feel is trivialized with music that obviously has been influenced by non-holy origins.
February 6, 2017 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm in reply to: Jewish Music Sometimes Rubs Me the Wrong Way #1216772flatbusherParticipantcatch yourself: I agree with you on that. I am surprised though that no one in Torah leadership seems to comment on this
flatbusherParticipantThe question really is that when the talis was designed, was slippage a problem or was clothing so coarse that the talis clung to the garment. No one seems immuned from slippage, even Rabbonim, and yet I don’t see the no-slip talis as being the solution as it doesn’t seem to be foolproof.
Lilmod: it’s not complicated but truly being a frum male is pretty demanding on various levels beside the talis
flatbusherParticipantMeno: Maybe you are one of the lucky ones or you have very broad shoulders
flatbusherParticipantGetting back to the point of the original post…I have a non-slip and my talis still slips. Not sure what they do that makes the manufacturer believe that the talis wont slide off, but it does. I think the the nature of the material on which you wear the talis may make a difference, but my talis slips regardless.
flatbusherParticipantThe Democrats and the media are really blowing this way out of proportion. Obama and Carter took similar actions and in November 2015 Chuck Schumer said an immigration pause may be necessary. So the outrage now is merely political to give Trump trouble. Meanwhile, nearly half the country (49%) by a Reuters polls agree with the move.
flatbusherParticipantQuote from Marcy Syms:
“This has been a challenging time for Syms and Filene’s Basement,” said Marcy Syms, CEO of Syms Corp, in a prepared statement. “We have been faced with increased competition from large department stores that now offer the same brands as our stores at similar discounts.”
flatbusherParticipantTry Jos. A Banks web site and then visit a store. When they have sales, the prices are good and the online catalog is pretty extensive. I was a SYMS fan and I still wear a couple of the suits from then. I guess they paid the ultimate price for offering such good deals.
flatbusherParticipantSo then Hashem did not create that produce for Bnai Yisroel to consume. If not, why not?
flatbusherParticipantBut there was a time when there were no pesticides, so were people careful not to eat things we consider infested?
flatbusherParticipantConstantly changes? SO tell me which produce that once was infested is now OK to eat? Seems like a one-way street.
flatbusherParticipantI personally favor that but it goes against the norms of the frum community. I wish I can recall when the shidduch process changed to the way it is now that the parents basically decide whom you should date, with or without your input.
January 13, 2017 2:11 pm at 2:11 pm in reply to: The #1 tragedy facing the Frum world in America is: #1209512flatbusherParticipantThe communities I lived in were a midbar, but even the ones I have visited do not appeal to me. CTlawyer, you choose to focus on the negatives, I choose to focus on all the positive living in a large community have to offer that have NOTHING to do with gashmius. I don’t eat out or attend the various entertainments, but I love having a block full of frum neighbors, seeing a lot of frum people in the street, having minyanim almost anytime day or night if I happen to need it and a multitude of shiurim, schools, etc.
January 12, 2017 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm in reply to: Has photography become too much of an obsession by simchas? #1208890flatbusherParticipantCT Lawyer wrote: For example, the centerpieces on the tables were supposed to have equal numbers of red and white roses (equal to the total number of seats at each table). DIL found the florist simply placed centerpieces with 8 roses on each table. This was not as contracted and the florist had to return to his shop and come back with the correct additional flowers and fix the centerpieces before guests arrived. She also noticed that the caterer did not have the specific brand of Canadian Whiskey we ordered at the bars. The caterer was reminded of the contract obligation and sent to the warehouse for the correct items.
These were important enough items to be noted in contracts, but not important enough for Mrs. CTL or new in-law to deal with during a chasanah..that’s why we designated a wedding coordinator.
May I ask why these issues were important? I understand they may be what you wanted but in the scheme of things, how important are they and for whom? You think the guests care?
January 11, 2017 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm in reply to: The #1 tragedy facing the Frum world in America is: #1209494flatbusherParticipantI have lived in small Jewish communities and have lived in Brooklyn most of life, and nothing compares with what a large frum community offers. Living in a small frum community is like living in the midbar.
January 11, 2017 2:10 pm at 2:10 pm in reply to: Has photography become too much of an obsession by simchas? #1208868flatbusherParticipantMaybe you’re going to the wrong weddings. I do not recall any family simcha where pictures took two hours. I am not a professional photographer but I do take pictures at weddings and the baalei simcha always appreciate them. It’s a historical record of a major life event and reminiscing about a time when there were no pictures is like those who are nostaligic for a time before electricity or the telephone.
flatbusherParticipantSam2: white supremacists may have supported Trump, but that doesn’t make everyone who supported him tamei. Same with KKK, which is a very small group these days. All it proves is that Trump attracted people from all stripes of the political spectrum. So what else is new? It’s happened before. What CTLawyer was doing was coloring Trump supporters with the same brush, and that is what Dems do all the time. I guess living in a liberal state like Connecticut does that even to frum people.
flatbusherParticipantIt seems that whatever Obama has done in the past was to curry favor with Jewish voters, and now he doesn’t have to. So I don’t believe praising an action with ulterior motives is called for. I think he has made it clear in the past that he has no love for Israel or the Jews
flatbusherParticipantScares me when frum people actually defend Obama.
flatbusherParticipantCT lawyer: This is what you said: But there is no way I’d align with the current Republican bigots/hypocrites/Jew Hating, white male supremacists. This is what the Dems claimed through the campaign.
Now, show me about the bigots and white male supremeacists. Dems also have unsavory followers but is the head of the Dem party and the ones who urged him to veto, well may be they have constituents they care about, but if they were so pro Israel how could they support Hillary or Sanders?
For the record, I am a registered Democrat and I did not vote for president this election. But I would trust Ted Cruz demand to defund UN more than any Dem who claims to support Israel.
flatbusherParticipantCT Lawyer: sounds like you are just repeating what Dems have been telling you, and that surprises me. Further, it’s not just the action of one person. Hillary would have been the same and the fact that Sanders nearly got the nomination should be of concern. But of course, if you have socialist leanings, I guess it makes sense
flatbusherParticipantJust proves Jews are their worst enemies. And to think Hillary probably would have continued the same policy.
flatbusherParticipantI don’t know why all the dreaming. I have been in shuls that meet the criteria stated by some of the posters.
flatbusherParticipantI dont have the patience to read through all the previous posts but will make the obvious point anyway: couples are getting married too quickly, barely knowing the people they marry. Scary thought that a couple dates 4,5,6 times and make a lifelong decision. How many stories have there been of a couple who knew on the wedding night that they made a mistake? Such pressure to get married, fear if they don’t accept a proposal they won’t get another chance, and the prevalence of divorces making it more acceptable all contribute.
December 4, 2016 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm in reply to: Who was the worst President of your lifetime? #1197181flatbusherParticipantObama and Carter will have to battle for title of the worst, but I think Obama has the edge
flatbusherParticipantFrom the sound of audience in the video clip, it didn’t sound like a lot of GOP members there. The show is booked already months in advance, so it is not likely anything that happened at the show will affect its bottom line.
November 21, 2016 10:37 pm at 10:37 pm in reply to: What do you do when everybody around you is getting married? #1194854flatbusherParticipantTake a deep breath and relax. You’re only 20. Not everyone gets married so young, and if you are anxious, it may come out in your dates or worse you may end up marrying someone who may not be appropriate. All in the right time with the right one. Just relax.
flatbusherParticipantUbi: Not sure what you’re saying. The musical is not meant to be a political statement but the cast memmbers and I guess casting director are making one.
flatbusherParticipantNot really a political statement, but a historical musical. Good chance none of the actors know anything about the real Hamilton. He was very much against immigration, favored having a king, and other things they do not align with their current political views. Also interesting to note that as much as the actor pointed to the diversity in the cast, earlier this year when casting for a touring company of the show, they were specifically were looking for non-whites, which is discriminatory.
flatbusherParticipantThe cast of Hamilton had a right to say what they did, but it was inappropriate to single out a member of the audience and to use the stage as a platform for a political statement, especially one that expressed unfounded fears. Trump had a right to respond. And you can be sure that sine Trump is a white male, it will be open season on him for anything and everything.
flatbusherParticipantIt is obvious that regardless of anyone’s predictions, it really didn’t look like Trump was going to win. I am not alone in believing that Yad Hashem was evident, and we do not understand why, so all those Hillary fans, do you not believe Hashem runs the world and deemed the outcome of this election?
flatbusherParticipantHealth: Why are you asking this? If you feel he did good, please tell us.
flatbusherParticipantIf the game does not involve things that are assur, who is to say what is oneg Shabbos for someone? One poster says SHabbos is for studying Torah not games, but there is a concept of oneg–is it subjective or not?
flatbusherParticipantUbi: Trump’s win shows bullies get ahead? The election showed that he appealed to issues that were bothering them, namely that the mainstream parties ignore the people who vote for them. People like Trump because they feel he says what needs to be said without fear as opposed to standard politicians who couch their comments in gibberish just so it doesn’t sound like they are taking a position. Trump may be a bully but I don’t believe people elected him because of that. And I know the difference between liberal and conservative. As for Hillary’s tactics? Lies, lies and more lies about anything and everything that would ingratiate her to the electorate. She went so far as to accuse the family of Benghazi victims lying about what she told them when their loved ones bodies returned. She put forth programs claiming they won’t cost an additional dime, which was laughable to even a common ear. She tried to win votes by castigating Trump supporters. Want more on her tactics?
flatbusherParticipantLots of luck with that. If marriage adjustments aren’t difficult enough, why add this to the mix. Wait until the person has fully recovered and then wait another year and see if it holds.
November 13, 2016 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm in reply to: When we do have a female president one day #1191662flatbusherParticipantJoseph: Just when I was thinking that what normal person would actually not vote for Hillary because she is a womwn, you make your comment. Indeed there were women in Jewish history who were leaders.
flatbusherParticipantANd automatically you credit the liberals? That’s a joke. For time immemorial liberals do their best to demonize Republicans or anyone who doesn’t share their ideology. Little was mentioned that Hillary Clinton admired Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, which aimed to eliminate blacks through abortion, or that her mentor was Sen. Robert Byrd, who was a big shot in the KKK, or she is a disciple of Saul Alinsky. with his destructive plans for the U.S.
As far as tactics, what was so pure about Hillary’s tactics?
flatbusherParticipant“But under Dems, society has been sinking in morality and maybe this will slow it.”
In some ways, but as I have explained there are other ways morality has increased under dems. For example minority rights including our rights. If you are able to take off Shabbos without fear of being fired that is thanks to liberals. Granted you may not like all liberal positions, I dont either. But to lump together all “sinking in morality” as occuring under dems isnt quite accurate
Show me. I don’t know where you got that from. It was republicans who passed the Civil Rights act in 1964, not the Dems. Dems like to rewrite their history. I think there is enough indication that U.S. society has deteriorated with rampant abortion, drug use, illegal aliens getting treated better than veterans, lax enforcement of laws, and on and on.
flatbusherParticipant147: I listen to a few of those talk shows. No, they did not predict a win at all. They were cautious in that. So I don’t know whom you are talking about but even Sean Hannity, trumps’s staunchest trumpeter, did not predict victory. Please cite whom you heard predict the victory.
flatbusherParticipantI don’t think Trump’s rants are any worse than some of the things both Obama and Hillary have said, so relax. Yes, it is in Hashem’s hands and it truly is a miracle that he won, so Hashem obviously has a plan that we don’t understand. But under Dems, society has been sinking in morality and maybe this will slow it.
