TLIK: It isn’t ???? since the parties effectively agreed to allow that condition beforehand. And there is nothing wrong with contractually agreeing to that condition. It would be no different than if you and I contractually agreed that if the Yankees win the world series your wristwatch becomes mine. Then my taking your wristwatch after the Yankees win is not ????.

A second and additional point allowing it is that the teacher is essentially saying “if you wish us to continue allowing you to be a student of this school, the cost is for you to surrender that cell phone”. The student can choose to not pay the price of surrendering the cell phone, keep it, and leave the school. It is the schools legal, moral and disciplinary right to enforce that condition.

The main resource that is needed is cash. But other things are needed as well. For example: (unused) appliances, especially washers and dryers; boilers; hot water heaters and the like – anything of value that is usually kept in the basement is in short supply. Another example: If anyone can donate (unused) Seforim – items like a Shas, Rambam, Mishnayos, etc. – Seforim that are expensive to replace, and in good condition.

The damage people have sustained is devastating. Besides uninhabitable homes, untold damage to property, cars destroyed etc, people’s personal losses are heartrending. Women lost their jewelry collections, family photographs and memorabilia, and of course, and dozens of personal Seforim libraries totally wiped out.

You need to be a “macher” to join. They don’t strictly accept based on qualifications. You need to have connections. (Like you said.)

“I do not know what is going on in BP or the exact legality of parking at a no parking when not on call.”

How do you deal with this issue for yourself, when not on call, as far as parking in a No Parking area?

“However in our organization I know of at least one incident in which a member has had his placard taken away because he used it to park each day at a water hydrant. He was warned that parking there is at his own risk and if he wants to park there he should remove the placard from the window since it puts the organization in a bad light.”

Why is the discipline limited to illegally parking by a fire hydrant? Why isn’t the same discipline metered out when someone parks in a No Parking area, when not on call? (There appears to be a lot of that occurring.)

“Just this Friday as I went shopping, I saw a fire chief parking his car at a No Parking and went shopping. I would never really notice something like that, however it seems that other Emergency responders take advantage of the fact that they will not get ticketed. (and in one way free up another legal parking spot).”

Two wrongs don’t make a right. They’re doing wrong doesn’t legitimize it being done here.

“I feel that it is very worth joining Hatzalah just for all the parking priviliges (parking in NYC is a nightmare without the parking privilige placard) and driving privileges (gridlock is a big pain). Of course the main thing is the mitzvah.”

    Seriously?

They probably received an overwhelming response (not just in your city but in all the places they collected from) and they already had an overabundance of clothing and material. So they obviously decided if they have so much brand new stuff already, it is better to help our fellow Yidden in desperate need with only the brand new stuff since they had so much of it to fulfill all their needs with brand new material.

ZeesKite: That would apply to two witnesses, but no warning. But only one witness wouldn’t be allowed to tell beis din, correct?

What is the concept I am referring to where a witness isn’t allowed to bring it to beis din if there’s only one (or the eidus is in some way deficient)?

I seem to recall learning that due to loshon hora eidim are not allowed to come to Beis Din with evidence if their testimony is insufficient to convict. For example, if one witness saw a crime when two is required. Perhaps this is also true if there was no warning beforehand?

The problem is that the Republicans have a long history of nominating centrists rather than conservatives. Romney, McCain, Dole, Bush I, etc. The last true conservative was Reagan. And before Reagan it was way back with Goldwater, in 1964. Even Bush II wasn’t really conservative, especially on economic issues.

There is nothing to theorize about. And your supposition is incorrect. New Jersey’s oil refineries are in Central Jersey, not near the water. They weren’t damaged too badly during the storm. OTOH, New York’s oil storage facilities in Brooklyn and Queens are on the coast, right by the water. And they were severely damaged. While New Jersey’s facilities are up and running at near full capacity, New York’s are still severely crippled.

In summary, this is not a governmental issue. It is a matter for private industry to correct and fix. And they are working hard to get it back in order. All the posturing by the NY politicos are simply self-serving arrogance. They have almost no control over how fast this issue will be resolved.

Most people here are assuming one of two things (or a combination thereof):

    1) The parents are to blame for the child going off the derech

    or

    2) The school is responsible for the child going off the derech

Obviously, there are many variables and it differs from person to person. Nevertheless, between those two possibilities, I would venture to say that the parents tend to bear more responsibility for the problem than the school. The parents are responsible for their child 24/7. The parents are in charge and with their child more hours per year than the school.

That being said, what everyone seems to be missing is who is truly the most responsible for the person going off the derech. And that, of course, is the person himself who went OTD. Yes, he is most responsible for his bad actions. Yes, he is the one who will face the direst consequences for his terrible decisions. He will face consequences down here; and, most importantly, he will face the music upstairs.

Romney was never the conservatives choice. The conservatives supported others such as Santorum, Perry, etc. Romney won due to a split conservative vote in the primaries.

It’s not always an aveira to hug or kiss a niece.

If she’s two years old, it isn’t an aveira whether she is your niece or second cousin once removed (both have the same status to you.)

That doesn’t make doing an aveira okay.

And from a halachic standpoint, a neice is more similar to a neighbor and a second cousin once removed than to an adopted daughter.

TLIK: The fact is that numerous tzadikim have given very specific reasons for tragedies, including the holocaust. The Gemorah often does the same. You say that only someone who possesses Ruach Hakodesh can do so. And very likely these tzadikim do posses that. But you then go on to say, contradicting that previous point, that mere mortals cannot make such cheshbonos. Yet these great tzadikim I refer to, while they posses Ruach Hakodesh, are indeed mere mortals! Perhaps you are speaking metaphorically in differentiating between those with R”HK and other “mere” mortals.

TLIK: How are you differentiating “generalities” from “specifics”? Please provide an example of each.

When a godol hador states that such-and-such tragedy is a result of such-and-such aveira, is the godol speaking in generalities or in specifics?

What’s that have to do whether to tax or not? The special taxes are ostensibly to pay for the public’s health cost (Medicare, Medicaid) for his unhealthy activity and also as a disincentive to engaging in the unhealthy habit in the first place.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, over 2/3 of divorces are filed by women. It became even higher (over 70% ) after no-fault was introduced. And the women initiation rate is lower in States that by law award joint custody of children, as opposed to awarding primary custody to the mother by default. Among college educated women it is 90%!

sam responsible seems to make a good point. I would attribute it to the failed expectations brought by feminism not living up to reality.
