Shopping613- Thanks for your kind words:). About staying for a while… We just had a Yom Kippur, and the best way of starting a fresh and clean year (in my yetzer tov’s opinion) is not for me to be in a coffee room where any random stranger could post his/her opinions which can seem like da’as Torah when it’s often not, and to be online more often than absolutely necessary, as per the psak of our gedolim (I don’t want anyone countering that, please!). But for the moment, as I think about what will work for me in terms of staying pure this year, I decided that if I need to give in to a taavah online, let it be by following these threads and not by opening unholy sites. I realize that since I am long out of the school system, my intellectual and spiritual vacuum needs to be filled or my physical inclinations will dominate- which leads very quickly to an unraveling of a person’s whole value system and to emptiness. Take advantage of high school, seminary, and learning. I miss it sooo much! There’s no other time in your life of constant growth in an incubated enviroment like that.

Ivory- you could say that again! Oh how I wish I was 99% pure too!!!

“Without knowledge of the meaning of a term, knowing that someone is doing it is meaningless as well.”

I knew the meaning of the term without knowing the actual word.

But what’s wrong with feeding the trolls if they’re hungry?:) Oh I get it. You like the real thing.

in reply to: How are you preparing for Yom Kippur? #1034169

Thanks, I’ll try to get ahold of one.

in reply to: Suggest subtitles for others (okay, and yourself…) #1152495

Cozimjewish, don’t underestimate yourself. And yeh, I hope they do too. sigh. So far it seems like they might not. But we’ll leave that for the next thread.

in reply to: Suggest subtitles for others (okay, and yourself…) #1152494

Yay! That’s nice of you, Mods. Just take out that lingering ‘, unless it’s the pintele yid. I still wanted other ideas though also. Do you like my subtitle, -29? Does it shtim? Where are you, Randomex? If you’re cheshbon hanefeshing in preparation of Yom Kippur, I’m very inspired.

in reply to: Suggest subtitles for others (okay, and yourself…) #1152490

CIJ- is that a positive thing or not? Were you hoping that there were deep and sensitive boys in the world?

in reply to: Suggest subtitles for others (okay, and yourself…) #1152489

    ummm……

    Randomex, what do you say?

How about ‘harping on harmonic and beautiful undertones’?

in reply to: i like chicken #1035090

“if you dont thinK being bound up and swung around in the air IS traumatizing have someone try that with you.”

Since never in the history of chicken waiving rituals (AFAIK) have those squaking balls of feather ever uploaded their birdseeds (thrown up) upon the sinner’s head (although I can’t say the same about the downloading), I say we can safely assume those chickies are not human, and therefore, human attributes should not be applied to them, nor shall we feel the need to take their fears, anxieties, or traumas into consideration, nor be made to feel guilty.

in reply to: Suggest subtitles for others (okay, and yourself…) #1152487

cozimjewish, thanks for being here for me. :)I happen to be a she and don’t wanna pretend I’m not (though it’s probably quite obvious in the way I write and how I express myself). Being quite new here myself, I’d like to thank Randomex for handling with care and making sure that people don’t talk “over my head” either. Cozijewish, I think we make a nice Freshie support team. I have no clue as to how to go about getting a subtitle, but I’d want one too, and I guess if there’s a will, then there’s a way even if I don’t know which. So, Mods, will you grant me my request? And do I pick it, or do Your Honors?

    Any ideas? -29

“I was in macys and suddenly they started playing ‘and then he potched me’ except in this song the word wasn’t potch.”

I was in a Mexican car service when all of a sudden the radio sings “Hashem melech…” only in Spanish. I asked the driver what it means and he said “I love to dance…”

I never chapped why “b’rosh hashana” from M.B.D. is nice and beaty. Ditto to The Chevra’s “yhei, yhei…”. Totally inappropriate, unless I missed something. Talking about Destiny 4- love it! Brings back fond memories. Leather jackets and Dovi and Rabbi Green and all.

in reply to: Question of names #1036832

I also happen to have a name ending in yud and hey. And I put in the strechela. Not a dash.

Sometimes it’s worth it. Like if you’re deathly allergic to p.b. Even if you’ll end up getting it again in the future (the computer, or library card…)

I once learned that one way to fight your yetzer horah is to create a brick wall that you cannot penetrate to prevent you from accessing whatever your taavah is. So throwing out your entire PC would be one immediate, practical way of overcoming the problem, although you’re right that it doesn’t remedy the root of the problem. (from experience with cutting up library cards.)

“…shemitoch shelo lishmah bah lishmah”- but I don’t find that it works for me.

“More questionable is whether you’d compliment others even if you didn’t feel such pleasure as you describe at the realization that

they enjoyed your words, but merely the satisfaction of a mitzvah accomplished.”

I wouldn’t know. How would I know what triggered the pleasure?

in reply to: Question of names #1036829

Randomex- yeh, thanks for helping me rename myself.:) And thanks for the info too.

in reply to: #1 on your shidduch list #1187498

    cozimjewish- Thanks! 🙂

Randomex- I may not be the smartest around here, but not EVERYTHING needs to be simplified! I do chap where Popa got his name from, but Popa is Poppa (Big Daddy) in any case. And I know he’s trolling (though thanks for explaining what that means). In that case he expected my response and u don’t ignore Poppa. Not derech eretz. 😉

in reply to: #1 on your shidduch list #1187491

Randomex: The second part of my question elaborates upon the first. Therefore, I am not talking about the lack of something, but rather a positive attribute. I wouldn’t call being sane an attractive attribute. It’s an obvious prerequisite. I used the word “attractive” purposefully, because all positive middos are admirable, but each one draws a certain type of personality over others, either due to similarity, or a lack which they (consciously or otherwise) seek to fill.

Now regarding your little comment… I’ll be honest, you aren’t so wrong. I do like to spark philosophical discussions. If you want to know why I say my piece and then I go fly a kite(sometimes), its because a)I can’t be on my laptop all day (I don’t want a smartphone for that reason. The coffee in this room can become addictive.) and b) I’m not as smart as everyone here, and sometimes I loose track of the arguments in the thread- it takes too much brainpower. But I am curious and interested in knowing about whichever thread I start, and I don’t do it just to waste time and create empty threads.

Popa- I was wondering if you’d ever respond to anything I say. The impression I always got from reading what you say is that you’re the Big Popa of this place, and your words are usually short n sharp. But I have to say I’m really unimpressed now. Or were YOU trying to ‘spark a philosophical discussion’ here?

Anyways, Popa’s usually the one to go to for money, so you shouldn’t have a prob with that. 🙂

I want to empathize with all those who feel left out of the dancing. When I was a kid and life was so much more colorful and richer, it was an absolute torture for me to be stuck behind bars (literally, in some shuls), straining my eager eyes and neck and standing on tippy-toes or calculating which position to crouch in or which eye to close so I could just about see through the tiny hole- just to catch a glimpse of the beauty beyond. It was always a “pass the screaming baby” situation, a gantze matzav with one mother urging Shloimy to “take Duvi to Tatty”, and another mouthing comically to Moshe to ask the candy man for another pekele cuz Gitty didn’t get one. All this was in my ear, on my toes, in my face, with the pushing and shoving and sticky fingers on my new yom tov outfit. I’d stand for hours watching, and wish wish wish wish that I could join. I loved it!!! Simchas Torah was the time when I was convinced with all the power of my pure and (then still) innocent little bursting heart, that nothing in the world is more beautiful and true than Torah and that way of life. I’d wish SOOO badly then, to be a boy (and also when my brothers would sing zemiros and it’s really nerdy when girls do- they sing too girlyish…ao I comforted myself that one day iy”H I’ll have a husband and sons and they’ll be an extension of me…)

(Wow- can’t believe I wrote all that!)

in reply to: Name That Tune! #1194256

Well then I shouldn’t have a problem discussing my username in this thread…

And you could be a chossid without being Chassidish. A chossid is someone who goes lifnim meshuras hadin. ‘Chassidish’ is a loosely distributed term, generally used as a category of people wearing round fur hats and long satin outercoats and black or white socks, sometimes boots too.

Back to the songs… can you guess this one: …”futer in himmel enfert farvus?” Used to be my favorite.

    You’re really inspiring me

When the monster lets you be

Tell him to set me, too, free

    And when you pray

    These holy next five day(s)

For me, too, give a little sway

    To send my sins away

    And blessings our way :):):)

in reply to: How can I know? #1033827

I mean I don’t do things for other people. Farkert- I wish that what I express externally would be genuine. My question is, is it or not? no problem, btw. Thanks for responding.:)

in reply to: How can I know? #1033825

Okay- wow. It’s so nice to hear such insightful thoughts from intelligent and considerate people. (Lior- that was for you too…)

Daniel Q- You’re right. Guess I’m sacrificing the moment for my big scale dreams, which means I might not achieve those either.

    ivory- What does normal mean?

Randomex, my friend, I know people who are a little “off” too. I’m not talking about anything obvious (eye roll, ‘cuz my pride just got slightly dented). It’s something really subtle, something that’s taking me years (!!!) to put my finger on. None of my friends know what I’m talking about when I allude to any of this feeling like something is not quite right.

“This question doesn’t bother you enough to interfere with living your life, does it?” (sorry, I didn’t figure out how to use italics here)- Well, what do you call living? If you looked at my resume or observed my daily life or had to give shidduch info on me, then no. But if living means richly, being ALIVE in the fullest sense of the word, then yeh, boy does it.

Cozimjewish- “Honestly, I have never thought to think about such a thing.”- Can’t say I’m not jealous.

“I don’t feel the need to know if other people think I’m happy.”- It’s got nothing to do with what other people think.

    Thanks Cinderella and yytz.

in reply to: Question of names #1036820

Randomex- I see you aren’t making things easy for me… Firstly, I am now Eftach. Secondly, what does (AFAIK) mean? Thirdly, whether or not the name is currently used is irrelevant; it’s a biblical name (well sort of) and therefore it’s a possibility. And I actually personally know someone called Bitya. Fourthly, I’ve never heard of Bat-eil either, but it seems like shopping613 has, so I respect that and I was responding to her.

in reply to: How do you translate your Hebrew name? #1034333

Sorry- thanks LF and Randomex for your constructive criticism. How can I change my name, then, to eftach bchinor? Because that’s what I really meant. Anyways, Randomex, you’re right. It’s never too late to start over, especially this time of year, and maybe a name change will change my mazal (not sure if that’s good or bad…) And I’m just a little creeped out knowing that you’re keeping track of my humble eight postings…

in reply to: How do you translate your Hebrew name? #1034330

Hi, (shake, thump)- I’m I Will Open with a Harp. Nice to meet y’all! And you are…?

in reply to: Think fast- What's the randomest think you're thunking? #1034783

I’m thinking about how cute penguins are and what a shame it is that they’ll never be flattered by my compliment. And now another thought is tickling and niggling at the edge of my brain stem: does the enjoyment I feel at complimenting people and seeing their faces light up emanate from a healthy place of caring for others, or is it subconsciously a desire to get them to like me? hmm.. I’d really wanna know the answer to that one.

in reply to: Question of names #1036816

Batkah sounds nice. That’s what my little brother calls me (er…what he would’ve had that been my name…) He’s Yedid-Kah. Don’t do Batel- Bat’l is better, as in Bat’l B’shishim. Or Bottle-really, whichever you prefer. By the way, for accuracy’s sake, the authentic name is Bisya and not Batya.

in reply to: In/Out of the Box? #1051951

    True, RebYidd. I agree.

Letakein Girl- yeah? or are they all following the person in front and walking in circles?

in reply to: In/Out of the Box? #1051946

Good one, HaLeivi. Think I’m gonna try it. Wait- does that mean you want me to be wishy-washy? 🙂 I’m assuming it means to break my preconceived cultural notions and selfishness, while maintaining societal boundaries. Did I chap?

in reply to: In/Out of the Box? #1051944

oomis- Why is it good to be mainstream?

in reply to: self squashing and growth #1034799

Substituting with positive thoughts doesn’t negate the negative thoughts; it just pushes it away for the time being but the thought still niggles. But I liked what Weinberger said. It’s true! Thanks!

I have to say that I find myself getting teary from reading these posts, Froggie. The fact is that this is a totally anonymous forum, but still, a Yid is a Yid all the way- even bchadrei chadorim and when no one would know otherwise, and the yiras shomayim and emeskeit comes through even here… I’m really proud to be part of such a nation! At the risk of sounding schmaltzy- mi k’amcho yisrael:)

in reply to: Think fast- What's the randomest think you're thunking? #1034780

RebYidd23- random would be anything that connects to nothing or anything or everything.

in reply to: self squashing and growth #1034797

Squeak- what’s HGH? Healing Guilty Hirhurim?

The rest of you- thanks. I know teshuva and tefilla are called for, especially this time of year- but is that really the answer to- as Letakein Girl says- “The ability to turn off our inner critic”? And if it is, in what way?

in reply to: Everyone Must Answer: Your Favorite Song #1032966

Nothing beats Moshe Goldman’s Camp Shalva music. The music, singers, and everything about it is… real.
