in reply to: dating coach? #722319

Why would you need a coach totell you if you should continue to date a person? No one knows you like you do, I will tell you what a wise person told me when I was ” in the parsha”-they said I should continue going out if there was no outright reason to say no. So I did use this advice, with a few suitors, and you know what? It worked! Eventually, the matter got clarified,it came from within me. Not from someone else. So my advice would be,go out with this person till you find a reason to say no. You never know….it might change into a yes. Good luck.

in reply to: Nittel Nacht On Friday Night! #837193

Oh,thanks,I didnt know that! It’s very interesting. I wouldn’t think that we shouldn’t learn Torah because it can go bad, I would think that Torah is Kodesh, no matter when it’s learned.

Is this a universally held belief? Or is it a chumra that some take upon themselves?

in reply to: Nittel Nacht On Friday Night! #837175

I have a very dumb quest. What is nittel nacht?

in reply to: your best vacation?? #721256

The Atlantis hotel in the Bahamas…absolutely stunning, from the scenery, the aquariums, the beaches and pools, very family friendly…just have to pack all your food from home as there isnt any kosher restaurants. The kids are begging to go back but it is a pretty penny…

in reply to: would you go into a shidduch with a boy from a divorced home? #721005

You really can’t generalize in this situation. It’s possible that a person from a divorced home will be so much more careful that they don’t fall into the same situation that they grew up in,with only one parent living at home. They could so much have been scarred that it would make them try their utmost to have a good, healthy marriage.

Then again,it’s also possible that they saw bad behaviors modeled in front of them by the parents, and even though divorce was very hard on the person,it is all he or she knows,so it’s possible for him/her to fall into the same situation.just because he or she doesn’t know any better.

I would say look into the person, ask around…are they stable, good natured, responsible, mentchlich? Then go ahead and try. You never know…also,it’s a plus if the person had some type of counseling at the time,to help him/her deal with the trauma of divorcing parents. This way it’s not buried under the carpet,so to speak. It’s all out there and dealt with.

    Good luck!

Rocky mountains-yuuuum….cholent pie sounds delish! I wish I knew of tha earlier in the day,I would’ve made that tonight….hopefully next Sunday night! Thanks

in reply to: Leftover chulent? #915893

Thanks everyone! Can you guess what I I’ll be having for supper tonight?! I’m not usually a “leftovers” fan in general, but feel bad to waste this stuff every week.

Real Brisker-my question regarding chulent as opposed to any other food is that the chulent is cooking from Friday and all day Shabbos, and I don’t cook like that usually. So I was asking if the long cooking sort of kills the shelf life of the cooked chulent, and limits the window of opportunity, so to speak, of when it’s ok to eat it till. That’s all I meant. I just wanted to know if anyone ever did such a thing…

Read this weeks Mishpacha Magazine. There is an article about Wildes, an immigration lawyer in Manhattan.

I believe he is on the cover.

in reply to: Tubes in Babies Ears #727819

Don’t be nervous! We had tubes put in a child of ours that had terrible reflux so that what he was refluxing up was going to his ears and causing ear infections! He was vomiting for his whole first 14 months and getting so sick in the ears too ,but he couldnt tolerate the oral antibiotics so we put tubes in.

You should go to a dr. that is affiliated in a good (preferably city,if you are in ny)hospital. The dr. took seriously 5-7 min to put in the tubes, we had to wait a bit for the anesthesia to wear off, as someone else posted earlier. My son did not show any signs of distress after the surgery, quite the opposite, actually,he began to walk 2 days after, being that now he can balance better due to not having fluid in his ears!

The only down side is that we did have to schedule check-ups at the ENT every 3 months just to make sure the tubes were in place.

One tube fell out after almost 2 yrs,and the second tube was manually taken out at a check-up when the dr was able to reach in and grab it close to 3 yrs. At that time my son outgrew the vomiting and refluxing so they were not needed anymore.

The good part of tubes also is if the child gets an ear infection w/tubes,they dont ahve to take oral meds, you put the antibiotic drops straight into their ears for a week twice a day.

Hope this helped, dont be nervous…we all hate to take our kids to the hospital, especially for surgery, but this will really make your life and that of your childs much easier!

Good Luck!! And keep us posted!

Rabbi rock-she cant be with her friends in sleepaway campo because in our circle the kids go away for the summer with their parents.

Poster-she is in this school because that is my communitys school and that is my husbands request. there are some moms who do cover their hair, all in all, they are respectful even if they dont cover their hair.

    sms-keep me posted on that!thanx!

moving-i will check into shoshanim!thanks! and iheard about kaylie but didnt think my daughter would appreciate that type of camp. no reason really, just figured i would go with a camp thats been doing their thing for alot of years as opposed to starting up brand new.

    thanks everyone-keep the suggestions coming!

in reply to: Girls Summer Camps – Help! #871470

sacrilege-i know,i was thinking about sternberg. I also heard from a previous camper of Girlzone that there is also a mix of campers there even though technically it is considered a kiruv camp. I heard that it is built brand new and its quite nice in the way of sleepaway camps go. So Im thinking about it from that end. I also heard that Raninu is pretty clean and kind of luxurios, but it is very expensive. The other 2 camps are much cheaper. Help!!!

Squeak-your sense of humor is too cute for me…

    EDITED

in reply to: Washing Machine #708166

I got a new machine in the summer-its a combination-it loads from on top, but it doesnt have an agitator so it is considered like a front-loader.It also uses the HE detergent and has seriously like 15 cycles. I love it but it took time to get used to in that you cant just open it up in the middle to throw something in that you forgot. Also, I never see the machine making suds so I always wonder if my clothes are getting clean! Anyway, my appliance repair-man happened to be in my basement for my dryer and he was very unhappy with me that I bought this new machine. He said that had I asked him what to buy, he would have reccomended an ordinary old fashioned machine with an agitator as they are less apt to breaking.

    Go figure!

in reply to: Depressing Conversation With 7th Grade BY Girl #736897

I have a tv and I have no problem letting my kids watch some pg13 shows/movies, aslong as the homework and studying is done and it is before 9pm.My daughter goes to a very right-winged sunday program and has girls from BYBP in her group. They outright were telling me that they watch hanna montana and wizards of waverly place and high school musical and jonas bros etc…its clean fun-but they were very clear to tell me that if anyone at school found out about it they would be in big trouble at school. They have a tv but it is hidden in the parents room and when they go to a hotel in the summer-apparently every shabbos they would go away-they would watch the whole time! And these are 6 and 7th graders in BYofBP!They know to hide that they watch tv!

Personally, Ithink parents should watch out for far more dangerous behavior like drinking and drugs…tv is harmless but hey thats just my oppinion!

in reply to: i need motivation to lose weight #702178

Thank You all sooooo much for your great and insightful ideas! I will keep reading and rereading all of them.

Someone mentioned to not have junk food in the house etc. but I forgot to mention one problem-I have an 8yr old who weighs 42 lbs! so i like to have plenty of junk to get her to gain weight. Also I fry chicken cutlets and fish and make meatballs-you know -fatty stuff-in order to get her to gain. My other kids are also smallish, but not as extreme as that child so they can also use more calories.

I just find it hard to make 3 different dinners every night!I obviously dont fry my chicken and fish-that gets baked, but its more of a problem when the whole meal is not so calorie light.

in reply to: Lulav and Esrog Set for Child? #696761

Cherrybim-there is no such thing as fake tzitzis so i have to put on him the real thing. As for unkosher meat-c’mon-i should trief up my house to save a few dollars?i would never do that. And speaking about the tzitzis, actually my cleaning lady butchered a couple of them but my husband said its ok for my son to wear them because at this age he is wearing them for chinuch not because he really has to.So he is actually wearing possul tzitzis.

my son is not going to know the difference if his llulav cost a thousand dollars or if i got it for free.He will feel like he is part of the jewish people in shul when he waves it and that to me is all i need from him right now!i need him to love judiasm and to be proud of who he is which is the lesson i am trying to impart.i didnt think this issue was so heated!

WIY-thanks for the advice.i think iwill ask my husband if he can take our son lulav and esrog shopping.that sounds like fun for both of them!and i am trying to give him a love of the mitzvos by getting him a set!

in reply to: Lulav and Esrog Set for Child? #696758

he is 4.i dont think i need to spend $ on a set for him that may or may not be used. i just thought it would be nice for him to have his own set like the big boys.its more for chinuch then for obligation.if i can get away with saving some $ im all for it.his father will have a mehudar set so if he wants to make the bracha then he can.i just thought it would be cute to let him carry his own set.his father really doesnt let him get too close to his!
