enlightenedjewMemberThey must’ve changed the arch of titus then. It was barred when I was there 2 yrs ago
enlightenedjewMemberSam2-
You can’t walk under the arch of titus – it’s blocked off and barred.
enlightenedjewMemberMy wife and I visited Rome a couple of years ago, we had a blast.
There’s so much OTHER stuff to do there besides churches.
As for the sistine chapel, it’s not pashut that it is completely forbidden to enter – ask your LOR about it.
Thanks.
enlightenedjewMemberMy post was edited to a point where my original intent was lost.
I think your intent to criticize frum people in general and say Loshon HaRa against a large segment of the Jewish People was still evident in your post by implication, if not directly.

When my wife and I bought our house, we paid for it with OUR hard earned $$$. It didn’t even occur to us to ask our parents for anything.
A house is unlike any gift out there. It comes with 30 years’ worth of payments, not just the down, and you’ve gotta be able to afford that (and taxes and insurance and maintenance) as well….
enlightenedjewMemberAnyone who qualifies is entitled. If the government is foolish enough to leave a dozen loopholes, you can’t blame people for pursuing the benefits.
What really is at issue here is the problem (not a problem?) of willfully placing yourself at the mercy of others for parnassa.
enlightenedjewMemberThe wife & I REALLY needed to get away, so we went to Paris for 8 days in May. We left our 1.5 year old in our house with my sister for 4 days, then they went to my parents for the rest of the time. The baby had a great time with aunt, bubby and zeidy, and we had a great time away. Baby was kept so busy he hardly knew we were away.
Word to the wise – we bought (for about 15 euros) 10 hours of Internet time at our hotel, and brought along a smartphone w/ Skype. We spoke to my sister and our baby every night via Skype.
enlightenedjewMemberTalk to the guy. What’s the worst that’ll happen, marriage??
enlightenedjewMemberWhat about a ….

Plan to move somewhere (if you can get a job) where you can afford to live

enlightenedjewMemberTry hotels in the 9th and 4th arrondissments or districts. The 9th is also known as the Opera district and the 4th, the Marais.
The 9th has many kosher places around rue Richer, and has a few shuls right around there – the main, grand synagogue is on rue de la Victoire around 5-10 min walk.
The 4th’s kosher places center around rue des Rosiers.
My wife and I just came back from Paris a few weeks ago; we had a great time. We stayed right around the corner from rue Richer in the 9th on a street called rue Geoffroy Marie.
We did eat by chabad, but chabad is on the Champs Elysees, a 45 minute walk. Is that the chabad you’re referring to?
enlightenedjewMemberWe paid $660 for a mohel in the northern NJ area. Mohel did a good job but had terrible service and no after care visit. He also asked ME to have many machshirim ready for the bris! We’d never use him again if we’re zoche to make another bris and would not recommend him. In short, if you’re paying already, make sure you receive the customer service you deserve. We felt that the mohel took advantage of us because of our obligation to do a bris…

You sure about that??
enlightenedjewMemberCherrybim, you may be confusing cause and effect. Rebbes and gedolim may have come to NY BEFORE it got to the point that it is today, not the other way around.
Also, your point may illustrate why NY has become so expensive – the more rebbes/gedolim/institutions, the more people want to live there. The more people want to live there, the pricier the area.
That’s a simplistic economic model, for sure. But it doesn’t go really far beyond supply & demand, my friend.
enlightenedjewMemberI think wolfishmusings & mikehal2382 have it right. Salaries may be higher in GENERAL in NY area, but a) that does not hold true for everyone and b) in many instances the lower cost of living outweighs the drop in salary when moving out of NY metro. Remember also that NYS is VERY generous with it’s welfare and assistance programs; a generosity that some are dependent on and may not find at all in other places.
I think the real problems stem from leaving family and friends and an established way of life. It’s psychologically difficult to just “pick up and move”. Wolf, my wife and I are also wrestling with the idea of moving out. We live in the Monsey area and both of us really, really dislike it; we’d love to move out to Baltimore or Texas but the impact that will have on our families also gives us pause.
enlightenedjewMemberHanab, ok:

“me: so let me get this straight, if someone believes in your guy, even if he has killed and tortured many people, he will go straight to heaven.
him: yes, belief in him overides everything.
me: and if you dont accept him then you are going to burn forever, even if you were always a good person.
him: yes, as i said.
me: so the many nazis that accepted him, are sitting on some clouds playing the harp and eating steak and champagne, and the innocent babies, women and men that were brutally tortured and degraded and finally murdered, they are all burning forever.
him: well…yes
me: i have no interest in such an evil “religion””
Just to play devil’s advocate here, that argument doesn’t stand on it’s own two feet. What you’re essentially saying is that the missionary is wrong because his belief system doesn’t make sense, yet we find things in Judaism that don’t make logical sense either.
If you’re trying to refute a belief system and favor another because the former is illogical, you’d better make sure the latter is.

May 4, 2011 2:09 pm at 2:09 pm in reply to: Getting Married & Trying To Decide To Have TV Or Not #764340enlightenedjewMember“hey.. thats a lot like what me and my wife do. we like to go into bars and pool halls and all kinds of low places in las vegas. then we have religious discussions about how untznius the women were and how vulgar all the talk was. its a real eye-opener and has raised our consciousness quite a bit.”
Mod-80, that’s a little disingenuous.
May 3, 2011 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm in reply to: Getting Married & Trying To Decide To Have TV Or Not #764314enlightenedjewMemberI take issue with the notion that TV watching on the whole is ‘inane’ and a ‘waste of time’ and that it takes away from the relationship between you and your spouse. My wife and I watch the occasional TV program or movie, and will very frequently pause the “action” and then get into some pretty religio-intellectual discussions about what’s going on. Some of the best discussions we’ve had were about to kibud as it related to “The Office”.
Just my 2 cents…
enlightenedjewMemberwhat are we talking about?????????

Come on – these women were dressed OK, and they were attractive!! Look, this poster was in BROOKLYN – why not give those who live there a modicum of pleasure and enjoyment to brighten their dreary lives – after all, they live in Brooklyn!!
enlightenedjewMemberThis is very true. My wife and I recently went to an OU conference session in Teaneck on the cost of Orthodox living. Many words were spoken but not much substance was said.
What can we do about this?
enlightenedjewMemberAnd, I might add, I am APPALLED at the portrayal of Pesach responsibilities and roles in popular Jewish media. In my house it is both the husband and the wife’s Pesach responsibility to clean and cook. Not – it is the wife’s responsibility and the husband helps out. It is BOTH our responsibilities at the get go.
enlightenedjewMember40 lashes, then stockade.
enlightenedjewMembera mamin-
I look very much to Pesach because we don’t MAKE ourselves crazy with cleaning and expense. We do what we need to do, spend wisely, and enter yom tov like normal people, not rags. We don’t spend $1,000 on food just FOR ONE WEEK.
enlightenedjewMemberYou cannot compare the value of saving (potentially) hundreds of dollars on matzah to the marginally better taste

Actually, there was a long period in “der alter heim” where most women did NOT cover their hair…

enlightenedjewMemberTMB-
What about women who work in an environment that precludes covering your hair with a hat or tichel or snood? What are they supposed to do?
enlightenedjewMemberThe real fraud is the exorbitant prices these businesses charge for a shaitel. They hold people financially hostage because hair covering is a necessity…
