Ariellah: Another difference between the two yeshiva’s is their emphasis in secular studies. Based on your posts, my impression is that it isn’t a major priority for you.

Goq: I’d hate to burst your bubble, but everyone calls it Schlangers, even the bachurim that learn there.

Goq: No one can ever be innocent because there is no one in the world that has never done anything wrong. Rather “innocence” is a relative term that requires a comparison to the actual charges in each case. Here, the charge is second degree murder and manslaughter. George Zimmerman is innocent with regard to these charges (assuming innocence until there is evidence to the contrary). Therefore I must disagree with you, George Zimmerman IS innocent.

The way I was taught is that if you have to “worry” that the doors may open at any time there is no problem, because you don’t have privacy.

(for all those that will respond, “but you can push the stop button on the elavator…”, for the same price you can close the door to your house when the repairman is there.)

Its rude and unacceptable. If you didn’t have the protection of anonymity provided by sitting in your car, you would never do it. Would you do it in the grocery store or coffee shop?

Good news JFem. You said there should be a day that circles that usually don’t mingle should have that opportunity. Well that is what Tu be’av is all about. The girls would dance in the fields for the guys, and the guys would pick them up. Problem solved.

147: Although I haven’t gone through the sugya recently, I am pretty sure that most contemporary poskim hold that women wearing “womens” pants is not lo silbash. However, most of these same poskin hold that wearing pants is still assur because of Tznius problems. This is why many women will wear pants at a women’s gym, which has fewer tznius concerns.

I would hypothesis further that this is the reason that many MO women wear pants with a skirt over them.

in reply to: Am I Smart Enough for Law School? #984466

Playtime: I am in Law school now, so it is possible that i may know more than many of the very wise and knowledgeable posters here.

    1) To get into the elite t-14 schools you need to score at least high 160’s, preferably low 170’s. To get into a lesser ranked tier 1 school low to mid 160’s are usually fine.

    2) It depends how you define getting through law school. Obviously, some people do better than others. But most of the yeshiva guys that I know in school are doing pretty well (average or above). I didn’t make a real study, but my impression is A) The students that are brilliant can do well by just cramming towards the end of the semester. B) the students that prepare and study hard throughout the semester to pretty well even if they aren’t super smart. C) those that aren’t really smart and don’t study hard throughout the semester and try to figure it all out at the end don’t do well.

    3) There are several books that you can read that give you a taste of what law school is like so that you can decide if it is for you or not. I suggest “law school confidential”, “1L” by Scott Turow, and “law school insider”. (Law school insider seems to be out of print so you might have to find someone that already owns it to borrow from.)

Another book that might help a lot is “getting to maybe”. It’s a book that explains the unique testing style of law school exams, and teaches you how to write essay answers that the professors are looking for.

In most states it is legal to “use” tobacco products under 18. It is just illegal to sell or supply minors with tobacco, but it is legal for them to use it.

In addition, I am skeptical of studies that say there are minimal long term effects from smoking marijuana. I know too many pot heads whose brains are fried even when they aren’t high to believe that it has little affect.

    Rabbi Perfect: Try this.

Everything is always traveling at light speed at all times. This travel is taking place in a 4 dimensional field (time being the fourth dimension). For all intents and purposes this means we are all traveling through time at the speed of light. The faster we travel in the other three dimensions necessarily takes away from traveling through time at the speed of light. Thus the faster we travel the slower we travel through time.

(There is more to the theory than that which involves gravitational pull over distances, but this is the main part that people refer to).

Oomis: to answer your question from two years ago about overestimating the value of the ring affecting the Kidushin. You are exactly right, that is why we specifically don’t give anything other than a plain gold band for Kidushin so that the girl has a pretty good idea of what she is getting. (the engagement ring has nothing to do with kidushin).

Rabbi Perfect: Theory of relativity in one sentence. All matter travels through time at about the speed of light, which is maximum speed, therefore the greater the speed something travels the slower it moves through time.

Akuperma:”If a student is good enough to get into Harvard or Columbia, or even to Brooklyn Law School or SUNY-Buffalo or University of Baltimore, or even good enough to pass the first year and read law – the student probably has the ability to sit down and read up on the subjects they are weak and work on the skills they need.”

From personal experience I can tell you that someone with no secular education whatsoever can do well in law school.

This may not be the advice you are looking for, but if you are the type of person than can teach yourself with good books (a good skill to have in law school) you can probably do fine by getting the Kaplan LSAT prep books and by taking previous LSAT exams.

This goes back to old posts. I was taught that December 25 (now Jan 6, because of the Gregorian Calender) was a pagan holiday for thousands of years. When they made up Christianity they wanted to appeal to the pagans so they made a Christian holiday the same day as the pagan holiday. The reason for Nittel is because of the pagan holiday.

As an Aside, the pagan holiday was started from Adam Harishon who made a seuda out of Hakaras hatov to Hashem. As the days got shorter Adam thought that Hashem was destroying the world, but a few days after the winter solstice he saw that the days were getting longer, and the change must be part of the natural cycles that Hashem created. Therefore he made a seuda which was then repeated annually. However eventually as a”z became rampant, this hakaras hatov was warped into a holiday to the “sun gods”.

First, The USA is a Federalist Country, NOT democratic. If you don’t know the difference look it up.

Second,YYTZ: Romney supports abortion in cases where the mother’s life is at risk. But even more importantly as President, Romney couldn’t ban abortion even if he wanted to. The most he could do is stop federal funding. He could also nominate pro-life Supreme Court Justices. However, even a pro-life justice wouldn’t ban abortion, the most they would say is that it is a question for the several states and not up for the Federal Government to decide.

I have used when driving through the night. I drank it when i started getting that zoned feeling (2 a.m.), if you know what i’m talking about. While I can’t say it got me wide awake and perky, I can say that I wasn’t drowsy and I was able to drive for a few more hours. Lasted me till sunrise which always wakes me up.

While I am sure the main ingredient is caffeine, there is plenty of other stuff in there. While I can’t prove there was no placebo effect, it did work better than coffee works for me.

Why in the world would they need an x-ray to know haw many bones there are in the back. Do you really think they couldn’t examine a skeleton if they wanted.

In addition, the Gemara Berachos (28b) is obviously only referring to vertebrae that bend while bowing properly. I am sure that if one were to examine which vertebrae bend while bowing the number will be 18. It never says that there are only 18 vertebrae.

If i am not mistaken, donating organs for a transplant is never a problem. The problem is that when you sign up to donate on your diver’s license, they can also use your organs for research, which is assur.

Post-mortem almost all donations are for research, because after the person is dead it is much less effective to use the organs for transplants.
