WordPress is a great option, after looking into it and trying various combinations I have found that this is the best way to set up a site:

buy a domain of your own about $11 a year(godaddy.com is fabulous at customer service) the reason not to take a wordpress domain is because they can decide to take your content offline without notifying you and you have no control of your content

buy a hosting package (again I recommend godaddy) about $60 a year

if you buy your domain and hosting on go daddy you can launch the wordpress application on the godaddy site as well and that is free

then you need a theme for your site which you can also get for free, BUT after spending lots of time working on free themes I learned that they are not upgraded, have bugs and do not work 100%. So if you are serious about a site, you can use a free theme to learn a bit but to insure you can post, update info and not have a virus infected site you should buy a theme. A one time cost of about $80 (studiopress.com/themes)

She might want to consider learning WordPress. This is taking over a good part of the web. It is very easy to learn and the best way to learn is to find someone to teach privately.

Onegoal, I have posted before (see Web & Social media – latest online tips and tools). I joined the CR to share information on how to use various web tools and programs, to teach people how to convert their web presence into profits/donations and to share updates on the latest in social media.

In the meantime I don’t see much discussion in this direction so I contribute infrequently.

“We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time…. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood — it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, “Too late.”

A bit of general information on RSS feed:

There are millions of blogs on the internet. There are typically two ways to subscribe. One is via email and the other via RSS feed. (only 15% of readers online use the feed so far but it is a great tool)

If you would like to read your blog subscriptions via RSS feed you should open an account on: http://www.google.com/reader. After signing up, you will have a google reader account, then you can sign up to blogs either through the google reader (click add a subscription on the top right button) or by clicking subscribe via rss feed on your favorite blog sites.

Note the RSS feed link on this page right below the last comment. This orange symbol is typically how the link to register via RSS feed is posted.

    Hope this helps!

Cory Booker, mayor of Newark NJ, got a tweet from a local resident that the snowy streets were preventing his sister from buying diapers. About an hour later, Booker was at the sister’s door, diapers in hand.

HOW TO GET TWITTER TO START WORKING FOR YOU

    1) Open an account – twitter.com

    2) Open a separate account for your professional use. Twitter allows opening numerous accounts.

    3) From the day you start to tweet, tweet once every day. There is power in consistency. People can depend on new information and it reflects an operating profile that is dependable & reliable.

    4) Remember, your twitter followers only care about themselves.

    5) Write tweets that contain valuable information that is important to THEM.

    6) Include links often.

    7) Give credit to the original producer of any content you are sharing that is now your own.

    8) Use hootsuite.com to compose your tweets, shrink the links, and schedule when your tweet becomes visible.

    9) Tweet content you will never regret making public.

    10) If you are new to twitter, recommended to wait to open your new account for a few days until we discuss who to follow, followers, Hootsuite and how maximize your twitter useage so that Google indexes your tweets to your benefit.

Midwest 2 – I appreciate your sharing an alternative browser.

All your references to Facebook are on target.

As a coffee room member of YWN I have chosen not to refer to Facebook in any of my threads since I have learned that there are readers who have made a personal decision to refrain from using Facebook.

Social media is a sensitive topic for some of YWN’s readership.

I would not want to offend anyone. In future threads will share useful, professional information on other social media topics.

Whether you have a product/s to sell, are a service provider or represent a charitable cause your goal is to get your “idea” to spread. Ideas that spread virally enable us to leverage social media and market our cause in the most effective and economical way.

Most us of are not Toyota YET. Our focus is on getting our message out there in a way that it will spread for free.

Seth Godin wrote a phenomenal blog post explaining what makes people spread our ideas.

Here are my favorite ones. (source: Seth Godin, full text of original post: http://ow.ly/3v6Wf )

I spread your idea because it makes me feel generous.

…because I feel smart alerting others to what I discovered.

…because I care about the outcome and want you (the creator of the idea) to succeed.

…because both my friend and I will benefit if I share the idea (Groupon).

…because you asked me to, and it’s hard to say no to you.

…because I can use the idea to introduce people to one another, and making a match is both fun in the short run and community-building.

…because I care about someone and this idea will make them happier or healthier.

Which one did you like best?

in reply to: Coffee Room Topics!!!! #721678

Perhaps we can do some cosmetic changes in the coffee room & make it more blog like. When an individual posts a blog they share valuable information either professional, life experience or other. Some examples: a CPA can share some new tax laws (late in coming out this year), a parent of a special child can share some tips in coping or services, mortgage broker pros & cons of various mortgages, etc.

The entire coffee room will benefit!
