Truth be told, in NY you need $200,000 per year pre tax. There are also alternatives – places like Baltimore, North Miami Beach, Toronto and Montreal where you don’t need nearly as much…

Oh, and I forgot – I have one kid in Pre-1A, and one in Kindergarten, and am paying over $12,000 for the year. And I do pay full tuition. So, again, don’t feed me any junk about $73,000. It would never work.

BTW, I don’t live in the Tri-State. I DO live in a city where the cost of living is MUCH less. I OWN a house and the mortgage is well under $1,500. I have three kids and a wife – we spend about 200 a week on groceries. About 800 – 900 bucks a month. I pay for a portion of my health insurance. I pay for a small portion of my vision and dental insurance. We have two cars – I pay a small fortune in car payment (one is paid off). I make over $100,000 a year – but am still struggling. And I do have a college degree. It’s not easy.

$73,000 a year would bankrupt me. Don’t give me any stupidity. Yes, you can work in McDonalds (or McDovids or Dougies, or whatever) for nothing without a degree – but the more degree, the more money you will get.

Trying my best: You have got to be kidding me. ATC employees not going to college?!? I think not. I couldn’t even begin to do what they do – and I have a college degree. The math involved is graduate level at a minimum. Come on, get with the program.

We only got a couple of inches – kids played outside for a little bit. And we went shopping.

Absolutely. College is a must. Someone once approached me and told me he desperately needs a job. Can I help him? I asked what skills he has. He just gave me a blank look. I asked, “Accountant?” He said “no”. I said, “Computers?” A little. I said, I would love to help you find something, but you really have nothing that I can market to anyone.

Point being, when you suddenly realize that its the right time to find a job is not the time to go out and start getting educated in something.

Nowadays, you can get trained in all sorts of stuff without stepping foot in a college – internet (yes, many highly accredited colleges offer degrees online – I got mine from one), distance education and other means. Its great to be able to sit and learn for a few years, but use those years to prepare for after Kollel.

    Smartcookie,

I need to check with my wife. I think it is sauteed onions and mushrooms in a sauce, placed in pan over potatoe wedges and chicken 8th’s.

WAYYYYY old news. They will be opening next week. And, yes, it is expected to be the largest kosher supermarket in the world. So big, in fact, that they can have four complete aisles of Pesach supplies while still maintaining their entire stock of regular food (during Pesach time, of course).

Barring that, an awesome shwarma in lafa from Massov or some other Schwarma place takes the cake. Of course, since I am in the US, that’s a little hard.

    Wisewoman,

My rebbitzen makes different kinds of chicken:

    Garlic Chicken

    Breadcrumb Chicken

    Sweet and Sour

    Chicken Kiev

    Mushroom Chicken

    Cranberry Chicken

Take your pick. If I wouldn’t have to go to work on Friday, I would probably do more of the cooking. Right now, I only make the turkey salad, and sometimes the cholent.

I am a federal employee. Here is info you need to know:

    1. Local: The jobs are generally lower paying than feds, and you generally have little to no room to move. The benefits, if given, are generally on the lower end of the spectrum. You are also subjected to stuff like furloughs, layoffs, and other job actions. A local gov’t job is NOT a lifetime position.

    2. State: Better pay, better chance for promotion, better benefits than local. However, you are still subjected to furlough days, and other job actions. You could potentially stay in a state job for the long term.

    3. Federal: Best of the three in benefits, pay, and ability to move around and up. Likely a lifetime position, especially when your retirement is vested. Very low chance of a furlough (it happened once that the entire federal government was layed off because Congress failed to pass a budget and the continuing resolution was not extended, however, everyone got their money back in the end). If you work for the executive branch, you are virtually un-fireable. Legislative branch jobs are more at-will, meaning that you serve at the pleasure of the controlling party and their leadership. Not sure how Judicial works.

I bring my 5 year old to Mincha shabbos. He loves “helping” to take out the Torah, handing the gartel and mantel to the person doing Gelilah, and “helping” to put the sefer back. Then he gets a candy, and goes outside to play. And you know what? I would rather he be involved than not. Why should he be turned off because the sefer is “off limits”? Someone once tried to take the mantel away from him, and I gave it to they guy…. Told him that maybe if kids were being shooed away all the time instead of innocently helping, less children would be “bored” in shul.

Which president Hussein will be taking away from us very shortly anyway, so I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Yeah, whatever. Did we learn anything from 9/11? Sure, we did – let’s elect Hussein as the new President of the US. We’ll have illegals running rampant, terrorists getting passports, and everyone and their mother on welfare. We wanted change, and so help me, we are going to get irreplaceable, irreversible change. Forever. This man will change our country forever. And those who voted for him have absolutely no right to complain, kvetch or shrai over what will happen to this country. Hashem Yishmor for everyone here.

Say something. Not only is it not safe, it is against the law. If chas v’shalom something should happen, and the police or fire department show up, and find her not home, she could be looking at jail time!
