    Beans and Pasta

Put eight ounces of dried beans and eight ounces of pasta into a large pot, fill with water, and cook at a full boil for an hour.

I’m sorry, but what is affirmative action a euphemism for? I’ve only ever heard it used in its most literal definition: a law requiring less qualified blacks/women to be hired instead of more qualified white males.

Isn’t that what makes it a euphemism? I’m using the definition, “A euphemism is a generally innocuous word or expression used in place of one that may be found offensive or suggest something unpleasant.”

Do you think it’s offensive to say “passed away” instead of “died?” Or, “took his own life” instead of “killed himself?”

If those are euphemisms, I think they fall into a different category than ones such as “affirmative action” or “undocumented immigrant”. Your examples use polite language, the latter distort the underlying meanings.

How about describing a bank robber as an “aspiring account holder”?

No one can figure out why some terms are more offensive than others.

    Maybe that’s the point:

Put your opponent on the defensive by confusing him, and gain power over him by forcing him to accept your irrational demands.

Thanks for the “person first” explanation.

I suppose other examples could be:

    “troll” vs. “person who trolls”
    “moderator” vs. “person who moderates”

You can click on the link to a sub-forum, if that link is visible on the current page. If I recall correctly, there used to be a page with links to all the subforums.

If the idea was to make it a struggle to learn, the gemorah would have been written in Hebrew, not Aramaic. Aramaic was the everyday spoken language of the people, as is English in the US

I think the idea is to study the teachings of the Tannaim, Amoraim and later commentators. Those teachings are best represented in a language in which they were fluent.

I would study in Aramaic or Hebrew if I could, but for now, I have to use English. Otherwise I’d have to spend a week on each sentence.

No one here says insulting things about the Rebbe. It is his followers that bring shame upon him.

That’s a very good point. I have no criticism of the Chabad movement as a whole. Some of its followers, on the other hand, while nice and mean well, behave like it’s a cult and indoctrinate rather than teach.

My knowledge of the Boeing 737 MAX issues is limited to what I’ve read in news articles.

My impression is that the problem was not the fault of the pilots. Having 10,000 hours of flight experience in Cessna 172’s would not have helped them.

Someone at Boeing had the nifty idea of having the airplane automatically correct a stall or imminent stall, which all pilots learn how to do very early in flight training. The stall correction feature malfunctioned, and the pilots lacked the specific knowledge of how to override the overly complicated automatic system.

a drone that will only do what its programmed to do

And often programming is faulty, Or unexpected hardware problems can occur.

Consider the recent issues with the Boeing 737 MAX.

In the case of a ground vehicle, there’s always a fallback option to shut off the engine and stop. That wouldn’t work very well for an aircraft.

A lot of people consider that racist.

Isn’t the kissing of the hand a sanitary alternative to kissing the object itself? I’ve seen people actually kiss the Seder Torah.

Does shaking a fellow Jew’s hand and then kissing it, mean that you would like to kiss the person himself, except that you don’t want to spread germs?

I read this at aarp Dot org:

The good news, according to William Schaffner, medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, is that the vast majority of older adults need not worry about contracting (or spreading) the virus. Anyone born in the United States prior to 1957 is considered immune to measles, because almost everyone in that age group was exposed to the virus before a vaccine was available. People born after 1957 who were properly vaccinated, or who contracted measles, are also protected.
