If you’re talking about during Shemoneh Esrei, then they’re right.

If you’re talking about the rest of davening, then you’re still wring. What are you doing in that shul?

Its like saying what would you do if you lived in Africa,

I would eat a lot of biltong

or if you were a millionaire,

I would buy a lot of biltong and have it shipped to me

or if you were mentally retarded

I would post in a random coffee room on some random Jewish site.

Does anyone have the mekor that says or lagoyim is something that applies now and not just during yemos moshiach?

in reply to: Another view on reporting abuse #816304

Rav Aviner is a prominent Dati Leumi posek in Eretz Yisrael… He is NOT known as modern orthodox; for example he forbids women from wearing pants (even pajamas) or learning gemara

Could you clarify the difference between Dati Leumi and Modern Orthodox? For example, you mention that he forbids women from wearing pants. Is this in contrast to Rabbi Shachter, who is modern orthodox?

in reply to: Ohr LaGoyim #798343

According to the Radak the first posuk:

    ?????? ???? ???? ????? ?????? ?? ??? ????

is saying that through the yeshua of klal yisroel after milchemes gog umagog, the goyim will also have a yeshua because they will serve Hashem too.

    The second pasuk:

    ????? ???? ?????

the Radak says is also talking about by the geulah. He compares it to Yeshaya 2:3 ‘????? ???? ???? ????? ??? ????? ?? ?? ?. I assume he means that they will follow in our ways come moshiach.

Maybe the mekor for saying that or lagoyim is someting that we are supposed to be now is elsewhere.

I heard of it. I think I even saw it in taamei haminhagim or a similar sefer.

    I know of two times.

    Yishaya 49:6 “?????? ???? ????”

    and then again in 60:3 “????? ???? ?????”

I think its talking about by moshiach though. But I’m not a ba’al Nach

in reply to: Why I can't daven #791254

I agree with poppa. It is very hard to daven when you feel angry at Hashem. It is better to daven the minimum, maybe a shema and shemone esrei once a day. It is clear that even when your bitachon is weaker, your emunah stays very strong.

So I think that at least when you are davening shemoneh esrei you can have in mind that you are not doing it for yourself, but despite your anger with Hashem, you are davening for the rest of the klal that needs your tefilos. In this way, you can still daven until you are able to work past your negative feelings.

All that aside. I suggest you look for anything [kosher] at all you can do, that will give you sipuk hanefesh and simchas hachaim. This should be your overriding concern. Someone like you who is able to maintain such a strong emunah even in a difficult time, will be able to fly to the stars once you can find simcha. The yetzer hara clearly agrees with me on that and is doing all he can to prevent it. You must do all you can to fight him on this.

in reply to: Why do I feel like I am still trying to Prove Myself to them? #789476

The mekarever/mekarevee mind-state. Meaning [wrongly or not] most of us do not look at every secular/less frum Jew as a potential BT. Especially children. So when they see things that look fun, they are less inclined to think “oh that’s what they do” and more inclined to think “why can’t I do that too”.

    You are a business.

You forgot one word. Jewish. This is a Jewish business which by extension falls under the strictures of Jewish business practices. To be more specific, this is a Jewish business that caters to the Yeshivish community in particular. That means it is incumbent upon the administrator(s) of the site to monitor and yes, moderate their site according to the customs and taste of the community that they serve.

You may or may not have noticed, but the name of the site is The Yeshiva World, not The Jewish World. This is not by accident.

how could i be tznius and outgoing at the same time?!

Why is there a contradiction between tzniyus and being outgoing? As long as you are only talking to members of your gender, than you can channel your outgoing personality into making the people around you feel good. That is a big chesed. I don’t see the problem at all.

in reply to: Tzitzits in the summer time #789931

it is not the custom of even the religous jews in my vicinity to wear a kippah outside of the synagogue.

Perhaps your community believes that the halachos of the Shulchan Aruch are stringencies. Such as the halacha in Orach Chaim 2:6 not to walk four amos (6-8 feet) without any sort of head covering.

Personally, I define “religious Jews” as those who proscribe to the halacha. But perhaps that definition is a stringent definition.

in reply to: What have you "given up" to be frum? #790178

May you who are so stringent be dealt with by a stingent judge in the future.

…I dont see how this is anti-Torah at any length.

Can you see how cursing people might be anti-Torah?

But that said, keeping a slaughter free diet is not against our way of life.

    And HaShem says:

“…you may slaughter of your cattle and of your sheep, …and you may eat in your cities, according to every desire of your soul.” Devarim 12:21

Also, could kohanim during the time of the Beis Hamikdash keep a slaughter-free diet?

In fact, I argue that it is a higher priority in that you are not consuming any blood at all. And we are told not to eat blood in the Tanakh.

After an animal has been kashered correctly, there is no problem with eating any blood that might remain. We are even allowed to eat liver. Not eating meat for this reason would be like taking an entire palm tree on sukkos for a lulav.

in reply to: What have you "given up" to be frum? #790176

Suppose you don’t think it is wrong, but it just disturbs you personally?

What could possibly be disturbing about biting into a nice, inch thick, juicy steak, in maybe a nice red wine and rosemary reduction, grilled to medium rare perfection…

    Excuse me a minute.

in reply to: Do I tell the parents about kids being mechalal Shabbos??? #790516

I agree with HaLeivi if its possible. Either the parents know, or they don’t know and were likely the cause. A kid who doesn’t run away when someone he knows sees him breaking Shabbos is already in a very bad place. If they have a Rov I would go to him first.

in reply to: Can one give "Maaser" by volenteering time? #789387

I would think these are all examples of chasadim. Somehow with the da’as Torah of an anemone, I feel the same way as R’ Dovid Feinstein. But the fact that R’ Shmuel Berenbaum says differently tells me that I obviously have no clue what I’m talking about.

in reply to: Why do I feel like I am still trying to Prove Myself to them? #789473

Thats the beauty of Chabad groups.

That’s true, but compare the level of observance of Crown Heights to Boro Park or Williamsburg.

Also, the mindset of Chabad is that because they are always doing kiruv, by nature their mindset is “us” (the mekarvim) vs. “them” (the not yet mekurav). The average non-Chabadnik does not have this mentality to fall behind.

in reply to: Nashim Da'atan Kalos and Women Today #942527

In one case, R’ Shimon bar Yochai was explaining that he was worried his wife might give away his position if she was tortured. Apparently he felt a woman is more likely to cave under torture.

In the second case, the gemara is explaining why one man can’t be misyached with two women. The gemarah seems to feel that it the man can more easily convince the two women to aveiros than in the inverse case.

maybe in bp people are more insensitive.

That’s one way to put it. I would say that they are more sensitive- to people that do not conform to an accepted minhag. If everything is acceptable, then why can’t my children dress less tznius (although still within the halachic parameters)? Rather by absorbing my sensitivity to those that don’t conform to my standards, they will also absorb my standards.

in reply to: What special Shabbos dish are you making today? #789430

the flesh of fish is often referred to as meat.

Yes and so is the flesh of a fruit. But that is in English. Is that true in Judaism as well? Also, according to your explanation the zemer “v’dagim” is superfluous.

Obviously someone who has health restrictions is unable to eat meat on Shabbos. But barring that, I don’t see any reason to not eat meat on Shabbos. Maybe if someone was disgusted by the taste. The Talmud says “There is no happiness except with meat and wine”.

in reply to: I don't deserve her #795343

    Mods:

Can you change the title of the thread to “My parents don’t deserve her parents”? I noticed that although MiddlePath called it “I don’t deserve her”, he only listed facts that were not related to his person and that he has no control over. Rather than explaining that he has terrible middos and does all sorts of aveiros which would be an actual reason why he might not deserve a girl with good middos.

Vatranus is not a mitzvah its a midah. I don’t know what a good translation would be. But it means to not be makpid on things that people do or say to you.

You can be mevater on your kavod- meaning you allow someone who is supposed to give you honor in some way, to not.

You can be mevater on bad things that people do to you.

in reply to: What special Shabbos dish are you making today? #789428

Besides, doesn’t it say “basar v’dagim, v’chol matamim”?

    CharlieCorridor:

Crush fresh garlic, crushed onion (in the garlic press) and chopped dill with some lemon juice, olive oil and some salt. Mix it into a paste and spread it over the salmon. Marinate and bake uncovered.

When salmon is on sale my wife makes me make that two or three times a week.
