Al pi kabballah there are some people who refrain from saying pesukim at night.

Why not? There are places in Canada where tides regularly retreat 17 meters — vertically! Why could something like that not have happened at the sea at the time described in Sefer Shemot?

Because the Torah said it didn’t. What happened to the rest of the story? Moshe stuck out his arm with the staff and the sea split. The midrashim tell us it split into 12 parts, had freshwater springs, grew fruits and that the ground was dry. In addition all the water in the entire world split as well. We can hardly attribute this to the moon.

    charliehall:

I’m not sure if I missed a crucial post but you seem to be suggesting that the age of the universe/the evolution of man (and everything else) is as the scientists suggest they are.

This is problematic in my opinion as “ein hamikra yotzei midei pshuto”. The Torah describes a 7 day creation that began right before the creation of man 5,771 years ago. While it is true that there are psukim that are understood on an allegorical level that doesn’t negate its poshut pshat.

While I have no problem with micro-evolution, the Gemarah itself even brings cases of it (ie the story with Hillel on Friday). Macro-evolution is problematic in my opinion. The speciation that scientists have recorded are not recognized from a Torah perspective as we don’t differentiate between ‘the orange toad’ and ‘the purple toad’. This also would require billions of years that science needs for us to reach our modern incarnation.

I did not know that a ‘young universe looking old” originated by goyim as I came up with it on my own. That fact that goyim came up with something doesn’t rule out its ability to be correct.

Leave Cedarhurst and come to E”Y.

You’ll feel right at home here.

    On multiple levels.

Also we have cheaper (in some places) apts.

Virtually no tuition compared to America (~$1,000 a year)

According to the Rambam, the gemarah in Sanhedrin is about Yoshka.

By context and content that gemarah seems to be suggesting that it was the Sanhedrin who killed him. It also says that he got skilah and only had 5 students as opposed to 12 that the goyim say.

When you consider that the goyishe books were only first written half a century after they believe Yoshke died – and that the person describing his life NEVER EVEN MET HIM, (never mind the fact that each of their books have contradicting stories for just about every major occurrence in their descriptions of his life) its no wonder why there is such a divergence between what the gemarah says and what, lehavdil, the goyim say.

in reply to: How to entertain 3 kids under age 4 when they can't go out to play #722155

Well if I was home and for some reason my wife was unavailable what I would do is:

    1) Clear a space near a wall

    2) Sit kids on floor facing the wall

    3) Tell them to keep it quiet

I’m not sure how effective my method is though yet.

in reply to: HABF- Husbands against Being Fattened #1028640

Really? Lakewood apts go for $800 a month? How many bedrooms? That’s about how much I spend here in E”Y.

in reply to: The Rationalist's Guide To Judaism #721761

    The facts are that

    a) the earth is 5,771 years old

    b) the universe was created with 6 days of the earth

    c) the expansion of space suggest a 14 billion year old universe

In addition chazal tell us: Hashem is called Sha-kai -she’amar la’olam dai, which suggests that there was a universal expansion that Hashem halted.

I think that 5,771 years ago Hashem created the physical universe by rapidly expanding the initial singularity. Then at some point He said ‘dai’ and that expansion slowed to a crawl.

Voila: Old looking Universe, Young Earth Creationist.

Well we (and I use the term ‘we’ lightly since we know it is a mitzvah for the man to make the chulent) use potatoes, beans, barley, meat (whatever we can find in E”Y not much with our hechsher) paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, ketchup:bbq sauce 1:3, and dark brown sugar.

I indicated at the end of my post that I understood this and was just making a joke when I wrote “…oh wait…”

Also in E”Y you can get 10 shek per haircut, which isn’t bad if you know how to do it really well.

p_b_a: at the time of “heyos adam levado” man and woman were still one being.

    cp:

i am still not sure however why they get kadima over girls and it bothers me greatly!

This is comparable to a man sitting in a hospital bed with a bad disease. The doctors pump him full of pain killers to ward off the pain. A healthy person standing nearby says “Its not fair that he has a higher pain tolerance now because of all that painkillers you gave him”. It is common knowledge that man’s lower spiritual level is the cause of our need for the mitzvos and by extension attributes that will help us do them.

Similarly, women’s role of serving the husband is related to the aspect of ‘mekabel’ that they personify as opposed to ‘mashpiah’ that the husband has. However, this too is to our detriment as in the “World that is All Truth” EVERYONE must be a ‘mekabel’ from HKB”H. Because of this men will have a harder time adjusting to that new reality than women.

The confusion may be that there is a chain in EY called Shufersal, but it’s also known as Supersol. (And if you don’t believe me, check their web site.)

I’m 100% sure that there is not even a one English speaker in E”Y that knows this besides for you.

AC, I don’t think aliyos to neshamos work by virtue of the neshama hearing the Torah. I think when someone learns something l’iluy nishmas a person, the zechus of being the cause of someone’s learning is what the neshamah gets.

Unless a niftar has caused you to learn something I’m not sure he would get a zchus from it. In that respect actually I’d imagine that Hitler ym”sh might somehow get something for causing a Jew to learn Torah.

in reply to: Artscroll Gemorahs – English vs. Hebrew #720406

I think you’re taking it a bit too far charliebrown. In gemarah we can be medayek in the loshon to come up with different pshutim.

Its a rare day when you need to be medayek in a Yalkut M’Am Loez. The same for all the mussar seforim you listed.

The Rambam is the only other sefer that I can see a need to be medayek in. But he generally uses the loshon of the Mishanh or Gemarah. When he doesn’t the words he uses are pretty specific that there can be different girsaos teaching different halachos. Unless you are referring to something like Moreh Nevuchim in which case I’d add it to the mussar list.

One of my R”Y only switched over when there were more bochurim that didn’t understand Yiddish then that did. I think there is something to be said about learning the Jewish Talmud in a Jewish language.

in reply to: Artscroll Gemorahs – English vs. Hebrew #720402

I’m not going to ask what you are referring to, but perhaps these are words that only allude to things that we don’t talk about and are not words for those things themselves. Much like we have in Aramaic and Loshon Kodesh.

Also, until I can find a mekor for this idea I can’t really argue whether Yeshivish is a language or not. I was just giving over what I have heard. But I will ask around and see if I can come up with something.

Don’t listen to the poster above me- he’s still new2thescene.

In EY their chups are so big that they don’t pull their hats down level to their heads they tilt it back enough to not disturb the chup chas v’shalom.

Also if you don’t have stripes on your jacket and pants as well as white on white stripes on your shirt you are probably older than 45 here.

Also if your hat doesn’t have silver on it, you’re probably not from EY. Increases “with it”ness based on size of silver tab.

tmb: What I mean to say is that I don’t believe spending time on teitch is considered ameylus baTorah. Maybe it would be something like hechsher mitzvah or something but its a chiddush to me to hear that it would be considered ameylus mammash.

oomis: I have heard many times although I do not know any source, that learning Torah can only be done in a “clean” language. That is why we have learned in Yiddish, Ladino, Jewish Aramaic or Loshon Kodesh itself depending on the generation. I heard this regrading the fact that nowadays Yeshivish is considered its own language instead of a part of English so that we can use it to learn since it is ‘clean’. (clean: no words related to things we do not talk about)
