Do you have a rishon to back you up, because the Rambam seems to disagree with you. The Rambam says that through limud haTorah and through contemplation of the briah a person will come to have emunah. And from the differences in loshon that the Rambam uses in Sefer HaMitzvos and Mishne Torah about the mitzvah d’oraysa of Emunah its implied that the ultimately the mitzvah is to know that Hashem exists and not just believe.

It is impossible for someone who searches to not find the answers. I have never heard of this orthoprax, but it can only be the result of laziness. There is already nothing in science that contradicts the Torah, so it is only a matter of looking for what proves it. And there is plenty for those that look.
bderech she’adom rotzeh leilech. That is what is happening here.
Derech HaMelechMemberIs this a game?
Try peeling the tape off your yarmulkah. That might do the trick.
Derech HaMelechMemberI don’t think that chochmah bagoyim means to be inspired from them. Just that if they tell you that 2+3=5 then you can believe them.
Derech HaMelechMemberMy mother makes a salad bowl full of charoses for the matzah. A nice thick layer of charoses on matzah is what Pesach is all about.
Chaburah matzah here is $21 a pound. 5 lbs per adult will guarantee that charoses will be the only thing I will be able to afford to eat the whole chodesh Nisan.
They need to make a kosher l’pesach metamucil.

tefilas arvis rishus?
Derech HaMelechMemberYeah I agree with The Goq. It is difficult to believe that there were no familial problems and the person spontaneously decided to cut off ties.
I find it difficult to believe that someone without family problems would go off altogether. I’ve known a lot of boys that went off and ruboy k’kuloy did not get along with at least one parent.
And an intelligent reader has less of a reason to want to go off than anyone. There is more than ample sefarim to explain any question or doubts this person might have had. It is more than likely that there was a problem in the relationship.

Derech HaMelechMemberI don’t think its more difficult to become chassidish than litvish. I know a lot of baalei teshuvah and there are some that have difficulty integrating into litvishe circles and some into chassidishe circles.
I know of an MO woman that became a yerushalmi (not sure if litvish or chassidish) and recently celebrated the chasunah of a child to another yerushalmi. I know geirim that became chassidish with shtreimlach (men) and aprons (women) and shaved heads (both). I know of someone born to a real kalte litvishe heim who made is way over to the other side. Anybody can be anything they want as long as they put their minds to it. There are some groups that are easier to be a baal teshuvah in such as Boston, Nikolsberg etc.
But I don’t think anybody should feel restricted to those. You go where you feel is the right place for you and make sure that you have a rav who helps you along.

that line was great I was laughing for a long time on that one.

The L-rd works in mysterious ways. The yeitzer horah doesn’t.
Derech HaMelechMemberstickynote:
why do some people say CHOOLENT and some people pronounce it Cholent?
This is the worst. I’ve been train her for years in the correct pronunciation of CHULENT. Needless to say it hasn’t been going very well and I’m looking into other options such as polygamy.
Getting her to stop pronouncing the L in almond is also not going well.
Derech HaMelechMemberI imagine that its probably due to the country of origin. There is no letter “oy” in English. Just like there is no letter “oh” in Hebrew.
Derech HaMelechMemberI grew up in NY and am now raising a family in E”Y. From what I know I wouldn’t say that it’s harder to raise kids here per se. Just that it’s different because of the differences in society.
There are many similarities between raising kids here and in America. The kids have their own version of fashion trends here that are taken to a level I never saw before. On the other hand even the most trendy she’b’trendy here can probably do a blatt gemarah with reid. Which is much less true of America.
I one time sat in on a nice halacha shiur given by (I think he was) a bochur in shul on friday night between kabbolas Shabbos and maariv. He had a chup 3/4 the size of Florida and I’m not over exaggerating. He probably has to call in the IDF to help him comb it out every erev Shabbos. But it was a great shiur.
The hardest things to adjust to is the chutzpah here which is notorious. Not just in kids, they learn it from the pros. It takes a long time to adjust to for some people. I’ve noticed though that usually the children of Americans are better with this than pure-bred sabras.
Every place has its ma’alos and chesronos in raising children. You need to shatz them all up and see which ones you can work around or accommodate.

Didn’t you ever hear the phrase “who will police the police?” I just took out the word for police and tried to put in psychologist.
Derech HaMelechMemberCan’t you just make an absentee ballot in the state that you originated since you likely lived there for more than 30 days of he since the previous election?
Derech HaMelechMemberWe were told to not do any ultrasounds unless absolutely necessary because bracha only rests on something hidden from the eye.
Derech HaMelechMemberMaybe you can get dressed up as a rooser and do Szola kakasz mar? I don’t think there is a more hartzedig song than that out there.
Derech HaMelechMemberWhen I was in Yeshivah, Shiur Klali took the place of regular shiur and I’m pretty certain the kollel there was learning the same thing or at least had learned the material. There was also a chazara shiur given by each Rebbe to his shiur later on in the day. I think whoever fell asleep in regular shiur fell asleep there too and those that wouldn’t didn’t. Those that weren’t interested at all usually stayed in their rooms.
Derech HaMelechMemberQuis psychologiet ipsos psychologes?
Derech HaMelechMemberMaybe explain to him that Jewish Law prevents you from being able to give him the experience of a Shabbos so long as he will drive to/from your house. Maybe he would be interested in spending an entire Shabbos by you when he doesn’t have to go in Shabbos morning. Maybe Purim or Pesach. If he is interested in learning more about Judaism maybe he would be interested in Partners in Torah or an Aish program. There must be plenty of options.
Derech HaMelechMemberHis tapes are beyond incredible.
I’ve heard that Rav Chaim wrote a letter to the surviving family saying that the the three were a korban for Klal Yisroel.
Derech HaMelechMember1,323poundUrsine:
Are you sure that you are using shaos zmaniyos and not calculating for your place along the time zone? Do you know why you use shaos zmaniyos instead of shaos shavos if you do?
I think Martians would do the same as their hosts do. Which is not so surprising since Canadians would too.
Derech HaMelechMemberAnother possibility is that Rashi is learning that bein adom l’Mokom is somehow a way of learning how to better be mekayem bein adom l’chaveiro.
If you start from lashon acher and read through the Rashis then “????. ??? ???? ????” is saying all the mitzvos bein adom l’makom are commentary on bein adom l’chaveiro.
I’d probably have to be a big ba’al mussar to understand what that really means but it would solve the issue you find unsettling.
Derech HaMelechMemberSomething like that. If you know your longitude you can calculate it out. I don’t remember the cheshbon. There is a really thick sefer that discusses time-related mitzvos. In it he explains how.
Derech HaMelechMemberKoysel. Unless your Sephardi, then Kotel. Unless your Teimani, then Kothel.
Derech HaMelechMemberDid you look up the Gemara?
The Gemara says that Hillel said
“What you hate, don’t do to your friend. This is the whole Torah. The rest is explanation.Go and learn.”
So as to your second question, according to Hillel it is the whole Torah in a nutshell.
As to your first question. You missed out on half of Rashi. After Rashi explains that ‘friend’ is also HKB”H he says “don’t transgress His words [just like] you would hate if your friend transgressed your words”.
The last Rashi on this story explains that the rest of the Torah is an explanation of what HKBH’s words are that we shouldn’t transgress. For that Hillel said “Go and learn” what those things are (ie. the rest of the Torah).
Derech HaMelechMemberThe minhag not to make kiddush between 6-7 is brought down in the Shulchan Aruch HaRav if I remember correctly. The reason is because during that hour on Friday night the mazal ‘madim (mars)’ has the greatest influence in the world. Mars is usually identified with bad things.
Since the paths of the ?’ ????? ??? in the sky are not typically constrained by the decision of any government to abide by DST, I would say yes. The same would be true of ???? ??????.
Derech HaMelechMemberThe Yaivetz bshem the Arizal brings the minhag of kissing the mothers hand after coming home from shul al pi sod.
I imagine some sefardishe sefarim would mention it too.
Derech HaMelechMemberblueprints:
That gemora in BM 30b says that is why Yerushalayim was destroyed. I guess Yerushalayim and the Bayis Sheini were destroyed for the same reason
Derech HaMelechMemberThe reason why I ask is because the gemara in Yoma does bring psukim for the Bayis Rishon. It is not uncommon for the gemara to base ideas back into psukim (or from psukim depending how you look at it).
I only recently got into sifrei machshava and haven’t started the Maharal yet, but I will definitely look there to see what he says.
Derech HaMelechMemberMaybe the question is:
Are we supposed to give tzeddakah because it’s a mitzvah or because we are rachmanim bnei rachmanim?
If it’s because it’s a mitzvah then I can understand giving smaller denominations to more people.
If it’s because we are rachmanim then I can understand giving a larger donation to a single person in order to be more beneficial.
Derech HaMelechMembermdd:
I’m not quite sure I’m following your logic here:
Bris Milah is not objectively questionable…and those that question it are idiots.
When we say something is objectively questionable or not, we mean that from a non-biased point of view doing something may be wrong or right. The problem here is that we (you and me) are biased to say that it is unquestionable because it is our halacha. Those that argue against it say that we are mutilating a child’s body there is risk of complication and we are hurting the child.
To these people we are clearly making a chilul Hashem with every bris just like the prevailing belief in New Zealand is that shechita is inhumane and b extension a chilul Hashem.
According to your logic we should stop eating meat so that we don’t make a chilul Hashem for them either.
This is not true though. So you have to say that the application of “Chilul Hashem” does not apply to anything and everything that the goyim reject.
cantoresq:
I didn’t say you need proof. I just said that the proof you offered was not a good one. Also your explanation is not a sevara as it is not based on logic but rather your personal negative feelings to taking money from the government.
Derech HaMelechMemberJust this past Shabbos I was learning some Sifsei Chaim and he brings the gemara in Berachos that says that
“all [the good things- Rashi] that the nevi’im prophesied was only for ba’alei teshuvah, but for tzaddikim gemurim ‘ayin lo ra’asa elokim zulasecha'”
He explains that a ba’al teshuvah gets extra siyata d’shamaya to grow because Hashem wants the person to come back and without the help the struggle would be too hard.
But a tzaddik gamor doesn’t get this siyata d’shamaya- his growth is with his own strength so to speak and therefor his reward is that much greater.
So even though “b’makom she’baalei teshuvah omdin tzadikim gemurin einom omdin” and therefor a tzaddik gamor may not reach a higher level than a ba’al teshuvah per se. But since his growth was of his own accord ‘l’fum tzaarah agra”.

Derech HaMelechMembercantoresq:
What about someone born to a rich family? The father gives him 100 million in the bank or whatever and the kid supports his own family off the interest. Never works a day in his life. Is that scenario impossible?
Also I’m not so into politics, but why exactly should we care if goyim practice toeiva marriages?
It is also interesting to note many gedolim learned for crazy of numbers an hour every day sleeping very little and when asked about it gave the same answer “I have time to sleep when I’m dead, now is the time to learn”.
And indeed working if far more important that learning, at least for the overwhelming majority of people. It’s a mistaken ideology to say otherwise.
You would be doing a big mitzvah for me if you can point me to a sefer that expresses this ideology.
mdd:
Mila is not objectively questionable. Living off others is
The proof that milah is if anything subjectively questionable are the movements to ban bris milah. How can you say it is not objectively questionable when such movements exist?
How about kashrus? Some countries have already banned shechting animals in their countries. Should they not eat kosher meat so as not to cause chilul Hashem by those that think we are being cruel to animals?
anon for this:
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but limud Torah is also a mitzvos asei. And a mitzva that Jews throughout history have risked their lives for. We both know that using food stamps is not a mitzvah. But if using food stamps will allow one to be mekayem the mitzvah that is shokul kneged kol hamitzvos, I haven’t been convinced yet that I need to worry about what the goyim think.
Derech HaMelechMembercantoresq:
As mw13 pointed out in my response to your post I was not weighing in on whether one should or shouldn’t use food stamps.
SJSinNYC et al:
I’m sure you are aware of the chilul Hashem being caused by our kiyum hamitzvah of Bris Milah. Many people feel we are acting in the same way we look at those who perform female circumcision and there have been times where they pushed to out-law it. Should we stop doing bris milah to prevent this chilul Hashem or do we do mitzvos even when the rest of the world looks down on us because of it?
Derech HaMelechMemberI don’t. When was the last time you walked through Harlem and someone came up to you and said “You Jews, you can’t be so reliant on government programs you need to get jobs.” New York and New Jersey are both below the median for unemployment. We make up 10% of the state of NY at 2 million Jews strong. Of that 10% how many people would you say are in kollel all day and taking benefits from the government?
Derech HaMelechMemberSacrilege:
You are right that if somehow, someway, a Jew started keeping Kosher than it will have served its purpose. But you need to differentiate between our business and Hashem’s business. We do not say that we can do something that is less than right because maybe Hashem will use it to help someone.
iyhbyu: (I keep thinking your name is im yirtzeh Hashem)
There are other restaurants that were serving the same food without that name. I recall Essex on Coney had a meatball sub which was supposed to be really good. Subsational has all kinds of subs. The only reason to make a subway is to sell the shtick of eating Subway just like the goyim have it.
Wolfish:
to quote geshmakman
I paid more than I would have at Subsantional, for 1/3 of the meat!
Obviously he is not trying to provide cheap subway prices to the Jewish community. And I’m not sure why you think it is not a problem to open a restaurant with the intention of it catering to both Jews and goyim.
Derech HaMelechMemberSilly out of towners.
Derech HaMelechMemberSister Bear:
Shemiras Einayim is a halacha:
Tur and S”A EVHa”E Siman 21-
A man needs to distance himself from women very very much.
Asur to look at a woman with intention to enjoy her looks.
Pri Megadim brought by the M”B O”C siman 75 s”k 7-
Places on the body that are normally covered like the arm etc. even looking without intention to enjoy is assur
So I’m just wondering, would you compare watching TV to smoking a cigarette? It’s assur if its actually hurting you but there’s no way to tell until after it happened.
Or does your husband only watch channel 13
Derech HaMelechMemberWolf your question was answered. Allow me to blockquote myself:
Nobody goes out of their way to specifically eat goyish spaghetti. That’s just what’s available. And even more likely- that’s just what is cheapest.
But to make a restaurant with their name just so that we can say that we can also eat at subway?
Just to let everyone know blockquote is the new black.
Geshmakman:
I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving (when I’m in America) and I know quite a number of American Jews that don’t either. Some probably don’t even know what it is.
Ooomis:
Welcome to hyperbole 101
Wolfish:
I think his point on the milk and meat thing was why do we always have to find loopholes to taste every pleasure in the world.
Derech HaMelechMemberWhat’s a groundhug?
You seem to be asking in reference to the particular grounhug named Phil mentioned in this thread.
I would venture to guess that this is the famous Dr. Phil that everyone talks about. If he brings peace between people with his psychiatry I guess he might be called a Dr. Phil the GroundHug.
Derech HaMelechMembercantoresq:
I don’t really want to put my two cents into the topic of this thread but I just wanted to point out that the first posuk you bring “b’zeias apecha tochal lechem” is not an injunction but a curse.
If someone curses you to lose all your money do you feel obligated to go through out your money or if you lose all your money you would recognize that it was a result of the curse?
The second pasuk can easily be ascribed to learning Torah as well:
The gemarah in Brachos says “ashrecha- b’olam hazeh, v’tov lach- b’olam haba”
So you will enjoy the results of doing yegiah in both worlds.
The mishna in Pe’ah says “Eilu devarim she adam achol peiroseihem ba’olam hazeh v’hakeren kayemes lo l’olam habah” In other words, this is a list of things that a person will enjoy the benefits of in this world and the next.
Yegia applies to Torah too. It’s hard work learning “zos haTorah, adam ki yamus ba’ohel- ein Torah miskayemes elah b’mi shemeimis atzmo aleha”
While the list in Peah doesn’t bring ‘working for ones food’ as one of the things on the list it does say “v’Talmud Torah kneged Kulam”
Derech HaMelechMemberThere are probably one or two mods that are also common/not-so-common posters but I don’t think that this has any affect on what they let through.
Derech HaMelechMemberThe self-righteous behavior is going both ways on this one.
Seriously, you’re hanging him out to dry over some hyperbole?
Sacrilege, have you spoken to the owner that you know his intention was getting non-kosher families to start keeping kosher and not to just turn a dollar? Do you even honestly see subway as the thing standing between a reasonably average person and kosher eating?
Wolfish et al.:
Your retort was just a straw man. Nobody goes out of their way to specifically eat goyish spaghetti. That’s just what’s available. And even more likely- that’s just what is cheapest.
The point he was trying to make and which I agree with, is that how much tavya do we have to have to go so far as to davka make a restaurant with the same NAME as the goyim? Its one thing to eat a sub, its a tasty food, fine. But to make a restaurant with their name just so that we can say that we can also eat at subway? And I think we all know that this is what their shtik was that they were trying to cash in on.
Derech HaMelechMemberzaidy78 wins the game, sorry everyone else.
Derech HaMelechMemberI’m talking about how institutions refuse to acknowledge the validity of anyone else’s view point.
My feeling here is that you mean to specifically talk about learning vs. working.
I say this because I have never heard of a Litvish institution refusing to acknowledge the validity of a Chasidishe institution or vis versa.
In fact when I spoke to my Rav about sending my children to Yeshivah he specifically told me that it doesn’t matter whether they go to a Litvishe of Chassidishe Yeshivah and that I shouldn’t worry about them feeling out of place as at this point in time both sides are mixed.
No one ever said to me ‘Sephardim are sinners- stay away from them!’ Or, ‘ Oberlanders, we don’t mix with their type’. Never heard anything about the evil Yekis or Yemenites either.
Also, what is a ‘life-goal’?
Derech HaMelechMemberSJSinNYC:
The question wasn’t aimed in general, the discussion was about the Brisker opinion on Rav Shlomo Zalman himself after his shita. But I appreciate your opinion.
What I means was there is ALWAYS more Torah to keep, its called Spiritual Growth. Whatever path that you are on, there is always more room to grow in your avodah, whether it be learning with more hasmoda, strengthening your dveikus, strengthening your shemiras Shabbos, taking on chumros. Therefor a persons observance can ONLY be in degrees as once you keep one mitzvah in the Torah l’shem mitzvah you are an observant Jew.
