Realization that you really can be better than you were and commitment to do what you know is the right thing. Focus on what you need to be doing now and one day sometime down the line you will wake up one day and realize how its been so long since the last time you even thought about those things.

in reply to: staying "pure" #783302

I once kept having trouble getting certain thoughts about something I had used to do out of my head. They would pop up at the most random times. I asked one of my rebbeim about it and he told me it was because I still felt an attachment to it.

Time has proven him right. At the time I was still shaky in my decision to not do that particular thing, but once my decision solidified and the nisayon passed, I moved on and everything related to it left my mind. I can still actively recall those things if I want, but its not there hovering in the back of my mind all the time.

My advice is to commit to your present path and let go of the past. Eventually, you will lose your connection to it and become a different person. The person you want to be.

I needed to buy a rolling pin but I couldn’t find them in the aisles of the supermarket and I wasn’t sure what they are called in Hebrew. So I went up to the help counter and asked said “…??? ???? ?????” and I made rolling back and forth motions.

I couldn’t figure out why she kept questioning me “?????????”.

Finally, I called my wife, who doesn’t learn gemarah and solved the problem.

On the other hand, it says that no one knew who this guy was so that might include her sister. So I think the real answer is that she killed her sister because she was a psychopath totally unrelated to the guy.

Unless, she killed her sister so that there would be another funeral and maybe the guy would come again. I could totally commiserate with that. That’s how I met my own wife actually.

    From the link:

He stopped near the seat of the Burshtein Rebbe Shlita, who attempted to scare the cat away, but it refused, and …It remained until after Kedusha, after which it exited the Shul.

The cat didn’t stay until after aleinu??? That is surprising! Even cats are trying to get out early because of “work” these days! Ah shande!

What I don’t understand is, you can’t move around during kedusha, so why would the Rebbe try to get it to move?

Do a search on Buckingham Palace.

I have serious doubts that the guards would let just anyone in to search the palace.

in reply to: Magazines in host's house #763294

I was a 13 and 14 year old boy once (at two distinct points in my life as it happens to be). If I were you I would either approach the owners of the magazine (parents or daughter) and explain as nicely as possible that these magazines DO represent an influence whose influence I would rather minimize on my pubescent children. Especially at this age where hormones have only recently come into play and can be quite confusing, you can’t be sure yet where your children stand on these issues.

I’m a little unclear why “mentchlichkeit” is taking priority over what can potentially be devastating spiritually negative influences. If there is room to to have both, then great. But if not, this can potentially have very bad consequences and from my own experience I would give it major priority.

I understand that the daughter has anger issues, I have a sister-in-law in a similar situation as this girl. But I don’t think it is proper to tip-toe around her at the expense of the children.

Be courteous, but stand up for your children. You’re the only one who can.

and fanatics put in the whole door

Yeah, our minhag was to scrape off some woof from the front and back doors of the house but my parents eventually discontinued that minhag and switched to just the key for three reasons:

1)People kept getting splinters on their tongues.

2)They were afraid of the expense of buying new doors every 10 years

3)The back door was switched to a metal one during some remodeling and it’s harder to back metal chips into the challah.

It’s good for me that they switched as well, since now in E”Y I also only have a metal door.

    On a less serious note:

When do you eat the challah, at the night seudah or the morning one?

Do you make one challah, two or even three?

in reply to: # of jews #762063

Speaking of the number of Jews. I noticed that whenever there is an article about Chareidim the same picture with the same 5 chasidim goes up next to the article.

Bloomberg is represented by a picture of himself

Raymond Kelly is represented by a picture of himself

Obama is represented by a picture of himself.

So there is clearly a pattern whereby the pictures represent the actual people who are being discussed in the article.

So I ask you, my fellow CR members:

Who are these 5 Chareidim who seem to be involved in anything and everything Chareidi?

If it’s not a zionist thing then why are they generaly the ones to wear it?

Perhaps your questions should be directed to Zionist World News. I imagine that the answer lies somewhere alongside what double standard and hello99 said.

in reply to: Techeiles 🔵❎🐌☑️🐟 #1057416

I don’t think he said that wearing techeiles is a zionist thing, but that generally they are the ones to wear it.

The exceptions that I know of are Breslov and I guess Radziners.

Help! is there any nice place to go and get … around flatbush/midwood area?

Not really. Brooklyn isn’t really known for having a kosher store for anything you can think of since there just aren’t as many Jews in Brooklyn as out of it.

Try someplace out of town like Winnipeg, Canada.

    Do you charge friends?

$8.35/ hour to be friends with me. I like to think I’m a bit over priced, but that you get what your money’d worth. Which in todays economy when friends can get very expensive, is a very important thing.

I also have month passes. Be friends with me an entire month for only $7.99 an hour!

    cherrybim:

It seems that this minhag is still followed.

Not so much anymore. I had a rebbe who, when he went to the Mir they made him trim down his sideburns because they went past the bone.

Nowadays there are plenty of Mirs with beards.

    yankdownunder:

but the Mustache needs to be trim.

This is like the Arizal who says you can trim your mustache as much as it interfere’s with eating, because swallowing the hair is a sakana.

    walton157:

I don’t understand the idea 100% but there is some type of kabbalistic correlation between hair growth and activity.

    YitzchokYisrael:

Yeah, I think that’s the name of the sefer too. I’ve vaguely heard something about conduits for bracha, but I don’t really understand any of this. Alot of people are also makpid not to let hair from the beard that falls out, get thrown away. Usually they put it in a sefer.

in reply to: beard types and lengths in Judiasm #1088891

I’ve definitely read that the beard is associated with the 13 midos of rachamim.

There’s a really thick sefer on beards. I never opened it, and I don’t have access to it. But I’m sure it explains everything there.

I don’t know the whole story with the Ramchal at all. I was just putting out what I heard.

jewishness: Why does something kabbalistic sound ‘shady’?

cherrybim: because that was the minhag and since following minhagei kabballah is also not halacha it seems they opted to not be poresh from the klal.

in reply to: chillul Hashem #755789

The Chinuch in mitzvah ??”? and the Rambam in ‘??’ ????? ????? ?’ ? both say that someone who is mefursom in Torah and maasim tovim that does something that the ????? look down on that is chilul Hashem.

As opposed to this they say if someone is oiver an aveirah in front of ten members of the klal then this is also a chilul Hashem.

So we see a difference between what is called a chilul Hashem in front of the klal and what is chilul Hashem in front of anyone.

I would opine that the world does look up to all of us baalei maasim tovim and that this can be an issue.

However, the Rambam doesn’t bring any cases of where a person has the oppotunity to do a mitzvah but he will be looked down upon for doing it. It seems to me that in the case of a mitzvah if a person can do it without chilul Hashem this is preferable, but if it comes down to it, it is better for him to do the mitzvah rather than abstain.

    Chardal?

in reply to: Baby Boy Bigger Brocho than Girl #769379

The Gemarah in Berachos 17a asks on the posuk in Yishaya 32:9:

    …???? ??????…???? ?????

Why are woman zocheh to be called “?????? (complacent)” and “?????(confident)”?

The Gemarah in Sota 21a after a short discussion about how Torah protects a person while he is learning, wonders about women who aren’t commanded to learn Torah.

In both cases the gemarah comes to the conclusion that women’s zchus in Torah comes from sending their boys to cheider and their husbands to the beis midrash.

What comes out then is that a married woman can increase her zchus in Torah by having more boys. Therefore, having boys is – in this respect more beneficial for the mother than the father.

Also, I’m not a Darshan but I’d point out that in both cases the Gemarah lists ‘sending their sons to cheider’ before ‘sending their husbands to beis midrash’. Maybe there is even a bigger zchus from the sons than from the husband.

in reply to: beard types and lengths in Judiasm #1088883

I’ve heard, (although I haven’t seen this inside) that keeping a trim beard versus not trimming the beard is a machlokes between the Arizal and the Ramchal. The Arizal holds not to touch it at all and the Ramchal says that there just needs to be a beard even if it is trim. Again, I can’t vouch for this veracity of these statements, but it is what I’ve heard.

in reply to: Need help with kavana #951721

Before davening spend a few minutes contemplating who you are davening to.

Learn the translation of the words, so that you understand what you are saying as you say it.

In the first bracha of Shemonah Esrei, think about the translation of each word before you say it. Especially with Hashem’s names. Having kavanah extra kavanah in the first bracha of Shemoneh Esrei goes a long way towards elevating the level of kavanah in the rest of Shemoneh Esrei.
