” It also reflects how little many[sic]of our ilk reject science or other higher learning”

So, finally Rebdoniel’s true agenda is out there for all to see:Those of us who blindly follow our gedolim and the derech halimud that has always existed, are “shtetle yidden” who know nothing of science(and, accordingly, can’t learn)and don’t understand higher learning – so how can we criticize the cronys at his modern institutions who offer us an enlightened perspective on how men and women in today’s modern age should learn (together). What a pathetic joke. And sorry, most of us are not of your ilk.

By the way, I happen to have attended one of the the nations top three law schools and give a nightly daf yomi shiur. I can assure you I dont recall anything of importance that I learned in law school (much less in college) but the words of my rebbaim still ring loud and clear. And none of those words sound anything like Linzer’s.

Benign and Feminist: If you each would have taken the time to actually listen to Linzer’s daf yomi shiur you would quickly see that it is not his description of anatomy that is particularly objectionable.Rather, he repeatedly uses a three letter word (as a verb)which has never before been heard inside the walls of a bais medresh. Moreover, he uses the word deliberately and with great gusto, apparently proud of his liberated mind and audience.I don’t see how anyone can not view him as a menuval. Additionaly,he has no problem describing his view of a Tosfos as being “far feched” and then just proceeding on with his shiur.I started feeling ill after listening to about a half an hour of him.

For those interested in a facinating, lomdishe discussion of the various shittos cited in this thread( together with halachos pertaining to yayin and shikrus in other contexts)may i recommend a piece contained in Rav yitzchk Mirsky’s sefer HAGYONAI HALACHA chailek shaini entitled “ad d’lo yadah”

I found it interesting that the sugya of tumas avodah zarah was learned as the daf yomi on nittel nacht(and the following day).As many of you may know, it is a particularly difficult two blatt and it was wonderful to have 2 days off to prepare it properly. And I was pleased that everyone came to the shiur.( i know its not actually avodah zorah, but neverthelesss….)

uneeq- that is exactly why i chose blue as my example it is obviously a rookie’s scotch which no respectable drinker would go near. ( by the way does anyone know if there is anywhere you can still find balvinie 15? they seem to have stopped production.)

to those who are so sure that putting ones name on a building is wrong: while this may seem logical, the fact is many pokim state that one should allow his name to be placed on a donated item so that others will do the same.

On the contrary, you are the perfect person to adress the question. here is the analogy: all women have a weak spot for jewlery . The question is should she spend $40,000.00 on a watch even if she can afford it or try to live with a $5,000 watch … which can certaily be beautiful.Same with scotch. You know that after reaching $100 a bottle the taste difference becomes neglible(IMHO)and its really just a status symbol( are those guys who are putting out bottles of J.Walker blue at a kiddush reallly doing so to be mehana the oilem or for their own kovod?) So really, isn’t buying $350 bottles sort of the same thing as buying absurdly expensive jewlery?

I always wondered whether there might be an issur for women to wear super luxury items on Shabbos. While we allow women to wear jewlery nowdays( a seperate discussion) nevertheless we know that an “ir shel zahav” which was made from so much gold that chazal determined that its purpose was primarily to flaunt one’s wealth rather than to look enhance one’s appearance is aussur.Could a 40,000.00 watch fall under the same issur?

On the other hand , men should remember that they are required to buy jewlery for their wives in line with their means, particularly before each yom tov.

Booz, question for you:I was recently in a liquor store and a young kid dropped about $2500 on the finest scotches and whisky. He proudly stated that only the best was good enough when his friends came over to him for shabbos.(he also rolled his eyes when he saw me buying a Glenlivet 15 year for a mere 50 bucks). Do you agree that this is as bad as the $40,000.00 watch?(at least you get to keep the watch)

Here is a twist. my wife recently called the head of a very well known seminary to ask about a girl who just attended the seminary. She refused to answer any questions because she had discovered that a number of girls had started having people call her to find out what she was saying about them! So, my wife would have to “prove” that she was actually asking on behalf of my son. I really don’t blame her at all but my wife was dumbfouded. The irony of it all was that i was actually a talmud of her rosh yeshiva husband and ate shalush suodos at their house every week for a year. Anyway while my wife didnt call her back we found out enogh fantastic stuff about the girl from a dozen other people so when my son gets out of the freezer….

Rav Elyashiv zt’l issued a very specific p’sak several years ago stating that smoking was no longer a davar h’shava l’chol odom and, therefore, was not permitted on yom tov.

Interestingly the Aruch Hashulchan goes on about the benefits of smoking , how many people (in those days) needed to smoke in order to aid digestion, and concludes that smoking on yom tov is allowed. But that was 100 years ago and given what we now know about smoking as well as the drastic shift in society’s view of smoking the Aruch Hashulchan obviously can no longer be relied upon.

I really dont know how people can ignore Rav Elyashiv’s psak…. givin that absent the heter of ochel nefesh ,smoking on yom tov is an issur d’oraisa

sam2: 1.The Rambam defines an eved canani as one who has left the status of being a goy but has not yet reached the status of kdushas yisroal.Accordingly, any discussion of tevi is not on point.

2.With respect to the Lubavich minhag not to sleep in the succah their reasoning is a bit different(and perhaps even more krum) than simply “it is to holy to sleep in”. The argument,as I undertand it, is that since we can not percieve the Shichina when sleeping in the succah, as the Mittlle Rebbe apparently did, we are all mitzta’ar from the recognition of our lowly level which in turn patters us from sleeping in the succah.

I recall like it was yesterday the comment some ritzy girl made when we left her house and she saw my (parents’)Reliant K mini stationwagon (this was in 1984):”oh you have a suburban houswife’s car” Ouch. Thats why my kids now get to go out in my Infinity!
