    Haleivi,

The reason she would have been ????? would either be because of a ???? to ????? ???? or from a ???? of ???? ??? ???? (as per the two gemaras I quoted). Otherwise, as ???? ??? ??? ???? ????, she would be, (and, in fact is) ?????.

Why would they be patur, I don’t understand. A mezuza is a din in the cheftza (house) not the gavra (woman)

    The ???? in two places, .?????? ?? and :???? ?? has a ??? ????? that they should be ??????. The ???? does not answer that it’s a ??? in the ????.

I do not understand this question. It is a Mishna in Berachos 20 that clearly says they are chayav in mezuzah.

    Correct.

This Halacha is also brought down clearly in Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah 291-3, as well in Rambam mezuzah 5 -10.

Also correct, but that doesn’t mean no rishon holds differently (which is highly unlikely anyhow, since he would have to find a diyuk in a different mishna, which argues on the one you mentioned from Berachos, and pasken like it).

    What’s the mitzvah of mezuza?

To kiss it as you walk thru the door?

To attach it to the doorway.

    The ???? in .?????? ?? says they are ??????, but there was a ??? ????? that ????? should be compared to ????? ???? and they should be ??????. The ???? rejects this ??? ????? based on the ???? of ???? ???? ????? which the ???? holds applies to ?????, and ???? ??? ???. The .???? ??? ?? says that the ???? of ???? ???? ????? applies to ????? ????. This is asked as a ???? by ‘???, whose answer would render women ??????. It’s not impossible that a different ????? answers the ???? differently and holds that they are ??????.

I am not aware of any ????? who actually holds this way, though.

    SJS,

I do believe that the movement is to increase awareness because it was indeed somewhat lacking. I was also not taught about it formally in yeshiva but my rebbeim often told holocaust stories (even more so in camp), and as an avid reader of frum literature, (the CIS holocaust diaries series comes to mind) I was very exposed to holocaust stories and themes. One of my rebbeim is a survivor, and we heard much from him.

    SJS,

Your points are, of course, valid. “Charaidim/right wing orthodox” have been printing, discussing, and educating about the holocaust since its occurrence. A recent program has been developed for holocaust studies within the curriculum of yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs. A major component of pre – Tisha B’av programming in the summer camps has been focusing on the holocaust.

The issue under discussion is merely about setting aside a specific day for its commemoration.

I don’t believe the problem is with her understanding; it’s with her accepting.

Would her parents have an easier time convincing her to put them away before your next visit?

Would it be easier to approach her well in advance, when it would seem more abstract?

    Good luck.

But don’t we also observe mourning during sefirah on the national level in addition to Tishah BeAv, and it also falls out during Nissan?

I’ve never seen this issue addressed, but two distinctions come to mind.

    1) The mourning of sefirah is not a single day, it’s drawn out over a long period.

    2) The tragedy which we commemorate is different than that of the churban; it’s the tragedy of the Torah lost upon the death of R’ Akiva’s talmidim.

It’s also likely that chachamim who instituted the mourning during sefirah understood that tragedy to be independent of the churban, whereas the other tragedies, as R’ Moshe writes, are an extension of the churban.

The idea that Nissan is a time of happiness would seem to be a support for those who keep the halachos of mourning after Rosh Chodesh.

    cherrybim,

The source I quoted has R’ Moshe being machmir on music during the year, but acknowledging that there are those who are meikil. He states clearly, though, that it’s assur during sefirah, so I’m not sure why it would be a tzorich iyun.

If you could please do me a favor, ask your rav if R’ Moshe’s heter because of nervousness is written in a teshuvah or something heard al peh. (I’m not asking you to question the veracity of what your rav said, c”v, but it’s easier to apply the heter to a specific situation if one could see the wording.)

My take on it is this – the Shoah is in a category of tragedy all by itself.

For a different take on this, take a look at the Artscroll Kinnos on #25 (the one I mentioned earlier) where the author explains, in better words than I ever could, how all tragedies which r”l befall Klal Yisroel are actually an outgrowth of the churban habayis.

The very broad nature of the tragedy, R’ Moshe writes in the teshuva which I mentioned, is an indication that it is a product of our being in golus.

  • 1-Why do some (percentage? I don’t have statistics, just know it’s quite a few) shuls not say kinnos for the Holocaust on tisha b’av?
  • The story is told about the Bobover Rebbe Zt”l that he felt that anyone in our dor is unworthy of composing a kinnah, until he saw in a sefer that anyone can. Possibly, some gedolim agree with his initial thought.

In Halichos Shlomo (in the section on Tisha B’av, I don’t have it in front of me for a precise citation), it is described how and why one year R’ Shlomo Zalman said R’ Weissmandl’s kinnah, but that the practice was discontinued.

Also, Rav Moshe (here) is discussing live music, not taped.

The words you quoted from R’ Moshe were badly botched up by OCR. The actual words, “??”? ????? ?? ???? ???? ????? ???? ??? ???? ??? ????” would imply that recorded instrumental music is ????. (I’m assuming that the radio he refers to was playing recorded music, or that even if it was live, being heard over the radio would have the same ??? as recorded music.

To bring a source for what all here have referred to, that we commemorate all of Klal Yisrael’s tragedies on Tisha B’av, in Kinah 25 (?? ??? ???? ???), the paytan writes, about the 11th century European tragedies, “??? ??? ?????? ???? ??? ??????”; in other words, we don’t add our own day of public mourning.

See ????? ??? ??”? ?’ ?”? ?”? for an explanation of how this is not contradicted by the fact that certain communities did, in fact, observe days of mourning in commemoration of tragedies which befell them.

Rav Moshe permitted any type of music in spite of the ban after the Churban since we need it in today’s times because of our nervousness, like a r’fuah. Perhaps the same heter applies for s’fira.

Do you have a source for that?

In ??”? ?’ ??”?, he is ????? on instrumental music during the year, and writes that even according to the ??????, it’s ???? during ?????.

Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach permitted classical music during sefira.

R’ Shlomo Zalman’s opinion is recorded in Halichos Shlomo, Moadim, 11th perek, 14. See however, Orchos Halacha 54, which clarifies that this heter should only be utilized in case of need.

The overall approach of R’ Shlomo Zalman zt”l seems to be that what determines whether music is permissible during sefirah is not whether it is instumental or vocal, but rather, the type of mood attached to it. Any music, even vocal, would seem to be prohibited if it’s the type associated with dancing. (I hope this answers StuffedCabbage’s question.)

Your rov picks and chooses the psakim he likes from various poskim.

He would listen to nothing else that Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach would have to say about many other things.

Do you know his rav and all of his psakim to make such a negative comment?

I found this. If you want my source, Google the sentence which begins The 2010 Statistical Abstract, issued….

How many Jews are there in New York?

1,618,000.

The 2010 Statistical Abstract, issued by the US Census Bureau, reports that New York’s Jewish population comprises 1,618,000 people, which represents 8.4% of the state’s population. New York is the state with the highest Jewish population in the US; nearly a quarter of the all Jews in the country are New York residents.

This fact is verified on : May 7, 2010. All facts are verified every 6 month after the last modification.

I checked the cRc’s site. Their Passover guide is downloadable.

Interestingly, no specific mention is made of paper towels; their chart for paper products says that paper products are acceptable, and then specifies:

Including bags, napkins, plates,

wax paper

with hot foods unless specially

certified for Pesach

(The OU’s chart makes no such condition on paper plates.)

Why don’t you call or email the OU and get an informed answer, rather than relying on halachic guidance from people you don’t know?

Why is the OU considered someone Imaofthree knows more than R’ Blumenkrantz?

If what you meant is not to rely on CR people, I agree; anything offered here should be independently verified. There’s nothing wrong, though, with asking the question as a way of hearing ideas.

First of all, many are of the opinion that the kashrus is indeed better. Second, it’s not so pashut that machine matzos are baked “l’shem matzas mitzvah” (IOW that turning on the machine is considered the act of baking).

No, it would be foolish to say that it’s impossible to bake hand matzah that’s not chametz, but not foolish to say that today’s machine matzah is superior to the hand matzah available today.

Shlishi,

18 minute (machine) matzah means the machines are stopped and cleaned every 18 minutes, which is not relevant to when the shmirah started on the wheat.
