At most, the temperature may increase three or more degrees.

But not more than more than three degrees.

It’s an amazing thing. We have so many problems,

    1) Fathers being banned from graduations

    2) Kids not being allowed to socialize with opposite gender

    3) Too much contact with opposite gender

    4) Kids not being allowed to socialize with same gender

    5) No guidance councilors (at least not ones who can keep a secret)

    6) Parents and teachers who are too restrictive

    7) Parents and teachers who are not restrictive enough

    8) No classes in hashkafa

    9) No classes in Sefer Hachinuch

10)Everyone expected to become Roshei Yeshivos (girls too?)

11)Being told what to do by the previous dor

    12)Being taught wrongly

13)Teachers who misrepresent the obligation of a husband to support his wife as optional

    13)Being emotionally suffocated

    14)Stuffing kids in a box

    15)Adults who are OFF

    16)Blameworthy schools

    17)Insistence on rule following

    18)No fun allowed

    19)No questions allowed

    20)An unrealistic view of childhood

    21)Studying Torah

    22)Taking care of babies

and yet, so many of our children are not off the derech.

    It’s unexplainable!

the problem is that your “dor” is constantly telling our “dor” what to do.

    It’s called chinuch.

It is probably because of whatever you would like changed in our communities.

That way, you can have a moral imperative to force your changes on everyone.

    Precisely!

To paraphrase the earlier posters (I will now drip sarcasm), we should permit our youth do do every issur imaginable; once there is no derech, they can’t go off of it!

Even if it’s min haTorah, it might be an asei (Ramba”m) in which case there might not be ta’am k’ikar. See Kehillos Yaakov Chullin 5 (newer edition) for a discussion on this topic; IIRC, he proves as HaleiVi asserts that live meat is not able to be maflit from the fact that we don’t asser a tavshil in which a person stuck his finger.

Go through the coffee room, you’ll find all kinds of interesting theories.

One poster thinks it’s because fathers sometimes don’t attend their daughters’ graduations.

    men banned from girls graduations

Another poster on the same thread thinks it’s because we don’t let boys and girls socialize enough.

Das yochid you say there is a potential tznius issue here. I know the fathers quite well. None of them are the type of people that you are insinuating.

I’m not insinuating anything about anyone; I wouldn’t want to go to a girls’ graduation myself (although I agree with Health that under certain circumstances it might be necessary).

And my main point was that your argument, that it’s okay for men to attend because it’s not untznius for a father to see his daughter’s graduation, is fallacious.

Why are we banning men from just HS graduations? Let’s prohibit them from visiting their daughters on visiting days in sleep away camps as well!!!

Since when do men sit through girls’ and women’s speeches on visiting day?

why is it ok to be here on the ywn cr – after all we are men and women talking to each other. true we are anonymous – for the most part anyway. some posters do know who others are. also we generally do know which posters are male and female. so this might be considered a breach of tznius as well. no?

This is a recurring point in the CR, but you failed to mention the main difference; here you can’t see the other person, nor do you even know what they look like.

B-Whether it’s classified as meat or not has no relevance to this shailah because either way it’s not kosher(no split hooves and in most cases, not a vegetable)

    Not a b’heimah.

in light of the fact that chamirah sakantah meisurah?

Maybe that’s precisely why there’s no issur.

Many digital-panel air conditioners (e.g. Friedrich) have built-in timers that let you program on and off times over the course of 24 hours.

Unless I misunderstand your needs, this ought to suffice for Shabbos, no?

yes – they made it into one but i see nothing un- tznius about a father seeing his daughter gradutate.

I doubt the school does either, but your next sentence indicates that you do understand where there could be a potential tznius issue. A school has a right to be concerned about it. They also have a right not to be. They even have a right to change their minds.

My personal minhag each night is to count twice (I say the bracha only once.). I say HaYom Yom Echad LaOmer. HaYom Yom Echad BaOmer. I know that, in truth, one is yotzei either way, but for two extra seconds each night, why not be yotzai both shitos?

I do the same, based on a recommendation I once heard from a certain rov. I wonder, since as you mentioned, you’re yotzei either way, if there’s really a point. Isn’t it comparable to R’ Chaim’s esrog shailah (if you have a m’hudar with a shailah on the yichus and a m’yuchas which is not so nice, take the nicer one first, since once you’re yotzei, you can’t add hiddur.)?

Oomis, I think you are defining kedusha as anything which you agree with. Many people, though, specifically use the term to refer to separation from ta’avos, and more specifically, for tznius/gender separation issues.

Does it allow the owner to override ConEd? So if ConEd turns it off, can you turn it back on, or must you wait for ConEd to allow you to?

You can turn it back, but it’s a problem for Shabbos and Yom Tov.

    chaplaintzvi,

Until they changed the rule about fathers at graduation, did the school believe in mixed socializing as you do?

I don’t have any statistics on who goes “off the derech” more, those who engage in mixed socializing or those who don’t (and I doubt you do either, and your anecdotal experience is not evidence) but the point is really not relevant. The solution to the problem of kids going off the derech is NOT to change our derech!

    DerechHamelech,

That’s what I thought, but that point was seemingly made without sarcasm. I reread it, and now I see how you were using sarcasm for that part as well.

Had you not meant your point about kedusha being in moderation sarcastically, I would have asked you how you understood the S.A.’s use of the term “me’od me’od” when referring to separation of men and women.

I haven’t used it, but I looked at their site. They claim they plan on making money by charging a transaction fee to businesses, but will keep personal transactions free. There’s a two week waiting period until you get your money, so they make money on interest, although it says that they are not trying to make money on the float (whatever that means – if they weren’t trying to make money, they would send it immediately!).

They are trying to save energy to prevent a blackout, so they wouldn’t want to turn it back on.

they can send me all their money, jewelry, cars, etc. they won’t be needing them.

Why would they waste their time on that, since you wouldn’t need it either? They could use their time much more wisely by removing their furniture tags!

The downside is the following clause:

Smart thermostats also allow Con Edison to remotely adjust the amount of electricity your central air-conditioning system uses to help reduce the demand for energy. A signal similar to a pager and/or beeper will communicate with your central air-conditioning thermostat and will cycle your unit’s compressor on and off to reduce demand on our electric system.

That means they can shut off your A/C whenever they want. You wouldn’t want that to happen on Shabbos, and imagine if they shut it off at the beginning of a three day yom tov!

No they’re not. You just have to read it with the right inflection. Try using “sarcasm” while reading all four paragraphs.

I went to a very frum High School in Brooklyn in the seventies. Loads of girls got nose jobs during their school years, and the Hanhala didnt blink. Nor did any of those girls go Off The Derech.

That just shows that getting a nose job only makes some girls go off the derech. ?

Seriously, it is a real issue, and someone must certainly ask a shaila before doing it, and not fall into the trap of saying “it must be okay because other people do it”.

    ???????????????????????????

There are many people in need of jobs iin todays market. Perhaps they should look into nose jobs :<)
