Too busy playing in the snow, beacon.
CuriousMemberThis is for whoever is too slow to duck in time (or to the mod who’s deleting my posts). Mod42 gets a free pass, lest he be hit again.

CuriousMemberValid quesiton areivim, my apologies for not posting the source – I should have.
It’s actually written on the last page of the book “Chofetz Chaim, A Daily Companion”, part of the shidduch supplement written by R’ Moshe Mordchai Lowy (Agudas Yisroel of Toronto) and Rav Hillel Zaks.
CuriousMemberMust be the flamingos, squeak

the deleted question that was posed above is a classic example of a potential invasion of privacy. YW Moderator-72
CuriousMemberYou mean we can stop blaming Joseph?
CuriousMembermoish – Why would I want to put myself in harm’s way? You’re asking for a spear, no less.
squeak – I’d love to see your artwork.
asdf – I’ll put something together for you…
CuriousMemberHaha, I’m too busy fighting on the weather thread to deal with this fight… 🙂
CuriousMembermoish, you feel left out? This is for you:

'VMMV'CuriousMemberareivim – there was no element of excitement there. Did you notice the 😉 at the end of my sentence? Besides, if my post would’ve been serious I wouldn’t have said that jetskiing is a good first date. I don’t think that would fly anywhere.
CuriousMemberI hope that wasn’t directed to me, moish
CuriousMemberHey, stop complaining, you’re lucky I kept you in the black jacket and pants!
CuriousMemberareivim – I clearly said I want a partner for life, not for extracurricular. Go back and read my post. Now are we clear? Good. And yes, I think jetskiing would be a great first date 😉
Besides, how can you boast of being shadchan with your zero success rate, thus far?
CuriousMemberat least you admit to being slow 🙂
CuriousMemberGlad you enjoyed, 42! 🙂
CuriousMemberand if you’re gonna go by that mitzvah you gotta drop every unhealthy thing you ever ingest in your life. including soda and fried food. how many people are willing to do that? not many.
You have a good argument there moish. If you look at trends, however, public awareness with regard to the ill effects of smoking have been very well published in the previous years. Presently, obesity is the hot topic being tackled and you’l be seeing it publicized more and more. Just think about the proposed soda tax, laws requiring fast food restaurants to list the nutritional values (or lack thereof), etc.
and realistically speaking, how many people keep all the mitzvos anyway? i know i don’t. everyone has a few that are extra hard. (or more than just a few)
True, but you stil have to make an effort, can’t completely ignore it 🙂
I’ve had this discussion many times over, minus the religious aspect, with non-Jewish kids. It’s hard for kids to think long-term and really give it a serious thought when we’re talking about the dangers 20-30 years down the line.
CuriousMembersqueak – then I guess something would be wrong with my computer too. Don’t be so quick to accept blame (and don’t allow your computer to carry the blame) for missing posts.

This is for Mod42: ...gotcha! yahahahaha!!CuriousMember42 – I think you’ve outdone me.
You are definitely getting the first snowball in the face!!!
CuriousMemberOne may not request shidduch information from a known enemy of the person in question. One may not even request info from someone who is known to have had a disagreement with the person in question. This is often very tempting as the questioner feels they will get “the inside scoop”. Avoid this!
CuriousMemberneed a partner for extracurricular?
I need a partner for life, not for extracurricular. 🙂
Though yes I do manage to have a grand time when I go on vacation. And even when I’m not on vacation I can stir up fun one day or half-day trips. Just need to have another fun-loving friend.
CuriousMemberit’s not guaranteed that smoking hurts anyone. if you’re meant to die, you’ll die anyway, right? so what does smoking have to do with anything?
It is guaranteeed that smoking damages your lungs, however the age at which the smoker will feel its effects, and what effects they will experience is variable. The example you cited of your aunt and uncle is a random situation. Because one smoker lived longer than their health-conscious partner, means nothing in the big picture. There have been numerous large-scale controlled studies comparing the health effects of smokers and non-smokers and the results are clearly obvious that smoking is harmful!
With regard to the “you will die when you are meant to”, I am no rabbi but I do think it plays into responsibility. Do you want to be responsible as the cause of your own death, or would you prefer The One Above arrange it as He sees fit. At the same time, perhaps fulfilling the mitzvah of “Unishmartem meod linafshoseichem” will give the merits for a longer and healthier life than pre-ordained.
CuriousMemberListen to shiurim on self-improvement and try to implement the suggestions…
CuriousMembersqueak – I can’t see your hand….
I think the snowball fight will have to wait till the kids (aka asdf & qwerty) come on tonight.
CuriousMemberditto to the above. Who do we blame, Joseph or the moderstors?
CuriousMembernone.

CuriousMemberamichai – just go ahead and start one. If the mods are in a good mood they’ll approve it, otherwise try your luck another time.
CuriousMemberRazzles do not need to be chewed!! But yes, the milchig version is far better.
I was just trying to solve her “being in a state of treifness” dilemma.
CuriousMembernossond – it sounds better coming from the girl though…
Cuz otherwise we could go back to cite the the contract that you signed under the chuppah, aka the kesubah.
January 20, 2009 4:58 am at 4:58 am in reply to: Most Common Surname Among Torah Observant Jews #828925CuriousMembermoish – you first version was impossible to pronounce.
asdf – how do you know har nof area?
CuriousMemberames – on the latter point you mentioned, you might be guy-less. In principle it sounds good, in reality…
CuriousMemberHow about keep all extra characters out of your post, that will be your sig, ok?
CuriousMemberdunno – kayaking, canoeing, jetskiing, speed boating, swimming, snorkeling, running on the boardwalk, biking, spa, bowling, eat out… Is that enough?
CuriousMemberAny of you have been to the BODIES exhibit?
I saw it in Manhattan several years back but I think it’s still around there, and it may have travelled through the US in the interim. I think if any of you would have seen a real set of scarred and destroyed lungs, you would think twice before picking up that cigarette. Or take a visit to any pulmonary unit to see 50 year old guys stuck on oxygen for life…
CuriousMemberJust eat the pareve razzle, all problems solved.
January 20, 2009 4:26 am at 4:26 am in reply to: Shidduch Crisis, Daas Torah and Hishtadlos #634646CuriousMemberyros – why didn’t you tell me that when I was 19? Would’ve saved me lots of time…
Then again, I don’t for a second regret any of my dating experiences thus far. The One Above made me meet the guys I did for a specific reason… There’s something to learn from each and every one.
CuriousMemberjoseph, sorry you’re too slow… 😉
CuriousMember42 – you better not!!! 🙂
CuriousMemberIf you can’t find the humor, never mind…
January 19, 2009 11:13 pm at 11:13 pm in reply to: Shidduch Crisis, Daas Torah and Hishtadlos #634638CuriousMemberMost of us have parents, B”H.
Many of us have relatives who have experience/insight in this parsha.
how could you expect a woman in her late teens to be able to know the first thing about dating?
It’s actually this group of women in their “late teens” that do have access to their HS or sem teachers. It’s more of an issue for those who are several years out and do not keep up with their teachers.
CuriousMemberLOL!
CuriousMemberHere’s from a CR female.
Dvar Torah I heard over Shabbos. I believe it was from a chassidish Rebbe, but I’ll have to double check who exactly says this.
Where in this past week’s parsha is there a reference to the present day situation of huband in kollel and wife supporting?
“Vchol ben hayilod hayiorah tashlichuhu, v’chal habas t’chayun.”
The “ben” – male is thrown to the “yeohr” = we know that torah = ohr.
The “bas” – wife, tchayun = will provide the sustenance and livelihiood.
Enjoy 🙂
CuriousMemberI actually prefer the personal convos, for simple reason that the “heated discussions” look more like bashing attacks. I’d prefer to stay respectful and friendly…
If we could do respectful discussions, that would be great, but very unlikely given the anonymity of the CR.
CuriousMemberI’m humbled. 🙂
CuriousMembersorry asdf, even moish agrees.
CuriousMemberSale is still on till Monday night.
CuriousMemberA Warsaw businessman came to the Chofetz Chaim with a list of seforim he wished to purchase from him. The Chofetz Chaim noticed that the man ordered all of the Chofetz Chaim’s seforim, except for the one on hilchos lashon harah. The businessman explained that in his line of work it would be impossible not to hear and speak lashon hara.
To which the Chofetz Chaim replied that he discussed this issue with R’ Yisroel Salanter and R’ Yisroel said it’s worthwhile to read the sefer on lashon hara if only to make the reader sigh when he learns it.
CuriousMemberSalsa – keep calling. Many of them are super busy.
should i feel like a nudge and nebach case???? Never! You are none of the above and don’t ever let yourself feel that way!
On behalf of asdfghjkl – Welcome to the CR!
