In the 1950s our family went to a hotel every Pesach. Why? because my grandparents didn’t have the room to host the entire family in their 3 room Brooklyn apartment. In those days there were no special concerts and events, just sedarim, food, shul and simple sports in the country.
By 1960 my grandparents would come to my parent’s large home in CT and we never went to a hotel again.
Our home is quite large (17 rooms) and has many amenities of the hotels: separate Pesach kitchen, swimming pool, tennis and bb courts, hot tub, recreation room and home theatre and acreage. Our relatives love coming to our hotel for Pesach.

Ex-CTLawyerParticipantSince there will be a chasunah (chupah and luncheon for 85) at our house in the next 2 weeks, most cleaning can not start until after that.
B”H we have a separate Pesach kitchen upstairs along with 6 other rooms that are not in use most of the year.l Those rooms have been cleaned. Pesach shopping has begun and the freezers and refrigerators upstairs are starting to fill with Pesach items. No guests will be allowed upstairs until the whole house is Pesachdicke…it has its own entrance and will be kept locked.
This Sunday, we’ll clean the studio over the garage, as well as the garage bays themselves. They also will be locked until the house is cleaned. Unlike Yuntif, no guests will be staying at the house for the chasunah…we’ll put them up next door at my MIL’s. She doesn’t clean for Pesach, she sells everything and just moves into our house. We’re hoping this year she’ll agree to stay on permanently.

regarding your references to Mexicans……..
“They aren’t shooting anyone…..
Of course they should come here legally, but they aren’t criminals “
Unfortunately many are criminals. They are heavily involved in the drug trade and prostitution/sex slavery here in the northeast, they are involved in many shootings every day.
This occurs not just in big cities, but small towns throughout the USA. BTW>>>the mere fact that they entered the USA illegally makes them criminals, the lack of court proceedings keeps them from being convicts.
I have no problem with legal immigrants, and favor a way to legalize the status of those who have been here illegally and are self supporting.

Do all weddings now have these singers?
NO….
I’m marrying off my third child within the next two weeks. There will be an orchestra, but no separate singer hired. This does not mean that some member of the orchestra may not sing at some point, but it is not an extra I am paying for.
We are having a wedding, not a concert or show.

March 27, 2016 10:35 pm at 10:35 pm in reply to: Inviting Non-Jewish Co-Workers To A Simcha? #1144074Ex-CTLawyerParticipantInteresting day for this 5 year old thread to be resurrected………
I’ve just read the entire thread and will return to the original question.
I am marrying off child number 3 in the next two weeks. There will be non-Jews invited to the simcha. I have a small law firm and my child and the new spouse will be new associates. How could I possibly exclude the 3 non-Jewish firm employees while inviting the rest of the firm? No way if I want to keep a harmonious business atmosphere. The non-Jewish employees/partner handle the requirements of a law practice that occur on Shabbos and Yuntif. My child (mid 20s) knows all 3 from birth. They have been at both sons’ B’nai Mitvah, and weddings, and both my parents funerals. No, they were not at brisim, because they occurred in shul. They know how to dress and what is appropriate behavior and speech…which is more than I can say for some of the non-observant but Jewish relations and neighbors who must also be invited to some of these things.
I have been honored with invitations to many of their family events. I do not attend anything at a church, and they understand why. They have gone out of their way to order meals from the kosher caterer so my wife and I could be included. Never have we been subjected to the kind of inappropriate behavior at one of their functions as we encountered and walked out of at non-frum ‘kosher catered’ Jewish simchas.

Ex-CTLawyerParticipantI referred to any Kindle that has direct wifi as Fire to differentiate it from the original ereader which required you to download books to a computer and then use a cord to upload to Kindle. I have a Paperwhite

Ex-CTLawyerParticipantnewbee……….
The paperwhite battery was not sufficient for a flight from Korea two months ago.
As to printed books: I love the texture of vellum or fine paper and the look of inked letters, as well as the heft of the book in my hands. I don’t like the feel of a battery/device getting warm as I hold it for hours.

I won’t make my decision who to vote for in November until after the political party conventions nominate their candidates.
I am a Democrat. I’ll be a delegate to our state convention, haven’t decided if I want to go to the national convention, but could have a seat if I wish (I’ve gone a few times in the past).
That said, If I find the Republican nominee to be more agreeable to my beliefs than the Democratic nominee, I’ll vote that way.
I’ve know Clinton for more than 40 years, but she does not yet have my support in the primary.
BTW>>> should I decide to vote for any Republican candidate for public office (something I have done on occasion) I can not publicly support the person or donate. That is forbidden by the rules of out Democratic Town Committee of which I am a member. CT does not have cross endorsed candidates (like the days when DA Ted Hogan ran as the candidate of all 4 NY parties) so it is not an issue.
Ex-CTLawyerParticipantI’m with DaasYochid on this one
Ex-CTLawyerParticipantsqueak………..
I don’t give my vote to anyone, they have to earn it.
That said I’ll be a delegate to the state Democratic Party Convention, and will be bound to cast my vote as my district votes in the primary.
I have not yet committed to Clinton or Sanders. I know Clinton more than 40 years and respect her intelligence. I have only met Sanders 3 times in my life and find him honorable. BUT is he electable? I’m not sure.
I’ll not vote for Trump under any circumstances. I’ll not decide my November vote until we know the official candidates after the national party conventions.
Ex-CTLawyerParticipantNewbee……
I don’t consider audio books equal to traditional hardbound books. You don’t see the punctuation, italics, etc. in an audio book. Instead you get the voice interpretation of the reader, not your own take.
As to Kindles, I have two, the original and a modern Fire Paperwhite. I don’t find the battery life sufficient for long haul intercontinental overnight flights. Besides, I prefer print to ebooks, buts that’s a topic for another thread

Ex-CTLawyerParticipantThe US government doesn’t have standardized sizes required by law(some countries do).
There has been size creep over the years.A pair of size 40 pants today is substantially bigger than 15 years ago.
In the 1960s women knew that for every $10 more they spent on a dress they went down one size.
The reality of clothing production is that time is money. Workers are paid piece work, not a flat hourly wage. A sewing machine operator will sew the wrong size label into a garment rather than wait for a bundle girl to bring the correct ones. One operator leave 1/8″ seam allowance, another 1/4″.
Typically sewing floor inspectors are operators who have become too old and slow to profitably operate machines. Instead they inspect: trim loose threads and look for major defects. They don’t measure garments for size accuracy.
When I left the garment business in 1980, major retailers would spot check one garment per hundred dozen for size within tolerances.

Yes, it is all about rhythm and sleeping late on Sunday would disrupt that.
I come from a family of early risers. This is ‘my time’ to read, learn, enjoy a cup of coffee out of doors in good weather or looking out at the woods and animals in bad weather.
We have a home that is more than 200 years old. There are 5 fireplaces. This morning, I raked the coals and added logs to take a chill off from the overnight snow.
I also let the four dogs out to run and play in the fenced yard.
When they were young and at home, I would often make fresh cooked/baked breakfast for the children.

I’m a father and grandfather approaching retirement. My body has changed over the years, but I weight within 15 lbs of when I was 18. My wedding suit still fits…we took an anniversary picture wearing our wedding clothing last year.
Unlike off the rack clothing, custom clothing (not shirts) are made with ample seam allowances so that alterations can me made for some realistic body changes.
An off the rack pair of slacks might have a 1/2″ seam allowance in the seat and a 2″ hem. A custom will have a 2-3″ seam allowance and a 3-4″ hem. After all the customer pays for the material so it doesn’t cut into manufacturer’s profit. Having grown up in the garment business I know all about squeezing every possible garment out of a roll of fabric.

Most people coming to the Chuppah and luncheon are not from NYC. We live 60 minutes drive on a Sunday morning from midtown Manhattan.
The wedding will start on time (my maternal side is Yekkah). We expect to wind things up in CT by 2:30.
The evening in NY starts at 7 cocktail hour/schmorg with 8PM dinner/dancing
The cocktail hour can be that short as there is no time needed for Tisch/TaNayim/Badecken…it’s not a wedding but a feast celebrating a wedding.
While you have made the assumption that the ladies will be making themselves ready in the hall, that is not the case. Mrs. CT Lawyer has taken over two beauty salons/spas for that purpose adjoining the venue.
The evening will wrap up by midnight. Monday is a workday for many. We have reserved a block of hotel rooms and will not return to CT until Monday mid day.
BUT…just so you know. we married off one daughter and 2 foster nieces from our home with Sunday brunch weddings and no one complained about going to a 7am minyan in order to travel. I go to a minyan before 7 every day, what’s the big deal? I don’t understand the sleep late on Sunday mishegas. I get up at 4:30 every day

You arrive near the location 20 minutes early. You have time to park. Get out of the car leisurely. Check and adjust your clothing. Make sure you have everything your are supposed to bring with you. Turn your phone to vibrate so it will not disturb anyone. Approx 2 minutes before the stated time you approach the doors to the establishment. Then you have time to go hang your coat in the cloakroom and present yourself on time at the event.
Never would you actually enter before the stated time, that is inconsiderate. Punctuality means Not 7:59, Not 8:01, but 8:00.
Fashionably late is never in fashion, it’s just late.
And the full quotation is “better late than never, BUT BETTER NEVER LATE.”

way back in 1918 my great-great grandfather’s children established a foundation and bought a cemetery for his descendants. More important than just providing burial was the twice monthly social gatherings.
Some had moved to Brooklyn or CT or New Jersey back then. This kept the family together.
We don’t meet twice a month anymore, we meet 4 times each year, in NYC, the suburbs, Florida and California and occasionally in Israel.
It is always amazing to meet a 3rd or 4th cousin (or for my grandchildren a 5th or 6th cousin) and find there are similar traits, likes and dislikes that still exist.
