(your deleted thread – You noticed, eh?)

You would probably know, then, that I wouldn’t be likely to realize it…

(I’m not meant to respond to that post about MA, correct?)

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114101

are YOU willing to risk your childrens frumkeit & torah just so you could liten to this jazz music copied from a goyish singer?

    (A. It’s just “jazz.”

    B. Have you ever heard any actual jazz?)

    C. Please find me a sefer by an acknowledged halachic authority

or spiritual leader that says that there is a problem with jazz,

or with using a tune composed by a non-Jew. Until then, I reserve

the right to not consider them a threat to anyone’s Yiddishkeit.

    D. The question was to be understood as “Just how serious are you about this?”

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114098

when your children C”V become KAR or OTD.

What on Earth does “KAR” stand for?

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114096

There is no indication on your part that you are wanting a response or validation

I assume that if anyone wants to respond,

they will do so without having been asked

Is that not clear? (Are you trying to say that I’m not a

very good conversationalist? I’ll readily admit to that…)

MA could be using the Internet not at his home.

in reply to: Tehillas vs Chemdas vs nachlas #1113923

Don’t talk on your Verizon line as you drive your jappy to yeshivah.

That’s all I have to say about this.

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114089

(I don’t know if you saw the first or second version of my last post…)

there is no indication on your part that you are wanting a

response or validation, or that there would even be one.

I just assume that if anyone disagrees or wants to clarify or

respond in any other way, they will do so without having been asked.

This is, after all, a message board. If I was a mod and I closed

threads after posting in them, or if I said things on the phone

and then hung up, that would have been a reasonable statement.

in reply to: Off topic topics #1113854

Sometimes, it’s because people have an agenda and are just

waiting for a somewhat relevant opening to post it.

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114087

(I did not mean that I could have answered the question without

you being aware of it, I meant that you could be unaware that

a song you listen to took its tune from a non-Jewish song.

You would not need to be stupid not to know it.)

Do you ever wonder if you are right,

or are you just comfortable knowing you could be right?

Let’s rephrase that: Being aware that you could be wrong,

do you wonder if you’re actually wrong, or is it enough

for you that you already have an opinion?

    I think that’s a silly question.

(Perhaps the question was meant to be whether I

am aware of the possibility of my being wrong.

I think that’s a silly question as well.)

(I almost missed the link. I thought of posting this there, but

I decided that it fit in better here, and I thought of posting

that link, but I decided there was no reason to.)

How do you know he doesn’t know anyone who owns a cow?

(Does “Bubby I Love You” imply anything it doesn’t mean to?)

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114085

(You could be unaware of it…)

    You answered a question I didn’t ask,

and I’m not answering a question you did ask,

so we’re about even. (I think it’s a silly question.)

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114083

In this case, I said “probably,” so being right is a matter of

whether it’s a reasonable assumption, not whether you actually

listen to music he doesn’t approve of, so I’m not going to ask if

you listen to any songs which use the tune from a non-Jewish song,

which is something he definitely does not approve of.

You are presumably allowed to milk a cow for its owner,

which is the context the song is about doing things in.

(The song also implies that milking a cow is a melochoh.

I doubt that’s true, although animals are muktzeh.)

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114081

The music he approves of is “nice & calm beautiful music,” and most

people don’t limit their listening to songs under a certain speed,

    so there you go.

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114077

Edit: Well, this was a useless post.

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114076

Music is very personal tastes, what one person thinks is noise, others like and what one person might thinks as calm and nice, others think as boring and puts one to sleep

I like calm, beautiful music and fast excited music depending on my mood. Both have their place.

You guys don’t seem to understand him. He’s saying

that some music is morally objectionable, regardless

of whether you or anyone else finds it enjoyable.

Edit: I wrote that before seeing the previous post.

in reply to: How do you shecht a giraffe when your heart is black? #1114073

(“Rocken” is not a word in the English language.)

when you say “music that you don’t approve of” instead

of saying inappropriate music is that your way of…?

It’s my way of saying that what he is talking

about is not objectively “inappropriate music.”

Take that as you will, keeping in mind that you

probably listen to music he doesn’t approve of.

in reply to: Suggest subtitles for others (okay, and yourself…) #1152651

I think RebYidd23 should have a subtitle that warns newbies

not to take his posts too seriously (like Popa’s sort of does).

(Kosher is a serious marketing point, in case anyone doesn’t know.)

in reply to: on being fat #1113944

interesting midrash. I wonder though about the cases where obesity actually leads to bad health problems, heart attacks, etc. In those instances, it would seem to me that a person does have bechirah.

Tzinim u’pachim. (Also, R’ Naftali Ropshitzer used to say that he

didn’t see why people had to go so far in fulfilling Hashem’s

    decree that they be foolish…)

On the other hand, notice the word “????”. That could change the whole message of the medrash to mean that HaShem will help a person overcome just about any of those traits.

The statement is “that matter (yir’as shomayim) is given into the hands of man alone (????).” Had the previous matters been stated to be under Hashem’s control, and then something was said to be in His control ????, you could infer that humans could possibly mix into the others. As it stands, I don’t see this message of yours anywhere.

Besides, being short or ugly is not something people were

meant to overcome (although they have been trying recently).

But, ultimately one’s reputation is earned, not divinely granted.

Reputation isn’t mentioned at all in that quotation.

Their history in 1980s had many similarities to Jewish history in 1940s.

    How very logical.

(One thing Jewish musicians have so far not copied from

non-Jewish musicians is non-indicative song titles.)

Seeing as he liked Rabbi Luft’s booklet,

he’d probably recommend Rabbi Luft’s CD.

    Mashiach Agent:

Do you really think that if a Jewish child receives a good chinuch

from parents they have a good relationship with, except that the

Jewish music that you don’t approve of is played in their home,

that child is more likely to develop bad middos and/or do aveiros

than a child who grows up under the same circumstances, but

without the music that you don’t approve of?

in reply to: Headphone/earphone recommendations, please #1113915

a headset has to be a really good one but

earplugs can be cheap and sound good too.

Thanks for the info (I’m assuming you meant earbuds).

    Appdev:

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Earbuds that don’t go in the ear canal

or on-ear headphones (not the ones).

Open-back, if that means “cross-part on top of the head.”

(Noise canceling – Probably doesn’t apply to those types, or to…)

Price range – $20 or less.

Music, videos (heavy on dialogue), and gaming, but not in that sense).

A wide range, with loudness tendencies from folk/traditional pop to heavy metal (but I don’t turn anything up to uncomfortably loud levels).

in tournaments, in case anyone was wondering.)

(Let’s call it two decades, shall we? I take that back.)

in reply to: Is the shechinah shoreh in the coffee room? #1113755

The Shechina is not something tangible,

so it doesn’t need a tangible location to be.

Physical locations are by definition tangible.

We are talking about a metaphysical phenomenon

    that nevertheless is physically locatable.

“I will not milk a cow” from a song you probably know.

Actually, you must milk your cows on Shabbos,

because they will suffer if you don’t.

(I think there are halachos about what you

are or aren’t allowed to do with such milk.)

in reply to: Country Yossi versus Abie Rottenberg versus? #1113516

    this is the other story

Have you heard the new thing, or is that an assumption?

(Also, if it’s true, would you call it a sequel?

    That’s the problem with meta-narratives…)

in reply to: Headphone/earphone recommendations, please #1113906

I actually don’t know if that’s a joke… I’d prefer headphones, actually, but if a good pair of earphones would be cheaper, I could go with that.

in reply to: Let's talk about board games #1113762

(Mods, can I ask you to turn my first post into just a link to this one?

    http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/lets-talk-about-board-games#post-588885 )

I’m thinking of making a thread to recommend board games (etc.) to check out,

and I’ve got a few questions (to try and figure out what to do first).

Are you interested in games to play with your friends (teenage or

older), with your family (ages 8 and up), with younger children, or

    with just one other person?

What price would you consider cheap, and what price just too much?

How long a game is too long for you?

How much detail would you want about any game being recommended?

Would you prefer that a game be as uncomplicated as possible?

Are you interested more in games that are more about luck or strategy?

Which of the following sound more interesting to you than the others?

    Puzzle-solving / Racing / Sports / Physical skill / Words / Logic / Memory

Fighting with other players / Competing for points or to reach a goal

Playing a game without other people (as you might a video game)

Working with other players against the game instead of each other

Games that are more about the players than the game (think Apples to Apples)

Can you name a few games you’ve enjoyed, and perhaps what

it is about those games you would say causes you to enjoy them?

    (Maybe it’s still too much…)

in reply to: Let's talk about board games #1113761

This thread wasn’t meant for you, Yserbius! 🙂

I wasn’t going to bother making the speech,

    but thanks for doing it.

    TOO MANY QUESTIONS!

I suppose you’re right. I’ll have to correct that.

    In the past decade

Let’s call it two decades, shall we? Torres, Tikal, El Grande, and

6 nimmt! (all by Wolfgang Kramer), Bohnanza (by Uwe Rosenberg),

Union Pacific (by Alan R. Moon), Vinci (predecessor of Small World),

The world has long moved past [mass-market games] … I’ve seen the frum oilem only partially embrace it (Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan are somewhat popular in heimishe homes)

I’m led to believe that the situation isn’t too much better

among non-Jews, where those games (and a few others, like Pandemic)

have also managed to get a spot in standard retail stores.

Seriously people, look up your local tabletop

game store (yes, such a thing exists)

I don’t think it does in Lakewood.

    …and ask for a recommendation.

And then get it online for less.

    I like…

You can just look at the family games chart you-know where. Be off. 🙂

(Googling those last 2 or 3 words doesn’t find it – sad, isn’t it?)

By the way, have you heard of Forbidden Desert ?

    Then there’s Saboteur

A lot of hidden-role party games sound like they might be hard to play if

you can’t lie. I suppose I should ask a halachic authority about that…

in reply to: Let's talk about board games #1113760

    The Goq:

people think since its a dice game its mostly luck this

is false there is a great deal of strategy involved

While you’re right in some cases, I don’t think backgammon is

one of them. Although how you play does matter, for two players

with equal levels of knowledge, it comes down to luck.

Here are 2 experiments you can try:

    1. Play a good number of games against an opponent who agrees to

play as conservatively as possible, and see who wins more games.

    2. Play a good number of games, recording how many times in each

game each player rolled a double 3 or more (unless they weren’t

able to move at all with it). See how many times the person who

rolled more of them won that game.

I play rather aggressively taking off many pieces

    while risking having pieces open

Sounds like you might like push-your-luck games (or those that

allow for such a playing style). I guess I’ll add that to my list.

i like the one on one aspect and for

good or bad I am extremely competitive

Two-player strategy games (perhaps abstract ones like backgammon).

    Already on the list.

    skripka:

    i love scotland yard.

You might like Mister X, which is kind of a modernized version

which I’ve seen describes as “Fury of Dracula without the combat,”

    and I know that one’s really well-thought-of. I don’t know much

about the game, but hidden-location games are on my list now.

    never play battleship against

Anyone who’s figured out that you should simply cover the board in

diagonal lines, allowing more space between them once the smallest

ship is eliminated, if you don’t know this yourself.

Anyone who insists on… that goes >here.<

(Anyone at all. Play something else.)

in reply to: "What's your favorite color?" is bad chinuch #1114166

Comlink X, it was in response to his second post, Why do you care about chinuch?

    Oops. 🙂

t must be realized that the purpose of food is health and nourishment, and to teach a child otherwise is wrong.

Here’s a little story about R’ Matisyohu Salomon, who we

can probably all agree knows a thing or two about chinuch.

A man brought a child along on a visit to R’ Matisyohu.

During the visit, he (or his Rebbetzin – I don’t remember,

it doesn’t matter) offered the visitor’s child a lollipop.

R’ Matisyohu urged the child (in Yiddish) to “Take the red one,

the red one is good.” When the visitor asked about Eisov having

requested “the red” food, he responded along the lines of (in Yiddish) “Children like the red – Eisav remained a child.”

(I don’t remember who I heard the story from.)

the insinuation that i was trying to slip something by

That wasn’t my intention at all! As I mentioned, I was

just trying to hint that I knew what the other thing was

(though the connection between the two isn’t very strong).

(It’s occurred to me that you could be right about it

being because of copyright. Only the mods would know.

I don’t think crediting gives permission to use except

in ways categorized as “fair use,” though.)

in reply to: Games people play the wrong way #1113523

I solve the issu by not playing at all. It takes much less time that way.

    Good for you. 🙂

I forgot to mention that the game takes less time when you use the

auction rule, which also slightly improves the game, but not enough

    to make it worth playing.

which the mods feel is disrespectful to the original.

in reply to: Country Yossi versus Abie Rottenberg versus? #1113505

Don’t forget the Golden Crown also i think by abie rottenberg. You can hear him singing the songs.

I think Baruch Levine did the singing on that album.

Country Yossi is also underrated for the work he did with Ohr Chodosh ( remember “Eileh Borechev?”) not just as a song parodist ( forgive me oh Comlink-X, grammarian of the CR, if that is not a real word)

I found out somewhat recently that at least

one of Ohr Chodosh’s songs was a parody as well.

(It’s a real word. Thanks for the title, though

I doubt I’d win a grammar fight with haifagirl.) 🙂

in reply to: breakfast cereal haikus #1113394
