    I don’t.

The other planet’s population will not be bound by

to go home and marry their own females as well.

On the contrary, I don’t think the CR is serious enough. Everyone stop laughing, and get a grip on life. We don’t even discuss half the worlds issues in this place.

This is where some people come to get away from serious life for a while.

I think I’d be happy to talk about any issue I can do something about…

in reply to: mbd yiddish lyrics a lichitig shabbos #1119556

The correct (althoght not literal) translation for ” vi glicklech is er vos Der Shabbos heet er” is, how fortunate is he who keeps the Shabbos, not whom the Shabbos protects.

That is correct. As Mammele pointed out in another thread,

my Yiddish grammar could use some work. As Ujew points out,

though, there is nothing non-literal about the correct translation

(“literal” does not mean that the meaning is given in the same order).

2 of 4 (certain parties were responsible for the delay):

I’m not here to answer any questions, I’m just asking you to think

Are we really better off now that technology has brought us global warming?

And the ethics of the application of all this scientific knowledge,

    where should it come from?

Decisions about scientific research are funded by politicians with agendas

Or by corporate boardrooms governed without concern for human beings,

    just what the yen does

And the results have been fantastic,

particularly if you judge by how much money has been made

You’re right about “gegeiben,” but the first chorus is slightly

different from the later ones – it doesn’t have “mir,” and it

starts with “Ubber” instead of “Oy, vee.”

in reply to: mbd yiddish lyrics a lichitig shabbos #1119549

Heh. That song’s been sitting on my desktop since the linked thread.

    (I’m afraid you’ve made some mistakes, Skripka…)

(It seems that how I transliterate Yiddish has changed. Whatever –

I assume you’re going to listen to the song.)

    Verse 1:

Der kop fil mit zorgen (The head filled with worries)

Fin nechten biz morgen (From yesterday to tomorrow)

Die kinderlach vaksen doch gur azoy gich (The children grow… [IDK. So fast?])

Die yooren antloifen doch (The years run away)

Dos leiben fahrkoift men doch (One sells his life)

Kein mohl kein tzait nisht tzu kikken oif zich (Never any time to introspect)

    Chorus 1 (first time only):

Ubber gliklich is der (But fortunate is he)

Vos der Shabbos heet er (Whom the Shabbos protects)

Geiben fin Himmel fahr Yeeden alein (Given from Heaven for Jews alone)

Siz gevoren g’shtelt (It was established?)

Tzi fargessen fin der velt (To forget about this world)

    Ah reeeeee (?) un a lichtigkait ([??? a radiance)

Vos nor mir farshtein (That only we understand)

    Verse 2:

Zin geit shoin intehr (The sun goes down already)

Di Shabbos vehrt neintehr (The Shabbos draws closer)

Di challos di vain oifen tish shoin geshtehlt (The challos, the wine, already placed on the table)

Di hertzer derfreiyen zich (The hearts rejoice)

Neshumes banaiyen zich (Souls renew themselves)

    Lichte(r?)lach brennen (Lights burn)

Balaichten di vehlt (Illuminating the world)

Chorus 2 (there are minor changes):

Oy, vee gliklich is der (Oh, how fortunate is he)

Vos der Shabbos heet er (Whom the Shabbos protects)

Geiben fin Himmel fahr mir Yeedelach alein (Given from Heaven for we Jews alone)

Siz gevoren g’shtelt (It was established?)

Tzi fargessen fin der velt (To forget about this world)

    Ah reeeeee (?) un a lichtigkait (??? a radiance)

Vos nor mir farshtein (That only we understand)

    Verse 3:

Tahm Oilam haBeh (The taste of the the World to Come)

Feelt men in Shabbes (One feels in Shabbos)

Mit di maluchim (With the angels)

Bahm heiligen tish (At the holy table)

Mir zingen tsuzamen (We sing together)

Es hut alleh tahmin (It has all the flavors)

Dos essen in t’rinken (The food and drink)

Es shmekt azoi frish (It smells so fresh)

    Welcome back, GeshmakMan.

    in reply to: Need information . . . #1118196

Oops. That is correct. Perhaps you could look at the title pages of his sefarim on a database, if any are on any.

(According to the Internet, “many of his followers today do not know that he had a child and nobody knows what happened to this boy, whose father died when he was five years old.”)

in reply to: Lyrics to Country Yossi Song "The Big K'nocker"? #1148434

Oh, I see what you mean now. That wasn’t what I meant,

    although it might be true.

    in reply to: Ki-naidel #1117829

In the original Yiddish, it’s k’neidlach. In English, you could technically say k’neidels, but I doubt many people do.

in reply to: Artscroll gemara now coming onto technology #1149454

Please explain why technology is inherently unholy, those of you who think so. Also, be prepared to answer whether you think the same of devices that do not have the ability to connect to the Internet, such as the “Boox Buki” (or whatever it’s called).

(By the way, your home telephone (assuming you still have one,

and that your service is not “kosher”) can be used for things

of the same nature as your issue with the Internet.)

As has been pointed out, electronic devices will never replace sefarim entirely, because they cannot be used on Shabbos.

Also, yeshivos will probably not allow them, so there’s that as well.

Yes, consult your LOR before you lament the possibility of a

device with d’varim shebik’dusha on it being brought somewhere that it is forbidden to bring sefarim, Mr. Agent.

(Actually, maybe it’s better to occupy our time than his.)

    He probably means appearance-wise.

    in reply to: Need information . . . #1118193

If anyone here lives in Yerushalayim, maybe they can help you.

The yeshiva he founded, Yeshivat Nahar Shalom, is (according to the Internet) “located on a small alley in the back of the Mahane Yehuda Shuk and is physically difficult to get to.”

But if you go in there, I’m sure the Rosh Yeshiva could

tell you his grandmother’s name, if it’s that important.

in reply to: Are chassidic women allowed to fly planes? #1117795

Is driving banned so as to require community infrastructure

To keep them dependent on others? NYC has public transportation.

or merely to discourage independent behavior?

    I think you’re being ridiculous.

in reply to: Bring Back Shame #1117527

For example, if I started a small business that created 6 jobs, would that count as tzedaka for me? Now, if I knew of a poor Jew, and gave him one of those jobs, that would be tzedaka, but just the general job creation?

Perhaps it would depend on your intentions.

Mammele – Yes, that’s the word.

    Skripka – No.

I forgot to mention that I don’t know how to translate “bruch.”

(Also, I think there are two “No? Yeah.”s before the “Yeah? No!”)

The child of those parents should be the one to set the boundaries with the intrusive parents. Never have it come from the in-law child.

    Gentlemen, behold wisdom.

Are you sure that number is for contributions made after

the last episode? Also, couldn’t it be that the money

(if taken) was returned, but the number doesn’t show that?

in reply to: What is a Frum Feminist? #1116253

    According to Wikipedia,

“Feminism is a range of movements and ideologies that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve equal political, economic, cultural, personal, and social rights for women.

This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. A feminist advocates or supports the rights and equality of women.”

You can be a frum feminist, just as you can be a frum

environmentalist*, but the thing is that when feminism

and the Torah or contemporary chareidi/Orthodox practice

conflict, those who are frum and feminists often think

that it is not feminism but Judaism which should yield,

    which is obviously not acceptable.

*I don’t know how appropriate “isms” that aren’t Judaism are for a Jew.

They rioted in Ferguson, they blocked off streets in Manhattan,

they made the police afraid to leave the safety of their cars.

Do you really think that the reason Jews don’t do

things like that is cowardice or a lack of achdus?
