The Jews always prayed in Hebrew. While virtually all post-Talmudic

Torah writings are in Hebrew, I don’t know about historic literacy rates.

Here’s the true frum view of end-of-the-world prepping.

    Sanhedrin 98b:

Rabbi Elazar’s students asked him what a person should do to save themselves from chevlei Moshiach (“the birthpangs of Moshiach” – the upheaval that there will be in the world before Moshiach’s arrival). He answered that they should be involved with Torah study and g’milus chasodim (acts of kindness).

I think you meant “v’chen l’mar.” Either way, “mar” refers to a man.

My source was Rav Bodner’s sefer. I didn’t notice the little note

that pointed to another page, where he brings down the machlokes

Iacisrmma mentioned. Perhaps the thread’s title should actually be “PSA – Do thorough research before making public halachic statements.”

Given how long ago the term “nivul peh” was first used, it should

be obvious that it doesn’t refer to specific modern words.

It definitely refers to pritzus – see Mesilas Yeshorim chapter 11.

The use of non-pritzusdik but vulgar language would fall under the

concept of lashon n’kiyah. I don’t know of a requirement not to

hear other people be vulgar, although presumably one’s nature

ought to be refined enough that one would want to avoid doing so.

Mod 100 said not. Maybe they used to.

He said they weren’t public information, not that

they don’t have them. They probably wouldn’t let

Mods do have designated e-mail accounts.

(I don’t know how often they check them.)

in reply to: I'm very frustrated #1211125

According to Rav Simcha Bunim Cohen (Laws of Daily Living, Vol. 1, page 174), one who was awake all night should say Birchos Hashachar, with the exceptions of those that refer to sleep – Elokai Neshomo and haMa’avir Sheinah, which they should be yotzei by listening to someone else. Regarding Birchas haTorah, the Mishnah Berurah says not to say them oneself, but many Acharonim disagree. Recent poskim (Rav Shlomo Zalman, Rav Wosner) disagree on whether one is allowed to learn without having been yotzei Birchas haTorah that day if he cannot currently find someone to be motzi him.

in reply to: It is the same tune!!! #1225957

If it has pritzus, it’s also a problem. Or nibbul peh.

I’d forgotten about that. You wouldn’t be allowed to

listen to that even in a non-musical context, though.

(Also, by “nibbul peh” you presumably mean foul language.

    See here: http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/does-foul-language-make-things-assur/page/2 )

What happens when you’re at at store and they play Xmas carols? Can you still shop?

Didn’t we have a thread on this? Or is Xmas music different than Xmas carols, which are traditionally sung in the church (at least that’s what they show on tv).

Carols are also sung at home and at other people’s doorways (“caroling”).

Secular music made for the season is not in the category we’re

talking about, although I would wonder about songs praising Yoshke – could songs dedicated to a”z be a problem even if

they’re not part of its official worship? I don’t know.

I think I hadn’t noticed your earlier post.

    “Ohhhhhhh, things change

No use holding on because / Nothing stays the same”

(That’s actually more than half the lyrics, not counting repetition.)

Are you sure there is a need to say birchas haTorah again

    after a sleepless night?

in reply to: It is the same tune!!! #1225952

If I’m not mistaken, the only music that you are, according to

halocho (hashkafic/spiritual considerations aside), not allowed

to listen to is music that is designated for use in ceremonies of

avodah zarah (church music, for example).

I don’t think it was meant to be. (BuzzFeed + WikiLeaks is my guess.)

The phrase “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired” is far

older than that song, and that’s not quite the Metallica lyric.

…Schar Mitzvah, almost everything… is copied from a kol isha non-Jewish song, but I doubt the mods want me naming it.

Perhaps they’ll let you post the initials of the song and artist

(note whether singer or group) and the year of the song’s release?

in reply to: It is the same tune!!! #1225947

Why do you need to promote their Twitter accounts? 🙂

I’m no longer sure the Leiner song copied its melody from

whatever song I heard – they’re not exactly the same, although

what I was hearing was a non-singer singing casually and not

an attempt to record the song in question. Someone elsewhere

on the Internet (not responding to me) did mention a name, though.

I don’t know of any suitable ones, though.)

in reply to: It is the same tune!!! #1225945

It’s actually better not to know these things. If you know the original words, and if they are assur, then it becomes assur to listen to the Jewish song if you end up thinking about the original words. So says R’ Matisyahu Salomon, Shlita, in one of his books. Otherwise, it’s not a problem.

I have no plans to listen to the Simcha Leiner song again.

What is an online game anyhow? That sounds like fun.

It’s a computer game, played against other people over an

Internet connection. In this case, it’s a game that plays like

a card game would (“digital card game”), except that the details

would make it very difficult to play with physical cards.

Commercial games usually can’t handle 10 people per team (or will involve deception)… Can they split into 2 groups of about 10 each?

(Perhaps you should just Google large group games…)
