Just came from a siyum. I’m wondering if it is preferable to fast or to have a siyum?

As far as the OT, perhaps the b’chorim will do the Avodah while the Kohanim, who are also Levyim obviously, will play the instruments and do what the Levyim do (along with the ‘plain’ Levyim.)

Another interesting issue is whether a Ger may be considered a b’chor, since a convert is considered to be ‘born again’ at the time of conversion. Probably not though since he is lacking peter rechem.

Exactly. If you see it on the street you are an Ones. You didn’t set out to see it. And when and if you do c’v see it, you should turn away from it asap. Watching a movie otoh, you are setting out to see it. You know its going to be there. And you are fixated to the screen. And you are not turning away when it happens. (And it will be often. And even if theoretically you would turn away every time it popped up, it’s not an excuse as you knew it would happen so you can’t put yourself in the position of seeing it even momentarly in the first place.)

In Europe, when poverty was the norm, our grandparents considered it a good and healthy state to being larger and bulkier, as too many people were too thin due to their lack of proper nutrition.

$9 each way. If someone wastes money on the tunnel, the girl ought to dump him for being a spend thrift.

667,477 is significantly higher than David’s number of 235,000. Something doesn’t add up here or with David’s count.

eclipse: giving a child negative info regarding his/her parent, is akin to putting a dagger into that child’s heart. In ALL circumstances. There is NEVER a justification. Even if the other parent was the world’s top criminal. The child will be 1000 times healthier not knowing. Otherwise a parent would be lucky if such a child remains frum or even sane.

TheWolf: There are few such films; representing less than 1/10,000th of all movies. When someone goes to a theater or rents a DVD you can be almost virtually certain that is not it.

CharlieHall: We don’t sit on a street corner and watch the women passing by, for an hour and a half.

Brother: THAT *should* be a reason not to watch (in addition to your other reasons). It is bad enough on its own.

Your Rosh Yeshiva gave him his daughter to marry and your sister and aunt’s keep in touch with him. Does he have a perspective here?

A day or two you’ll give whether you’re selected or not. If you are selected, it could be weeks.

in reply to: Jury duty (shakes fist) :( #758058

It’s true. I can determine a defendent’s guilt by his face. At least I believe so. By admitting this to the judge, I am being honest.

If the defense attorney still wants me on the jury, G-d only help him.

in reply to: Jury duty (shakes fist) :( #758050

Tell the Judge you can immediately determine guilt by a “perp’s” face.

in reply to: Gezel Akum #757411

Gezel akum is assur. (No one argues or disputes that or claims otherwise.) But for different reasons than gezeila. It is different aveiros. In fact, ipso facto once someone wrongfully engaged in gezel akum, he isn’t mechuyiv al pi halacha to return it.

David1999: And the “ancillary reasons” that make an eruv not possible in Manhattan wouldn’t be applicable in Brooklyn for what reason?

in reply to: Boro Park Eruv #761132

Even David’s own numbers bring you perilously close to 3 million in Brooklyn. 2.5+ mil. 2010 population count + 1/4 mil. commuters + 2.8% undercount. I dont know where he gets the commuter and undercount numbers, but even assuming he isn’t underreporting them you are still bordering 3 mil. Considering past census’ were as high as 2.75 mil. population count alone, you were easily over. And considering it is an issur d’oraysa that is chayiv misa, prudency would surely be in order.

in reply to: Boro Park Eruv #761128

And why did Rav Moshe rule against an eruv in Manhattan, which clearly has less than a 3 million population?

in reply to: Boro Park Eruv #761122

David1999: why didn’t anyone let Reb Moshe know of the alleged factual errors he utilized during his lifetime? And if someone did, why didn’t Reb Moshe retract?

in reply to: Boro Park Eruv #761115

The 1980 census was conducted throughout that year. It was tallied the following year. Dissemination of the geographic data breakdowns would not have begun earlier than late ’81. Easy access to the information in the pre-internet age would take much longer than even that.

in reply to: Boro Park Eruv #761079

The 2.4 million is in the main Igros Moshe published by Rav Moshe during his lifetime. The 3.0 million is only in the controversial 8th cheilek of the Igros, not chosen for publication by Rav Moshe, but rather done posthumously.

in reply to: Being Anonymous #755898

The former. I only put my uniform on in the privacy of a phone booth.

in reply to: Boro Park Eruv #761027

What I find interesting is that while in Boro Park you will find a sizable contigent of people, approximately 25% of the neighborhood, holding of the eruv and you’ll see people pushing strollers on Shabbos, in Flatbush on the other hand the eruv is not held of by the vast vast majority and rarely will you see a stroller being pushed on Shabbos. And the very few in Flatbush who do hold of it are generally only the more modern crowd that probably also held of the old eruv that I think was the one Reb Moshe paskened against.

I never quite understood why this discrepancy between Flatbush and Boro Park. Any ideas anyone?

in reply to: Bochrim Spray-Paint Over Not Tzniyus Advertisement #760038

Would you name your Rov if he commented on a topic being discussed in the CR? What more do you want. Someone asked and was told they did the correct thing. Common decency demands anonymous posters not name Rabbi’s names here.

When left-wing posters here claim their unnamed Rav permitted all sorts of forbidden fruits, they are defended on their unwillingness to name names. Have the same respect.

Perhaps the “backup eiruv” doesn’t even exist other than in some imaginations.

in reply to: Boro Park Eruv #760952

The majority of Rabbonim in Brooklyn who studied the issue reached the conclusion that the Boro Park and Flatbush eriuv’s are treif.

Has there ever been a time in the past 3,000 years of Jewish history (prior to recent times) when there was ever a custom anywhere where Jews went to shul WITHOUT ANY hat or other head covering (more than just a yarmulka)?

    PBA: Not offhand. Try googling

    igros moshe male lifeguard

    or

    halacha male lifeguard

I’m unable to google from here. Let us know if you find something useful.

in reply to: Kosher beach? #751297

There is absolutely no heter for a male lifeguard who is Jewish. In very limited circumstances there is a heter (in the Igros Moshe I believe) for a non-Jewish male lifeguard. But not for pleasure swimming or activites. In that case one must not swim rather than use a non Jewish male.

in reply to: Black hats #751603

If you see a uniformed officer in fatigues, you know he is a member of the military. Otherwise he may be as well, but probably isn’t. If you see a Yid in a black hat, you know he is a member of the Yeshiva community. Otherwise he may be or may not be.
