Following ICOT and BPG’s advice, I finally mustered up the courage to inform her of the situation. Despite a curt “thank you” and the door immediately closed, her face said it all. She turned sheetrock white in the face and looked like her world just caved in. I only hope she doesn’t now think I’ve been eavesdropping on her for however long shes owned that handset.

Making 25k-30k, the adults in the household would NOT qualify for Medicaid medical insurance. And they would qualify for only a small amount of food stamps.

That is not correct benignuman. The Ashkenazi Rishonim/Achronim lived under Christian rule and thus could not publish their Seforim with it saying Christianity is Avoda Zora, as the censors would not allow it.

Welfare receipients must renew/reapply every six months. And a renewal requires all the same information as a new application. Its always been like that.

There are definite downsides to living out-of-town. This is one of the many downsides to living away from a large Jewish community.

Many people, especially shidduch age, move to New York.

Wear a nice shabbos outfit. Most girls don’t wear fancy like wedding.”

Off topic, but why do girls dress nicer for a wedding than they do for Shabbos Kodesh?

Do a kallah and chosson not dress up more than for a typical Shabbos? Clearly the chassunah has a certain sartorial status that begs the wearing of a certain type of clothing. Nonetheless, people SHOULD dress up for Shabbos in their best clothing, even if not wedding style.

A Choson and Kallah are a Melech and Malka. So it is clearly justifiable that they dress up.

But a person should certainly dress up on Shabbos Kodesh more so than for a wedding. Certainly not the reverse.

(Also, some girls want to make Shidduchim, and they will be seen by and converse with more people at the wedding than on a typical Shabbos at Shul)

This is wrong. They shouldn’t be conversing with guys. And they certainly shouldn’t be dressing up for guys. That is as wrong as it gets. And Yeshivish girls are not shopping themselves to men at weddings, G-d forbid. And if they are conversing with other women at the wedding reception who may know someone for them, they certainly do not have to dress to the hilt, or dress to kill, for other women. Dressing as nicely for a wedding as they do for Shabbos Kodesh is certainly more than sufficient. More than that is very wrong.

Clearly these girls are dressing up as they do for all the wrong reasons.

The Chasam Sofer says IF there were extenuating circumstances (i.e. mental illness) that prompted the suicide, then we do not treat it as a halachic suicide. The CS does not exclude the possibility of some cases falling under the halachic penalties prescribed for a suicide.

Wolf, I glanced at your profile and noticed that youve been fascinated with the topic of suicide for years now.

    Why?

There are opportunities that a suicide can do teshuva (not all methods of suicide produce instantaneous death) and yet we still say that they have no chelek in olam habah.

Those type of suicdes, where he may have done teshuva, such as if he sufficates himself with a bag – we in fact do assume he did teshuva (ie after he could no longer remove the bag but was still concious enough to do teshuva). And in such a suicide we dont bury him in the outskirts of the cemetary, as we would if it were an instant suicide.

Suicide isn’t intrinsically worse than murder. Its just that a suicide leaves no opportunity for teshuva, while a murderer can do teshuva.

Someone “considering” suicide c’v can be dissuaded or change his mind. He should not be shunned. Nor should someone considering murder. He should be dissuaded and he should do teshuva.

In theory, sure. Pikuach Nefesh doicha…

And it doesn’t have the issurim of the three shavuos. (Yes, the three oaths are binding, and I’m not going to enter a fruitless debate about them.)

But then again, how “Jewish” is Jewish?

But the fact the zionists first consideration was Uganda as the “Jewish” homeland, demonstrates the zionists complete lack of allegiance to, and despisal of, Torah and Judaism.
