The Officer is Jewish. And the couple used a shadchan as a go-between between dates.
choppyParticipanteman: He should’ve spoken to me first. I had the same idea… and was keeping the world running with my Torah for those 7 hours.
choppyParticipantgavra: No one, not anyone, said the siyum is assur to attend. Even if they didn’t attend themselves, for various reasons. You had everyone attending from Yeshivish/Chasidish/Litvish to MO/Not Frum.
choppyParticipantAs far as the extreme left-wing allegation that shechita is “inhumane” or “tzaar baalei chaim” or air concerns how our holy shochtim treat the animals (aside from being boldfaced lies not to even mention the gedolei yisroel and rabbonim shlita who happily consume meat), this is simply a cover for their sheer apikorsus.
choppyParticipantIn addition to Rambam, Chazal tell us to eat meat.
choppyParticipantMaybe the third party is Jewish too. Although the question arises whether a company that isn’t owned by people who keep halacha or Shabbos is considered Jewish or gentile insofar as the halachas of Taos Akum apply. Anyone?
choppyParticipantIt’s the right thing for Breslover Chasidim.
choppyParticipantIf they are feminists, the most certainly are doing so for very wrong reasons.
choppyParticipantYou are forbidden to hate him or be angry.
choppyParticipantGavra: “Twisted”? It it the human nature of men to notice when a woman is dressed as such. It isn’t twisted. Hence women’s obligation not to dress as such.

August 7, 2012 3:00 pm at 3:00 pm in reply to: can anyone tell me how to change my password? #1184221choppyParticipantOn the top left of your screen it says “Welcome, goldersgreener”. Click on “goldersgreener”. Then click “Edit” on the top right of the screen. Change it there and click “Update Profile”.
choppyParticipantYou are supposed to eat meat on Yom Tov and Shabbos.
choppyParticipantNo such thing is well known among Rav Moshe’s talmidim. Besides that the Igros Moshe says otherwise.
choppyParticipantgavra: Your point is unrelated to the point I made.
choppyParticipantyitay: Re: The A”H. Covering hair is not erva by an unmarried woman, hence the difference between covered hair (by an eishes ish) and something that even unmarrieds should cover due to erva.

Yes, you are required to go to Beis Din, not arkoyos (goyish court).
choppyParticipantThe Igros Moshe says otherwise.
choppyParticipantThere’s nothing wrong with (verbal) bribery, if you’re sure you want to go out again.
choppyParticipantMay all vegetarians return to the ways of the RBS”O soon.
August 6, 2012 3:00 am at 3:00 am in reply to: Adjoining property is doing extension- beam is on my property (residential) #890099choppyParticipantIts easy to make such an invitation knowing you are unknown to the invitee, so he couldn’t accept your fictitious invitation.
August 6, 2012 1:49 am at 1:49 am in reply to: Opening Door to Air Conditioned Room on Shabbos #889818choppyParticipantWhat if you open the window or door with the specific intention of letting out the cold air, since you are too cold?
choppyParticipantEven IF (and I stress “if”) it could “evolve”, so what? You have to do what the minhag is here and now. You can’t decide you’d rather follow some new lenient interpretation.
August 5, 2012 7:54 pm at 7:54 pm in reply to: Adjoining property is doing extension- beam is on my property (residential) #890095choppyParticipantIf it is a Yid, make sure you got to Beis Din. Taking a Yid to arkoyos (goyish court) is a massive aveira. (I think the halacha would even allow someone to kill someone who did that.)
choppyParticipantchocandpatience: That’s how Rashi defines it. (See the Mishna Sotah 20a.)
choppyParticipantAs minimum as possible. Live frugally.
By the way, what was your decision on a prenup?
choppyParticipantRav Kotler WAS mesayim. He gave a Daf Yomi shiur the entire 7.5 year cycle that just completed.
choppyParticipantThe Igros Moshe YD 3:86 says that the Chachamim commanded that women can not be taught Mishna or Gemora since it is oral Torah and it is like teaching them tiflos (promiscuity). However, they can be taught Pirkei Avos since it has Mussar and has hanhagos tovas.
August 5, 2012 3:50 am at 3:50 am in reply to: Why Your Grandchildren will be Eating Pork if They are not Vegetarians #889758choppyParticipantWe didn’t give up Bris Milah under the Soviets. And we won’t give it up under Bloomberg. Nor will we give up shechita.
choppyParticipantThe British burnt down the White House and the U.S. Capitol during the War of 1812.
choppyParticipantWhat if the group was Conservative Jews? It is also often said they had “talmidei chachamim” like Saul Lieberman. Yet the gedolim told us we cannot have anything to do with them.
Perhaps you feel this is different. Obviously some of the gedolim felt it is the same.
choppyParticipantThe time my black hat blew off and I couldn’t catch it from the wind. The busha of walking home without a hat cannot adequately be described.
choppyParticipantSam2: If you’re going with Rav Ovadia, we need to at least be consistent. Make sure she only wears a snood, and never a sheitel. He says that too.
choppyParticipantThe GRA’s spiritual talmidim were there. Almost all the Great Litvishe Gedolim, Talmidim and Hamon Hoam. The GRA referred to specific people in his time, not later generations. (And his talmidim agreed the whole incident was batul, in any event.)
choppyParticipantThank you men for your Limud Torah.
Thank you men for guiding your families.
Thank you men for marrying your wife.
choppyParticipantIf someone dresses non-tznius, but will dress tznius to meet a Rov (or Moshiach), that is an indication that she is dressing non-tznius other times, and should mend her ways.
choppyParticipantRav Vosner mentions a different reason why it is assur. But he doesn’t disagree with this reason as well.
choppyParticipantWolf: 42’s point was that even if someone is smart, does not mean that what they are doing is correct or justified.
choppyParticipantdd: Again, MOST AMERICANS oppose sodomy marriage. 32 States had votes. Sodomy marriage lost in ALL 32 States that held public referendums. We Jews should at least be as opposed to this travesty as non-Jewish Americans clearly are.
Additionally, sodomy is worse than avoda zora. The Gemora says Hashem didn’t destroy the goyim because they didn’t institute civil marriage for sodomites. Even though they did practive avoda zora, he didn’t destroy them, since they didn’t grant legitimate recognition to the sodomites.
choppyParticipantIf the hemline is above the knee, it is almost the same as if she is wearing no skirt at all, just tights. Your argument would be the same. Why does she need any skirt at all if she is wearing tights on her entire legs. Can’t she go outside in tights-only and no skirt? The problem is she is showing her form. It is the same problem if she has only tights and no skirt at all or if she has tights and a skirt with the hemline that is above the knee. In both cases (no skirt and short skirt) she is showing the form of her legs above her knee, and that is not permissible.
choppyParticipantThe War of 1812 was on the American mainland.
choppyParticipantinterjection: What the Torah Temimah is saying is said as much by Rashi in the Mishna Sotah 20a where it says teaching Torah shebalpeh to women leads to tiflus, which Rashi explains means arayos (immorality). The Rambam says so too. And Shulchan Aruch paskens as such.
choppyParticipantWell said, ZeesKite.
choppyParticipantNo one questions the fact that Rashi wrote that Bruria committed suicide.
And the Gemora says Bruria succumbed to sin (almost – the Talmid cancelled at the last moment).
choppyParticipantWait, the OP was asking why can’t a woman wear ONLY tights and NO skirt. That’s absolutely assur. You cannot show the form of the legs.
Mishnah Berurah OC 75:2 – up to and including the knee has to be covered by a skirt at all times. (In all positions – walking, sitting, etc.)
choppyParticipantTur (Yoreh Deah 246:15): Most women’s minds are not geared toward being taught, but if she had begun to study properly herself, not making Torah into foolishness, she is no longer like most women and she is rewarded…
Sefer Hachasidim: One should teach his daughters practical law – not because there is a requirement for them to learn, but so that they should know the laws. Once they know the laws, there is no need for them to learn any more.
Aruch Hashulchan: We have never taught women from a sefer, nor have we ever heard people actually do so. Rather every mother teaches her daughter well-known rules women should know.
Torah Temimah: Girls do not have the intellectual stability and are, therefore, unable to make profound inquries with a sharp mind and appreciate the depth of the Torah. It is possible thay by using their own minds, they will transgress the Torah.
choppyParticipantdd: The gays are publicly proclaiming (by demanding recognition of their status and by publicly proclaiming their so-called “orientation”) that they engage in a violation of the sheva mitzvos. (Mesechtes Chullin 92a.) Furthermore, the gemora specifically says the goyim are NOT permitted to offer civil marriage to homosexuals.
Additionally, the AMERICAN PEOPLE (i.e. the goyim) oppose toeiva marriage. In 32 out of 32 public votes, they always voted it down. We surely can oppose what the goyim in the country rightfully oppose!
choppyParticipantRav Malkiel Kotler spoke in Yiddish, as did Rav Yaakov Perlow, as did the Klausenberger Rebbe, as did the Gerrer Rosh Mesivta – Rav Dovid Olewski, and even Rav Meir Lau partially spoke in Yiddish!
English speakers (among the rabbonim) were HaRav Yitzchok Scheiner, Rav Yissocher Frand, Rav Yaakov Hillel and Rav Yisroel Meir Lau.
That’s 4 Yiddish speaking rabbonim speakers to 4 English speaking rabbonim.
choppyParticipantThe fact that the Gemora brings it (that the walls never saw her hair) as a major maale, proves it is a maale.
Questions as to why it (that the walls never saw her hair) is a maale are fine, so long you recognize that it is in fact a major maale.
choppyParticipantAbove the knee must be covered according to Jewish Law, by every female (when not in private) at all times and for all natural positions and movements (walking, going up stairs, in a wind, in a car, etc.)
It is not merely a custom or a rule that lacks universality.
