    I agree with you 100%

    in reply to: JOBS!!! #809051

    gavra,

but isn’t it at all possible that giving parnassa to a yid will bring enough extra bracha to make up for these inconveniences?

Also, I don’t understand why you would want to be in the position of persuading anyone who reads your post not to hire frum people. I would think that potentially being a cause of another yid not getting a job would not be a great idea right before the yemei hadin when we all ask for a year of parnassa.

    bein hasdorim,

I’ve been here on and off not consistently. But yes, its almost been forever, or at least longer than the CR has been in existence.

There are some active posters who have been here longer than me though.

welcome back beacon! Any other old time posters lurking in the shadows?

Good idea — geographical relocations can do wonders for shalom bayit.

    – charliehall

I actually heard a shalom bayis shiur on tape from a chassidishe rov and he said that one of the reasons why chassidish rebbes/rabbonim have set up a system where young couples usually live near the kalla’s parents rather than near the choson’s parents is because it happens more frequently that the choson’s parents mix in and cause shalom bayis issues. Not being geographically near them will be good for their shalom bayis.

in reply to: If Im the ony one to give complete down payment to children… #800744

It sounds to me like OP resents the mechutan big-time for not contributing to the down payment. Also, in this “us” vs. “them” rivalry, clearly identifies his/her child as being on his/her team and the child in law as being on the mechutan’s team. OP wants to make sure that no money ever gets to the other team which didn’t contribute a dime.

The problem is that the married kids will likely not have much shalom bayis if OP succeeds in making them feel like they need to take sides in their parents fight. They must feel like they are on the same team for their marriage to succeed.

My suggestion to OP is to keep the money and not pay the down payment. Hopefully this way you will have less resentment and your kids will continue to have shalom bayis in a rented home.

My suggestion to the kids (if OP is pushy about taking the down payment) is don’t touch this money with a 10 foot pole and instead pay your landlord’s mortgage in a place which is physically very far from OP. Visiting a few times per year hopefully will not be enough for OP’s attitude to create too much friction between husband and wife.

Oh, and OP, regardless of what happens with the house, if you want to ever have a decent relationship with your child’s spouse, don’t EVER mention in front of them that you consider them less close than a blood relative.

good to “see” you too, squeak!

Are you calling me Mr. Ego Booster as a hint that you need one? Is it because you weren’t nominated as mayor of coffeetown? It can be arranged for a fee, ya know.

Folks! You heard it here first! Joseph is really none other than Rupert Murdoch himself! Wow, who woulda thunk!

If I wasn’t too lazy to look up what orthographic means, I might comment on that one but I think I’ll leave that for haifagirl. Or for someone who will ask whats wrong with conservagraphic rules.

msseeker and KIsh Echad – thanks for your kind words.

giggle – sorry for beating you to it! 🙂

in reply to: In honor of Tisha B'av. What you respect about… #1165130

I respect all the above posters for finding facets of other yidden which they respect and are worthy of respect. Mi K’amcha Yisroel – and we should daven that just as we are finding the good in other jews, so too Hashem should see the good in all of us.

I don’t want to be misunderstood or to break the flow of these wonderful positive posts but there was one post above which I feel needs to be responded to and since nobody else did, I will take it on myself to do so.

Respecting anything and everything is a wonderful thing but it has one danger – that should we respect movements that are anti-torah, perhaps we are inadvertently disrespecting the torah in the process. Of course disrespecting the torah is not the intent, and I sincerely respect ronrsr for his good intentions in trying to find something good in something as bad as the reform movement – a movement which does not believe that the Torah is from Hashem and does not represent Torah or Yiddishkeit. I hope you, ronrsr, will take no offense to this, none is intended. I realize you did not mean to say that you respect them for being anti-Torah, however, as I said, showing them any respect at all would seem to be wrong. Certain things we must fight and not respect. Had the Chasam Sofer and Rav SR Hirsch respected the reform movement, many kehillos would have been lost.

And to be clear, I am talking about reform as a movement, which is what ronrsr referred to. Individual reform jews who never received a Torah education and dont know any better are certainly deserving of our respect, if for no other reason then just for being our brothers and sisters.

I don’t want to hijack this thread and cause the amazing chain of positive posts to end. If anyone else wants to discuss the reform movement I think it would be best to start another thread for that. And again, ronrsr, I truly hope no offense was taken.

To get this thread back on track, I respect all frum teens who, in this day and age, must fight temptations and nisyonos that probably no previous generation has ever had to deal with. This respect is not just for those that pass with flying colors, it is also for those who may be labeled OTD but who try their very hardest – sometimes winning the battle and sometimes unfortunately losing – to do what’s right.

areivim, great to see ya too!! I still haven’t gotten over the shock that you’re not the guy we thought you were. 🙂

ahh, the suspense! Did they know that you’re areivim or just u knew their CR identity? any hints or details at all?

in reply to: roll call #718223

I was a silent partner like areivim until squeak had to ruin it and get me to start posting again. Is moish01 lurking too or did he disappear when he found out that there’s no red beard?

in reply to: Would you stop and pick up a penny? #719936

I agree with eclipse. Years ago some goyim used to throw pennies at jews and if they picked it up they would laugh at the cheap jew.

in reply to: Gift Ideas for Men #1000459

    pba nd aries,

use a more generic term like cost of their maintenance. That includes clothes, jewels, shoes, boots, shoes, handbags and shoes.

in reply to: Stories of Hashgacha Pratis #716296

    popa,

I agree with sister bear. when we repeat a story where the hashgacha was very obvious, it’s not to imply that Hashem only runs the world when the ppl in the story live happily ever after but rather to remind ourselves of the fact that Hashem is running the world, period. That way hopefully we can remember this lesson even in instances where the hashgacha is not so clear.

    squeak,

    I definitely hope so too!

    Imanonov,

why did you post jokes on the sibling rivalry thread. Please stay on topic!

    Oops! My bad!

(I actually thought your 2 jokes are extremely funny, keep ’em coming!)

    blueberry,

will you find it more hilarious or less hilarious if you find out that we aren’t brothers after all?

    in reply to: Jokes #1201466

it definitely is a joke. You know yourself that you’ve at least somewhat grown up since then.

    in reply to: Jokes #1201461

ummm, do u really want me to publicly talk about some of the tricks you’ve played on nice people? I realize that you’ve grown up since then but still.

    in reply to: Jokes #1201459

Dov told me its at Chevy’s house. Weird. Either he was playing a trick on me or you are.

    in reply to: Jokes #1201457

    squeak,

I assumed Chevy had told you about the party so I didn’t think of inviting you, sorry. Looking forward to seeing you there tonight (Wednesday Zos Chanuka). But you are correct that we should be better brothers and get together more often in real life and not just in the CR.

    blueberry,

You didn’t miss it. Its Wednesday night at Chevy’s house.

    in reply to: Jokes #1201452

hey long lost cousin blueberry! there will be a family chanuka party for all descendants of the original Mr. Brown tomorrow night. Please come and bring lots of baked – errr fried – donuts.

    squeak,

and now the mystery is how you know what the dybbuk told Rav Censored. hmm, could you be he?

    in reply to: Jokes #1201446

    blueberry,

I have a better question – how does anyone know the story if both ended up being dead?

in reply to: Why type of car do you have? #714286

    squeak,

you’re old fashioned and stupid for admiring sporty machines that can be used by people over fat, lazy machines that can only be used by cyborgs (or computer assisted humans). Obviously, not a single person here sees your side of it.

    in reply to: Jokes #1201441

    hudi,

that reminds me of another spoof of a torah story: There is a story (which I think is from Chazal if I’m not mistaken, please someone correct me if I’m wrong) that there were 2 brothers who owned adjacent fields. One was poor and had a large family, the other was rich and had no family.

One day the rich brother decided that being that his brother has more mouths to feed he needs more. So at harvest time he went in the middle of the night (so as not to embarras his poor brother) and took some of his own produce and brought it to his brothers field. The poor brother had similar feelings. He said I have been benched with a large family but my brother has not been. Let him at least have some extra produce to somewhat make up for what he’s lacking. In the middle of the night he went and brought some of his own produce to his brother’s field.

This went on for years until one time they met each other while carrying the goods. They each realized what the other had been doing and embraced each other with immense joy and love. On that spot where they embraced, the Bais HaMikdosh would later be built.

    The spoof:

Same 2 brothers one rich with no family, one poor with large family. Only in this story the poor one decided that since he has so many mouths to feed he deserves more than his brother, so he went nightly to his brother’s field and stole some produce. The rich brother similarly said – my brother doesn’t deserve a large family AND lots of produce; if I don’t have a family at least let me get some extra produce to make up for it. He too went nightly to steal some produce from his brother.

This went on for years until one time they met each other while carrying the goods. They each realized what the other had been doing and they attacked and killed each other. On that very spot, the Israeli Knesset would later be built.

    popa,

not everyone can just do it by simply making up their minds. Some people have very slow metabolism or other issues beyond their control which make it waaaaay harder than just simply deciding to do it.

in reply to: Airports – Full Body Scanners #711315

yes we live in desperate times, i agree 100%. I just don’t believe that TSA’s scanners and new pat downs are the answer to the desperate times. As far as I’ve heard, the pat downs are only for opt-outs of the scanners but in airports which don’t have the scanners yet there are no patdowns either. If they are so necessary for security, then why aren’t they done in those airports too? It would seem the only purpose of the new pat down is to get people to go thru the scanners.

The real solution is to profile and then thoroughly frisk those who are deemed high risk, not to just randomly frisk 20% of the people and then there is an 80% chance that the terrorist won’t be the one who is randomly selected. But of course profiling will never fly here. oh well.

in reply to: Airports – Full Body Scanners #711310

    oomis,

people were only doing their job. Molesting children is wrong and doing your job is not much of an excuse. Did you see that video on the YWN homepage of the TSA agent molesting a young boy? I would never take my kids on a plane until the situation changes.

also, its not desperate times that call for these desperate measures. its corrupt politics that called for these desperate measures. The head of El Al security said he could go thru these scanners with enough explosives to bring down a 747. Israel doesn’t use them because they can’t find many of the plastic explosives that terrorists are likely to try to use. But Chertoff, the former head of homeleand security, is making millions on them as the lobbyist for the company that the TSA is buying them from. I wonder if any kickbacks have made their way to the current heads of homeleand security.

attention frum women (and their husbands and fathers),

the TSA in their wisdom seems to have decided that any female in a skirt is probably a terrorist and needs to go thru a pat down to make sure their skirt is not hiding any explosives.
