If you know of a good Jewish adoption resource please ask the mods to give you my e-mail address. Thanks!
ChanieEParticipantThere are great 9-5 accounting jobs in corporate America. I don’t about E”Y but I would imagine the situation is similar.
ChanieEParticipantYour homeowners insurance may prohibit trampolines, or the premiums may go up if you have one.
January 8, 2012 2:57 am at 2:57 am in reply to: Very disturbing, please only kind people read. #842276ChanieEParticipantI wish you and your family hatzlacha!!!
ChanieEParticipantMy daughter is at Darchei Bina and she is having a FANTASTIC year B”H! She’s a very conscientious student (valedictorian, not that I’m bragging 🙂 ) and very “normal” frum (tzniusdik Ts and denim skirts).
The girls cook and they learn from each other so to me, having only one meal a day is a plus. (Not the money, of course, but the experience. And what’s a 20-plus thousand dollar year about if not experience?)
Where are your daughter’s friends going? Is there anyone in her HS who can provide guidance?
ChanieEParticipantMs. Critique – No hard feelings 🙂
ChanieEParticipantCommonsense – excellent explanation!
Ms. Critique – I can tell you exactly what it’s like to live in a bracket where taxes are almost more than take home pay! That’s why the cheating bothers me so much. My taxes keep going up up up to make up the shortfall from everyone who doesn’t pay. I’m paying more to cover my neighbors who BRAG (no shame at all!) about cheating on their taxes. And don’t get me started on cheating on taxes with cash, both by being paid off the books and not paying sales tax if you pay cash.
ChanieEParticipantSimple. What you are doing “wrong” is living in an expensive high-tax city and earning salaries as opposed to running your own business so you can illegally deduct personal expenses.
Considering that your jobs are in/near Brooklyn, I would not suggest moving. Commuting is very expensive, aside from being very hard on the commuter and his/her family, and the surrounding areas are also insanely expensive.
ChanieEParticipantLe Chocolat truffles (Monsey) beat Godiva hands down and the shopping experience there is so much more pleasant than buying a box at Macy’s. For less-expensive but still absolutely delicious chocolate I go with Schmerling. To me, the advantages of non chalav yisrael are price and availability but not taste.
ChanieEParticipant“MASA Israel journey is a project of the Government of Israel and Jewish communities around the world, represented by the Jewish Agency for Israel and its partners, United Jewish Communities / the Federations of North America, and Keren Hayesod – UIA.”
They offer a small grant that is not needs-based, and they also offer scholarships.
American financial aid programs could probably be used if the student is enrolled in an American school, even if they take the classes elsewhere.
ChanieEParticipantNot qualifying for financial aid means earning too much to be considered poor and get some help, but not rich enough to afford the lifestyle we would like!
I wish I could pop over and visit my daughter (and E”Y, where I haven’t been in close to 20 years), but we’re scrimping to make our tuitions and we don’t have a spare few thousand dollars.
ChanieEParticipantShout out to Dr. Hall, my son and the other volunteer firefighters who have been out since last night, and all other emergency workers, road crews, utility crews, meteorologists, news reporters & everyone else working to keep us safe, keep us informed and get us back to normal!
August 26, 2011 2:33 pm at 2:33 pm in reply to: have to shake hands with men who are strangers :( #802149ChanieEParticipantI smile and say “sorry, I don’t shake hands with men for religious reasons” and that seems to go over OK. Sometimes the guy will apologize and I’ll reassure him that he didn’t do anything wrong, I wouldn’t expect him to anticipate my religious practices.
ChanieEParticipantMatisyahu’s Dispatch the Troops. Very poignant – it’s about us and our kids and us and our relationship with our Father and begging for Moshiach.
ChanieEParticipantWhen I’ve been in similar situations I’ve gone to the restaurant and just had Coke. Everyone in the group knows I’m not eating for religious reasons but I’m still being a team player.
I would not feel comfortable eating kosher food in a non-kosher restaurant because I would not want to be seen eating there.
July 24, 2011 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm in reply to: Should one mourn the death of a Jew no matter who? #789081ChanieEParticipantI think it’s appropriate to mourn the loss – the waste of a life. She wasn’t evil – she was very troubled, and I hope she is finally at peace.
July 22, 2011 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm in reply to: What special Shabbos dish are you making today? #789394ChanieEParticipant“Beer can” chicken.
can black cherry soda
whole chicken
oil
herbs and pepper
1. Wash can very well. Open can, pour out about 1/3 of the soda, use a can opener to poke a couple more holes in the top of the can. Put can in foil-lined pan.
2. Mix oil and seasonings then rub inside and outside chicken, including under skin where possible.
3. “Sit” chicken securely on can.
4. Bake
I made this a few weeks ago and it was absolutely delicious but I don’t recall the time/temp so I’m going to make it up … Try 350 for 2 hours.
ChanieEParticipantBaguettes were all the rage when I was in seminary many years ago, so to me, baguettes just seem milchig. If you want to include “baguette” to differentiate yourself from a standard burger joint, I second Baguette Grill.
Please let us know when and where you open!
ChanieEParticipantI’ve used kali tzom with success. They are not caffeine or asprin – they contain herbs (I think they you not lose water as quickly so you don’t dehydrate). Maybe it’s psychological – I don’t care! It worked!
ChanieEParticipantDon’t forget geothermal. We would have to cut down all the trees around our house just to get some sun but we can dig without disturbing much.
ChanieEParticipant> Now the question is, why don’t pizza stores charge tax?
For the same reason people think they don’t have to pay tax if they pay in cash or have their items shipped out of state.
ChanieEParticipantCabbage Beef soup (also delicious on the blech for Shabbos day)
Sorry I don’t have any measurements
beef stew
shredded cabbage
carrots, peeled & sliced
large can diced tomatoes
fresh or dry dill
fresh celery or dry celery seed
bay leaves
juniper berries (if available – smash with side of a heavy knife or bottom of a glass then put in tea ball or piece of cheesecloth)
thyme
coriander
salt
pepper
Put all ingredients in a large pot, add lots of water, cook for hours, enjoy!
June 16, 2011 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm in reply to: Yet another tznius issue (but probably not a crisis) #778260ChanieEParticipantYou don’t all have to agree this is a problem but why are you mocking OP?
ChanieEParticipantHere’s a DELICIOUS tried and true recipe:
Parve Brownie Cheesecake
Brownie:
6 oz. bittersweet chocolate (I prefer Alprose baking choco)
3/4 cup oil
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 cup flour
1/4 cup chocolate chips
Cheesecake:
2 packages parve cream cheese (Tofutti brand)
2 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. lemon juice
2 tsp. vanilla
Preheat the oven to 350.
Brownie:
Melt the chocolate in a double broiler or microwave (very carefully!) and set aside.
Mix oil, sugar and eggs. Add vanilla and chocolate and mix again. Sift the flour and mix into chocolate. (I do this by hand – no mixer necessary.)
Pour brownie batter into pan (9″ springform or whatever is handy) and sprinkle the chocolate chips on top.
Cheesecake:
Whip the “cream cheese” then add other ingredients. (I use a mixer for this part.) Pour over the brownie bottom.
Bake for 15 minutes. Lower the temperature to 325 and bake for another 30 to 40 minutes, until the top starts to brown. Turn off the oven and leave the cake inside for an hour after it’s baked. Cool on the counter then refrigerate at least 6 to 7 hours before serving.
I usually place a paper towel on top of the cheesecake before refrigerating (to prevent water from accumulating on the top) and I then cover the cake with Saran wrap or foil.
ChanieEParticipantAny update?
ChanieEParticipantLand for peace is a great idea. How about this: The Arabs give up all claims to Greater Israel, including the Golan Heights, Yehuda, Shomron & Aza, and in return Israel agrees not to blow up buses, fire rockets into civilian centers or murder families in their beds.
While we’re at it … Two-state solution? Excellent idea! We get Greater Israel and they can have Jordan. Or Syria. Or Iraq. Or Saudi Arabia. Or whatever. We’re not picky!
ChanieEParticipantWe cannot rely on stores to make sure we only purchase kosher l’Pesach foods.
Let’s say a store has dedicated Pesach aisles and refrigerator/freezer cases and they are careful when they stock the shelves and they verify that the Pesach order really contains only Pesach food and everything is great before the first customer walks in – who is responsible for making sure a “helpful” shopper doesn’t put something back in the wrong section?
ChanieEParticipantThis is such a beautiful thread. My bracha is that merit of all this achdus should finally bring the geulah!
ChanieEParticipant“Normal” of course 🙂
April 1, 2011 6:06 pm at 6:06 pm in reply to: Live out of town and I need (fresh affordable) food for Pesach #755125ChanieEParticipantDepending on how far you are from a major frum area, it may pay to take a day trip to do your shopping.
ChanieEParticipantNo need to go all the way to Africa for some meat … Rockland Kosher (Monsey, NY) sells biltong.

ChanieEParticipantWhy “should” a female teacher “only be the second source of income in her home”? Suddenly it’s a husband’s job to support his family?
ChanieEParticipantBeing m’sameach people is a mitzvah!
ChanieEParticipantDo you toast the seaweed before using it? Carefully hold it over the stove (lit, obviously!), moving it around so it doesn’t burn – that will enhance the flavor.
I usually spread chrayonnaise over the seasoned/vinegared rice, then top with lox or other smoked or otherwise ready to eat fish.
ChanieEParticipantI was wondering because I didn’t get my usual Friday e-mails.
ChanieEParticipantFast Forward:
Hello hello hello sir.
Meet me at the grocer.
No sir.
Why sir.
Because I have a cold sir.
Where did you get the cold sir?
At the North pole sir.
What were you doing there sir?
Catching polar bears, sir.
How many did you catch sir?
One sir
Two sir
Three sir …
Now that I’m a parent, I can’t imagine my mother was too happy about what our knee socks looked after using them to play ball!
ChanieEParticipantMy local police department (Ramapo) had a specially trained officer who showed me how to install it. You want to push the car seat down into the car’s seat as much as possible – he suggested I put my knee on the seat to use my body weight to hold it down.
ChanieEParticipantEither you’re waaay over 40 or I forgot most of my childhood 🙂
February 13, 2011 7:09 pm at 7:09 pm in reply to: Any ideas for a good entree to serve Purim? #739868ChanieEParticipantSince we serve “hidden” foods, how about chicken or beef wrapped in puff pastry, like beef Wellington?
ChanieEParticipantSorry to tell you this, but if you put your marriage on hold until your kids are married, you won’t have a relationship to recharge or reconnect – you’re going to have to undo the damage from decades of neglect. The best thing you can do to prepare your kids for marriage is show them that you and your husband cherish your marriage and each other, and that includes spending time without the kids.
Leaving the kids with Savta is fantastic for all involved! The kids get an adventure, Savta gets to spoil them without you looking on in disapproval, and you and DH come back refreshed & reenergized.
ChanieEParticipantI love serving pieces (bowls, platters, spoons, spreaders, etc.) and I have found great stuff at Home Goods/Marshalls/TJ Maxx. They are all part of one chain – Home Goods has the largest selection of serving pieces but the others usually have interesting items too.
ChanieEParticipantMilchig truffles from Le Chocolat (the store, not the supermarket brand). They are THE BEST (better than Godiva, for those who care) and by bringing milchigs to a Shabbos seudah you are making it clear that the gift is for the hostess and not something you expect her to share. Unless the meal you come for is breakfast 🙂
January 14, 2011 3:22 am at 3:22 am in reply to: If I had it all to do over, I'd do _______________ for Parnasa #729495ChanieEParticipantI’m a lawyer working in taxes. I like the field (which I never thought I would be in) but if I would have known where I would end up I would have gotten my accounting degree and saved $$$ on grad school.
ChanieEParticipantI think uniforms are terrible chinuch. They create an artificial boundary between school and home and they don’t teach girls anything about how to dress.
(From someone who never wore a uniform and sends her daughters to a school without one.)

January 4, 2011 11:42 am at 11:42 am in reply to: Tipping a delivery boy – Mandatory or Optional? #920236ChanieEParticipantThe minimum wage for certain employees is lower (by several dollars) than the usual minimum wage so although you are not the employer, you are expected to pay part of the worker’s wages directly, not just indirectly as customers do in most industries.
From the NYS Department of Labor:
Some industries make allowances for tips; thus they set a lower hourly rate. For example, food service workers may earn $4.65 per hour because their total compensation includes expected tips.
ChanieEParticipantHow about women start paying when they earn $1 for every $1 men earn? Or after men start having babies, which will probably come before equal pay for equal work.
ChanieEParticipantB’sha’a tovah 1030 & Mazel tov, Oomis!
ChanieEParticipantThinkFun (formerly Binary Arts) makes great single-player games and puzzles, including Rush Hour, Solitaire Chess, TipOver, Izzi and all sorts of other fun stuff.
