    HI jmj613.

If what you heard was true, that person has a very negative, overgeneralized opinion that she should keep to herself.

Anytime you hear someone speak so generally like that, you have to take what they say with a grain of salt.

Especially, if you think the girls were raised in that kind of family and culture, what does this lady mean to say they will “regret that kind of life”? Nonsense!

An opinion like that is not based on an individual circumstance and should not be spewed to everyone at large.

On the other hand, a girl should not think that if she marries someone who learns AND works, or learns and develops a career, that there is a problem with that. But hopefully the two will be so close they will not be influenced by what others tell them to think about each other.

    Hi Ferd.

Who cares how long it takes for news to reach someone! Have you not heard of “history”? News never expires.

    Anyway:

I hope it is not insurance fraud. That is all I can say.

I am not sure why they once believed it was arson and now they think it’s insurance fraud. Could be an anti-semitic spin, could be true.

    HI zeena.

I think this is a great place to acquire information. It has the potential of a great random sampling from among all kinds of members of our community.

If someone does not have much to contribute to any given topic, fine. But how can someone predict a poster will not find what they are looking for? Makes no sense.

Hatzlacha in finding the information you need to help you make a decision.

    Hi JewishHocker.

    This is a two-fold problem, I guess.

For the first part, I saw an interesting concept being used in Lakewood. It’s like a buddy system. You buddy up with someone who will get a report of all the sites visited, and vice versa. Knowing your “buddy” will know the sites surfed, will help prevent accidently looking into things out of curiosity, etc.

The second part of the problem is searching for something innocent, and then the search engine brings you to a site that is no good at all. Those kinds of filters are not perfect. Even something like Youtube where you want to look up the performance of a Jewish singer, anyone can type in the comments, and you can find foul language in the comments of even cartoony things that the kids like to go to.

Because of such things like this, in truth, those giving extreme warnings about internet, are correct. The way I see it, and correct me if I am wrong, a person never using the internet IS cleaner than if that same person used the internet even with the best of care.

    Hi Moderators.

The news today, January 12th, reads that a US aircraft carrier strike group has moved into the Arabian Sea. Another one is on the way. And that the US denies any link to Iran’s threat to block the Strait of Hormuz – the world’s most important oil shipping lane. So can we get on with other important business and get real-brisker’s old account unblocked?

    Seriously.

Are there less than a dozen threads where you are not relentlessly taking more than one person to task over and over again?

I would normally not be so bold to confront, but since you are accustomed to “in your face” posting, I would like to make a suggestion that if someone holds a different view than you, it does not mean the person means anything personal, or that they didnt understand what you said, which sometimes is not as clear or accurately representative of what you are trying to say, believe it or not.

I know you are not shooting for the idea that if someone does not share a specific view of yours, that it must mean they just didnt get what you are talking about.

That would be a component of fascism.

    Hi arwsf.

We HAVE to be kindred spirits..lol

I also have my “Tomorrow I am gonna start…..” and then there is the chocolate I sneak in since

I was good for a few hours, usually followed by something salty.

And on Shabbos and Purim, it is SO easy to “go for it” and worry about it on Monday. lol

That diet I talked about is great, and easy to follow, if you prepare ahead of time. Sometimes you eat more than you want to, but they recommend you still eat every three or so hours. It is great for losing weight and feeling great.

I learned about it from where I workout these days. I do MMA with a great organization created by an Israeli fighter. I am not sure if I can mention his name here. They have locations throughout NY, NJ, CT, and one in Florida.

When I follow that diet, I can really get into the very intense workout. When I dont, I am sucking wind within a matter of 10 minutes.

I truly enjoy the challenge of eating right, sleeping right, too, and acquiring skill in mixed martial arts.

They did their research, and while I am sure there are many good diets out there, I dont even see this as a diet. Its more like you can eat, but carefully choose what you eat, and its really not so bad.

At this point, if I psychologically crave junk, and give in and eat it, I dont feel so good as soon as I finish. I try to remember that and I have much more control now.

Fitness and diet are a life-long “hobby” so I think we all wax and wane a bit. Like anything else, to the degree we commit, is the degree we benefit. I have to focus on the benefits I want.

Oh, another thing. If I have it in the house, I will eat it. So I dont buy snacks. It’s usually on Shabbos that I go off my eating pattern. I am not sure how to get past the challah rolls at the meals I am gratefully invited to. I dont want to waste any of it and leave any over.

Oh, to answer your question about what makes me into it, is that I am the kind of person that benefits if I put effort into something and experiences the consequences if I dont exert effort.

Also, in my workout, once I am there, on the mat, they get you going, sorta like marine boot camp. You have no option to walk out, like you could at a gym. By the end of the workout, about an hour, I feel awesome, BH.

Also, the instructor is a very special person. I would say the he, along with my Rabbi, seriously, are the two best supports I have to making the most out of this gift of life. In their separate ways, my life would not be the same without their influence. I am hugely grateful to both of them.

As to your question as to why I am so into it. I would say, be’H, I have been growing a good deal in my efforts for spiritual and physical well-being. I guess I have a greater awareness of being alive?

You give me something to think about.

I hear there is a shidduch crisis, but the crisis is not exactly 9/11.

There must be SOME stories of inspiration! Perspiration?

inspiring and we singles can all learn from that.

    Hi arwsf.

You bring up a good point.

I think in general this medium is one of quick reaction and a, more or less, spontaneous stream of consciousness kind of thing.

I am sure there are many, depending on the post and interest in that post, who take the time to read the entire thread and carefully craft their response.

For me, after there are about 3 pages, I probably have not read the thought evolution of all three pages.

Anything more than that, way more than that, I may jump on and comment on a post that I am sure has been thoroughly worked.

And I am sure there is misunderstanding all over the place as we are only dealing with the written word.

Aside from that, I dont post based on the person. For me, it is solely on the topic of the idea they expressed.

There are some people one can feel more in line with, and others not so, or way out of line with. But for me, I dont really know much about anybody here in real life, so if there is someone I really dont bond with, for example, it’s still all good, and I will post to them depending on the content of their point.

You are making me think that there are more dynamics going on here than just posting to ideas, too. I can think of a few things about the “culture” or “sociology” of the Coffee Room, which can range from being supportive and sincere all the way to cliquish and ulterior-motive related. But such is the way of people in general. lol

    Nice post!

    Hi Sam2.

There is a saying that someone went to their doctor telling them they were depressed. The doctor asked the patient to tell them what was on their mind. When the patient discussed what was on his mind, the doctor responded that of course you are depressed if those things are on your mind.

We dont eat everything we see. We use discretion about what we take into our body.

Certainly, there is a lot in life that is unpleasant, and there is a reason for that. But we can also use discretion in what we allow ourselves to absorb in life.

For me, there are new stories that I no longer want to read. It is too heartbreaking to read about what happens to people from criminal demons.

One time I read that Rabbi Avigdor Miller, zatzal, said to use discretion about what you read about in the news, because once you expose yourself to something, it is in you.

Others also talk about distracting yourself from negative thoughts, even if they are valid, and put effort into more of the positive things.

It takes effort to put effort into overseeing what we think about and how it makes us feel, and to cultivate a new habit of focusing on the positive and enjoyable, but it also takes effort to endure unpleasantness.

Life is an active participation sport, and if we are on auto-pilot, who knows where we can end up?

    Hi Health.

While literally one can quit smoking any time. The implications that at any time it would all good to quit, is not a good recommendation.

Someone does not have forever to quit, so to speak. There is a point where it would be chas veshalom too late.

And telling an addicted person something where they feel they can procrastinate a bit alluding to the point there is “always” time, is misleading and not so correct, and actually feeds into the addicts inclination to postpone quitting.

The message should be to quit now. Even if that message has to be repeated later, and later again. ….quit now.

    Hi cleverjewishpun and Raphael Kaufman.

Of course much of this is subjective. But, I still feel the “deep south” is historically then, and still now, more hostile to Jews, among others, than the rest of the country, in general.

There used to be a famous Jewish radio guy I used to listen to in the car. You may have heard of Barry Farber.

He told a true story in a light-hearted, friendly way about his travels in the south, as a Jewish radio celebrity.

He said that one time he came across a very nice, much older couple who showed a good deal of southern hospitality when they went to meet him at a book signing.

They said they listened to him for years, politely invited him over for dinner, saying they would be honored, and he accepted.

As they all sat down to eat, the sweet, innocent older lady declared, “Barry, because you are Jewish, we are not having any pork for dinner. So, instead, I made us a nice ham.”

    lol..

    Hi PBA.

Your thread touches on a good point on an overlooked factor in these situations.

The laws, and for good reason, favor the mother in regards to custody of the children.

But what about the cases where the husband/father is the one who is correct and is the better parent, and who did nothing wrong?

The man knows divorce would mean about a 90% reduction in being in the lives of his children, and for many men, even if they are the “bad”ones, that is a devastating thought and can be an eventual reality that many men do not ever get over.

Someone has to develop a fool proof plan to repair the bond between two people who once looked to seeing each other with great excitement, but now are ripping each others lives apart.

Maybe, there is a way for spouses to check in with someone to report how they feel theirr marriages are going before they sink to the point of no return.

    Very sad!

    Hi yenting.

I have not doubt that your view on smoking is right on target, and understand it’s deleting because our community’s smoker are purely ignorant on the subject.

I just posted this a few minutes ago on another thread:

“I cannot tell you how many people in our community will argue that smoking is really ok and helps them to relax and is not so bad because its the only “bad: thing they do.

At least in the outside world they admit they should quit, have tried numerous times, and that it will probably kill them.

Not only that, but there is evidence that from the first puff, permanent genetic mutations can take place that can chas veshalom affect the smokers children to be born at some time in the future.

I just dont get it. Smoking, (even more than texting and internet), should be declared a sakana; period! Kosher phone; kosher mind;…… kosher body!””

Yinting. I dont know why so many in our community, the smartest on earth, support, yes, support the idea of cigarettes.

One would think due to the terrible rise in illness, that in addition to checking tznius, tefillin, middos, etc, people should be told to remove cigarettes from their lives.

    Hi mikehall12382.

Let me put it to you this way: If you had to be pulled over by law enforcement at 1am with your yarmulke and tzit tis and all, would you prefer, A. New York, B. New Jersey, or C. Tennessee?

All them states down there ARE weird and the rest of the country knows it.

In fact, someone once said that if a UFO landed in America and the president gave the alien leader a tour, they would lock up some of those states in their room, so as not to embarrass the rest of the country.

Far as I am concerned, you can add Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, South Carolina, and a few others to that list.

Also, no one was criticizing the Jewish communities down there, which you seem to feel you had to defend as being lovely, which we are all sure they are.

Perhaps it is the traveling and distance of the other side of the family that is a concern. Sometimes, from what I hear, after the marriage settles in, the partner who moves far sometimes has issues with not being near their family. That is not always the case though.

Also, I dont understand how people can assume someone from another part of the country may be right for them. Maybe someone can explain.

    Hi HaLeiVi.

Thank you. I wrote that down and I will keep that in mind.

I think many Jews at some stage in their learning should know the facts of the xtianity “fraud” instead of seeing it as some mysterious thing they are not suppose to believe in.

In fact, one time I saw graffiti in NY which read, “Xtianity, the biggest fraud perpetrated on Western Civilization.” As Pinchus or Pesach Simon wrote, “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls; and tenement halls…..”

Tragically, many frei yidden are so exposed to the idea of yushke as being a “cool dude”, they feel it is necessary to hold him in some esteem and accept some admiration for him as part of their bagel and lox Jewry.

On deeper thought, the crowd who is drawn to Shmuely will probably benefit in gaining some truth, if he does in fact have the courage to state the truth in his very endearing and friendly way.

There is a crowd that is very drawn to R’ Boteach, and perhaps he is using his fame well, although stylizing things for that crowd, which makes sense career-wise.

It’s amazing, in light of what we know about cigarettes, that they are still allowed to sell those things.

I heard there were about 70 known poisons that come from smoking cigarettes. And now, they found the soil for tobacco growth is infiltrated with radon. That means, and correct me if I am wrong, if someone smokes, they are inhaling radiation into their lungs. As far as I know, that does not dissipate easily, if at all.

I heard there is a way to remove the radon, but since that also removes the nicotine, the tobacco companies are not employing any methods to remove radon from the soil of their plants.
