i have a brother who went to college and graduate school. he has loans that he needs to pay back so he and his wife both need to work to get by. another brother is in kollel and his wife is home taking care of the kids. how does that work? everyone’s situation is different – kollel doesn’t necessarily mean the wife has to work. and working doesn’t mean the wife is always free to be home for the kids.

and just a side point: many wives whose husbands work are STILL not home for the kids. they spend their lives shopping. so maybe they SHOULD go to work. at least they’d be doing something productive.

i must say that they’re right in saying that texting and internet are worse than talking. not that i’m condoning talking. it’s terrible. but there are still things poeple would say through texting that they wouldn’t say aloud. vehamevin yavin.

no but joseph, they forgot that it’s POSSIBLE to talk on a phone. the only issues that matter to them are internet and texting. (i’m not even so sure about that)

joseph you’re right but how often do the wives of working men go out and get another job? it’s definately not ideal, but it’s not like it’s either the husband or the wife.

we don’t assume here! maybe someone’s kid is stupid enough to do it! (my kid would be smarter :-)) or maybe it’ll happen by accident. my point is, whatever the reason, after the effect there’s not much a parent could do.

i’m female so don’t exactly know what learning entails, but sounds like it’s more strenuous than most other jobs. (i have brothers in kollel and brothers who work and that’s the feedback i get.) how realistic is it to demand 15 hours from a guy! even a the best guys would find that impossible, no?

BYM very often it’s not enough.

it’s not like they’re doomed. but it’s a risk. the likelihood of one or more of the kids going off is very high. i know a few families that suffered from this, even though they had the right intentions. and there’s no saying “let’s try it and if it doesn’t work we’ll move back.” what’s done is done.

i must agree. i live in brooklyn (as you can all see) and i’ve been to the one here a number of times. there’s nothing like yad vashem, though. i actually just visited yad vashem in israel for the firt time, a year ago.

maybe one of you know: i once heard that you’re not supposed to go to them often. i may not recall properly but i think i heard that the ones in israel or DC shouldn’t be visited more than once. has anyone ever heard something similar?

    A few points:

    1) How hard is it for a kid to find out his parent’s social security numbers? Not very. And with that they have unlimited access.

    4) Very nice that you look at the bill every month. But like I already said, if your child activates something without your knowledge, EVEN if you check it every month, you’re already too late. The goal is to prevent; not to threaten or punish.

    5) Many things can destroy a child. Some things we could control, and some we can’t. Parents have to do their best.

first of all, i think you’re forgetting what the main function of a phone is. you can TALK on it. wow. that took a genius to figure out. second, if your kid activates anything on his/her phone, even if you anylize the bill at the end of the month, you might not know about it till a month later. that’s 30 days too late. (and chances are you’re not checking it EVERY month… so how many months could go by??? who knows???)

    and for you illini07:

you’re right. maybe our standards are different. but where do you draw the line? they can talk to guys, but not hang out? or maybe they could hang out, but not be careful about negia? or is that ok too?! you don’t know how far kids could go. or maybe you do and you’re ignoring it?

i’m not exactly daas torah but i believe you have to make a decision as to where you want to raise your children before they grow up. moving a child to the other end of the world can be very disorienting and many teenaged kids tend to stray when put in that situation. it works the other way around, too. kids that come to america don’t have it easy here either.

if you’ve ever taken economics, the middle class is always the worst off. they pay the highest taxes (proportionally) while those who earn less get tax exemptions and aid from the government. often, people in the yeshiva world don’t understand that, though. they assume that if you’re working you MUST make money, (which means you MUST be loaded…)

really? you’d really watch your kids kill themselves spiritually and not try to intervene, just so that they can learn from their mistakes? i’m all for letting kids make mistakes. but don’t know what’s at steak here. most kids are not malicious. things just happen. and parents should try to prevent those things from happening.

    and illini07

i didn’t say a cell phone is bad. but in the wrong hands it can be detrimental. i don’t know what i’d do now without a phone. i wark crazy hours and i practically live in my car. but don’t kid yourself into thinking that teenagers need phones.

listen, i could give the whole other side too. i mean, i managed to convince my parents to get me one in 10th grade, right? but now i’m speaking honestly and from unfortunately experience.

ok so there’s a difference if a kid is in school out of town. when i was in israel i had no choice. but the nisayon doesn’t leave – it just happens to be that by the time i left home, i was more or less out of that stage.

    illini07

who do you expect to tell you what’s REALLY going on out there? 40-year-olds who are just as clueless as you are? or a 40-year-old that you decide not to listen to? well you can’t exactly ignore this. i’ve been there. i went to a VERY frum bais yaakov, have an EXCELLENT name (i don’t know how i managed to keep that one up!) and i know what goes on. our parents weren’t stupid, they were uninformed. i wasn’t the only one(though the other girls have no idea that i was doing the same things as them. Edited .) it was basically a ticket to do whatever we wanted as long as we hid it well.

in short: i had a phone in school. there is no way in the world i’d let my kid have his/her own phone. at MOST i’d have a spare phone in the house just in case one of them needs it in an emergency situation. but a private one? no way!

oh an btw: for all you naive people: there are a million ways to go about unblocking the internet. and i figured out how to do it within 30 after i tried.

either your children are angels or you’ve got no idea what’s going on. in general though, at best they lead to laziness and wasting of time. at worst… we all know what goes on. (if you don’t, unfortunately i can fill you in really well…) but honestly, i’m not out of school that many years. there is hardly a teenager alive who’s not obsessed with his/her phone. and it’s insanely unhealthy. never mind physically (though that’s a huge deal, too) I don’t know what kind of bubble you’re living in, but it would probably do you some good to pop out of it and face the real world.

Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky used to smoke. The moment he found out that it MIGHT be unhealthy, he went cold turkey. In europe it was normal to smoke and no one knew of any related health issues. things have changed, however. Rav Yaakov was very disturbed when a bachur would smoke.
