and for everybody’s information: rav SR Hirsch was not modern orthodox. he may have been controversial in his time, as was Sarah Schenirer but they never compromised on halacha. The Ba’al Shemtov too. there’s nothing wrong with rabbonim allowing and promoting adapting to the generation. we’re not amish, we’re Jewish. an egotistic person thinks “i’m better than you.” they’re confidence is based on how much better they are than the next guy.
high self-esteem is just – i’m special because i use the talents God gave me. and yes, when i do something better than the next guy it’s cuz God made me more capable in this area. and when someone does something better than me – mine is still great – even if i got a 95 and he got a 100.

it’s a fine line. i think i have it down pat. don’t worry – i’m not a person who assumes everything is ok. i’ve spoken to a rav about it. he said “keep it up!” lol i’ll be honest – i used to have a crushed self-esteem- while i was messing up in high school (before and afterward too). it took me a little while to build myself up again. now i’m probably more healthy than most people in that area. don’t worry – i’m ok!

oh and i know that comment was full of sarcasm, but yes, many of those3 things should be approved beforehand. what’s the big deal? if it’s not gonna be a problem then what’s the harm in asking? ten minutes talking to a rav? what a zchus! and if you think it might be a problem then you had BETTER ask!

Yanky55 – once they’re out there fighting yes, we need to pray for them. they’re our brothers. the same way we need to pray for female soldiers – even though it is COMPLETELY assur for a girl to join the army. but that doesn’t mean we agree with it.
i say – if it would stop the arabs from killing Jews – give them the whole land. a jewish life is much more important. (and yes i LOVE the land. i’m obsessed.)

also, you should know that not everyone’s local rabbi is so frum. dunno what to tell them because they still need guidance.

BTW – until the haskala kicked in there was nothing else but ultra orthodox. that’s when they first had a need to become more open minded. rav shimshon raphael hirsch was NOT even CLOSE to modern orthodox. he simply understood the needs of the generation. but what was before that? and what did he create? i highly doubt either of those things is what MO is now.
