I normally rush to the defense of people who are ready to start fresh. And while I don’t know the particulars of this specific case, I’ll still give the benefot of the doubt and say that this person is truly sorry for what had been done in the past, and does deserve to be treated as a “new” person.
That said (and meant) the next comment is directed at Oomis’s post. While a “baal teshuva” is to be viewed as an equal, in many cases, bochurim from the “brand name” yeshivos will take walk on the wild side with the attitude, I can always come clean, and no one will be the wiser (or so they convince themselves).
Saddest part of all? The person they are hurting most is themselves, That, and the fact that the very girls with whom they had spent time with as a teen, would be rejected outright if the girl had the same “teshuva” stirrings as a young adult.
So while everyone deserves a 2nd chance, it really bears looking at the whole picture to know if the guitly party might really be guilty.
bptParticipantWhere you daven. (and if you don’t have a set place, PICK ONE, ASAP) as that will enable people to see you in your best setting. Especially, if you’re still in yeshiva, as when anyone goes to scope you out in the BM, you are among 100+ guys just like you.
At this point in life, you want to be the focus of attention, not part of the herd.
Personally, I would scratch “height”. Its (IMHO) irrelevant, both on your part and on hers. Weight, you can (to some extent)control, height is a fact.
bptParticipantI was thinking, its more like which day Rosh Chodesh is declared. The “day of the week” is unchanged; its only the “date” that is getting moved.
That’s if they followed the teachings of Chazal. If they just skipped a day, then they are stam nuts.
bptParticipantEat the latkes. After all, you’re sick anyways, so you have little to lose.
And latkes might just help the situation, so its a win-win setting if I ever saw one.
bptParticipant” the voice of reason closes the thread 🙂 “
That, or an over the top /out of bounds comment about nail polish ;/
bptParticipant” And? “
And since they have no respect for women in general, they act out like this. If they could get away with it, they would talk / treat their own womenfolk the same way, but that would be biting the hand that feeds / cooks / shops for them, so they keep their tail between their legs like the cowards they are.
And shout at women in the street.
Trust me. Give them a week’s worth of meaningful work, and they will see the rest of the Israeli society in a different light.
“Unfair to the instructors”
Not to worry. Give Rafi and Noam (or perhaps Tamar and Dafna?) a week, and they will have these wayward children dancing to a new tune.
bptParticipantHow’s this:
Take the protesters and have them do a week’s worth of Army duty. Then, they will know whom to respect, and who the enemy is.
Shameful, but we created this warped system of allowing adults to be unaccountable for anything other than <edited>.
My take? They don’t respect their wifes / daughters / mothers either.
Like I said: shameful
bptParticipant” what’..so funny about the initials MTV?? “
I got the joke! (but I’m over 30, so that helps.)
HIE = MTV was the YouTube of the 80s.
bptParticipantIf you qualify, (without cheating / shifting $$, assets to someone esle’s name, country) then take the money. Its yours, as you paid in to the tax base in your pre-qualified days.
Think of it as early Social Security. Its not a gift, its YOUR MONEY!

bptParticipantStill here, but really trying my hardest to keep checking / posting to a minimum. Like any CR addict will tell you, there was a time that I was checking in to see what’s doing 6-7-8 times a day. And had a comment for just about every thread.
CR was (and still is) loads of fun, but had to draw the line before it got out of hand.
So now, I try to keep it to once in a while, mainly to see if any of the members got engaged, or achieved some other personal accomplishment.
Yentingyenta – funny line!
December 13, 2011 11:39 pm at 11:39 pm in reply to: As much as I hate to admit I was wrong.. #834979bptParticipantWho I really hurt for, is the BT community, who may have looked at him as an example of someone who could turn outwardly frum, yet still function in the secular world.
Now, that duality is under question. Not to worry though. There are still many thriving examples of this dual role. Just not as famous (or in this case, infamous) as Mr. Miller.
December 13, 2011 10:43 pm at 10:43 pm in reply to: As much as I hate to admit I was wrong.. #834978bptParticipantThe big question is, did he shave his payos as well. If its “only” the beard, its not as bad. It just means he is looking to find a new identity. Not sure where this leaves his wife and kids, but thats a different issue.
If he took off his payos as well (and the photo seemed to indicate that he did) that means he no longer wants to be identified with us.
Either way, he’s not someone I can now point to and say, he’s a shining example of yiddishkeit in the workplace. From the way he did it / the statement he made, he just took a huge step away from us.
bptParticipant“shouldnt be on anyones radar screen.”
yeah, thats while she was sitting at the Shabbos table. But when she puts on her turban, housecoat and # 70s.. watch out!
bptParticipantNot my place to comment on Zumba per se, as it is geared for women. But I can see the draw it has. Be it for excercise or self-expression / release, it works wonders. True, any sort of aerobic excercise will give you the same results, but the key is motivation, and to stay focused on an excercise regiment takes real commitment and motivation.
Zumba’s motivation speaks to an emotion that gets motivated with little effort, hence the huge following.
Madison Ave knows it, now 13th Ave knows it too. And what better way to disguise the emotion by calling it “excercise”. Who could find fault with that?
Funniest of all? I have chassidishe neighbors who are avid Zumba dancers, who go to classes in their turban, housecoats, and # 70s. If they only knew to whose “tune” they were dancing to.
The Yezer Horo outdid himself this time. Hard to believe how many ways he can package the same product, and keep finding customers.
bptParticipant” the difference between Prust and Prizut ”
Prust would be used to describe an action
Prizut would be used to describe a behavior, or the way a person conducts themselves.
In a sentence, either of the two could be used. Lets put it this way, either word refers to things that are not, shall we say, virtuous.
Do you have a language other that English? If so, I could find a word that you might convey the idea a bit better
bptParticipant” welcome back to the room bpt “
Thanks, Goq. I’m still struggling with the addiction (and am making enormous progress) but still check in from time to time.
But some posts (like the nose piercing one) are just too outrageous to ignore, so I had to jump in.
How goes things with your diet?
bptParticipantwhat Prust means?
The word “Promiscuous” is essentially it. Might be a bit harsh, but the goal of the person is one and the same.
bptParticipantI’ll add one more thought, to put the concept of piercing in perspective:
A few years back, R’Amnon Yitzchok had a crown for a sefer torah fashioned from asst piercing jewelery that chozrim b’teshuva handed over when they were ready to begin road back to observant Yiddishkeit.
He asked for these to be handed over, as he saw this as the first step in putting a distance between the street culture and ours. By doing so, the person made a clear and unequivocal statement of who’s team he was now on.
So I ask you, if you see a bas yisroel with a piercing thru anything other than her earlobe, what do you think she is trying to tell you?
bptParticipantMuttar or not, if your wife / daughter comes home with anything other than her earlobe pierced, you have mucho reason for concern.
That this is even a topic of discussion in the CR is troubling.
bptParticipant” I still hold its BPT “
I was in the process of trying to break my CR addiction (as so far, was doing quite well!) but since you asked, the answer is no.
I’m not appearing as a new screen name nor a Mod.
Besides, check the “THIS” link, and you’ll see, none of my Threads Started” are there.
Mind you, I’m not mad at the CR or its management, but to tell the truth, my CR habit was getting out of control so I decided to give it a break.
I still check in from time to time. Not so much to see if I’m missed, (was I?) but mainly to see if there is something I cannot let go by unchallenged or on the positive side, if there are any engagements.
bptParticipant” Why are they making us into boys? “
For the same reason they want you to work full time. Boys were turned into girls, so someone has to lead the family.
And from what I see, you “guys” are doing a fine job!
bptParticipant“some really far away place where they haven’t discovered the internet yet. 🙂 “
It won’t come to that. She’ll be so enthralled with her new roommate, she won’t have the time or inclination to sit and vegetate, blogging her time away.

November 17, 2011 7:39 pm at 7:39 pm in reply to: Teens embaressed from parents – how common? #826984bptParticipantPretty common, but it passes with time (figure, when they hit 26-28).
And its usually over dumb things. My current offense? I buttom all the buttons on my jacket (as opposed to leaving the bottom one (or two) open.
And the fact that I say what I mean, instead of spouting the party lines.
November 17, 2011 4:12 pm at 4:12 pm in reply to: Is Lakewood Looking At A School Shortage For Next Year? #892436bptParticipant” with 20 kids fighting they are fighting to get into already BOOKED schools”
I hear you. But there HAS to be a spot for each child. Pehaps not in one single school, or maybe even among 4 schools. But there is no way each school is fully booked to capacity.
I keep coming back to the shidduch analogy. Its not that the boy cannot make up his mind, its that he’s afraid that if he commits, he might be passing up something better.
Schools are the same way. If they say yes now, they might be boxing themselves out of scooping up a “better” kid (parents with better yichus, more $$, less of a nudnik, ect) next month.
So the trick (and yes, trick, because is really is a game) is to present yourself (and your child) as THE CHOICE. Even if you don’t have all the bells and whistles.
I read this next line in the context of disater management / emergency preparedness, but it holds true in many life situations: Success is 10% methodolgy, 90% psychology.
Or in our lingo, tracht gut, vet zien gut (think positive, and things will work out).

What’s next Adore, you’ll start picking fights with other members, just to stir up some action?
Gosh, today’s kids. Give them a foot in the door, and they take over the place.
(Good for you, Adore!. Hope all is well in married land)
bptParticipantThe 3.5″ “floppy”
I still have a few in my desk. Don’t have a drive to open them, but that’s another story.
And I bought an Epson (with a 5″ drive!) for $1700. And at the time, was told that was too much firepower.
Woo, have times changed.
bptParticipant” BUY ONE GET ONE FREE!! ”
Hey, that might be something. That way, I could have one to work, and another to tend to the house.
Yeah, very sad. Well intentioned, but for our young women to be spoken of like this, its deplorable.

I’m all for kollel, and what Lakewood (both new and old) is all about. As a parent of grown children, I’m as deep into the scene as the next torah parent.
Its Fakewood I love to poke fun at.
November 16, 2011 4:32 pm at 4:32 pm in reply to: Is Lakewood Looking At A School Shortage For Next Year? #892428bptParticipant” you have to take another bus or plane sometimes due to the shortage of seats”
Good example, Getzel. And its my point exactly. True, it would be very convienent if you could get on the flight that all your friends are going on. And if its that important, what you need to do is book early, and not get disracted with other flights / carriers, than might have a small perk or discount. Pick the flight you want and book it without delay.
Of course, there will be times that you cannot get the flight you want. So rather than make yourself nuts over a maybe or going on standby, get a seat on another carrier, because in the end, its not the airline you care about, its the destination.
(Same applies for shiduchim).
On an unrelated subject, there is a terrific essay by someone about “my trip to holland” I heard it from Mrs. Juby Shapiro, so it might be online. It really drives home the concept of making the facts you have work. Because in the end, you cannot change facts, but you can make them work to your advantage.
As far as there being only x ammount of room and y ammount of kids, that is true; you cannot fit 30 kids in a room made for 25.
SO BE FROM THE 25!
We often hear that “there is 8-9% unemployment”. But that means 91% of people are working! Why not be from the 91%?
November 16, 2011 4:17 pm at 4:17 pm in reply to: WHAT'S THE PERCENTAGE OF TRUTH THAT PASSES THROUGH THIS PLACE.. #830696bptParticipant100% of what gets posted here is true. Depending on what you call truth.
November 16, 2011 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm in reply to: HELP!!! How do I make a shidduch resume?!?!?! #915174bptParticipantPoppa has it down, more or less, but what he failed to mention (which IMHO) is the deal maker / breaker:
* What is on your iPod ?
* What does your potato kugel taste like?
* Can you rollerblade? (if not, are you willing to learn how)
Once this is known about you, the other details (fam, friends, schools, shuls) are just to keep his parents busy.
What he needs to know about you can be determined by the 3 questions listed here
November 15, 2011 10:34 pm at 10:34 pm in reply to: Is Lakewood Looking At A School Shortage For Next Year? #892422bptParticipant” and you WILL find the right match.”
Sorry, let me clarify this line. True, you may have your heart set on one school. And for no fault of your own, that school may not be willing to take you.
But there is always a plan B. It may not have the exact profile you had in mind, but there is always another school that is within 90% of what you had hoped for.
And the last 10% is for you to strive for. If no other reason, than to rub the loss into the face of the school that turned you down.
I have had the pleasure of doing this a few times, and let me tell you, it feels 10 x as good as the hurt I felt when I was rejected.
Success is the best revenge. And its not even counted as nekomah!
November 15, 2011 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm in reply to: Is Lakewood Looking At A School Shortage For Next Year? #892421bptParticipant” your words are nonsense and unhelpful “
Which ones? The “kollel” slam or the “school crisis” crack?
Either way, I’m game for a fight, because I’ve seen both these stories from the other side of the fence, so I know how the game is played.
There is a school for every child. Just like there is a shidduch for every person. All you need to do is be honest with yourself and you WILL find the right match.
” at this point there are more non kollel people in Lakewood ”
This might be true, but CS is a newlywed, so she is in all probabilty still in the kollel circut. Hence, the sarcasm.
bptParticipantI knew I should not have waited until lunch to respond to this. Now all the good advice has already been posted, and there’s nothing left for me to add.
Ok, IC. You’re on the way to a new you. Enjoy the ride!
