The simple reason is, Torah will help you acheive the goals you set for yourself (assuming the goal you set is being an Oved Hashem).
Without a map, how can you check your progress? Without a blueprint, how can you build a stable structure?
And like any goal worth achiving, you need to have training from people who have experience (our gedolim, manhigim,).
A very qood question, indeed, Yita!
September 7, 2010 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm in reply to: Asking Shaalos – When Should a Rov Be Available #695674bptParticipantSorry, I should have been more clear. When I say I’d call my rov at 3:00am, I meant MY rov, the one I daven by, the one who comes to my simchas, ect.
To call a “community rov” like Rabbi Goldwasser? Unless directed to do so by my primary rov, that call should wait till a reasonable time. And if you don’t have a primary rov, the middle of the night/ crisis time is not the time to start a relationship
bptParticipantAnd for the record, not only to I not have /had girls in BYBP, my mrs did’nt go there either. So the BYBP problem is really not my concern (unless you consider the possibility that my DILs may come from there).
And no, this is NOT a community moisad. Its a “for profit” venture. Most years were wildly profitable, now they hit a rough spot. They’ll get over it.
That said, the teacher who is owed $ may not be able to wait it out as smoothly, so I (and several other CR members) were prepared to help out the rank-and-file. But to send $ to the office? Forget it. Thats what the parent body is there for
September 7, 2010 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm in reply to: Asking Shaalos – When Should a Rov Be Available #695671bptParticipantDepends on the question. Medical issues that are time sensitive (childbirth time, do / don’t do a procedure, ect) I’d call at 3am if I had to.
All other issues (husband / wife, milchig spoon in a fleshig pot, ect) that can wait till a reasonable time of day.
bptParticipantIf I remember correctly, the idea (and the only one I would be interested in) was to send the $ to YNW and have them relay it to a teacher that is owed $.
If BYBP never missed a payroll, what’s the crisis?

You mean to tell me, the female israeli is strong enought to be drafted and do army work (as good, pehaps better than some men), but cannot do lifeguard work?
Yeah, right.
September 3, 2010 2:19 pm at 2:19 pm in reply to: Shomrim Member Shot – What Are Your Thoughts? #694586bptParticipantIts one thing to corral a guy when all he’s got is a stick or a pipe (bats can kill, so I won’t include that).
But a gun? No, that’s beyond what Shomrim should try to contain. Unless, there is imminent danger to someone else, I’d say, let the guy escape.
bptParticipantFinger paint an oaktag cutout of an apple, and a “placemat” for the honey dish. I was told the tactile sensation of fingerpainting is very good for kids in EI (or OT/PT, if that’s applicable to anyone else).
It will also make the Yom Tov table a whole lot sweeter!
bptParticipant“People who display contempt for and make entire groups of people into caricatures”.
That could easily be me, and if I’m the one you meant, I’m sorry. If its not me you had in mind, I’m still guilty of this, so I ask mechila. Like you said, we sometimes express our opinion to give voice to those we feel are being taken (or taking) advantage of. Still, its no reason to take it to the gutter.
Mechila!

bptParticipantI read the womans volume back in the early days (I wanted to know what the other side was thinking 🙂
But like our OB said about reading Dr. Mom, while waiting for child # 1 to arrive:
“read it, then put the book away.. becuase the baby hasn’t read the book”
All books like this are great guides, but nothing prepares you for marriage better than marriage. And 20+ years later, and am still learning things about dos and don’ts in a relationship.
bptParticipantThis was done last week (the thread was called Mochel Loch). But it is worth repeating.
The heat in the CR gets turned on a bit to high sometimes, so I’m asking mechilah for anyone who I offended, anyone who acted on something I posted and it did not work out to their satisfaction, and more importantly, anyone who would have liked to post a comment but hesitated to do so, becuase of my (sometimes) smart-alecky way of saying things. (Mod 80 gets a special mechila request, even though its not deemed necessary by his reckoning.. and thanks for the new member id tag. I hope I can live up to it!)
bptParticipantThe idea was to have it go directly to a teacher / rebbi who is owed $. If it goes to the school, it gets swallowed without as much as a hiccup
bptParticipantBy the 3rd time I was hooked!
Funny choice of words, seeing as we’re talking about fish, which is indeed hooked!
bptParticipantThat’s easy. Schwartz Appetizing on 16th ave. (When you say sushi, you MUST be referring to herring and lox)
bptParticipantSad to see them on the ropes, Blinky. I have more sympathy for a specialty school than I do for the powerhouses.
Things are a little nuts now before Yom Tov, so the “diplaced students” may not land a spot right now, but once the school year gets back to a regular 6 day scedule, I’m sure they’ll all find an appropriate home.
As far as the $ pledge, as soon as YNW posts where to send it, I’ll gladly do so
bptParticipantSchnitzi on Coney and Ave I. Food is always fresh, and the scene is always hopping. Sweet potato chips are a real must.
bptParticipantBlinky – Is the school you refer to one of the mainstays of the community, with 200-300 kids? Or is it a “specialty school” with 30 kids that caters to a select group? Not to say its not a problem if its “only” 30 kids, but I’d still like to know the scope of the school that folded (or has a delayed opening)
bptParticipantMe and Mrs BP were still in the mountains this past shabbos, and the boys were in the city (yeshiva scedule / our packup drive back scedule did not make it practial for them to come up this weekend).
So they had an “in Shabbos”. SOme of the food was pre-made, some was bought, some they made themselves.
When we got back to the city late Sunday afternoon, the kitchen was spotless and the dishes /pots washed and put away. Leftovers were stored in containers.
Stunned (and pleasanty surprised) to say the least!
bptParticipantNot so remarkable. They DO have the money to stay afloat. Or they defer paying selected bills / salaries until they are in a more flush position.
When they talk “crisis” what they really mean is cash flow. When its plentiful, there is no problem. When there is the sign of a slowdown they yell and scream.
When the general public hears of a poor kallak or orphan, we open our hearts and wallets. When we hear of a school “whose very pillars are wobbling”, “we cannot open our doors this Sept”, we ect, ect”, all of a sudden the public takes a more critical look.
Are they struggling? Sure, if last year you got handed a check for $50,000 and this year its only $10,000 yes, you have a problem. But who told them to base a budget on the $50,000? That was a gift, not earnings (or in their terminology, tuition).
I was raised to only spend 80% of my earnings (10% for tzedakah, 10% gets banked). Mosdos spend 120% of what they net. So who’s fault is that?
bptParticipantOK, so we’ll leave it at that. BYOB is doing what they can to cut overhead (payroll is less for 2010 than it was in ’09) , find new sources of revenue (renting out rooms to Bobov) and is ingeneral minding their Ps and Qs
Thanks WDIEB, I was afraid BYOB was in a crisis. Glad to see all is under control. No doubt, this years article by Rabbi Shapiro will substantiate your take on the state of the union. (Till then, I’ll run with the numbers he provided last summer. As of right now, those are FACTS and what you say are claims)
bptParticipantthe great stress that moderators are constantly confronted with
Take my advice, Mod. Spend some time in the CR as a member. Nothing soothes the nerves like a good jolt of coffee (that is, until you see the dreaded EDITED. then the stress levels go off the charts!)
September 2, 2010 2:08 pm at 2:08 pm in reply to: Funny Shidduch Questions Asked About a Boy/Girl/Family #914036bptParticipantDoes that make me schizoid?
Not at all, Oomis –
To me it means that the jar was brought when you loaned your lalique to a neighbor, and the scooped out cucumber was done for the Shabbos Sheva Brachos you hosted. (See? Thats called being dan lchaf zechus!
bptParticipantAnd as far as my $100.. not to worry. Its in my budget, otherwise I would’nt have pledged it. Unlike Mosdos, I can only spend what I really have.
bptParticipantAnd the new building? If they can’t fill it and pay for it, they can sell it to Bobov or Satmar tomorow. But that will never happen.
Mosdos don’t work under the same principles as the common folk do. When we run into money trouble, we cut corners. If they have a budget crunch, they squeeze the public (or Govt programs, which in essence is the public too.)
bptParticipantI had no problem posting it last year, nor repeating it this year. The data was provided by Rabbi Shapiro last year.
Either way, no one is sympathetic to an organization that spends without oversight. Not to worry though; they will pull thru. The junior teachers will get squeezed, but the senior ones will get their pay.

bptParticipantI did some computer work for my son’s school a few years ago. When I offered again, I was told,”we have a paid staff for that. What we need from you is tuition.”
Of course, fundraising was something they would gladly help me with.. as long as I had my own list to call on
bptParticipantI was right. This WAS discussed last year. There was a thread that clocked almost 400 posts.
Here was one of mine. It dealt with the numbers that BYs own Rabbi Shapiro provided to Hamodia. As you can see, there is plenty of income; just plenty more overhead / expenses.
Tell me why a school needs staff / student ratio of 1:5
And 5townsmommy – living in the 5 towns, you cannot even imagine what we Brooklyn people go thru. Not all of us live on Beford and I. Tuition in your neighborhood is high? Rightfuly so.
(From last year’s thread)
this was the math I came up with over the weekend:
This is based on comments from R’ Shapiro’s interview in Hamodia’s weekend edition: Staff is about 400 people, figure about $3,000,000
Tution roll of aproximatly $8,000,000 (2000 students @ $4000)
That means there is still another 5 mil to work with. All that goes for chalk and copy paper? PLus, there was no mention about govt $ (which must surely be in the very high 6 digits). Sad fact is, no one is minding the store, becuase for SOOOO many years, there was more money coming in (a quick trip to XYZ gevir could yeild $50 grand, just for asking) so it was never a problem. Now, its a problem?
Sounds like someone is due for an audit. I’ll bet any business man or woman with 10 years experience could revamp BYOB and make it profitable. But that would require full disclosure on BY’s part… something mosdos will NEVER agree to.
And that is why the public is so sceptical and so complacent. Do they want help, or do they just want more money? We’d love to help. Money? Hmm. Not so fast
September 1, 2010 8:54 pm at 8:54 pm in reply to: Funny Shidduch Questions Asked About a Boy/Girl/Family #914028bptParticipantThis may have already been posted, but its so funny, I think its worth a possible re-post
This week’s Hamodia had a letter from a mother whose daughter is in shidduchim. The question pertained to the chrain on Shabbos:
is it brought to the table in:
a) the jar, right from the fridge
b) in a dish (Lalique, natch)
c) in a scooped out cucumber (no, I kid you not. This was the question)
My response to this would be “since when is chrain served with tuna fish (or sardines, depending on my mood, when asked the question)
And another funny answer to an old question just occured to me yesterday. When asked, which animal? I’d say without a moments hesitation:
a vilda chaya! (translation = wild animal)
It looses something when said in english, but take my word for it, vilda chayas often grow up to be the best spouses. To bad the question asker will never have the pleasure of meetin someone as real as that breed.
bptParticipantI’m in for $100, if it goes straight to a teacher.
Mod 80, if you (or YWN) would like to spearhead this, I’ll mail the check this week.
bptParticipantProf1 – (or anyone else that might know)
Any idea when R’ Rabinowitz made that statement? My guess would be at a time that most fathers worked, so meeting expenses could largly be met by having a full(er) enrollment.
Fast forward to present times, where many fathers don’t work, (yes, mothers work, but much of the income goes to daycare / cleaning help, takeout food, when she is just too frazzled to cook…and who can blame her?)
So today, the answer is not, just get more students. The answer is, get more PAYING students, and while we’re at it, lets also get students that will eventually be PAYING allumni.
You can only ride for free for so long
bptParticipantSimple. Move on to the next room (out of town, not of your “kreis”, working instead of learning, ect) where a different round of chairs are waiting to be occupied.
You’d be pleasntly surprised how big a selection there is,if you’re flexible. But sadly, AZ you are right; if every single insists on “the best bocher in BMG” there is a crisis indeed
bptParticipantSince you mentioned it, bikeriding is not as practial (skirt are a real challenge) so that’s why its not as common among teens / adults. But rollerblading is no different than ice skating, and should be encouraged
bptParticipantDisagree. If the school cannot cover its expenses, better the child be sent to a school that can handle him / her before the ball drops. Nothing is as disruptive as switching schools mid-year
bptParticipantI feel like I’m stuck in a time warp, as this issue was discussed last year as well.
BYBP (like most girls schools) is overstaffed. Let them try the boys school model (1 teacher for limude kodiesh, 2-3 for secular studies). And the buses for girls over 12 and those within 6 blocks of the school should be ended.
We all understand budgeting; that’s how you make ends meet on a limited budget. Till now, mosdos enjoyed a watershed of $$$. Those days are gone, and now its time to do some real math.
bptParticipantWe need also not be super-focused on the “older single guys” either. There are dozens of non “a++ super cool best bocher” bochurim, that are just fine young men, that are quite suitable for their girl counterparts among us.
The problem is, shadchanim (and to some extent parents) think their chils (either gender) is a++ super cool best boy/girl, wether its the case or not. And heaven forbid, someone to suggest anything less than 5-10 years support (or agree to w-o-r-k shortly after marriage) and that shidduch goes down the drain.
Do we have a shidduch crisis? Yes, sort of. Can we fix it? You bet we can!
bptParticipantPerhaps. But good posture / proper balance is a vital part of childbearing, so all is forgiven (but that’s still not my reason for being a rollerblade advocate)
bptParticipant“rollerblades, and the new type of skate board”
Its called a rip stick. And could you tell me what is wrong with rollerblades?
As it happens, rollerblading is one of 3 questions I plan on asking the shadchan (1st is the paper / plastic situation and #2 is the animal.)
OK, I’m kidding about question 1 and 2.. but rollerblading is a real question. Not to say a fine suggestion that has never ‘bladed is out of the running.. as long as she’s willing to learn how 🙂
bptParticipantPushata yid (who is obviously nisht azoi pushit)
Great ananlogy!
And AZ –
The same people who put together the girls data, should be able to get the same info on the boys
bptParticipantSurely he could get a job as a CR mod!
Seroiusly, my guess would be either an HR managers position or teacher (I think the public school system will take you as a Fellow with a degree of any type). Another option would be the FBI. No, I’m not kidding. My friend told me they were huge recruiters when he was in Fordham / YU
bptParticipantThis story was printed in one of the Maggid books (or I heard it on a R’ Krohn tape) and addresses the importance of tznius among goyim:
(this is the abridged version)
Germany 1939 – Teen girl is left to close up house and then meet up with family out of town at grandparents house in a few days (where the rest of the family is, till things “cool down”).
Heat turns up. Teen thinks, now is time to go, but how to avoid being spotted? Decides to “loosen hair, open top button, ect” so she looks less jewish.
Stops short and thinks about what momma said, “affileh far de fir vent darf men zech shaimen” (even for the 4 walls, you have to act with modesty).
Pulls hair together, closes button and heads for Grandmas place. Trip is uneventful, but quite scary. Upon arrival, she tells momma about the choice she made. Smart move says momma, reaching for and pulling on the chain around teen’s neck. Had you gone out with an open button, your mogen dovid (or some other very jewish pendant, not sure which) would have given you away.
Bottom line: Tzinus is always the best route (and always listen to momma!)
bptParticipantWhat I find funny, is this “shell under a t-shirt” look has been worn in the modern orthodox (think: Stern College girls) for years, and now I see this on my wife’s friends who are TEACHERS in Bklyn Bais Yaakovs. And, its everywhere you look in BP.. even on the girls who wear # 70s / women with covered shaitels.
Good morning, frumsters of America! You’ve just been upgraded to MO!
bptParticipantIt will also show the parent body that rebbeim are not shmattes. I have many friends who are top notch rebbeim, ones who could just as easily be CPAs or network administrators. They choose to be in chinuch becuase they want to.. not because they have to. They have the training, have the skills, and as a result, have jobs in $ solvent mosdos.
Not to say the striking school is not cash rich and the rebbeim are not on top of the game, but if the conditions warrant it (and it sounds like it does) they should leave the school high and dry.
bptParticipant“the discussion is about rebbeim who are not getting paid”
What I meant to say is, the rebbeim SHOULD walk and let the hanhallah see how tough it is to replace quality staff. And while it might be (is?) wise to add a new fresh face to the staff mix every now and then, without a solid backbone of proven, seasoned rebbeim, no yeshiva can make it (unless you’re talking about an upstart outfit with 2nd grade and under only).
Of course, this will mean that only the good staffers will either be taken back (or hired elsewhere) but that’s how it works in the corporate world, and sad to say, yeshiva has become a business, so you need to be ready to play hardball.
bptParticipantLet them walk. It will do the schools some good to see that not every bargain is a value. Sure, the schools can fill every desk in a blink. But putting an avrech in front of a class of 20 smart-alecky 11 year olds is a class uproar waiting to happen. Many rebbeim ARE worth what they get paid.
But when all is said and done, this is a sad day for torah.. regardless what the outcome
bptParticipantWrong paste, Helpful (but would love to hear your best CC cookie receipe, all the same 🙂
August 30, 2010 4:09 pm at 4:09 pm in reply to: Shuls/Yeshivos in Boro Park that say Selichos Sunday morning #694537bptParticipantThere are loads of places /times for Day 2 an onward, but the 1st one (to my knowlegde) is either 1:00am or 5:00am.
If I had to guess, I would check Shomer Shabbos, as they have the widest variety of times, but I’d be really surprised if they do.
I think Stolen (16th / 46th) says it at 10:00pm, so if that’s a better option, you might try asking there
August 30, 2010 4:04 pm at 4:04 pm in reply to: Which Singers Are Your Top 3 Favorites, (list by order) #1109061bptParticipantShloima Carelbach (No, I did not mean to write ShLOMO)
Lipa
Matisyahu.
All 3 were /are innovators and shook up the music world as we knew it. Plus, they reach an audience that others either miss or overlook
bptParticipantThe only worthwhile tip I can add to this thread is one time,I used a box of chocholate (instead of chips) and “shaved” them with a vegetable peeler into the cookie dough. They curled up like pencil shavings and were evenly distributed thru the whole cookie.
We had gotten the box as a gift, and after 3-4 pieces, no one wanted to eat anymore, so this was a good way to use them up.
Let me tell you, a VERY expensive batch of cookies, but oh, so good!
