takahmamash, I think I remember finding Bosco syrup in Israel at some point, but it was a bit too grainy for my liking, Could be mistaken, though. It’s been a while. 😀

* There are Jewish people living in the part of the world Biblically known as Eretz Yisroel.
* Thanks to the Zionists, there is a Jewish state where Jews can theoretically move to if the rest of the world does, indeed, become a dangerous place for us.
* Kosher chewing gum from big-name brands, like Orbit and Bazooka.I was not a supporter of Billary Clinton during the 2016 election. Benefits of her running and getting as far as she did include:
* Proof that women can run for president and get as far as being selected as a mainstream party’s candidate.
* Inspiration for more qualified and honest women to run for president in the future.
* …?Bookworm120ParticipantI don’t need a calendar, a date converter, or anything. I just send a letter to my LOR’s grave any time I have a question. Or, sometimes, I think of a question and open a book of my LOR’s correspondence to a random page to get my answer. It works every time, even if I’m not on the level to understand what some lady’s old shaitel has to do with the time I should recite Havdalah.
😛
Bookworm120ParticipantHonestly, I think popular culture tells kids not to like vegetables. If I hadn’t read storybooks about kids who struggled to eat their vegetables, I probably would’ve kept on eating them. The fictional kids made a good case that vetables are squishy and yucky and I was an impressionable young one.
Bookworm120ParticipantI’m late to the Purim party but I much prefer open-top hamentaschen. Unless I know for a fact that all closed-top hamentaschen have poppy seeds inside. That way, I know what flavor I’m getting.

The Writers’ Cafe Magazine – I’m not sure if they’re still current, but they seem to be a literary publication for frum writers. Their criteria looks pretty flexible, and the sample stories are neat!
Yehudis Magazine – I think they’re a more recent frum publication for Jewish teen girls and women, specifically. It looks like they only accept submissions through their website/by email, though…. (Not sure if that’s still an issue for you.)
Hope those help – keep writing! 🙂

Bookworm120ParticipantHey, Shopping! Thanks for bringing this subject up.
While I believe that women and men have different roles in Judaism, I also believe that women and men should have equal social and employment opportunities in the secular world. (Whether they should take full advantage of these opportunities is another story entirely. Maybe a girl doesn’t want to work in a STEM field, and really would rather be a stay-at-home mom – but I digress….) In that sense, I think it’s possible to support [at least some] feminist values and live a frum Jewish lifestyle without conflict.
Not everyone defines “frum feminism” this way; the majority of people I see calling themselves “frum feminists” on the Web tend to support things that seem to conflict with Orthodox Jewish values. Many appear to be feminists advocating for pro-feminist changes within Judaism, not feminists who happen to be frum Jews. I have my reasons for not openly associated with others who call themselves “frum feminists” … and the feminist movement as a whole.

December 10, 2015 12:37 pm at 12:37 pm in reply to: ????? ???? ??? ??? ?????? (message from true Torah Jews) #1116015Bookworm120Participantkj chusid, Thanks so much for sharing your insights on the Chanuka miracles. I think I’ve been subject to a little of this Zionist pro-war agenda this year (e.g. the miracle of the oil being an “insignificant midrash” for children and the war aspects being the one true miracle; that “real Jews” fight wars while “wimps” just sit in front of their menorahs eating latkes….) And I thought I was doing so well on the “The world’s gonna go boom by President Billary, move to Israel NOW!!!” front. I’ll admit here (where I’m fairly anonymous) that they got me this time! 😛
Anyway, I think your post was G-d’s ways of gently putting me back in my place. Thank you, kj chusid.

I didn’t know Popa was the OP until I opened this thread, so I had this rant prepared:
In all seriousness, not all folks are cut out for the army. And not all folks are cut out for attending a university campus either. One shouldn’t be forced to take part, nor should one be forced to not take part. People need to be educated about their options (and in the case of Charedim and the [Israeli] army, they should have real options), and make informed decisions about what path they wish to take.
That said, Popa, ha! You made me look!

Bookworm120ParticipantCranberries are definitely in season, so if you’re serious (and even if you’re not – any cholent is good cholent), I’ll give that a try!
Bookworm120ParticipantWhat type of juice, @Joseph? I’ve been experimenting with cholent-esque concoctions, but I’m not confident enough with the results that I can call them anything more than plain old “stew.”
Bookworm120Participant@mr.mustard – Thank you!!! This shiur seems a little more recent than what I recall hearing, but it sounds like a step in the right direction!
@Comlink-X and the Mod who commented on their post – I think the video was probably on TA at one point. The YouTube video I found had the TA watermark. Maybe TA took the video down because of its controversial elements.
Bookworm120ParticipantBeef shnitzel.
What I find so horrific is that this sort of atrocity happens all the time in Israel by the same nation of terrorists, and NOBODY in the secular world talks about that.
Bookworm120ParticipantI see why you’d be hesitant to give out that particular lecture just like that. From just skimming through the video, I can see how the poor man’s words were taken so out of context.
I think I’m looking for a different shiur where R’ Wallerstein does this all-out “rap” that was about how rap lyrics promote violence and “killing everybody.”
With regards to your quote of my post, I believe you left out the phrase “I believe” before I made that statment. 😉 As someone who doesn’t have much exposure to the genre, I am open about the fact that I have little expertise. I do know with certainty that the stuff that blasts out of cars driving down my street from time to time cannot be compared even to old rock music.
Bookworm120Participant*That’s where He can be found!”
Bookworm120ParticipantHow about…. “Hashem is here / Hashem is there / Hashem is truly everywhere! Up, down, right left, all around / Here, there, and everywhere / That’s where he can be found!”
November 12, 2015 5:21 pm at 5:21 pm in reply to: DO WE REALLY HAVE A GOOD EXCUSE TO LIVE IN CHUTZ LA'ARETZ? #1112886Bookworm120Participant@flatbusher – “When Moshiach comes, IYH we will all go.” Amein to that. That’s my plan. 🙂
Bookworm120ParticipantOn the subject of rap music, to which I have very little exposure, I believe the general consensus is that rap music tends to have a lot of vulgar language and the lyrics blatantly objectify women and speak poorly of human beings in general. And I can think of a million reasons why listening to a guy chanting slang and vulgarities to a repetitive beat is ugly in comparison to orchestral arrangements by classical composers and early rock music with a TUNE (not to mention, in the Beatles’ case, epic vocal harmonies) and by comparison tasteful lyrics.
Bookworm120Participant@Comlink-X – I wanted to share the shiur with someone who could really benefit from hearing it.
November 12, 2015 1:09 pm at 1:09 pm in reply to: DO WE REALLY HAVE A GOOD EXCUSE TO LIVE IN CHUTZ LA'ARETZ? #1112877Bookworm120ParticipantI am coming here knowing that the OP may attempt to refute whatever I say, and whether his arguments make sense, I realize it’s not worth arguing back. The OP seems very set in his ways.
“Eretz Yisrael has been overrun by uncouth vulgar barbarians with disgusting habits who will stop at nothing to uproot Torah, and about whom there is little we are able or even willing to do about it.
Not to mention the country is under constant attack by very annoying Yismaelim.” – akuperma
As someone who has lived in Israel in B”H a time of relative quiet, I have to agree with akuperma on this one.
I love the Holy Land, but I see no compelling reason to live there, especially now.
My dear friends who still live in the state of Israel assure me constantly that a) it’s actually really safe in Israel right now, despite all that silly the “propaganda” the media is propagating about terrorism in Israel right now, and b) we should all leave America because the very same things that are going on in Israel right now could happen here.
Well, they’re happening in Israel right now on a very grand scale, believe it or not. Here, not so much, if at all. I live here, so I know. Right now, at this very moment in time, I am a lot safer living “chutz la’aretz.” (It cracks me up how for some, the whole world revolves around Israel. Everywhere and everyone else is just a “chutznick.”)
How many murdered yeshiva bochurim, Jewish girls who fall trap to the sadistic young Ibrahims and Youssefs of the Muslim community, whole families being murdered in their sleep, and innocent pedestrians getting stabbed and maimed in the streets, will it take before people realize just how flipping unsafe (and STUPID) it is to live in Israel right now? And that’s just physical danger. Spiritual danger is a WHOLE other story!
You may say I’m living in a bubble, that I’m blocking out all rhyme and reason propagated by the good religious Zionists, encouraging me to save my soul before America goes boom. (Some, dual citizens of the US and Israel, speak of such an idea with such relish, it makes me sick.) I say that aliyah-pushers should take a good look at their own backyard and realize the first place that would go kablooey in a Muslim anti-Israeli/anti-Semitic attack is the so-called Jewish State. Don’t give me your anti-American fear-mongering headcanons. Israeli-American dual citizens especially, I (like most Americans) don’t like President Obama or his policies any more than you do, but you should be ASHAMED of yourselves with the evil you wish daily on your fellow Jewish American people.
I hope and pray that Hashem will continue to watch over every Jew in the world, from Israel, to America, to Madagascar, and the moon. And if I had a dollar for every time someone has told me G-d only watches over the Jews Israel, I could buy plane tickets to fly all my Israeli family and friends (and even my frenemies) to real safety!
November 9, 2015 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm in reply to: DATI LEUMI AND CHAREDI- why is there such friction? #1112018Bookworm120ParticipantIf we didn’t pigeonhole the Jewish people into little boxes and constantly negatively highlight how people are different, maybe we’d have peace between these two “factions”. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m just Jewish. That’s enough categorizing for me.
Bookworm120Participant@geordie613 – There are a few shiurim where he warns his audience like that. I also can’t remember which exactly. There’s also a shiur where Rabbi Wallerstein says, “I don’t know anything about the Internet.” But that’s a whole other matter that I’d rather not discuss here in my thread.
Again, folks, if anyone can remember which shiur R’ Wallerstein did the rap, it would be appreciated. 🙂
Bookworm120ParticipantHow about the one that goes….
“Oy na na na na nay oy na na na na na nay-ay-ay”?
Bookworm120ParticipantWill Benny be there?
You know, Benny Friedman. Who else would I be talking about on a forum for frum people? 😀
Bookworm120ParticipantI think that many people are used to things being very routine. Seeing something different takes people by surprise, and, caught off guard, they aren’t always sure how to handle it. Oftentimes, I see people reacting to difference with fear. Folks should learn to better roll with the punches and deal with it realistically.

October 30, 2015 1:55 am at 1:55 am in reply to: Do Chafetz Chaim Boys like Factory Bread, Bakery Bread, or Gefilte Fish? #1108357Bookworm120ParticipantIt is my belief that Chofetz Chaim girls value the mitzvah of shmiras halashon, guarding the palate, from evils, such as mouldy bread and expired gefilte fish. Likewise, surely Chofetz Chaim boys are particularly stringent in this mitzvah, and seek out girls who, as housewives, will be scrupulous in this mitzvah when serving them their dinner when they come home from a long day at kollel.
Bookworm120Participant@Joe katz – Thank you for sharing this message. I hope a day will come when our nation won’t need tragedies as a motivator to unite.
Bli neder, I will work on judging others more favorably.
