basically this discussion boils down to this.
are we willing to let kids get spiritually damaged from their cellphones? or are we willing to potentially emotionally damage kids by treating them like inmates… pick your poison…
there IS no answer to the question, but everyone is welcome to their own opinions. (not that i wont shout ALL CAPS at you for posting yours…lol)

bombmaniacParticipantindeed! wasnt he the one that got the times for the student passes extended to 10:30 or mishmar?
January 6, 2010 7:39 am at 7:39 am in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673522bombmaniacParticipantcertain collateral damage just isnt acceptable. if he has “probable cause” then im all for it…otherwise?…THEY ARENT PRISONERS!!!
as for “they have nothing to hide”…you have nothing to hide at the airport…would you still mind a complete strip search? i think so…
as for saving kids from going off the derech…i can gaurantee you no student is going off the derech from a cellphone alone. there must be an underlying issue that is causing his “off the derechness” and the phone is just a catalyst…so to subject the masses to such annoying and demeaning treatment for the benefit of a small group of kids who have other bigger problems…is just wrong! unless of course you took a vote…
bombmaniacParticipantim sorry you misunderstood me…i agree he has a beautiful voice! and i would buy his album 😀 however i think he should stick more to the original than try and make his own variation of it…in my opinion it ruins it a bit
bombmaniacParticipantsome guy on my block was leaning on his horn one night…i went over to his car…had him roll down his window…and told him to get a life
January 5, 2010 11:46 pm at 11:46 pm in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673519bombmaniacParticipantonce again i saw nowhere in the first post about there being mass rule floutage at the school…you all are making it sound like this school is a bunch of bums…
January 5, 2010 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673513bombmaniacParticipantyou are all assuming that they broke the rules…if you KNOW for an absolute fact that a certain student has a cellphone…FOR AN ABSOLUTE FACT…then and only then can you have them turn out their pockets. otherwise…there is no reason to treat students like prisoners returning from the yard!

bombmaniacParticipantthat is when he HAS to come…not necessarily when he will…and even that is faulty because like i said in a previous post…our count of the worlds age is off by 140 (+)? years…we arent meant to know the exact date. we are supposed to expect him every day equally.
January 5, 2010 4:34 pm at 4:34 pm in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673509bombmaniacParticipantand THAT is where the system miserably fails oomis. right at your post. there are a few reasons why a high school kid might obey rules.
they are afraid of being kicked out
they are afraid of detention
or…they love and respect their rebbeim and what their rebbi says they follow.
ideally yeshivos should run on the third one. it is better for everyone, the teachers have a better teaching experience…and the students have a better learning experience. however that is ideal…and will never happen in the purest sense, so there have to be rules and punishments set up. that being said…the most important time of a bochur’s life is high school. they make very important choices in high school that affect the rest of their lives…and that is a big responsibility and “achrayus” that no one can possibly bear on their own. they NEED the guidance of their rebbeim to help them make these decisions. in order for the rebbi to help a bochur make the proper decisions he needs to know certain private and intimate details about that bochur in order to help him make a decision that is right for HIM.
are you starting to see the problem? its rules like that that estrange a rebbi and talmid. if a bochur feels like an animal in a cage in high school…and sees authority figures there as dog trainers…they will never trust and love their rebbeim enough to let them in. rules are important without rules there would just be chaos…but everything in moderation. make too many ridiculous rules and it will just backfire.
bombmaniacParticipantwith mechitzas of course…LOL

January 4, 2010 7:22 pm at 7:22 pm in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673484bombmaniacParticipantas i said it is BECOMING a necessity. they will have to reach a compromise eventually.
anyway back on topic…i think that randomly making a kid empty his pocket is quite demeaning. its like they are back in nursery. you gotta trust the kids somewhat…if you SEE them breaking the rules…THEN you can punish them.
January 4, 2010 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673478bombmaniacParticipantoomis…phones have become an absolute necessity. schools will HAVE to compromise just like they did on internet. however there is no reason why the phone should be on in class.
bombmaniacParticipantas i understand it our count of the age of the world is possible off by up to 160 years…whether done intentionally by the chachomim of the time…or it was an honest mistake…we dont know the true year and therefore cannot possibly make accurate predictions…besides were supposed to anticipate him every day…if we know when he’s gonna come that kinda sorta takes away from that anticipation
bombmaniacParticipantfor once im agreeing with you anuran lol
January 4, 2010 8:10 am at 8:10 am in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673470bombmaniacParticipantthen you make a rule that if its heard in school it gets taken…vibrating isnt such a disturbance…you just push a button on the phone through yor pocket and it shuts off
bombmaniacParticipanthe has a good voice…but in my opinion he should stop trying to show his voice off so much and just sing the song

January 4, 2010 4:52 am at 4:52 am in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673464bombmaniacParticipantwell…personally i feel that a cellphone itself wont drive a kid over the edge…there must be other factors…and while they may be able to ban it now, within a few years schools will not be able to ban them…they are already becoming an absolute necessity
bombmaniacParticipantno problem anyone can post their computer problems up here and ill try to help them as best i can
bombmaniacParticipantok. to lower the resolution right click on an empty part of your desktop and click properties. then click on the settings tab on the top of the window that opens. on the bottom left is a little box with a slider in it…the box is marked “screen resolution” to lower the resolution of the screen slide the slider to the left…to raise it…slide it to the right. lowering the resolution will make everything bigger…but it may cause you to lose focus on the screen, and you will see less on the screen.
there is another option.
you can make the letters bigger in windows follow the same instructions above…except go to the “appearance” tab. on the bottom of that window is a drop down menu marked “font size” use that menu to adjust the font size.
to increase the font size in your internet browser press holt “ctrl” and tap the “=/+” key to make the fonts bigger. to make them smaler hold “ctrl” and tap the “-” key. i hope this helps.
also if youre using a CRT…one of those old screens…you should think about getting a screen shade which filters out the “radiation” from the screen (which for all you people out there…is only a problem with crt)

bombmaniacParticipanteye strain is becoming less of a problem. ever since the transition from CRT to LCD screens the strain on the eyes has been drastically lowered. if you find yourself feeling strained…lower the contrast and brightness on your screen, and increase the font size.
bombmaniacParticipantlol thats what we do best here 80…argue 😀 thats what makes the CR fun 😀
bombmaniacParticipantLOL!!! :D:D:D
bombmaniacParticipantlol im sorry OOTer…but me and this username go back too far :D:D:D
bombmaniacParticipantclearly you’ve never had a good chulent 🙂
bombmaniacParticipantlol that reminds me of a convo i had with some anti semite kid…he was going on about how jews ruled the world…(what can i say…we do :D)he kept asking me questions about the “great conspiracy” so i told him i was sworn to secrecy. he did a double take…a shocked look on his face…so i said “yeah…what do you think a Bar Mitzvah is?”
bombmaniacParticipantno it IS a done deal…the only question is about the details…there are differences in the house and senate versions that have to reconciled…but the bill itself has already been passed
bombmaniacParticipantlol once again…our posts were messed up:)
bombmaniacParticipantso true!
i was recently at a lecture by rabbi dovid orlofsky…he told a very interesting story.
a man got married and told his wife that one of the conditions was that she understands that he is a “masmid” and that he will spend his whole day learning, and that she would have to bear the burden of taking care of the kids. before long they had three kids in yeshiva. all was going well…until they got into the higher grades and they started acting up…becoming problems. the wife, overwhelmed asked her husband for help, in response he reminded her of the condition. she was insistent and told him to go ask his rebbi. he told his rebbi “i dint understand…she knew the conditions of the marriage, what changed? she knew what she was getting into” the rebbi responded…”true…but your children didnt agree to that condition and they need a father. if you cant be a father to these children then give them up for adoption! youve already been mekayem the mitzvah of peru urevu!”
im not sure what the end of the story is…but the message is clear. derech eretz kadmah latorah!
