im not bashing any rabbonim per se and ideally i could get a response from one…but i cant because they are inaccessible. notice i said i had a problem understanding their position not that thye are wrong, and by the way i am well aware of the fact that we in our communities are not and do not tolerate homosexuality, but heres the thing. i have met many people who see absolutely no problem with it at all as long as youre not jewish. personally i think that stance is wrong. if youre not going to support an anti gay candidate at least be anti gay yourself. but many people are not…because they dont really see it as wrong. the torah tells them not to be gay so they arent, but tehy dont understand that theres something wrong with it. THAT is an influence by secular and irreligious culture right there!

3 – I didn’t think I was bringing R’ Levin into the picture. The “good govt” I was referring to is the one that keeps pur budget in check, crime under control, and the trains running on time (ok, that I could compromise on).

    traditionally the conservative candidate anyway.

    Bomb guy you’re beautiful.

while on the subject of toeivah…i’m kidding, thank you.

CHAIMBERLIN702: absolutely. personally i think paladino is the better candidate (i am using this as an example, please dont go into specifics) because he speaks his mind and his positions are clear. for years i have been saying that the ideal candidate would be one who is self funded and has no fear or speaking his mind. paladino is not self funded but he does speak his mind. plainly.

again, i used him as an example, please do not launch into a discussion of paladino’s pros and cons. “hakesef ya’aneh es hakol” is not meant as a way of life, people. money and social services are not the ikkur. torah and yahadus is the ikkur.now some may argue that since torah is the ikkur we should look the other way on social issues in order to facilitate the learning of torah. however that is invalid. you flout the torah to learn the torah. that’s like the maskil who used to sit on the toilet smoking a cigarette on shabbos while learning gemarah. it is inherently contradictory, and on these issues there can be absolutely no compromise.

2 – of course I know the outside world influences me.

you make my case for me. case closed. you cannot avoid it. unless possibly if you live in skver…but if not you are influenced by the social policies and agendas of the secular and non jewish world. make no mistake. don’t let your personal negios get in the way of what is true.

one other point i wasnted to raise. you say the actions of goyim do not concern us. what of the sheva mitzvos b’nei noach?

the FDA is not in the business of promoting small enterprises. they are in the business of keeping consumers safe when it comes to food and drug purchases. please dont make this into a social-economic issue.

Because when you really get down to the nuts and bolts of it, toevah is not that much different than eating chometz on pesach? Yet we don’t go running and screaming when a candidiate does that.

you’re making my point about society as a whole influencing us. yes homosexuality is worse. to the best of my knowledge the torah does not refer to chometz on pesach as an abomination.

I tell myself and my family, we are us (frum, bnei torah) and they are not. So it matter not one wit what the candidate does on his personal time, or who he associates with (unless its fringe nuts that pose a threat to my safety, like neo-nazis, which is not the case here).

as sheltered as you think you and your children are you are deluding yourself and shortchanging them. you can tell yourself all you want that society as a whole does not affect you one iota, but it is simply not true as i indicated above.

Will this person run a good govt? Give him the job. Period. I don’t have to advertise who I voted for, and I certainly don’t need to hold press conferences. Let me hear what the positions are in the issues that matter to the city, and I’ll make a choice.

please leave rabbi levin out of this discussion. your definition of a good government apparently consists of social services and nothing else. this is precisely the issue i am raising.

@squeak thank you this has bothered me for a very very long time.

I’m not seeing the issue…maybe its because im an idiot, but lets take the other side of the FDA, the drug part. if lets say a revolutionary painkiller was released by pfizer which worked in 5 minutes for 10 hours, and was the strongest most effective OTC pain reliever on the market, it’s only downside being that after 10 doses, no matter the intervals, you WILL go into cardiac arrest, would anyone here object to the FDA banning that drug? i didn’t think so.

as for unpasteurized milk, i see no problem with the FDA’s position on the matter. it poses a public hazard especially for those who would buy it as a novelty item not knowing the risks inherent in the product. someone above touted a number, 49 people who become ill from unpasteurized milk per annum, and 0 fatalities. how may people who do not own the cow or know the person who owns the cow personally are drinking that kind of milk? please cite that statistic.

i have had unpasteurized milk, and it is quite tasty, however i knew the farmer personally, and the milk was delivered to me the day it was extracted (or so i was told). i was told when it was delivered that i am not to keep it for more than 48 hours. after 48 hours i MUST discard it as it is dangerous to keep raw milk past that point. now i ask you, how cost effective would that product be? suppose stores kept the milk for longer, you run serious risks if you buy it. many people do not know the risks.

as such i believe that the FDA must ban the product for the benefit of those who do not know the risks associated with raw milk and would buy it anyway because of it’s novelty or supposed health benefits.

they are NOT banning the consumption of raw milk, merely the selling of raw milk. your rights are not being trampled on, fear not.

what BT said. in response to your amalek argument, hypothetically speaking if it came down to that then yes, it would be a big issue. it would not be practical to shout it from the rooftops but not because it is politically incorrect. it would be wrong because that would pose a real danger in terms of pikuach nefesh to jews. people would start killing us for our statements and as a preemptive measure.

gay rights however threatens the lives of no one, at least not in the jewish community. we do have freedom of speech, we can say what we want. sucking up to a candidate who will pervert the morals of our state and by extension the country simply because we want some money, which incidentally could be had if people left kolel, is absolutely disgusting. it is flattering a rasha and assur.

what i said about kolel, i do not want to change the direction of this thread, but to be perfectly honest if you absolutely cannot support your family, then it is your achrayos to get a job if you can.

“His views are ridiculous. His tactics are childish.”

his views are the views of the torah. all those of you opposed to him keep trotting this out. please bring one example where he is directly against the torah. being vehemently anti gay is not against the torah.

“This loon has his own youtube channel! Is this a leader?”

and you’re on youtube enough to know this…what does that make you? having a youtube channel means absolutely nothing, and as far as i can tell there is nothing wrong with having a youtube channel. by the way, everyone with a google account has a youtube channel, and everyone has a google account.

“Rav Sternbuch is a great man, but I doubt he asked Levin to fly to Eretz Yisrael to protest. They have plenty of protesters, trust me. Perhaps Levin flew in and got involved in his favorite past time. He may have even spoken to Rav Sternbuch; does that make his positions in the least bit valid or endorsed by Daas Torah?

    Something!”

once again i am confused…WHAT. HAS. HE. DONE. THAT. IS. AGAINST. THE. TORAH?!? for heaven’s sake! GIVE US A CREDIBLE EXAMPLE!!! you sit there bashing someone because he makes you feel uncomfortable, but that is no reason to bash him. what has he done that would warrant gedolim speaking out against him?

“what else does this guy do for Khal Yisrael – not for fundamentalist christians, Khal Yisrael ! – other then shray in their name about Toeva!”

other than shray in their name about toeva…i am STILL not seeing a problem in shraying against gays…i really am not. i mean the torah is vehemently opposed to homosexuality…please explain the problem…

“Do you know that Levin says that terrorist attacks happen because of gays?!”

that is the only objectionable thing i have seen cited against him. i have not sen a source for that…but if he said that then he indeed did go too far. it is not his place and he cannot know that. some of his tactics may indeed need refining but his premise is spot on, and i still see no problems with what he is doing.

i am very confused here…his approach may be a bit unrefined, however that is the only claim one could possibly have against rabbi levin. you find the anti homosexual distasteful? ah well…the torah would disagree. we ARE homophobic (bigots is a relative term). very homophobic. we detest homosexuality. we look upon it as an abomination. we see it’s acceptance in world culture as an absolute travesty. now…where do you disagree with levin?

on the subject of homophobic, that is an incorrect term. we do not fear them. we detest them.

yes. please cease with the subtle insults. say them straight out.

on point, i always assumed that the actual halachos were transmitted at sinai but over the course of the years, as chachomim were killed and jews were dispersed, and there could no longer be a consensus, the laws were restored by the discourses of the tannaim and amoraim in the beis hamedrash based on what they had heard from their rebbeim. the reason for machlokes i always assumed was because there could be no overwhelming consensus seeing as the sources of halachic knowledge were few and far between at various parts of jewish history and therefore there were only a few mesorahs each of which had to be challenged an analyzed before they could be accepted as actual halacha.

as for moshe in the midbar i assumed that he had gotten the exact oral law as a set of specific halachos, not as debates he would have to sift through. that exact halacha was lost through the course of history and had to be restored by the tannaim and amoraim.

these are assumptions on my part, and i could be wrong, comments please?

i don’t see why anyone would give those radical nut-jobs the time of day. the entire country, and in fact the world knows that these inbred lowlifes are representative of no one but themselves, and that what they spew is of no consequence to anyone whatsoever. they have been condemned time and again for their outrageous, inflammatory, and completely unbased proclamations which are consistently nothing more than unabashed racism and bigotry.

first off any study conducted on goyim i will disregard. they have no concept of right and wrong, and most of them hit for the wrong reasons. hitting is to teach your kid a lesson he will never forget, but not the way they understand it 😀

as for my wife, no. i would not advocate beis din beating her.

    1) beis din does not do it out of love.

    2) the marriage is over.

    3) you can reason with your wife, with children you cannot.

you are NOT teaching him to solve problems with your hands you are teaching him not to do X. if the lesson he is getting is to hit when he doesn’t get his way, then once again…YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG!.

and for your information i truly do understand the difference between the wrong way and the right way. i say my grandfather used to hit me and that i don’t resent him for it, in fact a applaud him for it. my mother lived there too and hit me. for the wrong reasons and in the wrong manner. i resent her greatly. so trust me when i say i know the difference.

your arguments are childish because you keep trotting out the “husbands beating wives” or “beis din hitting wives” argument which is patently ridiculous.

but while on the subject…you do realize that beis din hits people to force them to change? obviously when beis din beats you it is radically different from when a parent hits a child…but you do realize that that is why beis din hits right? because sometimes it is the only option. obviously beis din isnt hitting purely out of love…lol i am not advocating malkos for kids 😀

but a parent IS hitting purely out of love. if theyre doing it right.

“however i would wager that if oomis gave you an example you would tell her she was wrong and proceed to suggest another method that may or may not have worked.”

that MAY OR MAY NOT have worked. may…or…may…not. in other words in most cases i would wager 90% IF DONE CORRECTLY (note…IF DONE CORRECTLY) hitting WILL work. (note once again…IF DONE CORRECTLY). other methods…will probably not. i have seen parents try and convince their children not to do X only to have them do X many times over again. and again, i have seen parents who when their child did X hit them (once again…i will keep saying this…DONE CORRECTLY) and the child never did X again.

those studies you trotted out…i GUARANTEE you that if you asked the parents to be honest with you they will tell you that they did not feel love when they hit their kids. THEY! WERE! DOING! IT! WRONG! so please stop trotting out your ridiculous studies.

how do you know to trust yourself? you’re right. you don’t. however look at it this way. if you see yourself as a good person, then if you ever fly off the handle and hit your kid you will feel the same or more pain than the child does. THAT will be your punishment, and it would hopefully change you. again, like i said earlier even if you don’t end up ever hitting your kid, you should work on yourself if you’re scared of doing it.
