I’m with those who say that learning secular studies is important. Why should it be that Jewish boys are illiterate? In the word that we live in, we are interacting with other ppl and we have to be knowledgable. Furthermore, no one knows the future and s/o that planned on learning might have go to work-and how do you expect them to find a job if they can’t speak English correct (yes, im serious!)or do math…It really bothers me that some boys have no respect for secular studies. Im not saying it should be their main focus. Even if they learn it twice a week thats fine.

Why so cynical? Thats why this is the coffee room-you can write anything of interest here. Not everything posted here has to be “changing your outlook” in life or whatever else you mentioned. Maybe it does not interest you but to someone else it does.

I completely disagree with showing a picture! How many times did you hear from happily married couples that they would say that thay always wanted a size whatever girl or this and this color hair and eyes and they ended up getting the exact opposite! Once they met they were able to see through the external and marry them for their inner qualities. But if they would have rejected going out because of a picture…..

I definitely agree that texting has its pros and cons-like everything in life. It has to be done in moderation. My suggestion to any one that is “addicted” to it is NOT to take it away completely-thats way too too extreme and not necessary. Have on your plan a limited amount of text mesaging per month (say 100/200 or so)instead of unlimited, and if they go over they will have to pay it. Hopefully it will work.

mssekeer-come on. Its true i do see many wigs that are not tzniyus, but i really don’t see anything wrong with this one. It looks a little longer than shoulder length and its not “blowing in the wind” as you say. The bottoms are a little puffy-because its not straight, but i wouldn’t call it “flouncy”. Pick and choose your arguments-this is not the bad ones. Halevai e/o should wear this than the ones that are really long and flouncy!

Just look around. There are so many devoted young men and women who spend their summer in a special needs camp-its so beautiful to hear how the campers are having a wonderful time-even though they are going through rough times. The staff are very caring individuals who really make a diffeerence. Keep it up!

apushtayid-I did not say that a tie is not respectable-I said you just can’t compare it with a jacket-because its larger so it makes a greater statement. But definitely a tie does give a respectable appearance-just not as much as a jacket.

Wolf -i disagree, but putting that aside if you say a shirt with a tie says “smart”, why bother wearing a jacket at all on shabbos? Shouldn’t a tie be good enough?

Its too late to edit my post so ill just add on to be clear- A tie definitley adds to an image but you can’t compare it the same way as what a jacket does-being as its much larger and is definitely more stark and noticable. Thats all.

“But let’s carry it a bit further. No lawyer would appear without a tie either. Yet I see no one saying that one must wear a tie to davening.”

im just trying to say that you can’t compare a jacket to a tie. s/o that wears a jacket looks more put together than just w/ a shirt and tie-I believe.

I think you are missing the point. A jacket is an entire appearance, whereas a tie is a minor thing-it doesn’t add/detract from looking respectable as much as a jacket.

I like this thread (Dr. Pepper thanks for restarting this)

I used to take the city bus to my elementary school every morning, and naturally when an older person got on, i stood and offered my seat. One morning an older guy got on, I was the only one that stood and gave him my seat. The next stop another old guy got on and another Bais yaakov girl stood up and moved to the back. The rest of the bus didn’t even offer. But by the next stop 3 older ppl got on and i guess after seeeing us show respect for them, the ENTIRE front of the bus stood up (all goyim)!!! It was very funny to see because the ppl that got on looked bewildered as there were so many seats to choose from! I don’t know if they got up because of me and that other girl but i still think that we caused a kidush Hashem.

I don’t think halachically its wrong when it comes to bathing suits-I think its more of not being in the “spirit of the law” to wear a tank top. You are with other ppl there should be a certain sense of shame to be dressed in something so skimpy.

Wellinformed-this is completely off topic but this reminds me of what you werote.

When a panel of doctors was asked

to vote on adding a new wing to

their hospital, the Allergists voted to

    scratch it and the Dermatologists

    advised no rash moves.

    The Gastroenterologists had a gut

feeling about it, but the Neurologists

thought the administration had a lot

    of nerve; the Obstetricians stated

that they were all laboring under a

    mis-conception.

    The Ophthalmologists considered

    The Psychiatrists thought the whole

    idea was madness; the Surgeons

decided to wash their hands of the

    whole thing, and the Radiologists

    could see right through it!

The Internists thought it was a bitter

pill to swallow. The Plastic Surgeons

The Podiatrists thought it was a step

    The Anesthesiologists

Wolf-you are correct we really should do it like we are going to a king, but i switched my example to going to court because that is s/t more on our level that we can understand and do. In the olden days im sure rabbonim dressed as if they were meeting with a king to daven but i don’t think we can achieve that today.

“I know I’m an idiot who can’t put two sentences together cogently to save his life,”-and why do you say this? I actually enjoy your posts and think that you have a pretty logical way of thinking (e/t I might not necessarily agree with you)

I don’t understand why ppl wouldn’t wear a jacket by davening. Would you go in front of a king w/o it? Or maybe on todays level-would you walk into a court to fight a speeding ticket without it on? Its just more put together and dignified looking. Period.
